Storm. But we are just a few hours from the big time rains. Youre right. Giving you a live look at key west where the rain bands are already moving over florida and the winds are beginning to pick up. It is skirting right loopg the coast along the coast line of cuba. It has weakened a little bit with winds sustained at 130 miles an hour with a westerly movement at about 12 miles an hour. Over the next 24 hours as it gets back over the warm ocean water, it is expected to intensify once again. We are looking at a bunch of adviseries in place. Here is a look at the path. It shifted a little east and then is was right smack along the straight of the peninsula and now it is a little west. Now the models indicate it will be on the west edge of florida as it moves ashore. As far as the timing on this, hopefully it will not gain much strength but it is expected to come on shore as a category 4 as early at 2 tomorrow morning. It could be delaid by just a little bit and it will workets way up to the peninsula and making it to georgia by early monday. As far as the wind expected, all destructive with a storm surge up to 12 feet with maybe even a little more on the east edge of the peninsula. Isolated rain, 10 to 20 inches. If you are not getting the storm surge, you will still get the heavy rainfall and the winds could be life threatening. A huge concern. It is so scary. You feel this impending motion of it being bad and there is nothing you can do. And so big, it is like 600 miles across. It covers the entire peninsula. It doesnt matter where you are, you will be hit one way or the other. Thanks. Lets talk about miami beach, practically a ghost town. Food and water being hard to find and shelters are being set up for those who could not get out in time. We have the latest from orlando. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Behind me is a gas station where they do still have fuel. Folks have been coming through in the morning, those that are still here, people are trying to fill up their gas tanks before they head out of town or hunker down. Millions have been ordered to evacuate florida. It is the largest evacuation in state history. It was a miracle that we got on this flight. Reporter the last commercial flights out of florida have departed. Some have been stranded, being directed to emergency storm shelters. The cops were like all the flights are canceled and i was ready to cry. Reporter many shelters are filling up in florida. I always lived in a high zone but it is okay. You just deal with it. Reporter 5. 6 Million People, 25 of floridas population has been ordered to evacuate. Highways have been backed up heading north. Overnight, a number of drivers hit the road, taking advantage of fewer travelers while many were sleeping. With irma moving closer, staple items like food and gasoline are becoming hard to come by. Hurricane irma regained category 5 strength. At this point after blasting cuba and causing death and casstrophic drukz destruction across caribbean, it is headed for the florida keys. There is still the potential for Hurricane Force winds on the east coast. Reporter irma could bring a storm urge up to 12 feet in some areas of this state. And officials are warning some 9 Million People could lose power for weeks. And listening to the governor within the last half hour, you could hear the urgency in his voice when he was telling people to get out, your life matters and we will try to help you. Are you getting a sense of that time is running out and people are trying to pick up what they can in the last day or so. Reporter even it shows you the difference between yesterday. A lot of these gas stations had lines around the block and today not that many people out and about getting fuel. The ones we have talked to said they were planning to stay. One woman said she was going to stay so she could volunteer at a shelter. Many are drying to get themselves out of this area because they are not certain where they will find fuel yet. Orlando is a very big Tourist Destination and it is just very quiet here. A lot of people i suspect are heading up to orlando and then people in orlando heading to jacksonville, is the whole state a ghost town. Reporter yeah. So in south florida, a lot of towns we are hearing are ghost towns. And tampa and orlando people are moving more north. Up in jacksonville thats where we were driving by and that over there, the northbound lanes were bumper to bumper traffic. People were trying to get out of the state away from the storm track which obviously keeps changing and moving west at this point so folks are just trying to get out of the way of this pact. Are you hearing the stories of people who wont leave . The people that the government seemed to address and the people who are stubborn, thinking they can ride it out. Reporter yeah. I have heard from a number of my friends who say they have parents or grand parents in the area who say they are going to ride it out. And believe it or not a lot of the kids who dont live there are very worried about their parents and grand parents there. So hopefully, those who decide to stay, especially along the western coast are very well prepared. Because as the governor said, this will hit hard and there could be a number of days before emergency crews are able to get in or bring water or get you out if it becomes necessary. It will be tough to call 911 in the next few days. All right, live in orlando, thank you. Stay safe out there. Some people in the bay area were in florida on vacation and had to fly right back home. We wanted to give you some live pictures where 19 flights in from florida have been canceled. We expect a lot more cancellations across the country. And we talked to some people who just landed at sfo from florida last night. People are just scrambling to find a place to go. Reporter many welcomed the calm of sfo after the chaos they left. There are huge