South as the Silverado Country Club. When im saying that, that line is both high ground and low ground. And i know for a fact there are hundreds of homes up there. And, again, youre still not seeing any [ indiscernible ]. Correct . No, and i cant imagine would that would be, given the level of smoke up above the fire, and the wind right now. It just seems to be smoking. It is getting heavier and heavier with regard to the smoke im breathing right now. Mark, for people not familiar with that area, can you talk about where this fire is, the number of homes in the area, and whether there are businesses, as well . You mentioned the Silverado Country Club. Reporter yeah. So im quite a ways away from celtics Silverado Country Club. But im familiar with the geography, and it appears to be close to that, and there are some very expensive homes up in those hills that look to be jeopardized. Im going to say coloneller is vattively dozens and dozens of conservatively dozens and dozens of homes right now. The wind is picking up. The fire that deeper amber red. That always seems to be just a stronger frame, and just billowing smoke all up and down the valley right now. For those people just joining us, tell us about your brotherinlaw and what he they would you. He lives up in the area near where the fire is. Yeah. Well, my brotherinlaw texted me and said your brotherinlaw has a name, and he lives up there, and he first started noticing this probably little over an hour ago, and realized right away the severity of it, because the people who live up there, theyre aware of the fire danger, much like the people who live in the Oakland Hills. And they dont mess around. If there is any hint or scare of that, they hay tail it out of there, and high tail it out of there, and thats what he did. So many homes up there are kind of spread out. Its not like neighborhoods up there. Its like one of those things i mentioned earlier. I called a friend of mine just on the off chance that he might have noticed it, and he looked out his window and just immediate panic, woke his wife up. They grabbed their dog, and they basically quit talking to me on the phone, and you could just hear a lot of hustle and wonderful, and they got out of there in a and bustle, and they got out of there in a hurry. Just after looking out the window and seeing whats going on. Not one of those things, like, oh, that could spread, its like this thing is alive and moving at a very high rate of speed. Were looking at these live pictures right now, and you can clearly see the top of this hillside burning. And this fire, the flames are really racing along that hillside, and its completely out of control. Reporter yeah, for the viewers who might know the area a little bit, im on big ranch road, which parallel to the silverado trail, and probably three miles away from silverado trail is those hills up above it. And as far as i can see to the north and south, theres bright, bright flames, like almost a string of bright fire moving at what appears to be a high rate of speed rate of speed. You can definitely tell that from the fire on atlas peak. As we look at tebow live pictures, when the photograph ore was able to get a little closer, mark, you could just see the winds really fueling the fire. Yeah. The winds, theyre forecasted to peak, in fact, late tonight, basically right now up until 6 00 or 7 00 tomorrow morning. So its a late sunday night monday morning wind event, and these will be relentless. They will continue to accelerate, especially this portion of the north bay for the hills up above a thousand, up above 1500 feet. You can see the Current Conditions right now. Temperatures in the 60s. The relative humidity very dry, around 16, 17 . The winds gusting to around 25 to 30 miles an hour. But theres not a weather sensor everywhere, and the weather pattern can shift quite a bit, and as a result, those winds could spike up easily. , in fact, the National Weather service putting the high end around 50 to a 55 miles an hour for a few isolated peaks in the bay area. So as i mentioned earlier, its like below drier, a warm, dry wind out there. As you can see, there is atlas peak road, and now backing that out, theres 121. Just to give you some perspective on napa. In f we were to tilt the map right now if we were to tilt the map right now, give you a better idea of the terrain. This reporting site is around 1900 feet. There were all sorts of different valleys up there and the summits, and as a result, the wind kind of channels through the area. This is a north wind, a dry wind direction, and this has been the big concern for fire crews with this wind event. Here are the winds closer to sea level. Look at these gusts. They are focused up in the north bay. Napa, gust to 38. Fairfield, a gust of 40 miles an hour, so just want to spread the word that the likelihood of a fire is really ramping up not only in napa, but the east bay and the suction mountains. Santa cruz mountains. But these winds will not back off at all. In fact, they could strengthen a but in the next few hours. All right, mark, thank you. Bill is a resident of napa county and joins us on the phone. What can you tell us about whats happening where you are, and, first, how close you live to where this fire is . Well, i live on the other side of the valley. So i live on the west side of the valley, about 400 feet above the valley floor, directly across from atlas peak. So im looking at i watched the fire start on atlas peak when my wife woke me up, the fire was well south of atlas peak and down towards Silverado Country Club, and the highlands, and then i watched it erupt and its right at the top of as atlas peak right now. And theres a canyon the west side of the vacas from atlas peak. The smoke is so dense as you look from my vantage point, down towards the silverado connecticut country club, that you cant see as much flame as you originally could see. How the fire jumped from where it was up to atlas peak, i watched it erupt, but i dont know how it did it, because it did it against the wind. Bill, watt would be your biggest concern right