Ktvu reporter lee martinez has been on the scene for the last hour where firefighters plan to be there, i guess, much of the day. Lee, what can you tell us . Reporter frank, very sad to record that one of the victims is a teenager, a child. We have arson investigators out here right now trying to determine what caused this deadly fire. Again, two people are dead and two more people are in Critical Condition after being rescued from the fire this morning. Now, fire Officials Say a downstairs neighbor called 911 at 4 57 this morning to report the fire coming from the second floor apartment. Firefighters found the back apartment on south ninth street full of black smoke. They quickly realized that people were still trapped inside. Definitely went into rescue mode. I do know that one company was able to remove one person from the backside of the structure, down the ladder and then the others were taken from the balcony. Reporter unfortunately two of the people rescued have died and they died on scene. We do we have confirmation that one of them is a minor, a teenager, who died. The other two victims were taken to the hospital and are in Critical Condition. Fire crews had the fire contained within 45 minutes and say its only in the upstairs back apartment. An arson investigator is on scene to determine the cause of the fire. Now, we do not know at this time if there were working smoke detectors or not. The fire captain with San Jose Fire Department says they havent been able to determine if the smoke detectors were working but he really wants to drive it home to people to make sure that your smoke detectors are working. Check them, especially this time of year, because people are plugging in heaters, its getting much colder outside and these are types of things that can start these house fires, so check your smoke detectors, smoke detectors save lives, make sure they are working. So true and the price of a battery can save a life. Leigh, was the apartment where the two were killed, is that where the injured folks came from as well . Reporter yes, everyone was in that one apartment that was in the upstairs towards the back. That is also the origin of the fire in that apartment only, we do note theres water damage in the other apartments. We did talk to someone who says he is the Property Owner and he says the other tenants, claudine asked earlier if they had been evacuated, they are out in the street right now. What we know is there is water damage to their apartment but they are going to be doing an investigation here pretty much all day long like you had mentioned earlier, so the fire arson team is out here and they are going to pretty much be blocking this off. We have San Jose Police out here too because of the two fatalities so this is going to be a scene for quite some time today. And leigh, quickly, it sounds like, was that balcony there only their only way of escape . I dont know if the fire was blocking them from getting out in any other way. Reporter its undetermined at this time. What they can only tell me is that the fire was in that apartment but they cant specify where within that apartment. However, they were able to get to the balcony and thats where they did the rescues. So very tragic. Leigh martinez, thank you for the update from the scene. Now, just yesterday it had the whole entire bay area covered and it looked like we could see anywhere from a quarter inch to maybe 1 2 but here we are monday night and it doesnt look like a whole lot. With that said, it could change up once again. It changes every few hours. Now, heres a look at the futurecast model as we get into sunday night and monday, theres that rain moving in, but notice its not really showing much of accumulation. So we will be tracking it between now and then but that will be our next best shot at getting some rain into the bay area. That coming on monday. For today, its a chilly start but for the afternoon mostly sunny skies and temperatures will be in the 60s, afternoon highs look like this, 62 for novato as well as vallejo, 63 in oakland and berkeley, low 60s expected San Francisco, low to mid60s for the inner east bay, mid60s for the south bay. San jose go to 65. 66 expected for santa cruz this afternoon. The extended forecast temperatures dont budge much. As we get into sunday, but we will have, again, an increase in cloud cover by sunday night. Chance for rain moves in on monday. Doesnt really last very long. Go partly cloudy and a warmer day on tuesday and looking pretty good on wednesday for those folks that are going to be traveling on wednesday, dry conditions, temperatures ranging from the upper 60s to low 70s around the bay, so relatively mild and, again, thanksgiving looks pretty good as well. Kind of put you in the spirit of the cold weather. Thanks, rosemary. Youre welcome. Its rivalry game that does not need a flashy name like the red river shootout or the iron bowl, nope. The bay areas biggest rivalry is simply known as big game. And the 120th version kicks off today in palo alto. Ktvus scott reiss has a preview. Reporter 35 years ago the most famous play in College Football history. The ball is still loose. Reporter so legendary, its been memorialized in legos. On the field. Hes going in the end zone. Reporter sadly recent big games havent been quite so compelling. Stanford has dominated the decade. We talk to your guys all the time about having tangible evidence, having a trophy. I know we havent won in a while. Reporter stanford has won seven in a row from california. Seven years. We are not competing against streaks. Im sure hes been reminded how many years in a row they have not won. I would love to bring it back to berkeley. We are all focused on playing this game and coming out with a win. Reporter the 2017 big game buildup, typically spirited from the battle of the bands to the big sale on one campus the chopping rally. On the other, the burial. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. If we get the win, we play in the bowl game, guarantee ourselves postseason game. Reporter stanfords incentive even bigger, win and keep pac 12 title hopes alive. We dont want to be focused on all the different scenarios that can happen. We got to go out and play a good football game. There he goes, Christian Mccaffrey through the line. You can watch the big game right on ktvu fox 2, it happens tonight. Stanford is ranked number 22, 14point home favorite against the bears. Kickoff at 5 00 p. M. I brought you nespresso. Nespresso. What else . Back now at 7 53. Oaklands underground art scene struggling after the ghost ship fire for years it was vibrant. With rents high and spaces at a minimum, musicians and other artists were drawn to spaces off the beaten track. We take a look at why many artists are still struggling to find community. The art scene in oakland is vibrant, eclectic, it makes the city what it is and the night of the ghost ship warehouse fire embodied that feeling, electronic dance music was playing. Vibrant lights flashed through the room. It was a place where artists, musicians and creatives could share and express themselves, an underground community providing a refuge for the fringes. I enjoy a certain style of music which isnt as much mainstream so we tend to look for spaces that accommodate that, which means that sometimes they are a little off the beaten path and maybe not the normal concert venues you could be going to. Chris is an artist whose friend alex died in the fire. Alex was larger than life. Talked to a couple different artists around the bay that were going there for years, right . And that was an important place for people to come to and come as a community. Reporter but ever since the deadly ghost ship tragedy, the underground arts and party scene has not been the same. One of the things, its so challenging about about the aftermath of the fire is its a time when its so important for people to be able to come together and it was it becoming increasingly difficult before the fire and now after the fire has been made almost impossible. Reporter davids brother jonathan was a video artist at the ghost ship that night entertaining guests when his unique visual art creations. Unique quality of his work really came from his ability to pull together kind of these collage fragments. He just blew everybody away. He says those special venues were already in limited supply. And one of the reasons that the event happened there the night that it did was, you know, basically an act of desperation because there were there werent other places to have parties. Burnbalm says the gatherings have dwindled in the last year. Not like they used to be. Reporter some events still held aboveground now at permitted clubs and venues, while other events are held in secret. After the ghost ship fire theres a fear of too much exposure threatening the close knit arts community. These spaces are, you know you know, they are not i dont want to say underground but they are different, they are catering to the different type of crowd and a different type of audience and, yeah, we will keep it that way. Reporter for a group that is already at risk of being priced out of oakland, the citys new focus on cracking down on unpermitted spaces is driving some artists away. Already that hidden universe of underground parties in the bay area was already in peril before the ghost ship fire even happened and very much the fire happened because the ground was shrinking, you know, every other month or so one of the venues where these things would happen would be lost to eviction. Reporter and while artists recognize that where they gather must be save, without them they say oakland will just not be the same. These types of spaces pop up because these are places for artists and creatives to come and Share Community with each other, you know, it creates a void in the community itself. Reporter mike mibach, ktvu fox 2 news. At ktvu. Com we have posted all of our coverage to the ghost ship warehouse fire one year later. We will is have more on this Apartment Fire investigation in san jose. Two people are dead, two critically injured. We will have a live report coming up. Coming up. Good morning to you. Welcome to mornings on 2. It is saturday, november 18. Happy weekend, everyone. Im frank mallicoat. Im claudine wong. First, some of the headlines and some very serious news in the south bay. A deadly fire this morning in san jose. Two people are dead. And several more hurt. After an apartment was engulfed in flames, it started around 5 00 this morning. Kutv lee martinez is there, on the scene all morning and we will check in with her in just a moment for the very latest on what happened. Also, this morning, we are going to talk about this event being held across