lines at the gas stations and going to the airport was a nightmare. Reporter this man shot video of rain and wind, already hitting as he road to the airport. The hotel i stayed in, it was a nice hotel and when i checked out it was empty but then it was filling up with everybody. Once we have tropical winds, we send everyone away. Reporter and parking garages are full and facilities are at risk of damage and people who will be stuck at the airport, inevitabley. We have buses to show them to shelters. We have shelters in the area to accommodate people. Last count, they had 900 spaces available. I have the river on one side and the session on the other. Reporter relatives have boarded up the house for this woman. My family says they are not going. You can board up but the river is going to rise and we will all have flooding. The hurricane hit us at the wrong possible time and we had to leave two days early. Reporter this freem mont couple loved their Beach Front Hotel until it was evacuated. They wend to orlando, flight canceled. And then went to tampa and they were able to get out. We had to. If we were stuck, lord knows what would have happened. Lets just get home. This is no joke. Reporter exhausted after 11 hours of travel but their thoughts are with their florida friends and the challenges they face. People were boarding up windows and one guy said a guy quoted him 150 to board up his windows and then the day he came, it was 500. And now the death toll from the earth quake in mexico now stands at 61 and counting. Thousands of homes and buildings have been flattened by one of the most powerful earth quakes ever to hit the country. This is the city of pufrn ton. 36 people died here and a third of the citys homes were damaged across the southwestern portion of mexico. People are still looking through the rubbal for survivors. And we are always in danger of experiencing a major earth quake here in the bay area and as we watch the devastation of that, we are asking our selves, all we doing enough to prepare. And we are at a Disaster Preparedness event with some tips on this saturday morning. Chrisy, good morning. Reporter good morning. Certainly, our hearts are with those in florida and our hearts are with those in mexico. As you said, this is a time for us to reflect on what we are doing here, locally to be prepared for a major disaster. Remember, the bay area is dow for a major earth quake. There are also dangers from fire and dangers that could affect us here in the bay area. So there is a Disaster Preparedness event. And i have someone from the Sheriffs Office to join me here. Lets talk about the event. It is open to the public and you are encouraging people to come to figure out how to prepare for a disaster. This is part of our 2017 urban shield. This is paramount to us. This event is designed for the community to come out and prepare. You dont want to wait until the earth quake happens. We will have the sim yarlt out here. And the Fire Department will simulate a smoke inhielation and we will go over how to get out. We will have the red cross here to simulate how to put together an emergency kit. So there will be a number of public agencies to help you prepare and make it through an emergency. Reporter thank you and you will guide us through some things in the morning and we will join you a little later. The important thing is to make that people are aware of the preparedness before the disaster strikes. And later on this morning, we will be showing you what is inside these emergency kits. And you heard her talk about the big shaker that will simulate an earth quake. And across the parking lot, there is a home where we will be entering that which will simulate what it is like in a fire. The critical element here is understanding that these disasters could impact your life and to be prepared for them before they strike because once they strike, it is often too late. I am looking forward to that. I was doing a check list of the things i have and there are some things lacking so i look forward to that information. Reporter looking at that box myself, i was thinking, yeah, i forgot tooth paste. There are always Little Things that you can tweak what you have. That is one of the reasons we will go through the Emergency Preparedness kit and make sure you have the essentials and some other things like tooth paste which a maybe not an essential but something you should pack away if you can. An ounce of prevention beats a pound of cure any day of the week. We will check in with you later, thanks. Former president , bill clinton, is in the area to honor a local civil rights leader. Of course, we are watching Hurricane Irma and it is just so scary to see it proch and no that there are so many people in its pact that hopefully have gotten to the safest place they can. This is a please of south beach and nobody is there. Thankfully. Hopefully, everyone is taking heed of the warning. This is a massive storm that we have talked about for days. It looks lightning in 24 hours, it will be moving ashore. There is another view where yuk see the winds are beginning to pick up. The outer bands of the storm are already making its way on shore. Here is a look at where irma is right now. You can see it is skirting cuba as a category 4 with winds at 130 miles an hour. So it has weakened a little bit and thats what happens when it comes to shore. The friction helps it to weaken. But it is expected to grain strength again as it moves across the ocean. This is the latest projection. It looks like it will move along the west end of the peninsula. It could still shift. We still have plenty of time but thats what it looks like at the moment. We have been talking about how massive this storm is. Look at this frul one end to the other is 600 miles which is way larger than the entire peninsula of florida so every one will get hit. We broke this storm into four quaderants and even