now. There are a lot of houses in the path of these flames . Reporter well, yes, soda canyon road has houses all up and dont. Its a rural community, but there are houses and vineyards and what knot all the way up to the top of soda canyon road. Bill, from where you are, are you seeing any firefighters, any crews there, perhaps, trying to get to the fire from a different angle, and trying to tackle it . I dont see have seen flashing lights and what not, and still do on occasion. But i dont theres no nothing in the air. The wind is blowing extremely forcefully. Thats what week my wife up was the wind. We live up on the high end of the mountain with a lot of oak trees around, and the wind was just whipping the trees back and forth, and she looked out the window and said the whole other side of the valley is on fire, and so, but, yes, there are fire crews, you can see flashing lights here and there. No aircraft. Bill, would it be fair to say that the hillside has essentially exploded in flame, skins you started watching it, or would that be too strong. Yes, thats exactly my wife has sent two or three pictures to you, and from atlas peak, all the way down to close to the Silverado High School highlands, the entire ridge line is ablaze. Its beginning to come down the ridge some into soda canyon, but were on the west side of the valley up above highway 29 to the west. Bill, have you received any sort of Emergency Notification about this fire . No, i have not, but i called my daughter, who lives down in Silverado Country Club, and told her she needs to get in her car and come up here where i think its safer than where she is. What did she tell you . Caller she said shes on her way. She wasnt aware, and she looked out of her back windows and said, wow, im coming up here to your house. It just seems like this fire could not have broken out as a worse time. You have nighttime conditions, obviously. Its windy, and how difficult would it for firefighters to get up to where this fire is, by truck . Reporter very difficult. This is steep, hilly terrain with that you dont get too easily. And whats interesting is i went to bed about 9 30, and i closed the drapes in my bedroom, and i looked directly across the valley, when die that, and there was that no flame to be scene, and my wife came up a half hour later, and told me the whole valley, the whole ridgeline across it was on fire. Bill, one of the things about the Oakland Hills firestorm was the roads so were narrow, and you had people trying to evacuate with trucks trying to go up the hill, and there just wasnt enough room for the traffic in both directions. Would that be the case where the fire burning now, or would that be an overstatement to say that . Caller no, that would this would not be dissimilar to that. Soda canyon volunteered a two lane road that goes up and down the canyon, and im sure theres fire vehicles trying to get up there, and im sure there are people trying to get down from there. Obviously when a situation like this happens, and its breaking news, there is a lot of activity via the first responders, and we are hearing that this is burning in the soda canyon area. Bill, thats what you were talking about. Caller yes. It and looks like official notion expecting it to reach silverado flail about 30 minutes. So, bill, silverado trail, describe that area for me. Caller well, im looking at silverado trail. I see a fire vehicle going up silverado trail right now, and if i were to guess, and its very difficult to hazard a guess from this distance, i would say that the fire would appear to me to be, oh, a thousand yards from where i see the fire vehicle on silverado trail right now. Are there a lot of houses along silverado trail . Caller yes. Houses, vineyards, wineries, et cetera. And then how far is Silverado Country Club from what would be your estimation here of how far the flames are from the country club, and does appear, at least from your van damage point, that the country club could potentially be threatened . Caller well, frank, its hard to say, because the smoke is so black. Im looking down now at the direction of where the silverado highlands are, and every now and again, i see a orange a bit spot of orange amongst the black smoke, where i would all is the silverado highlands in addition directly above the Silverado Country Club. Any phone calls or emails from anybody you know who is in the path of the fire . Caller no one other than my daughter, and weve made the call to her and alerted her that the fire was burning, and asked her to evacuate. Bill, how long have you lived in this area, and have you ever seen a fire break out in this particular area of napa county, and how concerned are you about this thing continuing to grow . Caller im very concerned. Ive lived here since 2001, and i was here when the fire was burning right behind i looked just south, and slightly west of the veterans phone, and if you recall in 2006, there was a fire that broke out there, and the fire command post for a while was in the parking lot of the golf course, just east of the at the entrance to the veterans home, and was burning all down back behind us. So im quite concerned, because with this wind the wind conditions tonight, this is going very difficult to get under control with no aircraft available. Bill, stand by for just one second. For people just joining us, we want to recap what is going on here. This is a major fire that is burning right now out of control in napa on atlas peak. It is threatening homes. There have been evacuates as a result of this. The fire, the last estimates from cal fire was it was at 200 acres, but presumably it has gotten even bigger than that. Joining us once again on the phone is bill cover who lives in that area. Bill, just take a moment for us, if you will, and describe how you first saw it, and what youre seeing now. Caller my wife came and woke me up and said the entire [ indiscernible ] across the valley from us is on fire, and i opened the drapes and looked, and about, oh, maybe a mile south of atlas peak, all the way down towards the silverado highlands, there are flames