Mandatory Evacuation Orders have been lifted for areas near the silverado country club. We spoke with one person as he went home last night. He said hes grateful his home on burningtree court narrowly avoided the fire. I think you are more empathetic when you almost experienced it yourself. You know what it felt like. I may have lost everything that i own and im homeless. Thats pretty devastating. Authorities lifted Evacuation Orders for the areas around Monticello Park and the avenues. We saw a lot of water drops yesterday. It was nice to see the containment percentage was up. Not a lot but it was up. We do have better firefighting conditions. Its colder in the breeze is not that much right now. It will pick up later. This morning it is cool and clear, a lot of smoke in the air but not as much as the last couple of days. We would end up with 70s and the winds will pick up. The red flag warning kicks in at 5 pm and goes through saturday at 11 pm. This will be an evening into tomorrow event. This morning, and most locations have less than 1015 Miles Per Hour. After 10 00, northeast near santa rosa and atlas peak around 25. This is nothing like 60 or 70 like we saw sunday night and monday. Then maybe 25 or 35 Miles Per Hour gusts the temperatures will not be as warm. 30s and 40s right now. In santa rosa, north wind at 12. Humidity, 76 . That reads 12 by a longshot. Atlas peak, northeast and 32 . Overall we are looking for not much of a breeze, especially toward fairfield. Santa rosa covered northwest at 5. A system in the Pacific Northwest that comes through will pick up the wind this evening. We are looking at traffic in the burned area and right now highway 37 and highway 101 remain open. As we push in you can see traffic is moving well on 37 and on 101. Traffic is going to be okay on 101 between Windsor Commons santa rosa, rohnert park and petaluma. Some of the off ramps do remain shut down including hopper, bicentennial and mendocino. 37 will move along well. We do have 580 westbound some slowing coming in over the Altamont Pass. Traffic is a little slow. Its better than it normally is at this time. Sometimes on friday we get a break 680 looks okay until you get to the sunol grade. South bend 680, there is a crash and traffic is going to be slowing down. This is an injury accident involving a bus and a car. There is about a mile backup on 680 south down the sunol grade. And alternate would be 880 orchid on the freeway after mission boulevard south. This is 880 north and southbound. Traffic is moving along okay. Traffic on the approach to the bay bridge looks okay as well. No major problems. A new voluntary Evacuation Order has been issued and napa. People who live in the areas west of highway 29 between the oakville grade and rutherford road are being asked to gather their belongings and standby in case the nuns fire comes closer. Several vineyards are in that area east of highway 29. Another fire near highway 29 in yountville continues to grow. Top areas of concern are mount veeder and dry creek. Many people have left but people still there have been told to be ready to evacuate. This is the largest fire weve seen. Who knows what it will do. Our houses on the edge of it. We are prepared to evacuate. A little on edge. We have basically everything packed up. Its lined up in the hallway and ready to go. Weve had significant fire activity on mount veeder for the last couple of days. Is working down to dry creek. We have numerous houses there that we are attempting to protect. Flareups continue to be a risk throughout the area and fire crews plan to continue airdrops throughout the day to steer the fires away from homes and businesses. Residents and Business Owners can start applying for federal disaster aid to cover losses. Fema announced there are grants available for temporary housing, home repairs and property losses not covered by insurance. Federal assistance will likely be expanded to other counties and fema said it will offer more assistance in the near future. Tax relief could be on the way to people whose properties were damaged. The county announced it is working to identify and adjust the Property Values and tax bills on properties that have more than 10,000 in damage. Taxpayers should contact their lender to inform them of the change in status of the property. The California National guard shared this video. You can see one of the countless water drops above the wildfire. As many as 1600 personnel are here supporting the firefight. The air quality is the worst its ever been recorded in the bay area. The bay area air Quality Management district is recommending you stay inside and use your airconditioning to recirculate the indoor air if possible. Schools are keeping students inside at recess and many have canceled classes altogether. We are seeing air quality like we see in beijing right now. Air quality in the bay area is the worst weve ever recorded. Air filtration masks are becoming hardtofind. They are selling out as soon as they are restocked. The main concern with the smoke is tiny particles that can lodge in your lungs or get into your bloodstream. We are wearing the masks in marin county. School is canceled today. And all over the bay area. In Sonoma County, people are banding together to help each other. Lets bring in alex savidge joining us live with more on the story in Sonoma County. Reporter good morning. We have the masks on here at this particular location because the smoke is very thick. We are north of sonoma along Middle Mountain road. There is an incredible effort underway to try to keep the flames from spreading into the city of sonoma itself. You are seeing that effort right