Both of these very good signs for cal firefighters as they try to get control of the bear fire. The fire did settle down overnight. One of the things they wanted me to get across to folks, they received calls into the night up until midnight last night about people concerned that the fire was making a run. They say that does not appear to be the case. The fire has not made a run into surrounding areas. Firefighters telling me that they got calls as far away as saratoga and the fire is certainly not in that area. It seems that the fire has been largely contained or self contained, not that they have increased con tapement, but largely self contained in the area where it did burn yesterday. We are expecting that briefing to detail, again, how that fire developed overnight. We can tell you that it was smokier this morning at the command post where we were earlier. Finally a pattern change here. It took a long time. We finally see the breeze turning more from the north northeast which it has been for the last eight days to west southwest eventually. The temperatures drop. 83 to 75. 75 to 67. 85 to 79. And 80 to 75 in san jose. Low clouds making a push even on the santa cruz coast. The bases we need to get it up around 2,000 feet. A few 30s. East bay temps, low 40s. Walnut creek at 42. San ramon 41. Out by the concord pavilion, 43 degrees. Upper 40s and low 50s around el sobrante and even into berkeley. 39 up in ukiah and around lake tahoe. If you are heading up to the sierra, today is fine. Tomorrow we will start to see increasing clouds and then the breeze will pick up late thursday, early friday. Could be an inch or two of snow above the 6500foot level. The temperatures will be dropping there as you go into friday. You see this low. It is retrograding. The front associated with it is right there. On its way. Not bad. Looks good. Get the tail end of that. It will weaken as it moves south. And as far as the timing goes, tomorrow afternoon, evening to the north. It may take overnight into friday morning before it makes it down towards the south bay. We still have a ways to go on the system. Usually on these systems the first one to come through is later than sooner. The rainfall looks good, especially to the north. We will see if it holds. Anywhere from a quarter of an inch to three quarters of an inch possible. If it holds to the santa cruz mountain,. 06 for Boulder Creek which is the best scenario we could ask for. Cooler today. Highs in the 60s and 70s. Hazy and low clouds on the coast. 60s and 70s there. We will continue this into tomorrow. Big fog bank tomorrow. In fact it will go well inland. Right now crews fighting the bear fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains are getting ready for their assignments for the day. A helicopter was sent up a short time ago to assess the fire situation. It will be checking what happened overnight when crews could not move to the fire scene. The latest numbers that we have show more than 270 acres have burned and four homes have been destroyed. The fire is at this point 10 contained. With he know another 140 homes have been evacuated. We talked with one man who was thankful to have a few minutes to grab things and get to safety. My wife filled her car and my truck is full over there. I have my cat and dog here. And weve got clothes and stuff. Six firefighters were hurt. Four were treated and released. The other two remain hospitalized this morning. None with serious injuries. We expect to hear how far it expanded overnight. Now that the sun is up, we plan to get updates on the tubbs fire. The nuns fire also burning in sonoma and napa counties grew 1500 acres but fire crews got more containment now at 80 . The pocket fire near geyserville did not get bigger overnight. It is 63 contained now. Were waiting for an update on the atlas fire. The last report had it contained at 80 . The time is 7 33. Thousands of fire evacuees are going back home but it is hard to feel comfortable because many of the fires have still not been contained. Alex savidge is in oakmont this morning. Tell us the latest why some people there are nervous. Reporter people are returning home who had evacuated from many of these communities along highway 12 here, including oakmont, where we are this morning. Even as they come back, there is still an active fire fight going on in the areas. Were at one of the staging areas right off of the highway here. You can see fire trucks pulling in here after they spent all night after the crews spent all night out on the front lines. One of the big concerns in this area is a small fire called the oakmont fire that is burning just north of the nuns fire, east of highway 12. It was a small spot fire that started over this past weekend and quickly grew to about a thousand acres. In order to try to stop the spread of that fire, there were some back fire thats were lit last night. And people in the oakmont community, theres also a large Senior Development on the west side of the highway. They were concerned last night as they saw some of these back fires being set because there was a lot of active flame on the other side of the highway. Last night crews set the back fires. Theyre trying to get the oakmont fire to sort of merge with the nuns fire, the larger nuns fire, so both of those fires eventually will burn out. We take a great deal of consideration and evaluation before we commence a firing operation. We study the weather and we make sure that we have the adequate resources to contain the fire. But there are no guarantees. We would rather take this risk than letting the fire burn on its own and exposing us to more time where things could go wrong again with the weather and burning conditions. Reporter and this was the scene yesterday, just down the road in the community of glenn helen, north of the city of sonoma. Evacuees returning home after more than a week and a half being having to stay remain in shelters or staying elsewhere. And, again, a lot of people returning home. Still, more than 30,000 people waiting for the allclear to return. A lot of evacuees still have not been able to return to their neighborhoods to see what is next. But, again, the fire fight itself certainly goes on. Thousand of firefighters on the front lines. In this