on the ridge line. It looked like they were on the east side of the ridge line and jumped to the west. Ridgeline and jumped to the west. But it doesnt appear to have gone north of atlas peak yet. Well, bill, were glad you are safer, and appreciate you taking the time to talk with us tonight. Also, we hope that your daughter is safe. I know you told us she lives down there by the Silverado Country Club, and that youve told her to evacuate, and presumably shes on her way to your house now. Again, thank you for talking with us tonight. Caller my pleasure. Lets bring in our meteorologist, mark. You hear will and hear him on his phone, and you can hear the wind just howling there, mark. And he talks about the fact that this is, a, breaking out at night, and breaking out at a time when those winds are really, really howling. I will say, im sure fire crews have been briefed on this, because this is exactly what was in the forecast, at least the idea with the thinking of it. Definitely increased the wind speeds by sunday evening, so those winds really ramping up accord together schedule, and unfortunately those will continue to pick up over the next few hours into monday morning, up until about 8 00 or 9 00, maybe 10 00, but over the next 6 to 8 hours, the strong winds will be a factor. Atlas peak peak right now reporting a wind gust of 30 miles an hour, but that is just one sensor. A few areas in this pot could have gusts approaching 50 miles per hour. So this is definitely a dry wind out of the north that always boosts the fire danger. Youve been hearing a lot about these locations up around the napa area. This is the terrain up around 1500, 1900 feet. You can see the rugged mountains here to the north of napa. Well come in closer right now and show you this. This is the says soda canyon road. That wind will push the flames from the north to the south. Thats what you would expect with the fire growth. There is silverado trail. So you get an idea here of the location between soda canyon road and the silverado trail. Ill point it out to you along this line, right about here. There is silverado trail. Just as we back these out and tint them, you can get the idea of the terrain. This introduces another element, because you not only have the wind direction, you have these valleys and the funneling effect, and with that, the wind can accelerate, and that can cause more problems for the fire crews in the short term. Once again, a red flag warning in effect for the north bay, the east bay, and the santa cruz mountains. So fire danger for a good portion of the bay area. These are actually closer to sea level, santa rosa, napa, and fairfield. You can see winds gusting to 29, 38, and 47 miles per hour. And 47 miles per hour, and 41 miles per hour, and these winds could pick up as we go into monday morning. It is turning into a very serious out in here, and with those winds, you dont see them calming down at all tonight. Not at all tonight. And this is a north wind, a dry wind, so no moisture to work with here, so relative humidity will be very low. We always talk about the peak of fire season, october. They had so much rainfall over the winter and then things have dried out, and now things are actually i live unwhere the firestorm was in the Oakland Hills. We moved there after the fire, but as i was driving into work, i thought this feels like one of those nights with the strong winds and the dry, hot conditions. And mark was sort of alluding to that in our earlier shows, talking about the winds, and discussing the red flag warning. And just think about all of those days we had temperatures above 90, 100 degrees, really drying things out. So this is accumulating. Unfortunately we dont the fire cause, but with a almost of these wind events, it could be a downed power line, but we dont have any information yet. This is information coming in from sonoma county, multiple fires are reported around sonoma county, we currently have fires at Mark West Springs and reebly road in santa rosa. Shiloh and candy in windsor, and highway 116. Local Fire Departments are on the scene. They will november if there are any evacuations called for, but obviously they say that the strong winds are really making things difficult for them. And they also say dispatchers are overwhelmed by 911 calls with reports of all of the smoke. So we have those fires in sonoma spent the situation in napa county as well. We are going to continue to work to try to find out more about all of these fires. Stay right with us. Were going to take a short break and be right back. Oh, you brought butch. Yeah butch growls at man hes looking at me right now, isnt he . Yup. butch barks at man butch is like an old soul that just hates my guts. laughs vo you can never have too many faithful companions. This is a very serious situation. Mark joins us, our sports editor, who lives near that area. Mark, what is going on there is now well, i wanted to get closer. You asked with regard to the Silverado Country Club, i drove, for those familiar, atlas peak is the road that Silverado Country Club is on. Theyve got that roadblocked off. There are streams and streams of cars coming out of there, which i can only assume is people evacuating from their homes. Theyre not letting anyone in. The Golf Tournament just wrapped up today. Theres one of those temporary auxilliary parking lots, and there are a number of fire engines in those lots. I can only assume their strategizing as to where to deploy all the engines and put their manpower. But its a chaotic scene here. Youve got massive cars coming out, and other people trying to get in, and probably figure out how bad it is. But i can tell you, the flames are not as low as Silverado Country Club. They seem to be at least a good mile and a half above the country club, but they have evacuated the country club. Mark, were going to have to leave it at that, mark, were going to wrap things up here. Major fire that were covering in napa county, also getting reports of another fire in sonoma county, leading to evacuations. More in the morning. Woman so, greg, its a lot to take in.
