Valley. The camera is moving around quite a bit. Take our word for it. In the area on the 405 in san fernando valley, you can see how traffic is. These are aerial shots, live. The smokes, the flames, if you know the area near the getty center, right in the heart of the san fernando valley, extremely densely populated sherman oaks, brentwood, mullholland drive, it is in the area of the wildfire that is spreading. I was talking i dont know if you can see. They have a Fire Fighting helicopter up. That is good to see. They need that. And Steve Paulson has been talking about the air quality, the winds in the area as well. It is a very, very fluid situation down there in los angeles. And certainly with this situation, steve can chime in here, winds are the story. Very, very low humidity is a factor. 8 for some. 8 by the getty. The winds are not as bad but im seeing 54 Miles Per Hour east of ventura. Really . It is not as bad for some. But there will still be off and on wind gusts around 50 in the higher elevations. This is sepulveda pass at 5 30 this morning. That is unbelievable. That is a separate fire from the thomas and the creek and rye fire. There is a 20 to 25 degree spread on the temps here. 30 in santa rosa. 53 one observation in San Francisco. 51 in half moon bay. Palo alto at 35. So its an easterly breeze. That means there is 32 for woodside. 55 for monster a. Moss beach at 54. The coast, upper 60s possible for santa cruz today. This is what is called a blocking pattern. The west coast, get use today get used to it. It will be here for a few days. We will have lots of sunshine today. Temperatures will be nice. Very warm on the coast. And then we will drop off again tonight and be cold. Temperatures to the north, 60. On the coast, in i had to upper mid to upper 60s. 7 03. How is the traffic . Not that i ignore you, but i havent been paying attention. It has been slow. If youre trying to get to the airport in San Francisco, i would not recommend using highway 101. There have been a couple crashes on southbound 101 right after the old candlestick exit here. I would advise you to use 280 instead. Use 280 down the peninsula and connect with 380 to go this way because of all of the slow traffic. Right now southbound 101 is a mess heading down to san bruno. Here is a look at the san mateo bridge. Looking okay. It is a little bit slower than eastbound of course. And as we look at the bay bridge toll plaza, you can see traffic is okay. It looks like caltrans is pushing a stalled vehicle right here out of the way, which may cause just a little bit of slow traffic. For the most part, were okay at toll plaza. This is highway 4. We have a report of a crash. Westbound highway 4 at loverage road. That may set you back to pittsburgh. Thank you, sal. There are four serious wildfires in Southern California burning as we speak. The newest fire is near the getty museum in l. A. Were talking about near the getty center and ucla. There are two other fires, the creek and the rye fires in los angeles county, along with the thomas fire in Ventura County. Crews are battling that new brush fire that broke out just before 5 00 this morning right across the freeway from the getty center. Northbound 405 in the area is shut down. This fire started at six acres and has grown quickly to 50 acres burned. The fire is moving uphill on the east side of the freeway. Crews are setting up on the southbound side of 405 to prevent the foothill ares irfrom jumping that freeway. The thomas fire is the biggest of the wildfires. It burned 101 square miles in Ventura County. It is likely that hundreds of homes have already burned but they wont be able to keep it from doing much more. The fire burned into the city of ventura yesterday. 38,000 people are now evacuated. The winds are pushing the flames west towards even more neighborhoods. Fire Officials Say they havent heard about any deaths or serious injuries. But they say the thomas fire could keep burning for several days. About 50 miles away, back in los angeles county, the creek fire is threatening hundreds of homes there. It has already burned 17 square miles. We know it destroyed at least 30 homes in the northern san fernando valley. Two firefighters have been hurt battling the flames. More than 100,000 people have been ordered to evacuate. 