As oakland as move forward with their plan to build a new stadium, residents are supporting the idea but others oppose it. We explore why next. This is the new comfort food. Grown right here in california, with absolutely no antibiotics ever. A better way to grow, a better way to eat. And it starts with foster farms simply raised chicken. California grown with no antibiotics ever. When oakland as announced they preferred the location near laney college, reaction was mixed. A group of students and rights group and Small Business owner said residents and businesses will be displaced. They formed a coalition called stay the right way. It includes environmental groups. On the other side is a group called, the root. It consists of business and labor leaders who welcome the new stadium location. We are joined by a roots Founding Member and he is steve stephenson. Anki for joining us. First of all tell me why use of port the location chosen by the team. I believe the site, we need to get to a Downtown Core site. I think thats the best site thats available. I think the Howard Terminal site was very attractive but when you see the environmental reports, and the railway and the power station all these issues, and apparently it will be colder than candlestick was. As a fan im not looking forward to that. I think this is the best opportunity for the team to get to the Downtown Core. Is part of the reason you decided to form the organization, is it because you heard right off the bat the opposition that was out there. Right when the moment they announced they wanted to build the college site, you heard this will displace people and disrupt the community. Is that when you decided to form this organization crack i feel like this is where the rubber meets the road. We can talk about it amongst our friends but if it Needs Community support, we need to be out to support it. I went to the Trustees Meeting and heard a lot of the opposition and took in a lot of the opposition. Some of which i wasnt aware of. I feel like a lot of the issues that got brought up to have solutions that will be a win for everyone. We are at the beginning now. I just wanted to be out there to show my support for the site and also listen to people in the community and see what their concerns are. And see what i can advocate as a proponent. Do understand their concerns . They feel like the cost of living could skyrocket and force people up like thats why i think the team is advocating for the city to put in controls now ahead of it. There is no agreement. The a stone on the land. This is all a conversation about getting there. I feel like there are things the city needs to do to make sure the displacement is sort of minimized to the most. I think you also listen to a lot of Business Owners who are excited about the potential traffic. I had no idea chinatown is having a huge foot traffic problem. As a Small Business owner, i know how valuable for traffic is. You listen to some of the people who are advocating for businesses, they are excited about the prospect of having more people filtering through the neighbor neighborhood and shopping and eating. I have friends who have businesses in the downtown Downtown Core. You have this core will people are trying to make it happen but the foot traffic is still struggling. Lets talk about your business. 1234 you are at 40th and webster. Its an area where 10 or 15 years ago was not the place to be. Talk to me about the change you have seen in the 10 years you have owned a business. When we came in, 10 years in march, there was a laundry mat on the street and that was the only other retail business. Something you could walk into. There was not a lot going on. I was given an opportunity by a friend of mine who opened a bike shop next door and we had the shop and we watched. We started with 120 square feet. We are now in almost 120,000 square feet. I feel like we have grown as the neighborhood group. I could have foreseen that. Could you have afforded your rent in what is now this area 10 years ago ask i did live in the neighborhood at that time. We had a two bedroom for 1400. Fema now its 3400. You see how people are feeling hurt because they could afford the 1400 and theres no way they could afford it now. 100 . Thats why think part of the as development is take the huge parking lot and put a parking structure there and build housing and have Affordable Housing within that. I think that could help to offset. The city needs to be on top of how do we get rent controls . How do we avoid speculation . To make this work for everyone. You worried during this process, this sort of could drive a wedge through the city of oakland and divide the city in some way . You have people who support the stadium deal and people who dont want the stadium on the other side. You get these divisions within the community. Do think oakland will come out stronger . I think they will come out stronger. I think all of the at the meeting there were both sides speaking. I feel like everyone is a fan of oakland. Everyone wants whats best for oakland. We have different ideas of how to get there. I think through this process of speaking to each other and coming to the meetings, well be able to hammer out something that is going to be beneficial for everybody. Sounds like you are telling people to get involved. Dont just whine about it online. Exactly. Come to the meetings. I dont go to attentive City Council Meetings but im going to start going. I want to put out there what i believe it also hear what other people are saying. So we can come to that middle ground. I dont want this to feel like this got forced on us. I wouldnt supported if thats what it was. I feel like in typical situations with Major League Teams or professional sports, the building just kind of happens to. To you. I lived in seattle for the late 90s and i dont remember public input being sought at all for the new stadium. You feel like the as are doing this the right way. 100 . Suspended year getting public input i think its crucial. Steve stephenson. 