if it moves on shore on the west edge and brings the winds with it, we are looking at the storm surge that will hit on the eastern edge of the peninsula. Here is a look at the track. It is still going to make a move and be right there about sunday morning, maybe a little bit later. This is the path and it makes its way up the peninsula and it will be entering georgia monday. We will be tracking it every day of course. Here, our temperatures will heat up as we get into the weekend. Today is warmer than yesterday and sunday looks to be the warmest day. It is 64 in oakland and 61 in San Francisco and a lot of cloud cover all the way inland but it will pull back and we will be sunny for the afternoon. I will have a lock at the afternoon highs and the extended forecast which happens to have the possibility of rain in it. We will be on it coming up. Thank you. The governor of florida is telling everyone in the path of Hurricane Irma to get out now. We dont have a lot of time. The rain and dangerous winds are already moving into the state. The National Weather service says there will be no place safe in the keys when the storm hits. More than 5. 5 people ordered to evacuate, the largest in floridas history. That storm has weakened to a category 4 but it is expected to pick up strength. Many hospitals in florida have closed and things like food, water and gas are becoming harder to find. The Florida Governor, rick scott, said anyone who stays behind will have to do so at their own risk. Just remember this, once the storm starts, Law Enforcement cannot save you. I am a dad and a grand father. I love my family more than anything. I cannot imagine life without them. Do not put your life or your familys life at risk. Governor scott says 25,000 people in the state have already lost power this morning. He is warning anyone who wants to ride this storm out that the storm surges could be up to 12 peat kw could cover peoples homes. He is telling people to leave by noon but after that, it will be too dangerous for people on the road. Shelters have been set up in every county for people who cannot get out. And the air force is ready to respond when it hits. One is already in the disaster zone in the caribbean. They are working to assess what is most needed on the ground to help the island nation ravaged by Hurricane Irma. They have dozens of patients visible tr transport and they have more on stand by. And a group of military veterans is making sure no one is forgotten. This group went to the national cemeteryy daex cemetery and bagged up things from the military head stones to keep them from being lost in the storms. Well, all the attention is focussed on Hurricane Irma, the houston area is slowly recovering from harvey. President trump signed a bill yesterday providing more than 15 billion in emergency funding for victims of harvey. The bill also extends americas barrowing authority and extends the government. The bill will provide much needed support for storm survivors. Officials in texas attribute at least 70 deaths to harvey. Several tv networks are teaming up for Hurricane Relief with a telethon. It will be next tuesday at 8 a. M. It will feature several musicians and George Clooney and others. Here in the bay area, it is earth kwags that we quakes that we need to be prepared for. And we are in Castro Valley to see what a big quake really feels like. Christian. Reporter really, what they want is to make sure you are prepared for. We are inside the big shaker and we are going to see an earth quake now that is similar in magnitude of what struck in mexico. What should we be looking for . You will see a lot of rolling motion and you have to make sure you are prepared. That earth quake is going to cause a lot of damage. You want to make sure you drop, cover and hold on. That is the main thing. Drop, cover and hold on. You want to get under something. And make sure that you cover your head. That is the most important part. That can be devastating. And you can see how violently the ground moves. And it is good, corey is outside and caught us unaware which is good because there needs to be that moment where you know it is happening. But at this moment, we want to do the proper thing and get down low. So whenever you are ready. You get low and grab something and get under something sturdy and cover your head. Very important. And then there will be some after shocks there. You had that advice of get down, drop and cover the back of your head and neck if you can. So if you are at work, get under a work station, a table, you really want to avoid anything that is heavy falling on top of you. The Fire Department is going to hospital. They want to make sure you all take care of yourselves and have your own emergency kits. That will be very important. The first three days are very crucial in case of an earth quake. Reporter you heard him talk about the emergency kit and coming up in the next half hour, we will show you what you need to have in your Disaster Preparedness kit and you need to be prepared to be on your own for at least three days. In some cases, that could be a week or more. We will go through this box here, one of the Disaster Preparedness kits here so you get a sense of whether your kit is up to snuff. I think christian, there is nothing like that feeling when that shock hurts. And i was woken up by the napa earth quake. If you felt it, it is so jarring. There is a sense of you cannot do anything and you are holding on for dear life. It is really something. Reporter and thats why it was key that corey who was operating the shaker took us by surprise because thats the way it is in a real moment. And once the quake is over, you ask be thinking about what you need and we will go over that coming up next. We look forward to your next event. Earlier in the week, it looked like it might move along the eastern edge and now it looks like it will come ashore on the