Preparing for the worst. Preparing the house isnt bad. Its getting on the road and not knowing what were going to run into. We are hoping to get out of the state of florida. Reporter thats gridlock on highway as thousands evacuate the keys and mandatory evacuations are ordered for the Barrier Islands of miamidade. The storm will be bad so we want to get out while the going is good. We are going to be stuck down here with no provisions so we want to get out while the going is good and i have my whole family, my whole crew here, going to georgia. Reporter long lines are forming at gas stations and Grocery Stores where people are stocking up on plywood, water and sandbags. Its just scary. You know . We want to get to higher ground. Um, never had a cat5. Never experienced it. Its just scary what could happen. Reporter the governor of florida is waiving the tolls on allstate highways for drivers as they try to get out. The last time florida was hit with a cat5 storm was hurricane andrew in 1992. That storm destroyed 60,000 homes south of miami. Julie . Cristina, we have been reporting about the one confirmed death so far. What can you tell us about that . Reporter the Associated Press is confirm that one person has died on the island of antigua. The Prime Minister there said a 2yearold child was killed as the family tried to escape a damage home during the storm and there are unconfirmed reports coming in from other islands that suggest as many as 4 people have died so far but again, those are unconfirmed. Thank you. Now to our chief meteorologist bill martin. Were talking about winds still up to 185 miles an hour. Those will flatten homes. Yeah. Sure will. And thats at the eye wall. So the eye wall, where that goes, if this eye wall stays offshore a few miles, thats going to help a ton. If that eye wall comes onshore in eastern florida or anywhere, as it moves to the north, you are going to have much more magnified damage. Believe it or not. That eye wall is where most of the action is. Even though you get heavy rain and a lot of destruction, but the eye wall keeping it offshore is the key. Thats what we hope will happen here. We got the hot water out in the atlantic. You can see the temperatures are just you need about 80 degree water for hurricanes to stay intact. Look at that, 86, 86. This water is is almost hot 86 degrees. Thats fueling this thing. Thats why were category 5 and we could stay category 5 all the way to a few hundred miles south of florida. Thats significant. So its coming a little closer. By saturday and sunday, saturday and sunday down to a 4 most likely due to the friction of these islands, cuba and out here youre going as it moves over these islands, it loses intensity. It will probably drop it a 4. It looks as though right now its going to be right in this area of florida. Maybe make landfall, go offshore at jacksonville. You have low pressure here, bermuda high here. You see this curve, the turn . When that turn gets made is everything. So look at the models now. These are all the various models. And they are basically trying to keep the eye wall offshore. So that a lot is going to change but thats really good news in that if it can continue to keep the eye wall off the shore, that will keep damage down a little bit. The United States is going to have major impact from the storm as it gets towards the weekend. Still a cat5, a very strong hurricane. Within the last hour, the governor of puerto rico said the winds are like nothing they have ever experienced. Hundreds of thousands of people are in the process of evacuating from south florida. It hits the region this weekend. Youre watching ktvu fox 2 news at 6 30. Hurricane irma is one of the most powerful atlantic storms ever recorded. Ktvus Cristina Rendon has a look at the damage already done and the preparations being made as irma approaches florida. First, to our chief meteorologist bill martin. Reporter it looks luke saturday night into sunday morning it will hit south florida. It depends where that thing turns. Its a big storm. Its cat5. Its battering san juan right now. Its the north of san juan which is good. That eye wall is staying offshore. This thing will pack a punch to florida perhaps to the carolinas perhaps to parts of georgia. But if that eye wall manages to stay offshore, it will minimize the damage the potential damage. It will still be damaging and a major event. It will be better than having it do what the model here suggests it will do brings it onshore as a cat4. All these models youre seeing, they are changing every model run. So this model is going to change again. One of the things i have liked seeing is, this model which is the its a spaghetti plot but you see some of these models now are these are all the gfs, the euro, a lot of different models. And they are all sort of consolidating on keeping the eye offshore. That would be good. So what were tracking here and ill back it out a little bit again for you, if you look right here, these winds, so heres a trough here. This is the jet stream. And then theres a big strong High Pressure out here. And heres the hurricane thats going to be steered by those. So the sooner this thing turns, the better. And thats what everybody is waiting