particular area, the big concern is the small fire called the oakmont fire. Theyre starting back fires to try to get itself to burn out. That will be the case for the next couple of days. Thank you, alex. Lets run down south to get the latest on the bear fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This morning we had a new injury that brings us to six injured firefighters on the fire. The fire activity was much calmer last night. Firefighters were able to get a lot of work done. It was much cooler, a little higher humidity. And today, we will be hitting it hard again with the helicopter drops, just like we were yesterday. So we should be able to make some significant progress today. Any questions . What are the challenges. Yeah. As we have been saying, the topography is the major challenge on this fire and is really what has contributed to our injuries. These mountains are steep and theyre rugged. And the access is tough. Just on dirt roads and the the way that the firefighters are attacking the fire, with the direct fire line, you know, gets them into that ground that is really steep. What about the firefighter injury today. We had a firefighter that had burns to his hands. And he is being treated at the hospital. Is he going to be okay . Yeah. The report that we got was Second Degree burns. He should be okay. The chief mentioned this morning that go ahead. Sorry. [inaudible] [inaudible] what are the concerns for today and where are you focusing your energy. Yeah. The same threats we were looking at yesterday we are looking at today. And that would be, you know, any potential for the fire to [phone ringing] dont worry. My phone is ringing. So were looking at some of the same threat thats we were looking at yesterday in terms of the risk of the fire spotting across our drainage and burning up into where all of the homes are. And thats what were repaired to deal with and working towards containing today so that doesnt happen. Those homes are evacuated, correct. Those homes are evacuated and we have structure protection in place. We want the surrounding community to know that that this fire is really burning in the area that was projected to be burning in. We havent had unexpected fire growth to threaten other communities. The folks who are really concerned about, you know, what theyre seeing from the fires up north is not is not anything that we expect to happen down here. And so people in santa cruz and saratoga dont need to worry about this fire threatening their community. The firefighter that received the burns this morning, is he the one in icu . I dont know if there is ai firefighter in the icu. I know there is a firefighter who is still hospitalized. I dont know the details. Youre talking about the broken wrist. Right. Maybe that was not icu. He had some injuries on his face and he is undergoing some treatment for that. Hes going to be okay. Listening live as we get the latest from cal fire talking about the bear fire burning in the Santa Cruz Mountains. We were on this as break news yesterday morning. Here we are still a developing story. 270 acres have burned. The fire is 10 contained. We heard that a sixth firefighter has been injured while fighting the bear fire. He has Second Degree burns to his hands. Good news to pass along. We just heard the woman from cal fire say that conditions are calmer today. It is cooler and much more humid. This is great news weatherwise for firefighters. She says cal fire plans to hit the fire hard again, in her words, by air. Yesterday we were watching drops carving outlines where the fire could not progress. Many water drops by helicopter. You know, this aircraft can go where the men and women on the ground cannot because of the steep rugged terrain. That was a really good update. We will be checking back with cal fire throughout the morning on mornings on 2. The time is 7 41. Thousands of people were left homeless after the fires in napa and sonoma. The white house is aggressively promoting the plan. But democrats say most middle class americans dont like what theyre hearing about the proposal. If we get tax reform done this year, it would be extraordinary. They dont know the half of it in terms of this plan. There could be a deal on capitol hill where republicans agree to reinstate payments to Insurance Companies under the Affordable Care act in exchange for democratic support of the president s tax plan. The time is 7 45. A federal judge in hawaii blocked most of the travel restrictions in President Trumps latest travel ban just hours before it was due to take effect. Im looking to see if there are any problems. There was an accident at ten after. That was blocking the left lane. I think that now its still there because look at all of the slow traffic. I know it is hard to see with the haze. But it is going to be slow. Lets move along to the san mateo bridge. You can see westbound 92, it is going to be busy getting up to the peninsula. And if youre driving on 880 northbound, you will see slow traffic beginning right near the coliseum. Southbound traffic according to the road sensors slows after 238 and sticks with you way below the speed limit until you get to fremont and then it slows a little bit less. Finally gets better by the time that you reach milpitas. 7 47. Lets bring in steve. Thank you, sal. It is smoky and now fog. Southbound 101 im going to highlight it here is not doing well because of an accident near cesar chavez. I would recommend staying off of 101 and getting on 280 or around city streets and not using 101 south because of that accident in San Francisco. It might start affecting the bay bridge. Back to the desk. Thank you, sal. Were following continuing news about the bear fire. Christien kafton has been talking with the firefighters. A sixth firefighter has been hurt, christien. Reporter yeah. Unfortunate news that we have heard about that sixth firefighter injured here fighting the bear fire. From what we understand, that is a Second Degree burn injury to that firefighters hands. He was pulled from the line and now being treated an air area hospital. We have good news. That good news seems to be the weather so far this morning and overnight cooperating with firefighters in the santa cruz area. We had cool temperatures, relatively