Yes, in oakland, look at that streaks of lightning flashing across the sky. The National Weather service says as of 10 00 last night, about 1,000 cloudtoground lightning strikes were spotted across the bay area. Take a look at the lightning at at t park. Before the giants game with the dodgers last night. And the storm delayed the game, after a few pitches, it was delayed again, and the game finally ended at 2 10 this morning. And we are going to have highlights of the giants 86 victory later on in the newscast. And across San Franciscos skyline, it was lightning last night. It startled a lot of people. It also created a variety of problems. Down near Golden Gate Park, lightning hit a tree around 9 00. That tree fell on to a parked car along 24th and folsom. No one was hurt. But the man who took these pictures said traffic lights were out in the area. And the air smelled like burning smoke. And there were scattered rain showers all throughout the bay area. This is how hard it was raining in the Santa Cruz Mountains around dinnertime. A shelter in place order in san mateo has been lifted. That is after lightning struck a tree and caused a live power line to come down. It happened about 10 00 last night, on east santa ynez avenue and ramona street. People were told to stay inside until pg e crews arrived. The branch that fell was eight to 10 feet long. It looked like it took down the branch and several power lines and laying it on the sidewalk and several cars. Firefighters say they were busy all night responding to multiple calls about lightning strikes and small fires. Pg e crews are also busy this morning after last nights thunderstorms. Right now, about 1800 customers have no power across the bay area. Most of those outages are in San Francisco and on the peninsula. Pg e says the power should be restored though in most areas, a little later this morning, and it may not be restored in San Francisco completely until this afternoon. Time is now 4 04. New video from georgia, showing how dangerous the roads were as Tropical Storm irma hit that area. A big tree, right there, fell in front of the car, pam. The driver slammed on the brakes and the driver still crashed into the tree trunk. You can see the driver getting out. The driver was shaken up but otherwise is okay. Meantime, many in florida who evacuated ahead of the storm, they are going back home. Or at least trying to go back. But the power is still out for more than 5 million people. And some of the areas are still flooding. Reporter Lauren Blanchard has the latest from tampa, florida. Irmas damage across florida certainly could have been worse. But it still is going to take a lot of time for the state to rebuild. Residents across florida taking stock of the carnage. We got really hit really hard. We got lots of wind everywhere. A lot of broken trees. Irma is still soaking parts of the southeast, while the Sunshine State begins the clean jun. There is no telling how long the flooding will last in places like jacksonville, or hundreds of miles away near fort myers, where the waters are still rising. It is just flooding. It just wont stop. It keeps coming up. Farther south in the florida keys, residents trying to get back home, clashed with police, after being denied reentry into their neighborhoods. Right now we dont know where to go. They issued us these hurricane passes, and we put all of our faith in these hurricane passes and these hurricane passes are worthless if we cant get in. And homeowners in miami ran into the same problem monday. Turned away. Despite waiting for hours. Officials say they need to keep the streets clear. To work on restoring power to the millions of floridaians without electricity. We dont want people driving around, running into tree, god forbid power line, gas leaks. Many of the homeowners will be allowed back in their houses today. Miami and orlando airports planning to reopen with limited service. In tampa, Lauren Blanchard, fox news. Well, as lauren just said, some of floridas major airports are reopening this morning. Fort Lauderdale Hollywood international airport, this is what it was like a little while ago. It may take weeks before the flight schedule gets back to normal at fort lauderdale, miami and orlando airports. Miamis airport sustained water damage at some of its terminals. We have heard about distracted driving of course. But now there is concern about pedestrians who focus on their cell phones instead of paying attention. Especially when crossing the street. A San Mateo County supervisor today will introduce a measure to state legislator, proposing to ban people from looking down at their phones while in a cross walk. And early expectation, a new high end up wards of 1,000 for the 10th anniversary of the iphone. The higher end one could have a 5. 