Up my sisters from college and seeing this plane taxiing out there. It had a big head on it. That made me want to be a pilot. That was one of my dreams. I thank the 747 for the dream of wanting to be a pilot. Never did t but it was a huge plane. Back in the late 60s and 70s and, 80sand 90s. They were ripping off, boeing, six of these every month. Before the 747, it was the 707. And then when they introduced the 747, it was such a huge deal. You have been on one. I have been on a 747. It was one of the best i was so excited. Im an airplane geek. They changed aviation because all of a sudden the masses could travel. It was slightly more affordable and more widespread. So air travel became something for everyone, not just those at the very the top 1 , if you will. It did revolutionize air travel. I have never been on one. I have been never to hawaii. You should have been on that flight. I should have snapped up a ticket. They sold out in two hours. I wonder how does this plane fly it is so big. Busy air cast ahead. We have to begin in concord where police are investigating the deadly shooting of a student near the high school. It happened near Olympic Continuation High School. Rob malcolm is in concord outside of the school where police have stepped up patrols this morning. Rob. Ng. Rob. Reporter yeah. Good morning, mike and gasia. There was a heavy Police Presence here at Olympic Continuation High School in concord. And Police Still Searching for answers as to how and why this 17yearold was shot and killed in broad daylight. People have been stopping by this memorial all morning long, just paying their respects to this young teen. But really a heart breaking scene played out this morning as the parents of the explain teen came to this memorial and read messages and also looked at pictures of their son in happier times. Like many here, theyre still trying to find understanding. We know this all happened in broad daylight. 1 30 monday afternoon. Just a block away from the school near b street. Just a block away from the high school. A teenager was with his friends when a car rolled up. After a brief argument, a passenger got out and opened fire. The wounded teen jumped over the fence of the high school and collapsed on the school quad. He was found by a janitor and others who called for help. He later died at the hospital, leave being his friends in shock and his father and mother right now just dealing with the unimaginable loss. Just take a listen to this. He didnt deserve this. He was a good boy. He was a good boy. He was my baby. I just want i want the people to be caught. I want them to find the people who did this. They dont deserve to be out free. Theyre cowards. Taking my sons life. Reporter back here live, just simply unbelievable. Police say the teen was targeted but they dont believe this was gang related. The two suspects were last seen leaving the area in a dark colored sedan. The three teen thats were with the victim when he was shot are also cooperating with the investigation. Right now were talking to students and staff this morning, just trying to see how theyre dealing with this tragedy here on the campus. Were live in concord, rob malcolm, ktvu fox 2 news. Guys. Thank you, rob. The search goes on this morning for two inmates who escaped from the courthouse in palo alto yesterday. Ktvus alex savidge has more on how these men, these very violent men, got away. Reporter yeah. Sal, good morning to you. And the search has gone on around the clock for the two escaped inmates. Both men charged in connection with a violent Armed Robbery. They were here at the courthouse yesterday for a hearing. In palo alto. Thats when they made a dramatic escape. They were in custody, in restraints and they bolted from the palo alto courthouse. Actually came right out of these doors on the back side of the building and they hopped into a waiting getaway carp. Authorities are still trying to piece together whether these men had an accomplice who brought that car here to the courthouse. Authorities say mcclow and bevins were in handcuffs being escorted by a sheriffs deputy when they made a break for it. The inmates initially drove away in a red toyota camry but ditched the car a few blocks away and apparently got into a uhaul van. They havent been seen since. The Sheriffs Department says the inmates removed their handcuffs and restraints. A handcuff key was found on the ground outside of the courthouse. And they also found some of the leg restraints that inmates wear as well near the courthouse. Authorities are continuing to search for these two men and trying to figure out what went wrong here. I think going forward, we will of course were always monitoring our policies and our practices, looking to see what we can improve. Thats what we will look to do. Reporter the two were in court for that hearing yesterday. They are both charged with an Armed Robbery at a Verizon Store earlier this year. During the holdup, theyre accused of tying up employees and locking them in the bathroom before they stole tens of thousands of collars worth of phones and other merchandise. These two men according to authorities should be considered quite dangerous. Obviously if you see them, dont go near them. Just put in a call right away to 911. We put in a call this morning to representative for the Santa Clara County sheriffs office, trying to get an update on theon going search for the two escaped inmates, trying to see if they were spotted somewhere in the bay area. We are still waiting for a phone call back from the sheriffs office. And alex, it appears that they had this key while they were at the courthouse. It wasnt in that red sedan when they got to that sedan because they found it outside somewhere. Reporter they found the key outside. But, you know, as far as the detail of where they actually took off their their handcuffs and