the city of santa rosa. Organizers put it together to help those who lost everything in the wildfires. They are calling it a nongarage sale. More on how it will work and why it wont cost people a thing that lost everything in the fires. And it has been one of the deadliest fire seasons in our state history. And recovery will take a long time. But peak fire season officially ends on monday across many parts of northern california. But it is not over yet. When we talk about danger. Firefighters do have some safety advice for people, as we are heading into the winter months. We will have more on what we are all being encouraged to do, on chilly days like this one. And it is chilly. But it is sunny and it got a little soggy over the week, so im glad to see the break. It was wet. One, two, three inches of rain fell in urban areas and some hills got more than that, three to five inches. Just in time for the weekend, a break, perfect timing. A view of the golden gate bridge. Behind this wet system, the cold has settled in. And temperatures this morning, bottoming out near freezing for some. Here is another view from up above where we do again have wall to wall sunshine out there, and one little area we are watching, where vincibility could be an issue visibility could be an issue. The fog has developed over portions of the north bay. A dry north northeast breeze out there. That has prevented widespread fog from forming. But take a look right in there, a little bit closer to san rafael, along highway 101, small communities could see a little bit of patchy dense fog this morning. And it has shifted just a little bit. Earlier, near novato and petaluma. The winds are generally light, but still any breeze out there is going to make it feel a whole lot chillier. 43 degrees in concord. And44 in oakland. This is a cold one but better than where we were an hour ago. Temperatures are beginning to rebound some with the sunshining on us. Temperatures are down by several degrees. In the north bay. Down by 14 degrees in novato. San jose, down by 8. And livermore, down by 6. Afternoon highs for today, under mostly sunny skies. 64 in antioch. And 64 for concord. Low 60s oakland. And 64 in san mateo. And low 60s expected in santa rosa, as well as napa. Temperatures will be very similar for tomorrow. Then we have the possibility of some rain coming our way, as we get back to work on monday. I will have a look at that in the extended forecast coming up. Okay, thanks, rosemary. We begin with breaking news in the south bay that we first told you about an hour ago. Two people are dead, including a teenager. In an Apartment Fire that was on e street and south 9th street near the san jose state campus. Two other fire victims had to be rushed to the hospital. Firefighters will likely be at that Apartment Building for much of the day. Ktvu lee martinez is at the scene to try to find out exactly how it all happened. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Yes, they do have the fire investigator out here on the scene as well as San Jose Police. Because we have two fatalities. And as you mentioned, one of those fatal victims was a child, a teenager. We do know that two other victims who were rescued from the fire, they are in Critical Condition at a local hospital. Fire Officials Say a downstairs neighbor had called 911 at 4 57 this morning to report that the fire was coming from the second floor apartment towards the back. Now, firefighters found the back apartment on south 9th street full of heavy black smoke. It turned into a three alarm fire when crews quickly realized people were still trapped inside. They definitely went into rescue mode. I do know that one company was able to remove one person from the backside of the structure, down a ladder, and then the others were taken from the balcony. Now, unfortunately, two of the people rescued died on the scene. The two other victims were taken to the hospital and again, they are in Critical Condition. Fire crews had the fire contained in 45 minutes. They say it is only in the upstairs apartment, that is where the investigation is taking place right now. And arson investigator is on the scene, to determine the cause of the fire. Now, we did talk to a man who says he is the Property Owner of this building, he says that the family of four lived inside that apartment. And says they were longterm tenants of his. So he was pretty broken up when we saw him out here. The cause of the fire is undetermined. That is stressed to us from the fire captain here. However, the fire captain says at this time, they do not know if the apartment had working smoke detectors. And thats one thing that he wants to drive home to our viewers, is that especially this time of the year, check your smoke alarm and make sure they are working, and he says this time of the year, when it gets cold, people start plugging in space heaters. We dont know if that is the case here, but they see a lot more fires this time of the year, because people are trying to stay warm. And it is very important that people have smoke detectors that are working because smoke detectors save lives. A simple thing to do but a lot of people just dont do it. All right. Leigh martinez, thanks so much, reporting live from san jose. This morning, San Francisco police are searching for a driver accused of trying to hit an officer with a car on twin peaks.
