Two firefighters were hurt battling the creek fire in northern san fernando valley. Tens of thousands of people have been forced to evacuate. It is likely hundreds of homes have already burned. There is no containment at all on two of those fires. It is only five percent containment from the fire near the Magic Mountain amusement park. New information about that new fire in Southern California. Crews are battling, look at this, right next to the road. This is a brush fire that started just before 5 am. Look at the road. That is the 405. The 405 freeway shut down in the northern direction. This is the hill near the Geddes Center. Sapulpa can you, if you are familiar with the area heading out towards santa monica is the beach area in that section. It is quickly growing in that area. We are looking at live pictures of a firefighters as there working you can see the embers. That is one of the reasons why this new fire started. Im sure the santa ana winds are bad. The embers are flying. This is moving up hill on the east side of the 405 pick again, the northbound lanes were closed at Bel Air Crest road. Crews were setting up on the southbound side to try to prevent the fire from jumping the 405. The getty center, mulholland drive, all near there. Ucla, brentwood, if you know anything about the san fernando valley, this is major. Right alongside the 405, which is already these are live pictures. This is a separate fire. This is the screwball. I think it is separate from the thomas and the right creek. It is a new fire that started this morning. The wind is about 20 30 miles an hour. Humidity is eight percent. Bone dry. There is so much fuel out there. These are live pictures of the fire fighting. We know a number of cruise from Northern California are headed down there because Southern California crews came up here just a short time ago to help us with the northbay fires. Again, the 10 freeway connector to the northbound for a five is also closed. This is incredible. This is what we saw up here. It was so amazing to hear that the 101 was closed. It was jumped by a fire in santa rosa. Now we are seeing the 10, the 405. Christina is down there and we will check with her in a moment. She said they drove right through the area between ventura and Santa Barbara and the fire was burning on both sides of the 101. I also think the cruise from santa rosa are on their way. The same ones that fought the fire there are on the way. There are even cruise from colorado being disputes dispatched to Southern California. The biggest of three fires started, santa paula, we were talking about this in Ventura County. The wind quickly push it toward the city of ventura. It has burned 78 square miles. Allison ellison barber is at the fire scene. We are still focusing on the wind being a problem for firefighters. Reporter they said they wanted to get some their support up once the sun came up this morning. Use some air tankers and helicopters. They have about air eight air tankers. They were going to get about half a dozen helicopters. The question is will the wind cooperate . Typically they cant get those up in the air if the wind is over 30 miles an hour. There have been some predictions that the santa ana winds could get up to seven miles an hour 70 miles an hour. Let me show some of the damage in this neighborhood. This is where one of the biggest fires in the air has been. This is known as the thomas fire. It has burned at least 50,000 acres and left homes flattened. We can turn around and you might see some camera shots. On the hill behind us there are homes that have been, there is nothing there. There is only one or two homes here on the corner that are still standing. You can see where the fire has jumped and taken out this entire culdesac back here. Again, the main priority today was trying to get one of the big priorities was try to get some air support so they can fight the fire along the edges and keep it out of neighborhoods and try to stop more of this from happening. The official number of structures damaged from fire officials was about 150. They say it is probably more in the thousands, they just havent been able to get a good count so far. Live in Ventura County. Also this morning our own crews are down there as well. Christina is getting an update from cal fire. They were supposed to give us an update just moments ago. Lets check in with christina. You are at the county fairgrounds in ventura. We understand the fire moved towards the city of ventura, but now there is an Evacuation Center there . Reporter yes. There is an Evacuation Center here. There is also a command post area with a bunch of firefighters were getting ready for the day. They will get their orders around 7 00 this morning. In just about half an hour they will get out to fight the thomas fire. Phil murphy is with cal is with cal fire. Talk about the crews that have, and what is the latest on this fire in terms of your fight against it . Crews are coming in from all over california. Through the mutual aid system. A couple of months ago, in october, it was the northbay and now the same crews that were fighting those fires are down here in Southern California. It is the master mutual aid system that makes that happen. Reporter how were the conditions overnight . Has a fire grown . The fire has grown overnight. Last night we were about 55,000 acres and this morning about 65,000 acres. Reporter is that about 100 square miles . I cant do the math that fast. Reporter can you talk about in terms of having so many crews here, is it possible you may get called la county because of the other fires there . We understand 81 broke off near the 405. We are constantly re prioritizing the fires. Again, we have resources coming in from all over the state to help with fires in Southern California. Reporter what you know about that new fire off the 405 . Not a whole lot. It is in another county, it is in the la county area. There is a fire there along the 405 near the getty museum. Reporter can you talk, coming back to Ventura County and the thomas fire, any similarities to the northbay fires that was on october in terms of the pattern, weather conditions . The weather conditions are very similar. The primary difference would be it is cooler. We are in december. The wind conditions that created the fire conditions up there are the same type of wind event occurring down here. Reporter what can you say about the 7 00 meeting . What you expect to come out of that . A lot of crews have come in yesterday. This will be their first time going out on the line. They will get their operational briefing and getting the lay of the land. They will know what to expect when they get on the fire line. Reporter can you give us an overview of how you would classify this fire season . It was already one of the worst in the state. Talk to us about your perspective on it. I think what we had not seen in quite a while is a north northeast type wind event in Southern California. We had several in Northern California over the last few years. This is the first time in many years we have had this intense of a wind event in Southern California. Reporter phil murphy, we appreciate your time. We hope to get an update from you later on this morning. I want to mention that Santa Clara County is not the only bay area crew out