restraints, whether that happened outside or inside, that that is a little bit unclear. Okay. Reporter that is one of the details were trying to work out here. The key was found outside on the grounds of the courthouse or near the courthouse. They also found some of the inmates leg restraints as well. Whether bolted before they took the restraints off or after is a little unclear. Perfect. Thank you, alex. Moving to a developing story were following in pennsylvania. A Pennsylvania StatePolice Trooper has been shot during a traffic stop. This is pictures of the scene. The trooper was shot this morning on state route 191 in plainville township, 50 miles north of philadelphia. The troopers condition is not immediately known. There are many questions as to who shot the trooper and why and what is the situation is on the attacker. We know that the Governor Tom Wolf has tweeted he is praying for the trooper and his family. We will continue to follow the developing story and bring you updates on ktvu fox 2 mornings on 2 the 9 and online as well. We are also learning more details about the shooting at a church in Sutherland Springs, texas that killed 26 people on sunday. Authorities say the gunman had a history of Domestic Violence. And sent threatening Text Messages to his motherinlaw, a member of that church, just hours before the attack. He fired at least 450 rounds at worshipers. Tomorrow Vice President mike pence is scheduled to visit with the victims families. Were learning more about the victims themselves, many of whom were children. They range in age from just 18 months to 77 years old. Eight members of one family were killed, including a woman who was eight months pregnant. People in Sutherland Springs are trying to help each other cope with the grief of losing so many relatives and friends after sundays deadly shooting. Last night more than 100 people, thats about 20 of the towns entire population, gathered for a candle light vigil. There were tears, music and time to talk about the people who died in the massacre at the First Baptist church. This shooting has relaunched yet again another debate over gun control. President trumps reaction is not what i called a gun situation. He said it was too soon to talk about guns. That did not stop members of congress from publicly debating the topic. It is an unfortunate thing that the immediate place that the media goes after any tragedy or any murder is politicized. We dont need politics right now. I reject the notion that it is too soon to act. If not now, then when . We should ban assault weapons and bump stocks today. The air force admits it did not notify the proper authorities about the suspected gunmans conviction on the Domestic Violence charges. Now, if that courtmartial decision had been in his records, Officials Say it is unlikely he would have passed a background check that allowed him to buy the gun thats he used on sunday. Now the air force is investigating why that information was not given to federal officials. Coming up at 9 30, we will take you live to Sutherland Springs, texas to get more into the investigation and the motive for opening fire inside a church. Coming up on the 9, more of our exclusive jailhouse interview with derick almena, the man at the center of the ghost ship fire and we are live with the reporter who conducted the interview. A 2 investigates exclusive. For the First Time Since his arrest were hearing from the man at the center of the ghost ship tragedy. Derick almena was the Master Tenant at the ghost ship warehouse. He is facing 36 counts of manslaughter along with max harris. 2 investigates sat down one on one with almena about the fire and who is to blame. What started as a dream to build an Art Collective inside of oaklands ghost ship warehouse descended into a safety nightmare according to almena. There was a period where there was no power because the transformer caught on fire. There was a period of time where it was dark there. How long . About two months. No power for two months. Nope. I had to run a generator and go to the neighbor and tap into their power so we would have light. In 2014 theres way a transformer fire at the ghost ship. He pressed the owners for years to fix various safety issues but they refused. Then we would go to the landlord and we were describing it has to be stable. As is doesnt mean degrading. It means that it is at standard, a permittible standard. And the building never was. But the Public Perception is that you independently made changes to the space that made it dangerous. No. If anything, we made it safer. I put in a back door. People escaped through the back door. I took all of the grateds off of the windows. A friend jumped out of the window, was able to jump out of the window. I put in a front staircase. There was only a back one. The back one was incinerated in the fire. The pallet staircase that i built, it was a true form that i purchased and we did to spec. Right. And we styled it in a way that the last few feet was to pull gear, all of the sunday systems had wheels on them. I knew we were designing it for a cause. And for people. That, when you look at the photographs after the fire, that staircase was the only thing standing. Everything is gone. And it is like a hand reaching out. People could still come down that. So i built something awesome. It was amazing. I saved lives by putting that staircase in. Because legally i went to the building with one staircase in the back. Okay. Cool. I rented it. Im going to have events. I had an event. People came up the stairs that they gave me. If i didnt have my staircase, everyone would have died. Supposedly. Almena says his original Lease Agreement was made with eva ling who said it could be used as an Art Collective. I have to do what we need to do and make sure that power is up to standard. She was like, yeah, here is the zoning. And