1234 records in the city of oakland. Thank you very much. Just minutes ago the red cross opened up a Service Center in santa rosa for welfare victims. Next we talk with them about all the help you provided and what sort of donations the red cross bill needs. A nineyearold girl visas her loses her aesthetic leg. I love that people in this community are willing to come together to make a difference for other peoples lives. Together, were building a better california. Welcome back to morning sun 2. October has been a mixed bag weatherwise. Last week rain and this week we will wrap things up in a big way. Its been more warm than rain and that was it. It is clear and warm here. There will be extremes all over the place. Our extreme will be on sunshine and warmer temperatures. Maybe some record highs with the deep system near the hawaiian islands. Ahead of that, will be a ridge of High Pressure arrest. They are looking for rain throughout much of the hawaiian islands. Thats a pretty impressive system to dig out far south this time of year. For us High Pressure is in charge. We get aloft and at the surface which means a lot of 80s. Things will be anywhere 1520 degrees above average and it will be even warmer tomorrow. Yesterday we have 70s and today we have 80s and 90 four the Sonoma County airport. Well above average. 60s and 70s. Livermore 71 degrees. That is 21 degrees warmer than at this time yesterday. Not you Mountain View 15. I think you get the idea. That offshore breeze they had gusts to 70. Tomorrow will be even hotter. If you want to see game one of the world series, that will be about 100 degrees. 95 la and 100 san diego. Extremely hot down there. Excessive heat warning and the fire danger for them. For us everything goes up and over, a few high clouds might drift over but they dont stand a chance. Sunshine and above normal temps. Clear at the coast. A little fog near eureka but not here. 80s for many and tomorrow even warmer. Record highs tomorrow. A couple of low 90s possible and it will be warm but gradually cooler at the end of the week and into the weekend. Right now halloween looks dry. Thats good. Thank you. Another sign of things getting back to normal in napa county. All Public Schools are open as of today. They were closed for two weeks because of the wildfires and all the smoke in the area. This morning allie rasmus joining us live from napa. It so important for the students to get back into the routine. Reporter weve had a chance to talk to several students who started their school the day today. They told how things were going. It just about every student says they are glad they are getting back into the routine after the school was shut down for two weeks. Schools across Napa Unified School districts, had to shut down temporarily because of the wildfires and evacuation orders and smoke from the fires leading to poor air quality. Some of the students we spoke to say their teachers took a more relaxed approach. They did a lot of talking. Students did a lot of processing and sharing stories and experiences and trying to get back into a regular routine. Sometimes i come back or Something Like this and you dont think they will talk about it and things , left and said. It was nice for someone to say lets talk about it park lets get things off our minds. You can ask me questions. Just how lucky most of us are and how grateful everyone is for being safe. No was harmed in their families or anything like that. Reporter the principal at napa high says they are working to get an idea of how many of their 1800 students were directly impacted by the fires in napa county. Is too early to know at this point how many may have lost their homes or how many students parents may have lost their jobs or income because of the fire. Teachers and staff were also impacted by the evacuations and power outages. The principal said one staff member lost a homework as we mentioned the district has 41 different campuses, 18,000 students. The district spokesperson says on each of the campuses today, and for the rest of the week, they will have multiple counselors available to talk to anyone who needs to talk. Back to you guys. Thank you. Evacuation orders have been lifted from most areas. That includes neighborhoods in the glen ellen Community Just north of sonoma. Some people return to that area to find out whether their homes were lost in the fire. Were had survived. Many people found nothing left this is what is left her one home which sat atop a hill overlooking the sonoma valley. This was once a 3000 square foot home. The family lived there says the nuns fire ripped through the area and they evacuated immediately grabbing Important Documents and medications. They left Everything Else behind. What makes this loss more devastating than the loss of all of our family heirlooms and were our family lived. We have lost everything. They are having to start over completely. Last night about 30 miles away, a fundraiser withheld for wildfire relief efforts. Many of those in attendance didnt know any of the fire victims but they say they wanted to do something to try to help out. Around 9 00 the red cross opened up a Service Center for Sonoma County residents affected by the welfare. Its at the Red Cross Center near the airport