here. We have seen crews from san jose, fremont, albany, oakland, allegheny county, Santa Clara County, even San Francisco sending crews as well. Menlo park just to name a few. A lot of bay area crews out here on this fire fight. When the meeting starts at 7 00 we hope to get an update. When is a is over we will bring the latest conditions. Here in Ventura County the thomas fire has grown overnight, now 65,000 acres with thousands of people forced from their homes. Christina is at the fairgrounds, an evacuation and command center. She will get us an update. Alice as i was heading home yesterday i saw a brigade of firetrucks heading down south. We know a number of local teams are down there. We want to take you to some live pictures we are getting in right now. These are live pictures in the san fernando valley. Firefighters battling flames near the 405 freeway in the san fernando valley. The getty museum, the screwball center, this is right in the heart of densely populated los angeles. Coming down a hill and out of control. I used to live right near here so i cant even believe what is happening and what we are seeing. These may be firefighters, but they may well be it almost looks like homeowners yeah, regular people trying to protect their homes with fire hoses. This is major. Mulholland drive, flames have been have been reported. Steve, you have been hearing about what is happening. I think you have covered it. Based on what i have seen there has been nothing really new except what you just mentioned around the getty. A lot of us know that traffic, rushhour, always densely populated in los angeles. Always in that area. On top of the flames being right alongside the 405. It is truly dangerous. That commute starts early and people in the bay area live further away from where they work, from downtown los angeles. A number of cars we have seen on the for five that basically had to be turned around to get off the freeway. Then you know it is sunset boulevard, sapulpa, ucla, the 10, a very crowded area. Im sure it is creating a lot of , hopefully not chaos, but im sure it is causing a lot of congestion down there. We do know the smoke is very bad. The santa ana wind this time of year makes the situation worse. It sounds like there are now four fires. Ventura county that crossed the 101 between ventura and Santa Barbara county, one north of Magic Mountain, this fire that is by the getty burning down to the ocean. This has been amazing. As we watch the live pictures this is a new fire. This was the one that started early this morning. This is right near the getty center. You can talk about the wind down there. The firefighter made a very good point, it is december so the temperatures are not 90 or 100. The wind is still pretty strong. We saw the embers in this shot we were just showing it looks like the problem is la has had no rain. We have had a little bit, but they have had no rain. It is bone dry down there. We will get to the weather. Clear and cold for most. This is another scene, the southbound is open on the 405, northbound is not. East southeast la north, northeast at riverside, calm santa monica. I still see 54 miles an hour in some of the canyons to the east of ventura. The fire weather warning will go the duration. The length is the key is how dried is. 30s, 40s, and 50s. Even a few 20s. 52 berkeley. Concorde 35. 32 san juan san ramon. Big differences in the temperatures are all wind driven. We have an offshore breeze with a High Pressure that seems content to stick around a while. Offshore Half Moon Bay with gusts at 22. Officers upper 60s were not surprised me by the coast today. Around santa cruz there is no hint of rain. 60s on the temperatures. Am i going to sell . Am i done . I do not. Im going to sell. Yes or. Were looking at the commute in the bay area. It has nearly none of the trouble the south land commute has. Were looking at the bay bridge toll plaza. That is backed up for about 25 minute delay. The eastshore freeway is also another 25 minutes wrapping to the main. It is busy. Definitely slow traffic on 880 n. In some spots driving up into downtown oakland. Southbound 880 is much slower. So is the 238. Continuing to slow down to fremont. We have slow traffic appearing on 85, 280, and 101. Not as slow as it will be but it is slowing down. Lets go back to the desk. A former 49ers quarterback got another honor. Coming up, the surprise guest known all over the world who presented Colin Kaepernick with his latest award. The same strong wind that made three Southern California wildfires so destructive are also making the fire fight itself even harder. We have more from where the fire jumped the freeway. Reporter about 8 00 last night, we are right next to the 101 freeway. The big story in our region right now is the getty center about 16 miles away. The fire is spreading, 25 miles an hour. The wind there north on for a five has closed some of the roadways. Flames still going on after hours and hours. Last night the fire did jump this freeway, flames were dangerously close to home homes. The 101 freeway is still open. It has been the entire time. We have seen bagels on it all night. Imagine how terrifying seeing flames on both sides of you as you drive through a freeway. One reason fire jumping was so significant is lets look out live, if we can pan to this direction you can finally see the ocean to my right. That was are seen, having the fire on one side and the Pacific Ocean right next to us. There are many Beachfront Homes in this area. People were extremely worried that the fire was going to rage goes to their homes. Luckily, that did not happen. This is not the only fire. The thomas fire is about 55,000 acres. Well, there are now three other major fires in la including the one of the getter at the getty center, the rye fire which briefly shut down the five freeway yesterday in Santa Clarita. There is also the creek fire, nearly 12,000 acres. A really bizarre set of events here in the Southern California region. We will send it back to you in the studio. We appreciate it. Were looking at live pictures now back in the area around the 405. We have been focusing on that in the san fernando valley. If we can get those pictures back we will talk more about what we see. Again, this is just incredible. I used to live right near here. Im used to seeing all the traffic and everything, but the flames and the flames actually reaching onto the freeway, this looks like what bridge is this . This goes across, this is around mulholland drive. This is it looks like a staging area on the side. Back look at the fire trucks. Fire trucks all along the side of that and then Police Vehicles moving to the center. They have completely closed that overpass and are using it as a staging center. This is near the Gettys Center. This is the overpass that goes across the 405 which is underneath there. I would imagine that will be the best ways for them to stage the firefighters. There is a lot of activity. Basically, we have been telling people to stay away from the 45. It sounds like they are staging right there over the for a five because the fire is burning on both sides at this point. Thats great there is the round building right there, that is sapulpa and the Gettys Center, the luxe hotel, gosh, i just stayed with my daughter for spring break.
