The lightning lit up the sky over the Santa Cruz Mountains this afternoon in the midst of a thunderstorm. Striking the top of a chimney. These are pictures from central county fire which serves millbrae hillsborough. It looks like a fence was also damaged. Lightning made a large cypress tree look like candling near half moon bay. This was taken by peter finch on pearl avenue and posted on facebook. No one was hurt. Lightning stretched across the skyline along with rain. The weather has caused a delay for the giants game. Only one player made its too bad before the tarps were brought out. So far the game has not been called. We saw scattered showers and other parts of the bay area. This downpour around dinnertime in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Delays at sfo to the weather. A live picture of the airport. There have been ground stops during the evening and more than one dozen flights were diverted and told to fly around until the weather cleared for landing. Bill martin is in the weather center. Unusual weather for the bay area. We knew this was coming last week. When you get this kind of moisture this far north this time of year you will have a chance for thundershowers. If you keep watching this camera ive been watching it the last 20 minutes. It has been popping. Out in Golden Gate Park there is a big part. There is the tape right there from earlier. I think it is more compelling. Im watching big strikes to the north. We saw a big hit at point bonita. You see some flashes in the background. We just had a big pot a minute ago. Lets stay on that for a minute. A lot of lightning strikes. Reports of nearly 1000 strikes in the bay area. Heres how the showers look. Most of them pointed to the north. This area is producing the most thundershowers activity. It is moving towards the north and the west. Lets put it into motion. This is pretty high base. It is interesting that we dont see a lot of cloud to ground lightning. We are not seeing a ton of rain. We are getting some rain. Most of the showers are drying up. Areas in concorde. Thunderstorms stay in the forecast as we go into tonight. Youre looking at a live picture if you are at ocean beach ocean beach or half moon bay. I take this live picture you know it wont pop for us. We did moments ago see a couple big flashes. Thunder and lightning. You will hear it again. We are back in a similar forecast. A fallen a fallen pinetree narrowly missed landing on the carpet it crashed onto a roadway. A camera was rolling. The driver of the white suv ended up crashing into the tree trunk sending the back of the vehicle into the air nearly 45 degrees. The driver was shaken. But otherwise okay. The florida keys were especially hard hit by Hurricane Irma. Workers are trying to reopen the one highway that connects the island to the mainland. A flyover revealed scenes of devastation. We have downed power lines across the state. We have roads that are impassable. We have debris all over the state. Reporter with it moving north the storm has been causing flooding in places like georgia and south carolina. Monday jacksonville experience storm surge that led to historic flooding. Jacksonville is suffering some of the worst flooding it has seen in 100 years. Reporter it blasted the entire 400 mile length of florida including communities on both coasts. There is more damage than i expected based on the trajectory of the storm. Reporter with so much 1 water entry damage analyst say insured property losses could easily run up to 40 billion in florida alone. The florida keys were hit hard by a irma with large numbers of homes destroyed and water sewers and electricity knocked out. The u. S. Navy is sending ships to help with search and rescue. My heart goes out to the people in the keys. There is devastation. I just hope everybody survived. It is horrible what we saw. Reporter what is left is now expected to move to the northwest. Back here in miami. Schools remain closed the airport will open tomorrow for limited flights. Two major airports in florida will reopen tomorrow. The Orlando Airport will resume limited service. Miami international is also expected to resume operations. Tomorrow. Airlines have been flying empty planes to nearby Fort Lauderdale so they can resume operations. The hurricane caused the cancellation of 9000 flights since saturday. Today at ground zero the families of those killed on september 11 marked the 16th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. The attack on the twin towers and the pentagon by hijackers remained the deadliest attack ever on u. S. Soil. Taken the lives of almost 3000. United Airlines Flight 93 was heading to San Francisco. Including one of the pilots grew up in san jose. Among the heroes united flight 93 was of san rafael. She was 38. Three months pregnant and she called her husband during the flight to tell him how much she loved him. Knowing she would never see him again. We caught up with her husband jack tonight. There are three guys on board. Reporter they were terrorists who hijacked the plane. A6 for rugby player gathered other passengers to retake the plane. They crashed in a field in pennsylvania. It was later revealed the intended target might have been the u. S. Capitol building. It was such a horrible day. And now i look back on it and i see all the good that has been done. At this point. Here is how it looks right now. Most of the heavy stuff is through the area. We could see more tonight. Some more lightning and Thunder Showers again tomorrow and wednesday. Today will be the most active day. There is a low pressures system offshore. It is in such a position it is allowing moisture to come up in our area. Right around point reyes. That is what went through the bay area. You can see the movement. Scattered light showers around the area right now. I want to back this up again to put this into motion.