12 miles north of the creek fire is the rye fire. It is threatening hundreds of home. That fire in the city of Santa Clarita is 5 contained but already burned 5,000 acres. At one point it shut down interstate 5 near the Magic Mountain amusement park. We havent heard of any serious injuries from that fire there. Many of the 50,000 people who have been force today evacuate in Ventura County, they moved into Evacuation Centers in that area. Ktvus Cristina Rendon is at the fairground. It is serving as a shelter and a command post where a fire briefing should be getting underway . Reporter yes. That is exactly right. The meeting is just about to get started. Before we show you that, take a look off into the distance. You can see this haze there against the palm trees, against the flag pole. This is really as the sun is coming up, you can see just how thick the smoke is here in Ventura County. We were driving in from Santa Barbara. We saw the fire cross highway 101 from Santa Barbara as we drove into Ventura County. It is thick smoke out here. The air quality is very poor as expected because this is one of the largest fires here in Southern California. We will pan out over this way. You can see this is the meeting where all of the firefighters from across the state are. Theyre getting their safety briefing this morning. Were not allowed to go into that meeting. But this is where firefighters are getting their orders for the day. Tons of fire crews from the bay area are in there as well trying to get their orders on where to go today to fight the thomas fire. It was an hour ago that we shot video of the crews starting their day, coming in and out with their gear, getting something to eat. Theyre well rested from yesterday. And they are now getting ready to go out on to the front lines. And realso understand that overnight, this fire has grown from 55,000 acres to 65,000 acres. The evacuations are still the same, around 35,000 people in Ventura County. When we spoke with cal fire half an hour ago, he said this is similar to what we saw in the north bay fires. The fires hopscotching to different neighborhoods as well as crossing the highway there, highway 101. As you have been reporting, as we have been reporting, this fire started early Tuesday Morning or late monday night. It went from santa paula all the way to ventura and it has reached the coast. That is about a 30mile distance it has traveled. The crews are worried about a Small Community called ojah where there are homes in that valley. That is where they will focus their efforts today. Briefings getting underway with fire crews across the state. We hope to get updated information on how they will attack this. We know that right now, it is daybreak. So that means the air attack is about to begin. Yesterday, they did fly above but they had to ground those planes and choppers because the winds were too strong. Thankfully overnight the winds were not as bad as the night before. Gasia. Christina, have you had a chance to talk to anybody who has come to where you are that is using it as a shelter. Reporter we spoke to one woman rushing off to the bathroom. The Evacuation Center is on the other side of the fairgrounds here. She is from ventura and came here last night. It is just a place to sleep really. Thankfully her home was not affected. You have to feel for everyone here. There is nothing like sleeping in your own bed. When you have to spend the night on a cot, not knowing what youre going to return home to, that is very nerve racking and scary. We hope to talk to the folks in the next half hour. Very good. We will bring you in. Thank you. The time is 7 10. It shouldnt be a surprise to you but this has been an unusually bad year for california wildfires. The state department of forestry says wildfires have burned more than one million acres in the state. Area the size of all of sonoma county, just consider that. That includes all of the fires from the beginning of the year through last sunday. So thats not even counting the Southern California wildfires were getting right now. There was also one neighboring Apartment Unit that was slightly damaged by the fire. But everyone living in this Apartment Building did have to evacuate last night. And we talked to one woman who told us her car was destroyed. I have good insurance. Im overinsured. Ill be able to replace it. But its a 2006gto so they dont make them anymore. It was in prime condition. So but it was well insured. Reporter those who evacuated their apartments last night were allowed back into their units about an hour or so after this fire started. When it was at its peak, firefighters and of course a lot of people who live in the complex had concern about the fire spreading to the Apartment Building itself. Thankfully fire crews on the ground were able to prevent that from happening. Investigators with the Santa Clara County Fire Department are looking into the cause of this fire, gasia, and they tell us that they are investigating the possibility that this may have been arson. Back to the desk. We have been bringing you photos of the Southern California fire. The newest fire broke oust just this morning. It is right around areas and streets that you might know. The getty center, mullholland drive. You see firefighters actively working to save a home. They are on the structure. You see thick brack smoke billowing. As we learned from the north bay fire, firefighters certainly work to protect each home. We saw unfortunate incidents where the home next door is considered