western edge, but it doesnt matter. Either you will get the wind or the storm surge or the heavy rain. This storm is so incredibly wide. It is about 600 miles there. We were saying how florida is only about 160 miles wide. Yeah, for the peninsula. And we tend to watch, if you cut this storm into four sections, it is the northeast edge that really gets hit hard and that is the edge that will move in the areas like miami and we have been worried about the florida keys that are only 3 to 5 feet above sea level. As far as the path, this is what we are looking at for the moment. It looks like it will come ashore as a category four tomorrow morning. Some projections are 2 a. M. Or 8 a. M. And it is really hard to dial that in. As it moved up, it will begin to weaken and move into georgia. How fast is it moving . West at about 15 miles an hour. So it is not as fast as harvey. You could run faster than harvey was moving as it pommelled houston the entire weekend. But it is still going to be catastrophic. And the governor said if you are not in your car within an hour, you have to stay put. This is the last hour of everyone getting out. And then the storm will move faster than you and you cannot escape it. The airports and hospitals are shut down. It is very scary. I saw a lifeguard earlier, i think they were checking the last few minutes. It is scary because you know it is coming and there is nothing you can do about it. You just have to wait it out. It is a deceiving picture there. Calm before the storm. Thank you for that. The governor of florida is warning anyone in irmas path to evacuate by noon or stay put. And the storm is changing into a category 3 but it is expected to go back over the water and pick up strength. Rain and dangerous winds are already moving into the state. Shelters have been set up for those who stayed behind. The governor said 25,000 people in the state have already lost power. They are already feeling this. We have more from florida. A miracle recollect thats how we ended up on this flight. It was absolutely a miracle. Reporter the last commercial flights have departed, leaving some people stranded, being directed to emergency storm shelter locations. The cops were like all the flights are canceled. And im ready to cry. Reporter many shelters are filling up across florida. First time for an evacuation, i always lived in a high zone but it is oak. You just deal with it. Reporter 25 of floridas population has been ordered to evacuate. Amid the exodus, highways have been backed up. Overnight, a number of drivers hit the road to take advantage of fewer travelers. And all flights have been suspended ahead of the storm. And now to the damage and casualties from the 8. 1 earth quake that hit southwest mexico. The death toll stands at 61. Thousands of buildings and homes have been flattened by one of the most powerful earth quakes to hit that country. We spoke with some bay area families worried about their relatives in mexico. Cousins, relatives, uncles and aunts. He wanted to call his family members and see how they were doing. Reporter the mexican president , nieto is still assessing the damage. We have received now reports of loss of life and damage we cannot quantify. We will do that in the coming hours and days to learn what damage the earth quake has caused. Reporter the Mexican Consulate is helping those in the bay area get in touch with people in the area affected. The communication went down and we are trying to communicate with them. So how well prepared are you in case of an earth quake in the bay area . We are joined live from a Disaster Preparedness event. Christian. Reporter we are here at Three Crosses church at this event. They are encouraging peep m to people to come out. It is a reminder that the time to prepare is before the strikes. They are starting to bring in a lot of displays and information for people today so that they know what to do when the earth quake strikes. We talked with people early this morning. And the most important thing is once the earth quake strikes, it is soo late so we actually have some video of doing the simulating earth quake. And you could see the surprise on my face. When it strikes, it is too late. You need to have your earth quake kit beforehand. This is an Emergency Preparedness kit and it is available through the Homeland Security emergency services. And you want to make sure you have a radio that is a crank radio or that operates on batteries and you also want to make sure you have batteries. Reporter i have one like these and you can charge your cell phone with it. What else . You want to have first aid supplies. A first aid book that will guide you through how to use a tourniquet. And if you cannot afford that, you can use cloth, tear up old materials into long strips so that you can have a tourniquet. You want to have quash cloths wash cloths and nonparishable goods, nuts, canned goods. Make sure your canned goods you have your canned goods. Reporter it is important to do it beforehand. You need to do this beforehand because these are things that we will not be able to think about during a crisis. Reporter and see a hammer and a tarp as well. Absolutely. In the eventhat there is water damage, you want to be able to cover up things to keep them from becoming wet and ruined. This hammer will be able to help you work your way through dry wall if you are stuck inside. Reporter each time i look in this box, i realize there is Something Else i have forgotten. I didnt think to put gloves in there. And that is absolutely why we prepare beforehand. In an emergency, your mind will be so focussed on life safety that you will not bow able to thipg about the think about the Little Things you need. Reporter and where can people go to get this information about what to put it in . You can go to allegheny website and you can get information from our office of Homeland Security and office of