she she copied it and posted it on the email exactly what we can do and it fit the description of what i needed to happen there. You thought the building had Safety Standards up to a certain standard based on i thought it had electricity because it had plugs on the walls. I didnt show up with digital printers and projectors and cameras and sound systems. As soon as we plugged something in, the whole building fried. I had put so much of my money and energy and got all of the artifacts and instruments there. I had nowhere else to go at that point. So we had to make it work. I thought that if youre going to rent a building to a group of artists, as as the owner of the building, you have to tell the city, hey, im going to have im going to be collecting money every month and there will be humans coming in and out of this building now. What do i have to do to make sure that i can legally collect that money and legally hows this cooperative . It had never been inspected. Right. It was still listed. And they still in all of the newspapers it still says, Derrick Almena rented as a dry goods warehouse and changed it on his own, did it on his own without telling anybody, snuck in there. He rented it as a storage warehouse. Thats the story. It is not the story. I rented it as an art space, a community center, a cafe, boutique. That is all described. Did i give that to the city . I never moved into a place and told the city what i wanted to do. I told the landlord what i wanted to do. The landlord owns the building. They have to go to the city and say, hey, i think i and then theres a question, what do i think of the landlords. Deceitful and greedy. I didnt even know there was a waste lane in the place. There were no water coming into the building. Just empty pipe thats didnt go anywhere or do anything. I signed the lease, gave 20,000 and tried to turn on the water ask it doesnt work. We uncap something that we thought was the waste line and it is just a cap. Almost like they planted it there to make us believe that we could have a bathroom there. And we opened it and there is nothing there. So do you think they rented you an unsafe building . Im going to say it two times. Once for me, that you have to bleep. [censor] and second time, yes. Definitely. They definitely rented me something that they knew was unsafe. 2 investigates executive producer joins us live in the studio. His argument, the claim is that the owner gave him a building not up to code. I have been involved in leases of apartments but i always make sure that there is heat and water and electricity prior to signing a lease. Uhhuh. I mean, why would you even move in knowing this . So that was actually that we talked about in detail. One thing that you didnt get to see in this particular clip is he says he showed up and saw plugs in the walls and water pipes and he saw what looked like a waste line with a cap ton. Okay, this looks like everything that we need for what were trying to do here in this space. And he says later, after he had already put 20,000 down and signed this lease and committed, he said he plugged something in and the whole building fried. They tried to turn on the water and the water wouldnt start. And they opened the waste line cap where they thought they could install a bathroom and have facilities. And he claims that went nowhere. It was a pipe to nowhere. And he felt like he was stuck. Did he explain to the owners, im going to start a collective here. Im going to have my friends live here and do art. Or was he just saying, can i rent your building . So yes and no from what i understand from this conversation with him. He says that the lease that he signed which i havent seen and which we havent really seen the lease between the landlord. Yeah. He says they knew he was going to have an Art Collective. There would be other people, there would be welders and painters and performances and children. What is not clear to me is whether or not in the lease it says people will also be living here. He told me that the landlords were well aware that him and his family were living there. What isnt clear and what i havent seen on paper is who knew in the family how many people were living there and was that actually part of the agreement. Im surprised quite frankly. Im glad you got to talk to him. Im surprised that his attorney let him talk to you. If i was your attorney, i would say no way are you talking. Now that is admissible. Thats true. This is a conversation that we had with the attorneys when we could to speak to him at first. At first they had certain conditions. They dont want us to go in there and interrogate things like a prosecutor and argue things that will be argued in court. That was not my goal. He is really a piece of the puzzle in this tragedy that we havent heard from before. Theres been a lot of information going around about what was going on there, what did he know, how did he even get involved in this warehouse and living there and having this collective there. And this was a chance to really learn some of those details about what was going on. I assume you have tried the other person who is also. Max harris. Max harris. Yes. We have had a conversation with his attorneys as well about possibly having him on camera and having an opportunity for him to tell his side of the story as well. There are a lot of pieces of the puzzle. The preliminary hearing is set for next week. Monday. We will find out more information. In a criminal case, you have to look at how did this fire actually start and find out maybe that will help to determine if he will be found guilty by a jury if it goes to trial. That is the hitch. There wasnt a cause that was pinpointed in this. And he brings that up in the interview that you will see tonight. That he says nobody really knows how this fire started. So how can there be culpability and blame assigned