Firefighters made progress as the winds died down for a while. The biggest fire is the one burning in ventura county. Its forced tens of thousands of people from their homes. It shut down a major freeway on the western side of the county. Whats the latest . Reporter good morning to you. We can tell you this is a Small Community and its next to highway 101 that is actually closed at this point. You can take a look this way. This is highway 101 right here, completely empty this morning. This is a rare site here in ventura county. Coming in from santa barbra this morning this was closed and its empty because of the closure. This was burning up on the hillside. It jumped highway 101 and traffic was moving. Overnight it grew bigger in size prompting that highway shut down this morning and the firefight continues up in those hills. We spoke with a firefighter just within the last ten minutes as fire crews were working to put out the fire on an abandoned house. Were expecting a big wind event this morning and this afternoon and this fire is expected to push in to the santa barbra county line and the carpenter ria area. It will go into the town of ohio. And these are large images of the fire and this is low on the hillside compared to where we are. This extends very high up on to the hillside there. This is the area where the community of ohio is on the back end of that ridge. That area was evacuated. This Little Community of la cochita mandatory evacuations. If they pick up they could push up against the santa barbra county line. It could reach over to the city of santa barbra. We are expecting an update from fire crews, and a couple of hours this morning. At this point they have it at 9,000 acres burned, 150 structures destroyed, but that number is sure to go up in the daylight hours. And christina we notice youre wearing your mask. I can imagine the air quality, the conditions, the smoke and the hair must be pretty bad . It is bad. This morning, leaving santa barbra, our car was covered in ash, as we made our way closer to this area in west ventura county, its raining ash where we are. You may not see it, you can smell the smoke and haze, and if you get close to the light you can see the ash in front of your face. Its low, poor air quality and thats why were keeping this thing on. Lets check in with steve. I know hes keeping an eye on our weather and the weather in Southern California. Weve talked about this purple warning, something theyve never issued. We dont have that on our graphic. Theres no scale for that. The wind is going to pick up today, it died down yesterday. Theres, believe it or not, you cant see it if youre on the freezing rain red satellite. Watch ow this system dies right there, the water vapor, thats dry air coming in behind that. That system slides back, thats what will pick up the wind. To the north of that is a strong area of High Pressure. That he is all it takes, that system right there, that swept through, you got another look at it right there. Thats why the wind will pick up today, a tiny system, you would never see it on the infrared satellite. I love the water vapor, its good minute details. Today will be worse than yesterday. Its gusting to 80s in the Higher Elevations, were seeing some about 70, its humidity 10, 20 , theres nothing good here, northeast, north, 44 Miles Per Hour, 63 degrees malibu hills and theres a little capacity and a little outlier there. And we have President Trump and roy moore, he could win next weeks special election after numerous allegations of Sexual Harassment and result, it would put Senate Republicans in a bind, it would become the subject of a Senate Ethics investigation and potent democrats and that race in alabama is tight. The days are short, sunny for all, mild, starting off in 30s, 40s 50s and the second of december, there was hardly any rain. The next hint would be thursday, december 21st and it would make sense, it would if the system came through. What we want, is a system to come through and not have the ridge build back in. Theyve made progress as the winds have died down for a little while. Thats the story here, the wind is driving these flames. Theyve had sustained winds in the 65 Miles Per Hour range, theyre anticipating those winds will get up to 80 Miles Per Hour, as much as 80 Miles Per Hour once the sun comes up. Forecast for today, they will have more heat, more wind and that will feed the fires and forcing wildfires firefighters to go completely defensive. Fire Officials Say it could be late next week before they have a lot of these fires contained. Were monitoring what is going on with those fires, were waiting for updates from cal fire and fire officials to get the latest on how things are progressing down this. Allison barber, live there in ventura county. Steve is following the weather. I checked ucla website, the air quality is bad. The campus is not evacuated but the air quality is bad. The winds were not as bad at this fire, theyre worse today. So the thomas fire is the main one, thats the one in the valley that they think is surrounded, thats the one theyre concerned about it. Some areas that were in danger arent in danger and it could change today. Thats correct. Well show you why, theres what week short wave, High Pressure doesnt like low pressure. That little system goes through and dry air comes in there. Theres High Pressure to the north and lower pressure to the south and its all offshore. Theres a good offshore breeze coming out of the Oakland Berkeley hills by the coast. Temperatures could approach upper 60s to near 70, no hope for rain, high clouds, thats it. 60s on the temperatures. 5 37. No rain until the 21st. All right. We can see that far i suppose. We can see that far. Thank you, steve. I appreciate that. Were keeping an eye on the roadways this morning, were tracking a problem for you in livermore that could impact your commute.
