A very important day for the evacuees being allowed into the neighborhood for the first time. In Santa Rosa Coffey park and orchard park along with the journeys End Mobile Home Park will have controlled entry starting in one hour. Cal fire announced this morning containment for all the major north bay wildfires went up overnight. The nuns fire which is the largest saw containment rise by 3 to now 85 containment. The north bay fires have destroyed at least 6900 homes and have caused 1 billion in damage. 50,000 people are still evacuated and that is down from a high of 100,000 last weekend. This is a map from the Sheriff Department showing coffey park in santa rosa. You can see the extent of the damage and in about one hour there will be a controlled entry into this neighborhood. Orchard park as well as journeys and. And. Residents will need id to enter these neighborhoods, the controlled entry will run from 5 00 pm to allow people to look for personal belongings, assess the situation and take time to grieve. Look at these neighborhoods for yourself on ktvu. Com just look for the map. Cardinal newman, a private high school in santa rosa suffered extensive damage. The question now is where do the students go . Alex savidge is live with father moses brown of Cardinal Newman. Reporter good morning. Much of Cardinal Newman here in northern santa rosa just north of here, much of that high school is gone. Most of the classrooms were destroyed by fire and so was the main office the library and the baseball and soccer fields. Beyond that students and staff do not have access to the campus yet. With that being said they will resume classes on tuesday. I am joined by father moses brown the school chaplain. How are you going to resume classes next week . Obviously we are making use of the internet putting some content online. Also through the generosity of other churches we will use their sites. You have more than 600 students on the campus and obviously they do not have access to the campus itself. You also have many students whose families lost their homes to the fire. How are you trying to help them through this incredibly difficult time . What is great about santa rosa is the Wonderful Community that we have in this area. Many people have stepped up to the plate to assist them with financial needs and also many people have opened their doors to people in need. Of course we have a lot of grief counseling and a lot of people available that they can speak with. Reporter i know you will have to kind of improvised putting up portable classrooms eventually write . Yes, we will have to make use of portable classrooms on much of the campus to have physical space. Another sign of hope is that the Cardinal NewmanFootball Team has been practicing this past week which is incredible. This is so soon after the fires. How big is that playing on monday night . That will be huge. It is very special particularly the fact that we are able to get to a game so quickly and the students are willing to participate and to play bringing some normalcy. Reporter the members of the Football Team and their coach went in after the fire to retrieve equipment from the locker room. That have been practicing around the north bay. Monday night you will face off against the rivals in the north bay. You can imagine that will be pretty emotional. Thank you so much. Half of the School Campuses in santa rosa will be reopening friday. The only campus lost in the fire was Hidden Valley satellite elementary. Coming up, the state superintendent of education will be joining us live to talk about how the fires have impacted schools in the north bay. We will show you the many schools that have canceled school because of terrible air quality as well. He will explain what is next as they try to get students back to the classroom and back on track. We will talk about how they are making sure kids hit the spots where they need to be. A santa rosa woman wanted to thicke a deputy who help them in a parking lot as the fire raged. Here is their story of survival. This was a hug that waited 11 days. It was about to come over the ridge above. Jennifer arrington shot this video escaping the tubbs fire. It was the only parking lot. Mark aldrich and other deputies were evacuating people. His Sergeant Moran fire was everywhere. Aldrich stopped and waved cars onto the pavement. Keeping people calm and listening to what is going on. On his radio he could hear the neighborhoods were burning. People needed to be rescued and he had three dozen people huddled and terrified. There were Young Mothers there was a fourmonthold baby. As flames got near everyone clustered together. We had to get into the center so i covered my son in the towel and then i covered myself intels. What was remarkable is over those five long hours the deputys demeanor keeping it light checking on everyone and giving the kids treats. Were you that calm . I would like to say that. Aldrich admits he was more scared than he showed. Some of them tried to leave. A couple of people didnt want to be here and you could tell. There was no other way to go. Aldrich flag day fire engine and figured the fire could burn over them fast but in the end it missed. His own son presented him with a handmade gift. A medal but he says anyone wouldve done this. They reached town and everyones then split. The deputy kept saying we will be all right to during the altercation. That is incredible. Lets get to the wildfire in mendocino where five more people have been identified killed in the fires. Steve stetler was found outside of his home. Remains of his girlfriend jenna on so were inside the home. Two more victims emerging gardener and her caregiver elizabeth foster. They died in the home that they shared. The remains of Margaret Stephenson were found in her home. Eight people were killed in the Mendocino County fire. In the Santa Cruz Mountains some who evacuated their homes are being allowed back to the neighborhoods. A stream of vehicles reentered the las cumbres neighborhoods. Higher humidity and cooler temperatures have allowed crews to get the upper hand on this fire. Rain overnight also helped. The bear fire has burned 320 acres. Containment is now at 45 . People are grateful to be back home. We have been talking about this recent rain it will help to clear the smoke but a spare the air alert is in place for sunday. Officials say due to the wildfires air quality in the bay area could be impacted for days to come. Ozone and smog levels could increase monday as High Pressure is building. Lighter wind with warm temperatures are likely with more particle pollution. Today is 26 years since the Oakland Hills fire that killed 25 people and destroyed 3000 homes. The fire first started on saturday, october 19. The fire flared up the next morning due to high wind. People lost their homes in the fire and say the Recovery Process was a learning process in which they learned about insurance, politics unity and activism. 