a loss so theyre working to save the one next to it. Theyre working to save what they can. What is most important is human life, animal life and then property. So its its a dangerous situation for the firefighters. Sure it is. A very tense situation, dave, for all of the people who live in the area of the fire. We are talking about mandatory evacuations. Lapd assist withing that. We have seen people with garden hoses trying to fight the flames. Several bay area Fire Departments are sending firefighters down to Southern California to help out. Now, this we have seen the firefighters up close in southern in a little earlier this morning as we panned around. But several firefighters from san mateo county, they assembled yesterday, heading south. Some have been deployed to help out with floods and hurricanes in the past year. They have been very busy. They will be active down there in Southern California, in the los angeles area. Here is a shot of them. Gathered, getting ready to head on out. A lot of work is ahead for them. But i know the firefighters in Southern California appreciate them coming down to help out and battle those flames. So many firefighters in Southern California now just busy fighting the north bay wildfires. We will swing back to what is happening in the north bay with the fbi coming in, saying it needs to investigate fraudulent claims and potential scammers. It has been two months now since the deadly and destructive north bay fires. Leigh martinez is in santa rose a the devastated Fountain Grove neighborhood. Tell us about this fbi task force. They are targeting people who have been scamming fire victims. Reporter well, the fbi San Francisco offices, it has seen this before with other disaster. As soon as a disaster hits, people file false claims for fema aid or conducting these scams. So the fbi is warning fire victim thats if they receive any emails or any type of other correspondence about potential job offers or potential howsing that they didnt apply for, that they should be report thanksgiving and just be weary of anyone reaching out to them or charities popping up that you havent heard of before. The Public Officials have been saying an Alarming Number of claims into fema are duplicates. Numerous fire victims had trouble signing up for aid because someone else had registered with their name and information. Many of these are expected to be fraudulent. The press democrat reports that the fbi and its task force of more than a dozen agency wills look into these duplicate fema claims as well as Fraudulent Charities and advertisements for housing and jobs directed at fire victims. In more positive news from the north bay fire areas, the relief fund will cut a second check this week to fire victim thats lost their homes, jobs or wages during the october wildfires. A large portion of the donations collected came from outside of the north bay. Donations as far away as australia and germany. 100 of those donation thats came in, 100 are going to fire victims. We were checking in with some of the Assistance Centers in downtown santa rosa this morning to check in to see if they had any reports of fraud or any residents coming in saying that they are a little curious about some of the phone calls that they have been receiving. So far one office that handles the debris applications, debris removal and access, they said they only heard a report three weeks ago from one person who was questioning something and didnt have any particulars on that. So we will be reaching out to fema later on today. As for the deadlines, though, we have new deadlines for the fire relief fund. A lot of the deadlines have closed in the north bay, except in two areas. Napa residents can still apply up to friday for the relieves. And Sonoma Valley fire victims have until december 15th to get their applications in to apply for the north Bay Fire Relief Fund. Back to you guys. Thank you, Leigh Martinez in santa rosa. The fire that many of us are focusing on this morning is called the scureball fire. It has burned through 50 aches but that number will grow as we get into the morning here. Here are pictures on the ground. This is a scene that we saw in the north bay over and over again. These are live pictures. Not that long ago. As dave mentioned, live pictures here. Fire crews putting water on the roof of a home clearly burning up there on the second story. As you see them put water on it, watch as the flames and the smoke are whipped around by heavy winds. The winds are not expected to die down any time soon. This area is densely populated with many homes and there is a lot of vegetation. Yeah. A lot of rugged areas as well that is fuel for wildfires. Densely populated along the 405 freeway. People know the sepulveda pass in that area, not far from ucla, the getty center. A lot of buildings a lot of homes, a lot of people. And a lot of fire. This is very concerning. Just a minute