emergency services. Our director of communication is paul hess. If you have any questions yoshgs geto p hess. Org. Reporter and the key here is to do your thinking about the disaster before it strikes. Coming up in a half hour, we will see if we can go inside to see what a simulating burning home looks like. One of the dangers is the house fires in an earth quake. So we will talk about how to get yourself out alive. And our thoughts and prayers are with those in florida and texas, and mexico. If there is any good to come from it, it is that we can see the disasters coming and we can prepare so that when disaster strikes in california, we are prepared. And where do you keep all of this . You have this big box of stuff. Is it in a car or where do you get access to it. Reporter you want it to be accessible. Lets talk with ty. Where with do you want to keep it . I keep my close to the door. But where would you recommend . You want it in a safe, dry, cool place so that you dont experience any water damage. You want to make sure it is accessible in an emergency. You dont want to try to fegure out where it is. Something else that you want to keep in there is Important Documents. Things that you will need with you, maybe a copies of dushth certificate birth certificates or things like that. So make sure you keep the Important Documents in there and you dont want any water damage to those. Reporter a lot of good advice there. Some place that is accessible and safe. Personally, i keep mine close to my front door in my living room so if i do have to get out quickly i can get out. But if im in my home i know where it is. And we have a lamp here. So be sure you have a Battery Powered lamp as well. Thanks so much and we will check back with you in a little bit. The university of california is suing the Trump Administration following the decision to end the daca program. And former president bill clinton honors a civil rights leader. You are the embodiment of San Franciscos open door and californias open door. When we return, the star studded tribute for a man who has devoted his life to making a difference in the community, stay with us. Some high powered political leaders honored the reverend amos brown for his 40 years of surface in San Francisco. Do you want to know high im here . He was for me when only my mother thought i could win. Clinton was among those paying tribute to the reverend brown of the First Baptist church. He said he was honored that somany people took the time out of their busy lives to attend the event. They will be about pulling people together in love, decency, respect, and common goals for the good of all human kind. And the governor, jerry brown, ended a trip to russia early to pay tribute to him. Hurricane irma has been down graded to a category 3 storm, but still very dangerous and it is expected to get stronger again as it gets closer to florida. Over 5 Million People ordered to evacuate people. At least 51,000 people are hunkering down. We are joined live in orlando with the very latest in florida. Laura. Reporter people need to be paying attention to local authorities. If you are told to evacuate, you should. The window of opportunity is closing. The governor is saying people should leave by noon, about 45 minutes from now , local time. They should leave by noon or else they need to stay where they are and do not get on the roads. Because if they do and this thing hits while they are driving, it could be very darmgs dangerous. Folks are hunkering down. Yesterday, gas stations had lines and lines of cars for people trying to fill up their tanks and gas cans. Today it is a little slower. We have seen some people filling up last minute. Folks here are getting ready as the storm gets closer and we expect it to hit here about 24 hours. It is so scary to watch it from where we are and just all we can see are the images coming towards you. What is the mood of the people who are still there and hunkering down . What are you hearing from them. Reporter a lot of people are just in the final preparation mode. We saw families getting ice, they were hurried, in and out and back in the car and on the road. We talked to one woman hoosaid she was from california and she said she was going to stay because she plans to volunteer at the shelters. Everybody is just telling everyone to stay safe. At this point, people who are left know they are among those who stay and hunker down and wishing everybody luck. And here in orlando, we are not too worried about the storm urge, but we are worried about the wind and all the rain. Florida residents have seen a lot of hurricanes but do you get the sense when the governor said this is the real deal, that they are taking that advice. Reporter well, just looking at the highway yesterday, bumper to bumper traffic northbound. If that is any sort of indication of how serious people are taking that, it would be a good sign. That means that people are really leaving. In south florida, our tox team is telling us that it is a ghost town. People are really listening and evacuating or getting to shelters. Folks seem to be littening and listening and of course, we have seen a lot of people out on the roads with trailers or their back seats full of bags and baggage. People seem to be listening and if they have decided to stay, they are planning to hunker down and wait this thing out for a couple of days. We will hope for the best and you stay safe as well. We appreciate the live report from florida. You know, we were talking about the situation with the hospitals being closed and really, she is north of the keys and there is only a few people that are there. It is scary. It is a scary situation. It will make land fall and it is so big. 6 miles across, twice the size of florida. For days now we have been throwing out statistics and there was something i read yesterday. The last category 5 to hit the u. S. Was andrew. And 