8inch screen, and it could be edge to edge glass with no bezel so you will get a lot of screen real estate. It may have a camera that validates your identity, so you dont have to use a fingerprint or pin. And another iphone 8 is expected to be announced at a lower price point. I kind of wanted the iphone 8. Im waiting are for the wireless charge and catching up with samsung. And at the store in San Francisco, customers fill the aisles and other products that could be introduced is the upgraded apple watch and apple tv. This man bought an iphone 7 and was intrigued by the talk of an iphone x. I am waiting for it. And always at stake for apple is the competition is not sitting still. Samsung came out with a great phone and google is coming out with a great phone and they cant rest on their laurels. I think apple needs to make better inroads on the lower price models. As excited as we are for this 1,000, 1200 iphone, that is not going to sell to the millions of people buying phones. At ground zero, the families of those killed on september 11th marked the 16th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. President trump and the first lady observed a moment of silence at the white house. The president also attended a wreathlaying ceremony at the pentagon. The living breathing soul of america wept with grief for every life taken on that day. The september 11th attack, al qaeda hijackers, remains the deadliest attack on u. S. Soil taking the lives of almost 3,000 people. There was also a remembrance ceremony yesterday in shanksville, pennsylvania, where United Airlines flight 93 crashed in the field. Todd m. Beamer. bell ringing brook [. Vice president mike pence attended that ceremony honoring the 40 passengers and four crew members of flight headed from newark to San Francisco. The hijackers steered that plane toward washington, d. C. But passengers fought to regain control of the plane causing it to crash in a rural pennsylvania area, killing everyone on board. Many of those on board the plane were from the bay area. Or had ties here, including one of the pilots who grew up in san jose. Time is 4 15. Mark bingham of los gatos was one of the passengers who stormed the cockpit on flight 93, keeping that hijacked plane from reaching washington, d. C. September 11th, ironically, was also his birthday. We have turned 47 yesterday. Last night, flowers were left outside of his mothers home in los gatos. Alice hogland says she is touched to know that people still think of her and inspired by her sons story. Im so grateful to him for touching so many lives and for being alert and alive and willing to fight and help on that very last day of his life. During the hijacking, mark bingham called his mother from that plane, just before flight 93 crashed. And told her he loved her. Bingham was gay and Alice Hogland says she is now focused on fighting for lgbt rights. As part of the tribute to her son. And his legacy. People gathered in san rafael last night, as well, to remember another passenger from flight 93. Lauren grancolis was 38 and three months pregnant and called her husband from the plane to tell him how much she loved him. Zac was touched to know that others had not forgotten about his late wife and 16 years later he is filled with memories about her and thoughts of their unborn child. And it was someone that was going to be, so when i see kids around the ages of 15, i cant help but thinking. The city of san rafael dedicated a garden in memory of lauren, right downtown, on fourth street. Which was one of her favorite spots. Time is 4 16. Happening today, the San Francisco board of supervisors will examine a plan by California Pacific Medical Center to close to units at Saint Lukes Hospital in the mission district. Administrators want to close the Skilled Nursing and short term rehab units by the end of october. The union that represents hospital workers as closing will affect 44 patients and 72 employees. The california pacific, which merged with saint lukes, says its building two new facilities that will help replace what is being closed. The union says patients who are displaced by the move may have to look out of the bay area to find a similar facility. Right now, it is 4 17. Raising questions about potential safety problems. A fire alarm accidentally went off sunday, at the airport, and some people say they could not get out through the emergency exit doors. A spokesperson for the airport says newlyinstalled exit doors in terminal b locked down during the alarm, which they are designed to do in an emergency. They say there were many other emergency exit doors that were working, but some people say they were confused and there wasnt enough direction about where to go. The airport now plans to change its emergency policy. It is anxietyinducing. I wouldnt like that at all. If youre stuck in a direction and trying to unhinge yourself from it. We have determined there is another set of information, signage, what have you, that we need to convey to customers in the event of an emergency in terminal b.