ago, we saw a water drop, a helicopter dropping water down. The air attack is crucial. Two factors here. Helicopters cant fly in heavy wind. That has been the case. Secondly, so many of the other wildfires started in the evening or nighttime hours. And so essentially you cant fly in the middle of the night. The fire gets a huge head start on crews working against t a couple of the same factors we saw in the north bay fires. Here at home those started on a sunday night. Some started in the evening, late hours or in the dark hours of the morning. Back to this picture here. You are talking about one by one, houses are being saved. We saw people with garden hoses trying to save their properties. Mandatory evacuations near the getty center, mullholland drive. We were trying to get our equipment out of there. We are stuck because all of the hoses are here. As ive been telling you, this road were on the 1300 block here. It is very small road. Difficult to get in and out. Which is why they have been saying doctor is an evacuation order. Please leave right away. At this point when youre stuck, youre pretty much stuck. Now, we got here probably about 5 15. And things werent that bad. Suddenly as soon as we got all of our equipment, the flames were on both sides. The firefighters were working on one of the houses right over here. And they saved the house. The fire was not o the roof. They were able to save that house. They asked us to please help them get the firefighters attention to come bay to put the flames out on their property. How are you doing, sir . It is a lot of smoke inhalation. Trying to get back in. And it is coming off of the Oakland Berkeley hills. The coast will be sunny and nice. I wouldnt be surprised with the upper 60s because it is so cold. Low 60s there. Pittsburgh, you want to start there or what, sal . Yeah. Were starting in the east bay. Okay. But we do have a lot of slow traffic all over the bay area, steve. Highway 4 seems to well, it seems deceptively light because a lot of people are not getting through at highway 4. Pardon me. I had to cough there. Pardon me. Highway 4 at loveridge, we have an overturned vehicle. Traffic is jammed. Give yourself extra time if youre leaving antioch. Allie rasmus is live to explain what is next and when the strike could end, allie. Reporter a lot of people are hoping that the City Council Meeting later toed will end the strike. 3,000 members of the largest civilian union are on strike. You see them on the picket line. This is clay and 14th street entrance to city hall. But there are workers on the picket lines all around city hall. Union representatives hope this strike will come to an end after today. Whether it does or not will depend on the city council. At 1 00 this afternoon, the city council will meet for a closed session to consider a unions proposal for a oneYear Contract with a 4 raise. A simple majority of Council Members would be able to agree on that. And that would then end the strike. In the meantime City Services like libraries, Parking Enforcement, public works, head start child care programs all shut down for another day. What the union is asking for for now is a 4 raise with a onecart. The city wanted a longer contract. The Union Members say this is not about wages. The city needs to fire more fulltime workers. That they rely too much on part time workers and mandatory overtime. We spoke to a Library Assistant on strike who says that some of her coworkers have had the temporary status for years. To have half of your workforce be temporary part time workers, its a huge drain on our energies and our resources. I think they do it because it is cheaper. There are being legitimate business reasons about why you do sometimes have to have seasonal workers. This is an issue that is very important to both of us. And we are still negotiating on that issue. Reporter the Union Representatives were afraid they wouldnt be aible to continue negotiating the issue if they agreed to the citys last proposal. That is one of the big reasons that they went on strike yesterday. We contact today City Council Member whos say they plan to vote on the oneYear Contract proposal this afternoon. I dont see any rain through the 21st. Even that looks weak. What you look in this kind of a pattern is you look for it to build northward and hopefully something will come underneath. Dont see that yet. Hints of changes after christmas. That is far out. A northerly breeze coming off of the Oakland Berkeley hills. It has been good. Strong, i should say, not good. That heads right over to half moon bay, sfo. There is your easterly or northerly breeze. 