250,000 people were left homeless and 55 people were killed. I saw one statistic, after it reaches florida, over 120 billion in damages. In the United States alone. Not mentioning what has happened in the caribbean. And that is what we are asking, how much damage and will it be as bad as it is looking to be. And not moving as slow as harvey but with the winds and the storm surge, they are looking at major devstration for devastation for florida. If you are not hit be the storm surge, you will be hit by the winds. We will give you a lock at where the winds are picking up. You can see they are not that bad yet but this is just the beginning. The outer bands are moving ashore and it is going to detearerate this afternoon and then we are likely to see what is going on oz it moves ashore. That is a pretty view. That is kind of nice there, but that is definitely chafging as we speak. We will continue to track irma. Here at home, we are covered in gray skies and starting out a little cool to mild. Tht afternoon, we warm up. If you like it hot, inland areas will reach 100 by the end of the weekend. Here is a view of the winds at 16 miles an hour, so it is weak but still there. The system that is going to bring us the possibility of a little bit of rain is going to move south, just a little bit. And it will allow the High Pressure to build in for the coming days. That will bring us morning clouds, afternoon sunshine and hot temperatures. Sunday will be the warmest day before the low comes back into play with a cool down and a little bit of wet weather. Right now, it is 63 in livermore and low 60s in San Francisco. And north bay is starting out at 62. The inner east bay is at 63. And laugh yet is at lafayette is at 61. And areas like santa rosa will go to 89. And it is a warm day at 93 for livermore. And low 80s expected in san jose. And 69 by the water in pacifica. The extended forecast here has temperatures continuing to climb and peek on sunday when we get to near 100 degrees for inland cities and 80s around the bay. A big switch for monday and tuesday, cooler with a chance for rain coming our way. Very similar to what we had on thursday, drizzle and light rain. We will be right back. I love you, couch. You give us comfort. And we give you bare feet, backsweat, and gordos. Everything. I love you, but sometimes you stink. Soft surfaces trap odors. Febreze fabric refresher cleans them away for good. Welcome back on this saturday. We have a live look at miamis south beach where all is calm right now. Some of the bands of rain from Hurricane Irma are starting to hit the south keys as people head north. We are expecting a big hit late tonight early tomorrow morning. Welcome back. Lets get right to rosemary who is watching the storm. The live picture is deceiving as it is so calm before a very different picture down there. Yes. And it is still on track to hit florida as early as tomorrow morning. And there are even a few people Walking Around that beach. Youre right. There is a guy jogging there. It will get worse over the next new hours few hours. There is the wind picking up, blowing the palm trees around. We are talking about debris and coconuts flying. It is going to get crazy in the next 24 hours. And the storm has weakened to a category 3. It is moving west at about 9 miles an hour. It will begin to move north in the coming hours snflt right now, the sustained winds are at 125 miles an hour. It moved on shore in cuba in the overnight hours. It needs the warm water to keep it strong. It has weakened some with the friction from the land. But as it moves back to the water which is at 80 and 90 degrees, it is expected to move on to florida as a category 4. You can see all the models are keeping it on the west side of florida. Thats where the strongest winds will be but we are still looking at the storm surge being on the east side of florida. So the entire peninsula is going to get hit, it just depends on what part of the storm you will have to deal with. The northeastern quaderant is where we typically see the strongest storm surge and some of the heaviest damage. Even though it is going to move ashore, doesnt mean the other side is not going to be hit. The storm surge is expected to be 12 feet. And the florida keys are only 3 to 5 feet above water. So they could be totally covered in water. Rainfall amounts from 10 to 20enches. Some of the projections so it coming a little bit early or later. And this one is showing it as a category 4 and then a category 3 as demoves closer to georgia. We will continue to cover this and have more coming up with your local forecast. And with Hurricane Harvey we talked about the 20 inches of rain overnight which is our total years rainfall and now it is happening again plus the surge. Yeah. It is going to be massive. All right. Well the governor of florida is telling everyone in the pact of Hurricane Irma to get out today by noon time. So that is 27 minutes on the clock. It has been down graded to a category three storm. It is still very dangerous and as it continues over the water, it is expected to strengthen again. The Florida Governor talked this morning and said 25,000 people in the state have already lost power and he is warning anyone who wants to ride the storm out that they have to keep the numbers in mind. Surges up to 12 feet could cover peoples homes and it is going to be too daerjs for people to be on the road at any time after noon, florida time. Just remember this. Once the storm starts, Law Enforcement cannot save you. I am a dad and a grand father. I love my family more than anything. I cannot imagine life without them. Do not put your life or your familys life at risk. More than 5. 