and it will be open from 9 am until 7 pm every day this week through sunday. For more thats being offered and for the donations needed, we are joined by cynthia shop. She is the marketing officer with the red cross. Thank you for being with us. Thank you for having me. Can we start with something that surprised me. There are still people saying out shelters s the staying at shelters after the fire started. We do still have a people staying in shelters and we are working with them to transition them. Shelters are important for Emergency Response when we are trying to figure out where people can go. Many people have been able to return to their home or get the fema vouchers for more medium term housing. We still have a few people in our case workers are helping them with the transition to longterm housing. What are the steps . What does midterm or longterm housing look like . There so many people who dont have homes. Work and they all go . Transitional housing through fema helps people with supporting their hotel or first months rent options. That is what we are looking at this time. And from there working with other resources associations in order to find longerterm housing options. What kind of help are you offering at the new center that opened up . The red cross servicenter that opened up today will be offering oneonone casework. What we do is we walked with each family oneonone and talk about the Recovery Process book do they have insurance . How they contacted their insurance . Are they veterans . Walk them through other Community Resources that they can access for support united way has offering for folks. Making sure people are aware of the resources. As well red cross is providing Financial Assistance for those who qualify. Cynthia do find when you are working at Service Centers, do find the victims of the fire come in are aware of all the help that is out there . Or do have to point people in the right direction to get the services and get that relief . In recovery people are at altering faces. There are some people who are still in shock even two weeks out. They are still trying to figure out what happened. And havent moved to the next step of you know planning forward. Our case workers are trained to be aware of where people are. Some people know the resources and are already down the road to recovery. We are just making sure their plans are full and another options. Other people it has taken a huge toll and we are there to walk with them oneonone through the weeks and months ahead. Cynthia can you tell us again, when it comes to donations, so many people said im going through my closet. Im going through the kids close in the garage. I know the message has been put out its money, not things that help. What is the red cross asking for now . First we are asking of course, if you are able to support relief efforts, three or time or financial gift, give to the charity of your choice or the organization of your choice. We have had a generous outpouring in the north bay of close and housewares. Many of the shelters have huge piles of stuff. We are working with partners to process all of those goods and make sure they are available for all the people who have been impacted by the fires. That at this time we are really looking to longterm recovery. Many of these people dont have places to put these items. Thing able to work with partners so they can get vouchers to access these materials later is what we are working on now. Cynthia shaw thank you for joining us this morning. Shes talking about the new servicenter open in santa rosa. As the red cross opens the new center we talked to with the question of the day and ask how you contributed to the fire relief effort . We find 30 pew percent say you donated money. 21 donate 21 dont get supplies. 6 spent money in the fire devastated area. Donated money, supplies and open home to strangers while evacuating. Kevin martel weighed in have a different response to he says right there very simple, he volunteered. And that goes a long way part thank you for responding to our question of the day by using our hashtag. So many inspiring stories. One involves a santa rosa girl who lost her prost medical examiner wheelchair in the fires. Thanks to workers at a clinic in San Francisco, she is walking again. Rob roth has the story. Reporter there are gifts that truly are priceless and this is one of them. Do you want to walk up and down . Reporter this nine yearold is about to give her prosthetic legs back. Can you stand up now . You okay. Reporter she visited the clinic in San Francisco on friday to see if her new legs fit and they do pick i can walk now. I can do everything by myself. I can run and i can do everything. Reporter up until about two weeks ago willie and her mom lived in the coffee park neighborhood. They escaped the fire by the car. I couldnt believe the fireballs were coming at us. I was super scared. I couldnt even believe like how scared i was parked we were very blessed when we saw a Police Officer directing us in the other direction. I knew we were safe. Reporter this is what their house looks like now. Among the rubble our lilies prost attic legs. Wow everything is gone. My wheelchair. My prosthetics. Everything. I can even believe like i have no words. Reporter words has not failed her is much as her body has. She has a congenital condition where joints will been from the waist down. That is until the hangar clinic in San Francisco made her a new parent legs for free. A new parent legs for free. To put that smile back on her face is priceless. We are surely bet slowly putting Humpty Dumpty back together again. Reporter the difference can