here. I just spoke with this crew from oakland. They have been setting this backfire. This was such a short time ago and theyre trying to make a stand and keep this fire from crossing this particular roadway. Butte mountain road. Its coming towards sonoma from the north and they want to keep it at bay. This crew is also doing structure protection because there are a lot of homes along this particular road. All the people who live here have been evacuated. Those homes are empty and firefighters are standing by, trying to make sure those homes are protected. Let me show you this scene from yesterday. Neighbors here in sonoma watched air tankers moving in. They were making airdrops on the leading edge of this fire. On the ground we did see bulldozers that came in to carveout large fire lines and breaks to try to keep the flames from moving down into the Sonoma Valley itself, home two 30,000 people. In the city of sonoma there are no mandatory Evacuation Orders for the city although there are mandatory Evacuation Orders for People Living on the outskirts of town. Many people have chosen to leave anyway. The downtown area has been empty. Some people are staying behind. Now you have everyone fleeing and then what . Its a tough call. And we are very aware of all the damage thats happened but this has been running for three days. Reporter we talked about the red flag Warnings Issued yesterday. The wind turned out to be fairly light over the last 24 hours. That has allowed firefighters up here and the north bay to make quite a bit of progress on these fires. This complex of fires, including the tubbs fire and the nuns fire, are now considered at 10 containment. As we know, this community is not out of the woods yet. These fires are still actively burning. As we bring you back out here live, this is not part of the leading edge of the fire. This is the backfire set so this area can be burned out as the fire approaches and hopefully stop the spread. There is a lot of concern about the way the conditions will change as we move throughout the day today. We are expecting wind to pick up later in the evening. That is causing quite a bit of concern. Im glad to see you are wearing the mask. Im sure it must be awful there. What did you see . Reporter in terms of the air quality in this area, there are times you dont feel like you need it. It goes from bad to worse to even more worse. This is one of those spots. We started driving here, Blue Mountain road is our exact location, when we started driving up the hill, the smoke was some of the thickest use have seen. Thats probably in large part because of these backfires. The mask is very necessary in this area. Can you tell us the route you took to get there and what it looked like . Other firefighters along the way . What did you see on the way up there . Reporter we did not see many firefighters. We came up what was that . We came up along highway 12. Sometimes i lose track. We came up highway 12 passed the sonoma raceway. There is a major Evacuation Center there, by the way. Many people are staying there. We saw a lot of rvs camped out in one of the fields. You do not see a lot of firefighters as you drive up here. Thats because they are up here on these back roads. Look over here and you can see. There are all the rigs parked right there. San Francisco Fire Department engine 17. And fun of them, members of the Alameda County, im sorry, alameda city Fire Department. We have a lot of bay area crews that are here. You dont really see them on the way up here, you see them on the back roads. Especially these crews from some of the cities in the bay area. They are doing structure protection making sure that if this fire does move closer to the city, they can try to protect those homes. Alex, be safe out there and we will check back in with you. These other things can be replaced. Captain beach with the Alameda County Fire Department also lost his home. After getting his daughter to safety, he went back to evacuate his neighbors knowing his house had been destroyed. The International Association of firefighters has set up a fund to help. Highway 101 is open from petaluma all the way to santa rosa and windsor but there were plenty of closures in the fire area. Some ramps may be closed. Highway 128 near calistoga is closed and is also closed in the Lake Berryessa area. 29 is open from st. Helena and down to napa. Highway 12, there are detours but has mostly reopened. In the last few days weve had more openings but there are still a lot of local closers and chp staff closures in the area. Lets talk about the gilroy through san jose commute. Traffic looks good as you drive through morgan hill and into the main part of san jose. The gilroy super commute. We are also looking at a commute on the sunol grade that is slow because of a bus and car accident. Southbound 680 as you drive down just before north mission near andretti road. Traffic is backing up from south mission. Its going to be slow from highway 84 down to and drawdy road. Give yourself extra time or use 580 to 880 which at this time looks pretty good. Lets look at the commute for the bay bridge. Westbound traffic will be relatively light getting into San Francisco. I do see a lot of smoke there at the toll plaza. It moves around depending on the wind speed and direction. Its really thick up in sonoma right now. Yesterday it tended to favor areas to the west. We had a northwest wind yesterday. Better air quality is forecast for today but still not great. Unhealthy for most and very unhealthy in the north. Levels have come down a little bit. They were probably pick up again tomorrow because the wind will pick up and we will get more of the north and northeast breeze. 