5 Million People have been ordered to evacuate. It is the largest evacuation in floridas history. An 82 person task force is on its way to help for the after math of Hurricane Irma. They got a briefing yesterday before they headed out to drive across country to their staging area at an air force base in georgia. The task force 3 Water Rescue Team includes firefighters from south San Francisco, san jose and more areas. And more ready to respond. One crew already in the disaster zone of the caribbean. They are working to assess what is needed on the ground to help the caribbean islands, ravaged by Hurricane Irma. We sent an Assessment Team and they will look at the airfields and make sure they are capable of handling the air crafts that will deliver supplies. A 23 person medical crew also working in the caribbean. They have dozens of patients ready and they are expecting more with a 50 bed mobile unit on stand by. And here in the bay area, the disasters we are most in danger of experiencing are earthquakes and fires. Woo we are looking at the damage that can follow a major earthquake. Reporter you can so they are setting up the booth and gedding getting ready for the public to come on out. We showed you the earthquake and disaster kit and we showed you the earthquake simulator. And now we are going to have a fire simulator. This simulates what a house fire is really like and what the smoke conditions are like inside. It is very disorienting and it is to your disadvantage not to practice it. This is an educational tool we take out to the community. And what we show them is how to get out of the home a minimum of two ways and then how to shelter in place. Reporter and the first theng wrou said to me thing you said to me is when you come to the door, you will want to touch the door and see if it is hot. It can burn your hand. But if it is not warm or hot, you can precede. Reporter and we will allow ryan to go through first. And wayne told us how disorienting this can be. It is pitch dark in here. Wayne, as we go through, should we be low . Low and hugging the walls. If you cannot find a way out, you can shelter in place where the air is clean. You can imagine at night, you would not be able to see anything at all. We will work our way back to the trailer and come out through there. Reporter and you can get a sense of how disorienting it is. You have to remember when you are going out, bring the kit with you. Thats correct. You can imagine how disorienting it is for firefighters. You have to orient by touch when you capacity see people. Reporter and i think that is a lot of things that people dont thipg about first. A lot of people are used to having fire drills at school but you are encouraging people to do it at home. Absolutely, you do it twice a year. And i would do it with my kids and we had a Meeting Place and then would go have co co. They would have fun. Sglfrmths i could not see anything in there at all. That gives you a sense of how confusing and disorienting the conditions can be. Imagine if that happened at night. The reason for this event is to prepare for the disaster before it strikes. Imagine it at night or if you could not breathe very well. All right. We appreciate that live report. It is really interesting to get in there. Thank you, christian. A documentary over the Oakland Police department is hitting theaters soon and coming up, we will speak to the producer in our studio. Studio. Welcome back. Your time now is 8 45, thank you for joining us. We have a warm up coming up in time for your weekend. It is a tough time to be a police officer, especially in the city of oakland. The department has gone through several chafes in the last few wreerz. They got hit with an sex standal and is under federal reform. There is a raw and gritty documentary called the force, it is a look into oakland apd like you have never seen it. It will hit theaters on friday night. And now we are joined by the producer. With all the racial tensions with Police Departments all over the country, it seems like the timing of your film is perfect. The film is a part of a trilogy of films that look at the Public Institutions and the communities they serve. We looked at access to healthcare and then we finished that film and looked at what would come next. And i saw down with my executive producer and he was like, you should take a look at the mroes department. And this is a department that had a long history that goes back to the panthers and it was in the process of reform. And we thought it would be an amazing opportunity to go into the department and see what the reform process looks like. Here is a clip. I am here to run a Police Department x not a frat house. Tell us, was it hard to convince Oakland Police . Was it hard to get the mayor and chief of mres to come in . It took about a year to get the access. After the waiting room got so much attention, a lot of people came to me and asked what are you doing next. And so i told the mayor what we were trying to do. And a lot of people started helping from the periphery and a then a sent an email to the gate keeper and it went from there. Did it get better as you gained trust from whatever officer you were with that day . Yeah. There is big access with getting the chief on board and the staff on board and then there is the day to day access. The cops on the beat, community members, you know all of those microaccess. It is almost more important. And we really it was hard to communicate to the rank and file officers who we were and what our intent was when there was so much criticism of the police. That took quite a bit of time. And we were inbetted for about two years and after that, the relationships had been established. What did you learn . We learned a lot of things. I went in with some general understanding of that there are a lot of problems inside our Public Institutions in general. These are Public Institutions working with very limited resources. And they have a tiff klt time recruiting teachers and cops to work in these environments. We new there was aneshue regarding the moral fabric of these officers and the decisions they