49yearold darren white will be sworn in as oakland fire chief at city hall at 1 00 today. He has 30 years of fire service including 20 in oakland. The city conducted a rigorous search to find a leader who is accessible honest and transparent. Under senate rules they can now pass tax reform with a simple majority vote. Democrats cannot block it with a filibuster. Republicans are confident they can push their tax reform as early as thanksgiving. Customs and Border Protection released video of prototypes of president trumps border wall. The prototypes are between 18 and 30 feet high. They are on display near the port of entry in san diego. The wall will cost 22 billion and could take more than three years to build. The border currently has 600 miles of barriers including walls and fences. Two high school Football Players have been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a teenage girl. Christien kafton live in concord to tell us what School Leaders have to say. Reporter class in session with students in class at the high schools in question trying to process this latest story. Two male students. One from de la salle the other from Ygnacio Valley have been accused of raping a student who attends the all girl high school, carondelet. The female student tells authorities earlier this week she had been sexually assaulted last month by two male students. She says it happened at walnut creek. The Sheriffs Office issued a statement that says detectives immediately launched the investigation confirming the allegations. Two male suspects were arrested wednesday and booked into Juvenile Hall in martinez. Carondelet and de la salle have sent out notices to students and their families notifying them of the incident. This is not the first allegation of Sexual Assault at de la salle. Last year a Football Player was arrested and convicted of raping another student. At this point the investigation is underway. Sheriffs are asking anybody with information to come forward and share that information. 100 Service Industry workers and activists took to the streets of downtown san jose yesterday marching to city hall. They say that google coming to san jose will force out the workingclass. In june there was a plan announced for google to develop a complex near the stevens meat company. They are looking to build 12,000 Housing Units to accommodate the expansion. Commuter Shuttle Service has shut down in San Francisco after failing safety inspections. People will go and if it is not good you might not get a second chance. Luckily for me i have a great team behind me. I have such an amazing team and there is no way we will fail. I am a huge home cook. I cook to feed my family. When it comes to translating something you love and do fewer your family and then it turns into a moneymaking venture. I wouldnt want to taint my love for the cooking. For me it is not about moneymaking. I have these beautiful products in my home and they work for me. I am so proud to have this every single day. So, with our family everyone likes different things. You are at the point where you might be balancing three different meals. For me, my husband and i eat the same thing. My youngest daughter eats whatever but my fiveyearold is being picky because they have that independence. They just want to make their own decision. How do you get him to eat vegetables . So, i have not had the struggle. We have been lucky with them but i think incorporating them into their diet when they were young and not making it a chore. Also, get them to cook with you. There are studies that show they are more likely to try food that they help make. You say youre not great at basketball but i saw you this summer with a nice dish. There it is. That was all luck. Did you play sports growing up . I ran track and field. I also through the shot put and the disc is. My nickname was big a. A lot of power in that little package. As i was reading through the long list of things that you are involved in, i joke that work is mommys break. Especially because your husband travels a lot talk to me about how you balance that. It really does feel like a break. I laugh because i say what his free time . If i am not working i am being a mom. But i love it. If you are passionate it feels like a break when you are working. Obviously motherhood is my priority and the truth at the end of the day is there is no such thing as balance. If you had to choose something that is really your favorite food, what is it . The raiders beat the chiefs last night and it was a really wild game at the coliseum. He is looking long. It is caught by cooper. Derek carr and the offense firing on all cylinders early with a touchdown to cooper. Later in the First Quarter cooper with another touchdown and in the Second Quarter derek carr up the middle and he was tackled with a late hit and then there was a scuffle and Marshawn Lynch ran onto the field off the bench. Welcome to the season. Lets talk about the news by getting into dave clark. With new information on the Police Officer who was hit in a hit and run incident. We actually talked to the man accused of hitting him. Police have identified the officer who was critically injured when he was hit by a suspect. He was 32yearold elia lewin tankel. A fiveyear Police Department veteran, well respected and honored for Outstanding Police work. He is in intensive care with severe injuries. Police chief William Scott read a statement from his wife. He would want to say that he is like every other cop working in San Francisco. He goes to work to protect and serve. He does this with heart and passion. The officer was injured on wednesday when a suspect hit him with a car and did not stop. The suspect was later arrested. Tara moriarty had a jailhouse interview with the man accused of running down the officer. The 50yearold Maurice Johnson says he did not know the officer was hurt until after he was arrested. You hitting the Police Officer was not intentional . No it was an accident, i didnt see nothing. Trying to move out of the way. Do you have anything to say to the family . My heart goes out to him. I extend my condolences. I dont know what else to say. Johnson is facing 13 charges including assault with a Deadly Weapon and attempted murder. Johnson is reportedly homeless. He told us he suffers from ptsd as a result of