32 up in ukiah and sacramento at 35. So it is cold. The days are very short. The nights are long. With High Pressure like this, dont expect anything. In fact, we may not see a cloud for a while, except for a patchy low cloud. Mid60s, in the bay. Upper 60s along the coast. Santa cruz, i wouldnt be surprised with low 60s for inland area thats are the hot spots. Not this time of year. Quia set and boring. Thank you, steve. This just in. Jose ynez Garcia Zarate now faces new immigration and weapons charged. Although acquitted of murder and manslaughter, he was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He will be deported after he serves his sentence. San franciscos District Attorney talked about the verdict in the kate steinle case. He held a News Conference saying he respents the jurys verdict to aquilt jose ynez Garcia Zarate of the most serious charges. He also says that he takes full responsibility for the prosecution of the controversial case. If there was any failure in the preparation and presentation in this case, the responsibility is mine and mine alone. The Homicide Team and my office worked tirelessly on this case. And i hope that their hard work is appreciated, even if they were not able to secure a guilty verdict. Some legal analysts say gastons prosecutors overcharged the case, leading to the acquittal. Jurors found jose ynez Garcia Zarate not guilty, again, of murder or Involuntary Manslaughter charge. Five wildfires are burning out of control in Southern California. The newest fire is near the getty center in los angeles. The rye and the creek are also burning and the thomas fire in Ventura County and one near san bernardino. The skirball fire broke out about 5 00 this morning across the freeway from the getty center. Right now the 405 in the area is shut down in both directions. Crews are trying to prevent the fire from jumping the freeway. We will share video of a firefighter battle the skirball fire. Overcome by heat and smoke, exhaustion. He was given water and rejoined the fire fight a short time later. Lets take a look at the conditions that firefighters are dealing with. In the skirball, humidity is 8 to 10 . I have seen gusts to 30. But the 405 is closed. Both ways. Yeah. Think about that. We also have pretty cold temperatures here. We also have an easterly breeze. Weve had a little bit of rain. They havent had any rain. This is certified super woman. It is cold in the east bay. I see it. Thank you, certified. That is nice for you to say. I know this guy. Were bouncing off some of those. American canyon because of the easterly breeze, theyre in the 40s. Low 30s. Graton still in there. Upper 20s. Berkeley, 50. Lots of 30 interests walnut creek and the 680 corridor. Pleasanton was down to 32. I think things are starting to get above freezing for most locations. Maybe not all but for most. 30s for many and 50s closer to the bay and the coast. Berkeley at 52. The city in the 50s. The easterly breeze, you can see the circulation around the high. No sign of any rain. But there are signs of an easterly breeze. The coast is the place to be if youre looking for anything over 65. Upper 60s for some, especially around santa cruz. 8 31. East bay. Do you want to start there or somewhere else. We see traffic on the east shore freeway. It will be slow driving from the carquinez bridge to the macarthur maze. Once you get on to the bridge, it looks okay. In San Francisco, we havent had any problems there. Northbound 880 traffic near oakland is slowing down as you leave san leandro and get into oakland. Southbound 101 has been slow because of earlier problems on the peninsula near bridgebain and south city. You can kind of tell in this picture just as you go around the corner there, hospital curve, thats where it begins to slow, heading south. Also we can look at the map here. One of the things that i want to remind you, you can use 280. I think 280 might be a little better. But there will be slowing between daly city and san bruno. A lot of people have heard about this. This is a look at the south bay. All of the commutes in the Silicon Valley are slow as usual. But 280 in downtown san jose looks okay. 8 32. Back to the desk. Thank you, sal. Back to our coverage of the wildfires burning out of control in Southern California. Cristina rendon is live on the fire lines of the thomas fire in Ventura County. You have moved. Now you are ten miles south of ojah. Give us the situation there. Reporter gasia and mike, good morning to you. Were here on a hillside, about 10 miles south of ojah. This fire is actively burning behind us. This is a neighbor in the area that brought out a water hose and connected it to a spigot on the fairgrounds where we are and he started hosing down this hillside. You can see the flames really picking up on the ridge right there. The neighbors who live in this area say theyre not under mandatory evacuation orders but the flames are getting very close. It is very concerning to see this smoke and the flames as well. We want to speak with one of the neighbors who lives in this area too. His name is nelson cooper. And he was just driving by when he noticed the flames. Why did you stop . Just because it seems kind