to particular parties and why him and max harris and not any of the other people who were involved in the warehouse. It doesnt mean that it cant happen. Right. We will have an hour long version of this interview on ktvu plus at 7 00 tonight. Simone, thank you. Appreciate it. Coming up next on mornings on 2 the 9, two Bay Area College students found a way to remove divisive information on social media. Taking a look at the Emergency Alert system. The mayor of calistoga says business is about 50 what was it used to be. Not all back yet. A lot of work to be done. I spoke with someone in napa saying the locals all know what is going on. But the people who come to napa from around the world may have not gotten the message that everything is, you know, back to normal. Many people were critical the Emergency Alert system after the wildfires. Some received no notice about the fires. Sonoma county says the system is getting a much needed upgrade. The fcc ruled that all wireless carriers will be required to send Emergency Alerts to cell phones. That was a problem during the wildfires. Only those with land lines received the alerts. Many people dont have land lines any more and only have cell phones. Some say it could lead people to ignore warnings due to alert fatigue. Only about a third of the u. S. Uses Emergency Alerts on cell phones. The question of the day is do you think that cell phone providers should be required to send out Emergency Alerts. 82 say yes. 18 say no. Donald benson says i turn them off. The last thing i want is my iphone to go off at 3 00 in the morning for something in Southern California. Required, no, but they should be civic minded enough to want to do it. I think it should have been required already. The user should have an option to turn off alert its they wish. The thing about it is sometimes when you get alerts, too many, like they said, you might turn them off and you dont want one at 2 00 in the morning if it doesnt concern you. I err on the side of let me know. I would rather wake up and go back to sleep than miss something life saving. Thanks for talking to us. Coming up next on mornings on 2 the 9, taking to the links to help veterans. Coming up, how the game of golf is being used to help military Service Members cope with the effect of combat. Investigators have been very up front telling reporters, telling the local folks here what they have found and they believe the motive in this case was domestic. The shooter killed his grandmother in law. His motherinlaw had attended the church. He sent her threatening texts. What sparked this incident . Were hoping to get answers momentarily. In 2012, he was given a bad conduct discharge from the military, which should have prevented them from buying guns. But the air force failed to report it to the fbi. It should have been reported and put in the database. Thats why weve launched this full scale review. Reporter the top democratic is calling for expanded background checks to make sure it doesnt happen again, saying in a statement, these facts only reinforce the need to check background databases and expand who should receive such checks. But President Trump says no law could have prevented the shooting. When you look at the at the city with the strongest gun laws in our nation, chicago, and chicago is a disaster. Reporter history will remember this incident as the worst mass shooting in texas history. Authorities dont want history to remember the gunmans name. Publicly they have said his name for the last time and will only refer to him as the shooter from here on out. They dont want him to get glory or notoriety. You said that mike pence will visit tomorrow. Do we know whether or not the Vice President will come to the church itself . Reporter that is a great question. Theyre not publishing what he does. They dont want to give people a headsup. Theyre silent about what they will report about the Vice President s movements. We know from his twitter account that he will be meeting with Law Enforcement and some of the victims. He is bringing his wife. It is important for him and his family to join hands to help they will heal after the terrible tragedy. It has touched everyone. It is hard still cant comprehend this was a domestic disout and he had an issue with the motherinlaw to go into the church and launched 450 rounds. An 18monthold babely. Thats what gets me. What is interesting is how it was stopped by the two good samaritan. I wonder if they will meet with the Vice President. We will see. Lets switch to the local weather. Steve, it is nice and clear out there but really cold in the morning. That is correct. A few upper 20s. Half moon bay, parts of the san mateo coast never got below about 54, 55. Theyre already in the 60s. So i would not be surprised if half moon bay, santa cruz hit 70 degrees today. I went 68. Warmer on the coast than around the bay and inland. There is an event early breeze. Rain is on the way tomorrow afternoon and evening into early, early thursday. Lots of moisture down in Southern California and also arizona. It is now south of the las vegas, l. A. Line. As it comes in, it will push it out of the area. We have a ways to go before the system arrives. There is half moon bay, 61 already. You get the easterly breeze and there it is. All warmer than san mateo, belmont, san carlos and redwood city. Santa cruz is already at 57. I went 70 in santa cruz today. I think that will be one of the warmer locations. Clear skies. There is your easterly breeze. The off shore wind is in place. That is our system. Again, we have another 24 hours before it arrives. Tomorrow morning, we will start to cloud up. Not today. Sunny and mild. Temperatures near average to slightly below except on the coast where they will be above. Wednesday evening and into thursday, it looks like rain. How much rain . Santa rosa north, it will be okay. South