It happened in unincorporated Alameda County near livermore. She was partially thrown from a car and killed after the driver lost control. A second victim had life threatening injuries. During the long Holiday Weekend the chp is on the lookout specifically for drunk drivers on maximum enforcements. Ktvus south bay reporter jesse gary has more. Reporter frank, good evening to you. Chp investigators say the danger of dui actually becomes elevated actually started yesterday. A lot of people out partying and drinking before thanksgiving. Today folks went out for thanksgiving. A lot of times alcohol with that. Now its evening and those same people are headed home. So on freeways like the 880 behind me, chp officers will be out and on patrol. Reporter it started wednesday and continues through sunday. Chp officers swarming bay area roads. Officer david torres patrols four miles of the south bay from the 880 freeway as it merges into highway 17. While all traffic violations will garner his attention, he is especially focused on finding intoxicated drivers. Is there a typical time where you see more of it or anytime of day . Duis, at all times of the day. But usually later in the evening after people have dinner, going to parties or going out. Reporter statistics from the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration show the time before thanksgiving through the end of the holiday is a problem. 40 of passengers killed in vehicle accidents die in dui related crashes. There will be a lot of usage of the highways and the roadways as well, and because of that, we want to make sure that everybody does get to their destinations safely. Reporter shortly after midnight an unidentified 16 yearold girl died in a dui crash. The kia in unincorporated Alameda County near livermore. Left the roadway overturned and one party was ejected we know of right now and another party was partially ejected. That partially ejected person was pronounced dead at the scene. Reporter the second victim fighting for his life at the medical center. Officers hope their presence will reduce the risk of accidents and deaths. We see all kinds of Different Things on the roadway but definitely if somebody does get injured, during some type of traffic collision during a dui, its [ indiscernible ] reporter chp officers say anytime you are headed out, either to party for the holidays or just party, period, have a designated driver in mind. Hundreds of volunteers helped with the thanksgiving tradition today in San Francisco. Allie rasmus was at glide memorial and gives us a look at all the work involved in preparing thousands of meals and the new leadership behind it all. Reporter its an Assembly Line of sorts with rows of tables, dozens of trays and hundreds of people fixing more than 200 hams and 300 thanksgiving turkeys. It takes more than 500 volunteers on a morning like this to make it happen. Its the feeling of, you know, wellness that you get, the happiness that you accomplished something. I dont know, it lasts all day long. Reporter the more than 3,000 people on the receiving end of those efforts are graceful for grateful. What makes this event different from some of the other Holiday Events is the attention to detail. You can see it there. Dinner is served on real china plates with crystal glasses and silverware. And the tables are draped with decorative cloths and napkins. Four or fivestar experience. Its presented like we love you. This action speaks louder than words. This tells you somebody cares about you. Someone loves you. And this is the message we want to send out. You have not been forgotten. But, like, i wanted to kind of, like, take a break and just focus on family and stuff. But after i started coming and, like, got back into things, it was nice. Football meant everything to me after the fire. Its the only thing we had that was still normal. Reporter not entirely normal. The teams emotional roller coaster has coincided with a logistical one. Practices at random times and multiple locations, sometimes in a gym rather than on a field. And minus many creature comforts. I miss our school like a car with a locker. My car smells bad. I keep my pads in it. Im commuting about an hour and 30 minutes to school, 30 minutes to here, so i mean, its been tough. Reporter sacrifices well worth it for the players and the fans who as is so often the case in times of tragedy, found solace in sports. Friday nights normalcy, hope. It gave them a sense of something bigger than just the football game. Big part of Cardinal Newman is the community. Its a small school of 600 students and its really important were around one another am so it was big to get back on the field and play a game and just get our fans together, having a good time and takes them away from the tragedy for three hours. Reporter but the benefit of football here has evolved from a mechanism for healing a community to one for energizing a community. With every playoff win the excitement grows as does the teams resolve. [ screaming ] newman theyre used to this time of the season playing games. This is probably more special because every week you get together and we need each other right now. At the beginning were playing for ourselves and now were kind of playing for everybody. Reporter and everyone is invested in the possibilities. The cardinals sit two wins away from a second Straight Division title. And if ever a celebration was deserved, it would be this team at this time. We worked hard together, really bonding. Well never forget this year. I think this year has taught me a lot about how close the team could get and it was unique circumstances. Its been nearly a year since the deadly ghost ship warehouse fire in oakland and now were seeing new video of interactions between Oakland Police and the ghost ships Master Tenant derick almena. How many times have we came back here . I dont know, the past week. Body camera footage obtained this week showed Oakland Police had several encounter with almena about problems at the wear. It demonstrates authorities knew people were living there illegally although almena repeatedly tried to hide it. He and fellow tenant max harris who pled not guilty to 36 counts of Involuntary Manslaughter in connection with the fire that killed 36 people. We are learning more tonight about a 9. 