were making. What we noticed right away was the transappearancey of the department. They gave us access at a really challenging moment of the office. And that was pretty amazing. And as a documentary, you get closer to the subjects. You probably didnt want to stop. It got better and better as you moved along. And it was a punch to the gut when the scandal broke. I felt betrayed and i think the team felt betrayed. And this was a department that made so much progress and then that really hit us. So much talk about the reaction from the mayor and you can see the film this friday as it debuts. Thanks for coming in and all the best with the force. You can check it out at bay area theaters next friday. The grand lakes theory in oakland and in San Francisco. All the best, peter. Lets check in and get our forecast because we will get a little rain and a little bit of the hot stuff too. The rain is coming a little rater and not intime for the weekend. Checking in on your current conditions, upper 60s over San Francisco and low 60s in oakland. And san jose is at 66. And you can see all of the cloud cover is thinning out over the higher elevations. We may be partly to mostly cloudy most of the day, but along the coast line, maybe some partial clearing. The on shore breeze is with us but 16 miles an hour and weak. Here is a look at the afternoon, it pulls back and there will be partly cloudy skies over mont ray. And right along ocean beach, partly to mostly cloudy all day. 73 degrees for sals leteo. And into the east bay, 80 degrees and below 90s for danville and 94 degrees for brent wood. And 83 for san jose and low 80s in sunnyvale. And 73 in the city of San Francisco. Upper 60s between dayley city and pacifica. Some of our inner east bay temperatures are expected near 100 degrees on sunday. It will be a warm day with upper 80s in the forecast. Monday into tuesday, we see another switch in the pattern and we are looking at not only a good cool down for the inland communities but a chance for sprinkles on monday and the possibility for a thunderstorm or two on tuesday. So we have some active weather coming in and then wednesday, temperatures on the pleasant side. A little bit of rain would be nice. We could use it. The governor said if you are not on the road and gone by now, there is no time. It is time to hunker down. No time to hit the roads, you will not have time. Welcome to mornings on 2. Lets take a look at what is making the head lines today besides the hurricane. There is an 8. 1 earthquake that hit mexico, surpassing the 1989 quake that took the lives of thousands. Officials said get out if you can but at this point, you have to hunker down. We will look at the damage to the caribbean and deep south, but lets head over to rosemary who has been tracking the storm all morning. The friction on the land of cuba has showed it down to a category 3, but it is expected to regain strength towards florida in the coming hours. The winds are sustained at 125 miles an hour, moving west at 9 miles an hour and you can so how it is right there along the cuba line and will continue to skirt the coast before it moves north. This storm is 6 miles across from one end to the other and the peninsula is only 160 miles across. So it will hit everyone. Right now the path looks like it will move up along the west edge and even the eastern edge is expected to get some of the storm surge and the Northeast Area of the storm is the worst. So on the west edge where they will get the strongest winds and the east edge could see the storm surge. The adviseories are in place for the entire peninsula and they will last throughout the weekend. Here is a look at the path. As far as the time line, it is coming to shore as early at 8 00 tomorrow morning and at least at the moment, it will skirt along the florida peninsula, making it a little closer to georgia by monday morning and it will lose steam but still a strong category 4 is what is expected. All we can do is sit and wait. Well overnight, Hurricane Irma hit cuba hard. At least 21 deaths are being blamed on this storm. A masevacuation has been underway from florida up the carolinas as it closes in on south florida. We are in orlando, monitoring the latest. This weekend, stase with us for the latest on Hurricane Irma. We will keep you updated on air and online. I think right now, we have the governor who spoke again. Lets listen in. Do not think the storm is over when the winds slow down. Local officials will let you know when it is safe. The storm surge will rush in and it could kill you. There will be dangerous and life threatening winds and torrential rainfall of more than a foot. Rainfall is already starting and the wipdz will begin tonight. We could always see tornadoes. Please take action to keep your families safe and shelter in place. There is a mandatory Evacuation Order for mobile homes in orange county. If you have been ordered to evacuate anywhere in this state, you need to leave right now. Not tonight, not in an hour, now. You are running out of time to make a decision. Evacuations are in place across the state. More than 6. 3 million have been ordered to evacuate. We are listening to the governor, rake scott rick scott, of flr. There is still a little bit of time to evacuate but you need to do it right now. He talked about possible tornadoes and a foot of rain coming to the state. You heard the urgency in his voice discussing what is going on. Earlier this morning, he had a press conference and he said you have a little more time, make sure you get out and now he is like get out leave now. Definitely an urgency, i dont think i have seen a governor come out before something as catastrophic as this and say leave now or you may not make it. And he said, the storm surge will kill you so it is very scary. Now to the damage and casualties to the earthquake that hit southern mexico. The death toll is now at 61 and counting.