42 in napa. 60 at noon with a high of 76. Fire weather warning, red flag, that starts at 5 00 p. M. And goes through 11 pm saturday. The wind speeds will not be that much through this evening. By tonight they start to pick up. After 8 pm you will see the Sonoma Valley pick up, atlas peak, and napa. 2225 Miles Per Hour. That will pick up overnight into early saturday. Gust between 3540 the cookie again from this next system. This system will be stronger than the one we had yesterday. Atlas peak is one of the lowest so far. 32 with wind out of the northeast at 7. Some areas are seeing 60 humidity. Mount diablo, 38 and north at 34. In the oakland hills, 48 depending on wind direction. Not much of a breeze toward fairfield or vacaville yet but that will pick up later this evening. 19, truckee. Another freeze warning in Mendocino County. There is a northerly direction there but the freeze warning will go until 9 00, similar to yesterday. This is the system in the Pacific Northwest, after that goes through the winds will pick up. Windspeed would not be bad this morning but later tonight and overnight and saturday morning, they will increase but decrease saturday afternoon and will start to warm up as we head into sunday and monday. 60s and 70s for the temperatures. Authorities say looting has not been a significant problem in the evacuation zones but yesterday deputies arrested Morgan Plummer of sonoma. A neighbor reported seeing him take sunglasses out of a car in an evacuation area. When deputies searched him they found the sunglasses as well as an emergency fire shelter taken from a fire filter and tools that had previously been reported stolen from a Vineyard Management company. The home of peanuts creator, charles schultz, burned in the fire. The widow was able to escape the home but family members say many of the memorabilia items were lost. The good news is most of the collection of original comic strips are at the charles m scholz museum and Research Center in santa rosa. The museum was not damaged by the fire. In the valley, vacaville, west and southwest. This is the system going by in the Pacific Northwest. We have a look at 37 and 101. They are open. You will see some closures in the santa rosa area. Some of the closures are impactful locally on roads that are not freeways. 101 is open. There were plenty of off ramps between santa rosa and windsor that are closed. 37 is open to traffic. Lets talk about 80 westbound. The solano super commute is not too bad. A little bit of slowing on 37 out toward marin county. Lets go to the sunol grade were southbound near 680, there was a bus and a car that could into a crash. The right lane is blocked. Traffic is backing up before highway 84 getting out of pleasanton, give yourself extra time. If you were on the east shore freeway, traffic here is moderate. At the bay bridge toll plaza, metering light have been turned on. Additional fire crews are coming in to help battle the wildfires. The majority of the fires are still considered outof control. Allie rasmus is joining us live from napa county with information about new advisories. Reporter those advisories were issued around midnight. They affect residents and napa county west of highway 29 between rutherford lane, rutherford road and oakville grade. We are in that advisory area. What you can see behind us is part of the nuns fire. This is the foothills around mount veeder. Oakville grade is where we were driving up, less than a mile from highway 29. We are near the carmelite monastery. The nuns fire, combined with the earlier norrbom fire. Its burned about 17,000 acres. Here is a map of the area. As of their last update yesterday evening, this fire is about 3 contained. According to cal fire incident command, this fire and the presley and adobe fires are burning in higher elevations. Containment for all three is in the single digits. Yesterday evening these fires appeared to be threatening homes in the communities of oakville and youngsville. Residents of the youngsville residents home were told to shelter in place. People on highway 29 could see a huge wall of smoke in the distance. Weve had so the begin fire activity on mount veeder for the last several days. Its working down to dry creek. We have numerous houses there and we are attempting to get engines there to protect them. Reporter what you are seeing here is part of the nuns fire. This is in the area, the foothills around mount veeder west of highway 29. North of the oakville grade. You can see the fire coming down into the canyons. There are some homes in this area which is why there is an advisory evacuation issue. That advisory evacuation means have your stuff ready to go in case you have to leave at a moments notice. Have your essential items, medication, pets and clothing. Be ready in case conditions change. Many people are concerned and thinking about the wineries. Not only are they businesses but its a way to bring money into the area to recover. You and i were talking before you went in the field. You heard the vineyards have actually helped the firefighters. Reporter yes. Thats according to the cal fire deputy incident commander. He is also with napa county fire. He was saying in some cases, many cases, when these fires come into the vineyards they stop. You have a lot of dirt plowed fields and they keep the grapes and the vineyards well watered. In many cases its a good thing when they approach, when the fires approach the vineyards. The fire tends to stop and it slows it down. They are well watered and then there is open space, almost a Defensible Space around these vines. Reporter there is no continuous