5 million settlement that directv will now have to pay to resolve allegations that it illegally dumped Hazardous Waste at multiple locations including in oakland. Investigators say that all 25 directv facilities here in california dumped battery, electronic devices, aerosol cans and other Hazardous Materials in dumpsters and it ended up in local landfills. Directv denies wrongdoing but will dispose of Hazardous Waste properly in the future. A bay area mother living a perfect life and tragedy strikes. One womans battle with stage four lung cancer. The treatment that may save her life and the tough road ahead. I had over 200 nodules, tumors in my lung. And 15 tumors in my brain. Really . Really . Really . Really . Really . Really . Thats why donna terry is telling her story tonight. She is young, healthy and has never been a smoker. [ music ] reporter if life can be captured in pictures, hers was from a storybook. Everything was going perfect. I married a cop. He went back to grad school. He finally got a detective job at a good city. We thought we would buy our forever home, have a boy and a girl and i got sick last year in august. Reporter at first, she thought it was a cold, a cough that just wouldnt go away. Then i got to the point where i was coughing so hard, i actually was breaking ribs. At this point i had broken two ribs coughing. They finally decided to do a bronco oscoposy. When i woke up be, saw the look in my doctors face. And i said, just tell it to me straight. And he said, cancer. Its stage 4. Reporter which means it had spread from her lungs to her lymph nodes and to her brain. I had over 200 nodules, tumors in my lungs and 15 tumors in my brain. Reporter terry was only 39. She doesnt smoke, has never been a smoker. She eats healthy, exercises regularly, and when the symptoms started, she did not wait to go to the doctor. Her doctor says terrys case is a wakeup call and opportunity to educate ourselves on who lung cancer is targeting. A lot of the screening guidelines for lung cancer with scans are for patients with a history of smokinging. 25 of lung cancer worldwide cannot be accounted for by smoking. So thats a pretty big percentage when you think that 1. 6 million cases are diagnosed per year. Thats a lot of people. Thats a lot of patients who never smoked. Lung cancer in never smokers frequently more frequently occur in women than men. And this is particularly true in asia. In fact, for women diagnosed with lung cancer in asia, 60 to 80 have never smoke. The question is why. Thats a very good question. We dont know. Reporter more research is needed. Research has identified three specific types of lung cancer in nonsmokers. Donna terry has roth 1, a mutation of small cell cancer. Knowing what it is, is a game changer when it comes to treatment. We want to test for those because medications that can shut off that signaling to make the tumors stop growing and shrink. Reporter there are still side effects just like with regular chemo. Terry has lost hair. But she can take her treatment at home with a pill. Its not as invasive. And she calls the effects a miracle. Before the treatment, she was on oxygen and couldnt walk around because she was in too much pain. I would say three weeks i was up and running, no oxygen, no shortness of breath. Last week i had my third scan. My lung scan. And they said the doctor said that my lungs now look like a normal, quote, unquote, normal persons. 15 down to 6 tumors in my head. But theyre much smaller, reduced in size, not causing symptoms. Reporter we wish we could tell you that donna terry will get her storybook ending but the treatment is not a cure. She is still stage 4. She still has lung cancer. What we can tell you is that she is determined to fight for herself and for others. She was inspired to tell her story to raise awareness after participating in a sorry. I cant make it. Its just my eczema again, but its fine. Yeah, its fine. You ok . Eczema. Its fine. From washington, dc to hollywood, allegations of Sexual Assault are mounting netflix is now ending its Golden Globe Party partnership with the weinstein company. It comes after the companys cofounder Harvey Weinstein is facing numerous allegations of Sexual Misconduct. He has since stepped down from the companys board of directors. Those two companies though netflix and weinstein have hosted a Golden Globes Party Together for the last 3 years. Theres some mixed reaction coming in after a holiday parenting message from the girl scouts. The National Girl Scouts Organization is warning parents not to make their children hug their relatives. Fox news Lauren Blanchard has our report. Reporter a controversial message to parents from the girl scouts with the blog post entitled, reminder, she doesnt owe anyone a hug, not even at the holidays. I just felt like that was overstepping the bounds of what girl scouts is all about. Not forcing children or anyone for that matter to have physical contact with anyone. Reporter the National Girl scouts of the usa organization warning parents to not force children to give hugs or kisses to relatives if they dont want to. So they dont get the wrong idea about consent and physical affection. Some kids need to be encouraged to show affection because maybe it doesnt come naturally to them. Theyre absolutely right. I hugged my four nieces whom i love very much. Ill ask them first on thursday if they mind. Reporter the warning coming as a growing number of public figures are now facing Sexual Misconduct allegations. As experts note, many child sexual abuse cases involve a family member. I agree with the girl scouts. The problem, though, is that you dont want to make children paranoid and scared. Children need to be touched, touched appropriately, to feel that theyre loved. They need to feel safe. I think its totally appropriate, normal. I have three children, two girls and a boy, and they always hug and kiss their parents, their grandparents, our relatives. But recently the time has gotten earlier and earlier with some Stores Opening on thursday night. The profits are welcome for many retailers. For a lot of retailers on their profit and loss statements they went from red to black. So they went from, you