only be measured in light years. When i get my legs, i get my confidence back. Immediately. Reporter it sounds like you have her confidence back now. Yes i do. Im super excited. Reporter lily and jessica rising from the ashes. In San Francisco, rob roth ktvu fox 2 news. Coming here thats coming up here, its halloween and many of us may be spending more this year in years past. We will break down the reasons and take a look at the psychology of holiday spending. Next. Hes brought us to the brink of nuclear war. Obstructed justice at the fbi. And in direct violation of the constitution, hes taken money from foreign governments and threatened to shut down news organizations that report the truth. If that isnt a case for impeaching and removing a dangerous president , then what has our government become . Im tom steyer and, like you, im a citizen who knows its up to us to do something. Its why im funding this effort to raise our voices together and demand that elected officials take a stand on impeachment. A Republican Congress once impeached a president for far less. Yet, today, people in congress and his own administration know this president is a clear and present danger who is mentally unstable and armed with nuclear weapons. And they do nothing. Join us and tell your member of congress that they have a moral responsibility to stop doing whats political and start doing whats right. Our country depends on it. Hey, guys. Where are the cookies for the. Bake sale . Bake. Bake sale . Need to bake in a hurry . Use new country crock buttery sticks with sunflower oil. Theres no softening required. So baking is delicious and easy. Ooh, cookies ah, ah, ah laughter we are just over a week away from halloween and this Year Spending is expected hit a record high. Americans planning to spend just over 9 billion per of course right around the corner is christmas. But now some Stores Including target say they are planning on waiting a bit longer before they roll out the Christmas Decorations and other items for the holiday season. We have been seeing halloween candy for what seems like months. Lets ring in his consumer psychologist to talk about how and spending, halloween spending. Why are we spending more . Halloween spending is through the roof because adults want to escape number one reason. Have to adults are planning to dress up. This is not really just about kids anymore. I think its a way for people to mentally get away from a pretty tough year politics and natural disasters and las vegas. It has been mentally hard and this is an escape. The other reason why think its huge, pinterest and instagram, these things inspire people. I think our creativity is wrapped up. And people look forward to sharing the things ive done. They get more bang for their buck if they come up with a cool costume. They can share with the world. You are saying families are spending not just many on the kids costumes, but you are saying bears spending even more money on their own costumes. They are little more expensive. 15 percent of pets are getting costumes too. Its not really a kids holiday anymore. Its kind of like everyones holiday park if the day of creativity and escapism. Its a nonreligious for the most part, nonpolitical holiday for people can feel like we are just getting away from it all. I think this year in particular, which is why these numbers are 9 higher than last year. It has everything to do with the tough year we have shared. We focus on what weve been talking about for two weeks . The north bay wildfires. Im very happy my immediate family didnt suffer any drastic losses. However i have a feeling inside me of and certainty. A little bit of fearful what if my house may have burned . I pulled back on my spending. Are there others out there like me or my the only one . Its funny because these sorts of things sit in our unconscious. And when we face uncertainty, we tend to pull back on spending. Things for you can get bang for your buck like halloween, where you can spend 20 or 40 of my kids are amazed i bought all the candy they wanted. Its not as big an investment. I remember we put off painting the house when there was uncertainty. 20. People will put off cars and the big things. In general, the economy feels good to most consumers per we havent seen a big pullback. I think the personal nature of the fires. It feels very personal and uncertain. We put the brakes on. Let me ask you about what target did. In dialing back the Christmas Creep is folks like to call. They say they heard from their customers they didnt want to see all the Christmas Decorations and christmas items out so early on in the season. They responded and dialed it back a notch. They showed some love to thanksgiving. Everyone forgets about thanksgiving. The big do think we will see this trend more and more . I dont. For the most part about half of consumers really like to start shopping early because they want to preserve the sanctity of the holidays for social engagements. The other house they that is over commercializing. Im burned out by christmas. Retailers want to get as many of those consumer dollars as they can. For the most part, even though they may not put up the decorations. For sure they will have merchandise because it is now or never. Half of the people have started shopping. I feel like target another retailers are taking the moral high road. They are there to take your money whenever you are willing to give it. It sort of a winwin. They still have holiday merchandise registered have twinkling lights. Kit yarrow its always a pleasure. Well be right back. This mug monday and now we have a chance to win the ktvu fox 2 news mug.