of small. And like we could do something about it before it gets on to the trees and jumps over. So hes back there hosing. He hooked up to like the county water supply. He started watering everything down. And this is all on fire, this whole area here. And he put it out and stopped it from getting to the bigger trees. So i think he prevented a lot. In terms of the homes in this area, how many would be affected if this does jump over the highway . I mean, theres no telling. Because i mean we have seen how far it came. I believe this is from santa paula, this one. So i mean it could keep going. It could jump over. There are hundreds of homes back there. So, yeah, he could have potentially saved a lot. And this is really a community effort. You were saying that yesterday everybody was hosing down their roofs. Yeah. Yesterday all of us on the street were just hosing down our roofs. You could see the flames. And we were trying to soak everything, get everything wet. Uhhuh. Because it has been so dry, you know. Yeah. It was scary. Because, you know, you see the flames. Especially at night, it appears to be so much bigger. Reporter okay. Yeah. Reporter we appreciate your time. Ill let you get back to the Fire Fighting efforts there. Stay safe. This is just one of the many areas. So were to give you perspective, were off of highway 33, ten miles south of ojah. The flames are burning on this hillside and on the other side. Thats where the fire jumped 101 overnight there. Is really nothing in that area thankfully. It just burns right out into the ocean. Thats where firefighters will focus their efforts this morning, we understand. Also the fire fight by air. But this you know, thankfully it didnt grow too big. It has already burned 65,000 acres. The winds werent as bad as they were one night ago. The new number is 65,000 acres for the thomas fire in Ventura County. Thank you. Lets go live to Allison Barber who is live in Ventura County. Allison, can you paint the picture for us from your scene right now . Reporter yes. So firefighters, a couple fire trucks are leaving right now. They have been over here trying to fight Little Pockets of fires like this one right here. You see this step up here on fire. We are on a little basketball court. So one thing that the firefighters here said that theyre having trouble with in this neighborhood are Railroad Ties. They say that the oils theyre soaked in makes it incredible difficult to put out the fires. A lot of people in this neighborhood have landscaping that have Railroad Ties. You can see the oil. Once they get lit, it is hard to put out the fire. And then there are metal poles holding them down. The truck is they cant dig them out and flip them over. They keep having the fires pick up. And an ember can come and spread to somewhere else that hasnt been touched in the neighborhood. Let me show you the neighborhood behind us. This is a neighborhood that has been hit hard. You can see the home thats are just flattened. One or two places, mike and gasia, where you will see home thats are flat. There will be one that is okay. More than not in this neighborhood, the more we go back into the into the hills here, the more we see the home thats are just completely damaged. And most people in this area have left. They have evacuated. Again, the firefighters have been here all morning trying to put out a lot of the Little Pockets of fire. The big problem in the neighborhood have been the Railroad Ties because so many homes have landscaping that use them. Allison, it doesnt seem awfully windy where you are. Reporter its not. It is interesting. It comes and goes. This morning, we had a few pockets where maybe for 15 minutes it would be calm and then big gusts of winds would come through. For the last hour or so, its been pretty calm like this, which of course is a good thing for the firefighters here because they need that so that they can get out and do their jobs. One thing they said in ventura yesterday that they want today do, fire officials said once the sun came up, they were hoping to get air tankers up and helicopters. They have half a dozen helicopters they wanted to fly over to contain the fire so it stops doing this, hitting homes in different neighborhoods. With the wind holding off, that helps them potentially be able to do that. It is expected to pick up and it has been a giveandtake all morning where there are moments like this where it feels very calm and it seems like a good sign for firefighters. Then there are moments where it comes through and it comes through strong. Thank you, allison. Several bay area Fire Departments are sending firefighters to Southern California to help out. This is a photo of firefighters from san mateo Fire Department assembled yesterday afternoon as they packed up and got ready to go south. Some of the firefighters have also been deployed to help out with floods and hurricanes over the last year.