fuel. Thank you for the update. We will check back in throughout the morning. Evacuation centers have been set up in petaluma which has not been affected directly by the fires. Nearly 3000 homes in nearby santa rosa were destroyed by the fire. More than 400,000 square feet of commercial space was lost. Many people need help and petaluma is lending a hand. Even some of us are affected by. We want to do everything we can to help out and keep busy. While petaluma has been lucky so far, officials to recommend people who live there should also be prepared. Pack a bag and make plans just in case. Councils with the u. S. Department of Veterans Affairs have set up a trailer at an Evacuation Center to provide Mental Health services to veterans. Counselors are available at the Evacuation Center at napa valley college. They say the smoke, smell and sight of burned buildings can be stressful for those who have served in war zones. The community routed into Saint Rose Catholic Church to pray for those affect did. Nearby Cardinal Newman high school was partially destroyed in the fire and student say the mass helps the Community Come together. Especially in times like this where its tough to figure out whats going on and why it happened. Especially to good people and a good community. Its nice to be comforted on the spiritual side of things. Student say they are not sure what school will be like or how they will even attend classes moving forward. A santa rosa couple lost their home and thought they lost everything. That is until strangers found some precious photos among the rubble. Susi and fred hulac were forced to evacuate their home on monday. During that time, they managed to take a few things. When the couple returned to their home in coffey park they found it had burned. That is until they got a call from Lauren Bianchi whose home office is 2. 5 miles away from the property. My daughter came across the wedding picture and i got goose bumps and chills. I knew how irreplaceable that is to somebody. This gives hope that there is life. We forgot we had this. Here it is. It gives you joy. When lauren found the photos she posted them on facebook and it was shared 2000 times. It turns out relatives in malaysia saw this. Now they have priceless memories back. Despite the devastation they say they plan to rebuild in santa rosa. Fires are burning in Mendocino County north of you higher and west of Mendocino National forest. They are burned more than 44,000 acres with containment at 10 . Eight people have died while 8000 have been evacuated from the area. The sheriff said the changing wind patterns are his biggest concern right now. Were going 180 degrees from one direction to the other at high rates. 3040 Miles Per Hour. Its very frustrating for both cal fire and the residents and law enforcement. The fire is still burning in multiple directions and threatening 1000 homes. The sheriff said most phone service has been lossmaking communication extremely difficult. In lake county this sulfur fire is 55 contained and has burned 2500 acres off highway 20 in the area of clearlake oaks. The sheriff tells us 3000 evacuees have been allowed back home. The county is working to lift Evacuation Orders in other parts once they are cleaned up and power is restored. In the face of this disaster, people are coming together, donating money, time or both to help neighbors and strangers. And through their pain they are taking comfort with fellow evacuees. We are all thrown together and Everybody Loves everybody. I see so many post on social media about people donating so much stuff. I saw a post this morning where they say the donations are so overwhelming that some food is going bad. I want to start with a look at the fire zone. The major roads and the fire zone are open. Highway 37, 101. You can see as i push in more many of the closures are local. Many of these roads are detoured. Highway 12 between sonoma and santa rosa, you will run into some detours but a lot of it is open since monday. Highway 128 is closed northwest of calistoga and also east of st. Helena. Also in Lake Berryessa. Highway 101 is open but some off ramps are closed in santa rosa and areas affected by the fires. In the Altamont Pass we have traffic that is low on 580 and 205 as you drive through the area. 680, a problem on the sunol grade with that bus accident. Southbound 680 is clearing but its low out of pleasanton. If you have enough time, think about using 580, 238 and 880 south. This is a look at interstate 880 in oakland. Traffic in both directions is moving well. At the bay bridge toll plaza we do have a backup that is about 10 minutes long before you make it onto the span. My good buddy mike takes that route, 680 to san jose. He may not have heard everything you said. Many people take from the east bay. Southbound 680 as you get to andrade road, there was a bus accident for the last hour. Your buddy may need to get out of the house early. There you go, mike. Got it from the man himself. Smoke advisory continues although its not as bad as wednesday and thursday. A little better today but still pretty bad. This is all winddriven. If the wind is northwest it goes more toward the east bay. If it goes north, acres more toward oakland and the south bay. Used, marin county. Smoky skies in napa. 42. This is closer to in town. A high of 76. Atlas peak has a northeast at 8. Humidity at 32 . Temperatures are much cooler and humidity is higher. Cloverdale and geyserville, look at the difference. Wind out of the north with 78 . The other is west, southwest and 87 . Wind direction means everything as far as humidity and temperatures. Geyserville, northwest. 40s and low 50s.