of that, i dont think much. Another system sunday and monday might be better. I think along much of the coast from bodega bay down to the monterey looks nice. Then we will talk about changes tomorrow evening and into thursday. You guys. Thank you, steve. Youre welcome. Today President Trump is in south korea pledging u. S. Support against threats from north korea. This is video of the president and first lady arriving at a state dinner seoul. South korea is President Trumps second stop on his trip to asia. President trump called the crisis with north korea a worldwide problem. We will together confront north koreas actions and prevent the north korean dictator from threatening millions of innocent lives. He is indeed threatening millions and millions of lives. So needlessly. There have been protests against the president. They say the rhetoric could lead to water on the korean peninsula. Two uc Berkeley Students concerned about political propaganda have identified a program to identify programs that are run by bots on social media. They found a way to identify false or misleading links and stories on twitter. They took action after they saw suspicious russian bot accounts on twitter. They created an algorithm that lets twitter users install a bot check button. It can detect if it is from a human, automated account or one that has been hacked. It is a bigger rats nest than we thought. The possibility that a foreign actor could be influencing the way that americans in the United States think is so scary. This is a huge deal. And frankly it compromises the security of our own social media, our own opinions. The two students say they have reached out to twitter twice by email but have not yet received a response. For more on some of the other headlines we are working on in the news room, lets go to dave clark. Thank you, sal. Here are some of the top stories were following. It will feature more than 55 designs exploring the art and trends of womens shoes. For a look at what to expect, lets send it out to allie rasmus. Allie. Reporter people have long considered fashion a form of art. And the curators of this exhibit say shoes and footwear are definitely included in that. This is the San Francisco exhibit of something called a walk of art visionary shoes. These are the artworks on display. Definitely not your everyday footwear. But the idea behind it is to think of footwear as a form of art, along with other types of fashion. And so these shoes that youre looking at, there are about 60 on did i place at the project in gallery in San Francisco. They were created by students and graduates of the academy of art and design in jerusalem. Professor addie stern is the president of the academy as well. Thanks for talking with us. What is the inspiration behind or the idea behind shoes as art. Good morning. The idea of curating this show is really to bring the these 60 pairs of shoes from israel, from jerusalem. And it is about really thinking of the role or reflecting on this question of the role of shoes in modern society. It is also really dealing with this question of can a shoe be a work of art or if you cannot wear it, if it is not wearable, is is it still a shoe. Most of these are wearable. These are the toucan shoes. Some are wearable. Some arent. But then that raises a whole question of, you know, what purpose is a shoe if you cant wear it. Does it have some other aesthetic purpose. Exactly. And also questions about the aesthetics and functionality of shoes. Also part of Everything Else that we do at the academy is pushing the boundaries, the envelope and asking questions about those products and how can we do new, different attitudes in shoe design. It is about using very different materials and different techniques. It goes from very traditional techniques of leather and wood to 3d printing and robotics and the such. It is really about a quest. Because there are different media and different ways in which these shoes as artwork were created. And, you know, art critics always say you cant ever look at art without thinking about the context in which it is created. How are these some of these designs inspired by our environment here . Each one is different. If we look at this one which you can spot the silhouette of nefartiti. You would never expect to find this on a shoe. It is about creating a dialogue with culture, with the history of art, with different materials. Again, asking questions about how functional it should be. Can we use it or not. Quickly, do you want to show your favorite shoes . Yes. You just brought it back from your flight from israel, right . Yes. This one is made been a world famous artist. And it is basically shoes that were crystallized in salt in the dead sea in israel. Clearly this is no longer wearable. But it is different, it is original. We have never seen such a thing before. A lot of creativity on display here. Thank you. The exhibit is free and open to the public. They open tonight at 6 00. It is at the gallery on 246 powell street Near Union Square in San Francisco. It runs through november 21st. Back to you guys. 246 powell. Got it, allie. Thank you. Coming up next, could Colin Kaepernick be headed back on to the football field . Up next, gasia has more on staying full and energized during the next couple of months. All right. Halloween is behind us. Christmas knocking on the door how can you stay healthy and energized during the next couple of months. Darby jackson has been on the show before. I saw these fritters and i thought those are fried in oil. It is not a low fat pushment it is a satisfying bite. Exactly right. These are fried in coconut oil. Theyre going to help your body. What is an mct. A medium change trigliceride. Many of us say i know im going to pig out at the party so im going to be good and not eat all day. Oh, that is definitely not right. Totally wrong.