high humidity and fog in the area. All of those factors helping to keep this fire low to the ground and prevent it from spreading too wide. The fire did settle down overnight. They did get a lot of calls overnight from people around the area concerned that the fire was making runs into surrounding areas, including into saratoga. To be clear, the fire is not making a run into that area. At this point, the fire now estimated to be 270 acres. About 10 contained. Fire crews will be hitting the fire hard today, trying to prevent it from making a run to the homes in the area. Were looking at some of the threats that we were looking at yesterday in terms of the fire spotting across the drainage and burning up into where the homes are. Ron so that is really their priority, trying to prevent the fire from making a run into the las cumbras area. We will start to see the helicopters go up. Surveying the area, getting a better sense of how it developed overnight. Dropping water in particular areas, trying to steer this fire away from the inhabited areas. Later on this morning, we are expecting the air tankers to start drops as well. They want to try to get a cap on this fire quickly. The concern is that if the winds do build here later on this afternoon, that fire could make a run up into some inhabited areas and devastate the homes in that area. That is, again, why they are trying to make this aggressive move on the fire this morning. Back to you. Thank you, christien. Firefighters made some progress overnight. It has burned 271 acres and 10 contained. That is double what it was last night. And cal fire officials are encouraged by the progress. We havent had unexpected fire growth to threaten other communities. Folks who are really concerned about, you know, what theyre seeing from the fires up north, it is not it is not anything that we expect to happen down here. Six firefighters have been hurt battling the bear fire. Two remain in the hospital. One with Second Degree burns. The other four have been treated and released. We will have a live report from Christien Kafton on the bear fire coming up in our next hour. Now updates on the battle against wildfires in the north bay. The atlas fire is now 83 contained and it also did not grow overnight. The pocket fire near geyserville did not grow overnight and is 63 contained. The nuns fire grew 1500 acres but fire crews increased containment to 80 . Thousand of fire evacuees returning home in the north bay as crews continue to put out the fires. Allie rasmus is live in the oakmont community. I imagine that some of the neighbors are more than a little anxious. Reporter yes. They are back home. Many people here in the oakmont area. It is situated along highway 12 between sonoma and santa rosa. They were allowed to return yesterday. Still anxious moments for people as they come back. There is still active fire not too far away from where they live. We will get to video and show what you were talking about. Last night fire crews set some large back fires in this area. And this is where theyre battling two separate fires. One of them is the large nuns fire. And then also the smaller oakmont fire north of there, the oakmont fire actually began as a spot fire over this past weekend and it grew to about a thousand acres, with just 27 containment at last check. Crews set the back fires in the hills. And people in the oakmont area who had just returned home yesterday after evacuating their homes, they were certainly anxious as they watched that fire burn. But firefighters do have a plan here. And with that being said, i want to bring in jay smith with cal fire, joining us live this morning at this the staging area for firefighters here. This is one of the more active areas of the fire. What is the plan here for the oakmont fire and the nuns fire . Two of the more active fires. Yes. So what were doing now is were still continuing on our efforts to try to merge the two fires together. Our burning operation yesterday and the day before were successful. So were just continuing to do that, mop up, get our crews in to cut hand line along with bulldozers and join the two fires together. Reporter obviously until the fires are fully contained, you dont ever relax. But you obviously you feel confident enough it would seem that the fires arent going to jump your existing containment lines because you have allowed people to return to the neighborhoods. More people on the roads in the oakmont area. How confident do you feel, let me ask it this way. Im extremely confident in our crews and their ability. And also we do have plans in place. So were up there with our hose lines and we have helicopters and fixed links to help support the fire operations. Were extremely confident in that and that is why some of the residents have been allowed to return on the south side of the highway. Reporter people may feel anxious when they come back and see the active fire. A lot of that is back fires today and over the next couple of days. Is that right . Thats correct. That is our burning operation that we are continuing. Reporter okay. Lastly here, were going to get a big shift in the weather. Actual moisture, rain. Yes. Reporter coming. Starting tomorrow. How big is that . Thats huge. Thats huge for everybody. Huge for the fire activity and the fire personnel out here. We will have the decrease in temperature and a raise in the relative humidity which is needed. Reporter jay smith kind enough to join us this morning with cal fire. Thank you very much for your time. Thank you. Reporter again, this is one of the more active areas of any of these large wildfires here in the north bay. As you just heard from jay smith with cal fire, they ever successfully been able to get two of these fires, the large nuns fire that was burning north of sonoma, and also into napa county, they got that fire to merge with the smaller spot fire, the oakmont fire. Thats exactly what they wanted the fires to do. They wanted them to burn into one another. Once they burn into one another, then eventually they burn themselves out. Good work by everyone there. Thank you, alex. Crews are busy watching for flareups at a grass fire burning in the east bay. This is the fallon fire because it started near fallon road east of dublin.