a 2014 excessive use of force incident. Thank you, dave. The oakland symphony is kicking off the new season today. We are joined by the oakland symphonys longtime conductor, michael morgan. Thank you for being here. I should say happy birthday. This is a big one. The maestro is 60. It is like a fine wine you are Getting Better with age. You have been with the symphony since 1990. Youre celebrating your 60th birthday and you chose two important pieces of music to celebrate. So it is your birthday you can do whatever you want. I chose beethovens fifth because it is so famous. Everyone will know that one and then this one is a great life journey and i will explain before we play it. This one shows the whole lifecycle and the contrast between the pieces is extraordinary. I listened to all of beethovens 50th. Really the entire piece, i almost feel the public has been cheated by only knowing the first part. Right, it is extraordinary and there are several pieces like that. It is a good idea to listen to the whole thing. So, you were very young in Public School when you started your musical journey. You were conducting at the age of 12. Why did you pick up the baton . I was taking piano lessons at the age of eight and i got interested in conducting because it is visual. You are in the middle of the sound and that is the great part. Also i had older cousins they told me the conductor gives the beat so i thought what a great job i could do that. I am so happy that you do so much outreach in the local Public Schools. My little boys have started playing the trumpet and the cornet. It is unbelievable but i am doing nothing but encouraging them and im wondering do you meet with many children who have that love of music cramped by other input . Well, it is very time consuming. It is not like playing a videogame. It takes time but it is rewarding and you can continue doing it your whole life. No matter what people go into you know, i talked to Business People and i say how many of you studied an instrument and almost all the hands of the Business Leaders go up because music is so important in developing and imagination. I played violin from the second grade and to this day when i hear something we played i say that mommy used to play that to my kids. Lets be honest not everybody can take the family to the concert. I must say we try to keep it so the lowest ticket price is affordable. We are also in touch with families and we make sure they get in regardless. We want everybody to get into here the symphony. I was looking for a way to do a concert where returned the orchestra over to someone who was an interesting thinker and we had someone on our staff with the ability to do this. If you come to the concert january 19 you will hear everything from tears for freeze to the flight of the bumblebee to some spiritual music. All of this will be on one show. That is really interesting and then february 9 and our special series we have notes from lgbtq america. There will be a lot of people doing great programming on february 9. Next year we will have notes from africa. Every year we have notes from a different segment of the community because we live in such an interesting place. What is your favorite instrument . There is garlic and amazing wings on the other side. For these ducklings the green seasoning is imperative. This is something i grew up on. This is something that we use on everything. I created my version of the green seasoning. We switched up by putting in black garlic. This is actually fermented garlic. This actually gets this gorgeous black color. It is sweeter and smoother. It will add in a really nice flavorful sweetness to the green seasoning. Do you guys come together and talk about this . A little bit. There is so much influence. It is one of those things, she has traveled so much so when we talk about stuff it is so exciting to get in and talk about this. Like the green seasoning ive never really used that so that is what we are trying to do is we want to speak to the true culture of something instead of trying to make too many versions of things. So you kind of lean on your history. Definitely, this is our take on these traditional dishes but we want to leave the authenticity in there. So you have to try one of these. This is coconut curry cornbread. I feel like this is what made the popup so successful. This is coconut curry cornbread. There is this delicious curry sauce folded into the cornbread batter. This is very solid. What about patients in the kitchen . My wife says she has no patients in the kitchen it is her restaurant. I feel like we are super patient. Most people would probably disagree. I am patient, but i am also fresh and new to this so it is exciting. Come back in like three years. I was asking her earlier about going from a popup restaurant to a bigger venue in a bigger building. What advice do you have for her trying to make the transition . Keeping what she had but also bringing in the new stuff. For anybody, it is one of those things that was instant success. People really related to the flavors and really enjoyed it. Is just about making great food. In restaurants we get caught up in the pomp and circumstance but the idea is to cook great food and give people something they will remember and they will come back. One of them is mingo and the other has that green seasoning. So what is your favorite on these . I love spice so the green seasoning is the way to go. Neighborhoods wiped out by fast moving fires with totals to be tabulated. So far the fires have claimed 42 lives. 350 square miles have burned. That is 1 third of the size of rhode island. 6900 homes were also destroyed. Finally reason for hope for evacuees as they are being allowed into the neighborhoods. Evacuation orders were lifted for communities like calistoga. In minutes a few neighborhoods in santa rosa will open. Coffey park, orchard park and the journeys End Mobile Home Park will be lifting evacuations. People in sonoma are expressing gratitude to First Responders. A number of signs were found wind up thanking the First Responders in front of city hall. It is a heartfelt display of thanks in sonoma. This has been an incredibly emotional past two weeks. We spoke with a man who stayed behind in napa and assisted firefighters in their work. He said last night he spoke with a man in his 70s with a knee injury who rescued two elderly women from their home as the fire was raging toward their houses. I went to knocking on the doors but you can only hope. I called my neighbor i said wakeup in case there is a fire. It is unpredictable with these fires. You think you have five minutes but you dont.