know, negative profits for the year to the positive. Some states have actually banned large supermarkets and Department Stores from opening before black friday including maine and rhode island. Well, again, thousands of people across the country will be joining lines at malls all over. The goal is to snag a black friday bargain. Argentinas navy says a sound detected near the area of its missing submarines last known location is consistent with an explosion. Reporter searchers are still searching for a missing submarine after a loud noise was detected by the United States and other specialist agencies who are conducting an analysis of the data from the waters finding what they call an anomaly produced just hours after final contact with the vessel. We received an official account relating to the morning of wednesday, 15th, which coincides with the area of operations of the last registered position of the submarine. Officials are not losing hope, determined to find the crew as concerns about the limited oxygen supply grow. It is a critical situation and the concern is increasing. Some of his creations are really something. Mark tamayo reports. Reporter this may not be the warm sunny beach day that draws thousands of visitors to the coast. But for this artist its the perfect afternoon and its been on his calendar for weeks. Ian ross is pulling up to a foggy ocean beach to create his next design in the sand. His love for art and surfing collide at the coast where he uses the gloves and a garden rake. [ music ] something unique about this sand here is it is black under the surface and the lighter color washes up on top. This is it. Reporter his starting point is here. Ian walks a steady pace. How do you have it taper off . So you can lift one side. There you go. Not bad. Reporter another canvas for ian this mural in berkeley bursting with yellows and greens. A Realty Company hired him to coat the walls of a building called foundry 31. The motion of the brush moves in a natural flow carrying over to a rake in the sand. The next two hours are filled one planned routes, loops and lines. As the tide recedes the work area expands to cover more ground a stroll turning into a bike ride. [ music ] reporter the mobile rake creates even bigger loops and longer lines. A short lifespan of this creation seems to create a deeper connection. You know, making a living doing anything that you love, you have to sacrifice some of the purity sometimes for the client or for the job. You have to sometimes do what you do to do to make a buck. But this is a way to do something that is just completely no one can own it. Its gone. Its completely ephemoral. Reporter he travels the coast. He may show up alone and leave a big trace. There is a common theme even though they are all unique. A way to raise awareness about environmental problems, showing it to people in a different way. Reporter grab a rake and head to the beach . Its not that easy. Ian studies the tide books for the best day and outgoing tide. The water treats the sand making it the perfect can versus to work on. I dont know if its just one guy doing it. Reporter it is one guy. The guy with the rake, right . Reporter visitors gradually central into the art zone. All are welcome and have a deep appreciation. Thats a nice surprise. Im fortunate to walk from my house to see this awesome art. Reporter another artist is his father. He is not carrying a sketch around with him. He does this acapella and his style shows through every time. I think he did a very good job. He worked all day to do that. Reporter this florida family was happy to run into this surprise while looking for sand dollars. Mom is an architect. While the details impress her, the effect on her kids leaves a big impression. To see her see someone else drawing on the sand, ive seen them draw on the sand before to make such a big display out of it. Yeah, it warms my heart to see them get excited about it. Ian jogs alongside the gift he is leaving behind en route to an ocean that will eventually wash away his design. Maybe it will take people out of that tough time for a moment and thats really where the value lies. Being able to give people a little bit of beauty and serenity in their normal everyday life. A child is driving a silver infiniti with i dont know if its like their mother or somebody almost chasing them down in a red suv. Reporter a 10yearold boy recently led Ohio State Police on a highspeed chase around cleveland popping 100 miles per hour. [ sirens ] block him in here do not let him get by you, block him in reporter it was the second car he had taken in a week. One of my units made contact visually with him and asked him to pull to the side of the road and the juvenile shook his head no. Reporter in mississippi a couple reported their 11year old grandson was kidnapped but he had stolen their car, wrecked and flipped it several times. [ screeching tires ] [sirens ] reporter and this is the youngest underaged perpetrator we found. A 9yearold in indiana who took his parents car after being told play time was over. And that kid was just over 4 feet tall. That would put his head here barely able to see over the dashboard. But still he reached the pedals, put it in gear and drove away doing 80 miles per hour. What is a parent to do . Parents should tell their kids that a car is a tool, not a toy. Its a way to get around. It shouldnt be treated like a playground or their living room. Im frank somerville. Chp investigators are still trying to determine what caused a deadly crash that killed a 16yearold girl this morning. It happened in unincorporated Alameda County near livermore when an suv carrying five people overturned. The 16yearold girl was partially thrown from the suv and killed. Another passenger had life threatening injuries. Officers on the scene said alcohol was found inside the suv. Now, this comes as the chp is out on the roads looking out for potential drunk drivers. Our south bay reporter jesse gary is live in North San Jose with more on the maximum enforcement thats now under way. Reporter good evening. Chp officers tell us that at the risk of dui accidents and deaths that the risk of deaths started escalating last night the day before thanksgiving when a lot of people are out partying.