for, the turn. When does the turn happen . If the turn happens 50 to 60 miles east of miami, thats a very good case scenario. Its still going to be a problem but not as bad as if this thing were to go right onshore. So thats how that goes. When i come back, well talk about what happened around here today in terms of weather ander with were going the next couple of days. And where were going to go the next couple of days and also about irma. Evacuations are under way for the Barrier Islands of miamidade county. Now, we understand that Hurricane Irma first made landfall this morning in the Virgin Islands leaving behind flooded streets and damage to hotels and homes. The category 5 storm has sustained had sustained winds of 185 miles an hour. In puerto rico, power lines were down, trees were down, as well. Officials there predicting some of the areas will be without power for up to six months. And we have been saying that this is the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the atlantic. And thats why state officials in florida, North Carolina and South Carolina have each declared a state of emergency. Just a few hours ago we spoke with a man from fremont on a cruise in the caribbean. He tells us they are being rerouted away from the storm. Were pretty comfortable. The captain shared a lot of news and made us just feel comfortable that were going to divert the storm. That family was supposed to dock in Fort Lauderdale on saturday. But they say they are now delayed by two days. They are on their way as we speak to cozumel, mexico. Meanwhile, in florida, gas stations are closing in the florida keys as people try to evacuate. Rental cars there are sold out, as well. And the flights out of south florida are going to be canceled in the coming days as the hurricane nears so people of course trying to buy those last few flights out of the area. Thank you. The numbers of people who have died in Hurricane Harvey has now risen to 70 as the houston area shifts into recovery process. Today the house of representatives voted to approve nearly 8 billion in hurricane relief. But some in texas are now worried that the threat of Hurricane Irma will spread those federal relief dollars thin. So far at least 573,000 texans have registered for help from fema. The governor of texas acknowledged that florida might need some of the resources currently in texas. I have spoken with the Florida Governor about it to collaborate with him with regard to the resources that currently exist in the state of text that he may need access in the state of text that he may need access to depending what happens. Already the American Red Cross has put a hold on sending volunteers from southeastern states to texas in case they are needed closer to home. No one was in danger. There wants a Public Safety issue. They are very defenseless. Up next the felony charges that man is facing. A man from tiburon is facing felony charges tonight after he allegedly shot and killed two deer eating plants in the yard of his waterfront home. As Frank Mallicoat reports, that man is now facing felony charges. Then they come down here through the bushes across the driveway. Reporter they have been living on tiburons murray street for a quarter century. The bay views are spectacular and so is the wildlife. All you have to do is are wave your hand to a deer and it runs off or say boo and it runs off. Reporter just three doors down their neighbor 54year old Mark Dickenson was arrested Early Saturday Morning for fatally shooting a doe and one of its fawn pictured here. The two deer were killed with a highpowered pellet rifle complete with scope, laser and flashlight attachment. He said he was sick of the deer eating his landscaping an area he attempted to fence off. No one was in danger. It wants Public Safety. They are defenseless. So you know, a mother deer and her fawn doing what is natural just eating vegetation should be killed for that, um, is pretty unconscionable, in our minds. Reporter both deer were found close to his bay front property with multiple wounds. By the time the Marin Humane Society arrived, both deer were dead. It was a slow prolonged death. It was certainly nothing humane about it. Reporter dickenson, who is a pilot, was charged with felony animal cruelty. His attorney offered this statement. My client did not intend to harm the animals, the public outrage related to these allegations is driven by the inflammatory claims of the Tiburon Police department which havent been proven in court. No and i dont think we want to. Reporter neighbors were outraged over the loss but are very concerned that one of their own a fellow neighbor was toting a loaded rifle in the wee hours of the morning so the fact that somebody did that, killing an animal around here is crazy, in an area where so many kids are around and families and thickly settled. I cant imagine it. Its a tragedy. I walk here every day with the dogs and wondered would they if they were to wander off would they be hit and killed . Its a nightmare. Reporter the case is now in the hands of the marin district attorney. Frank mallicoat, ktvu fox 2 news. So were checking the temperatures today and they are just about where they should be. A little cooler than yesterday. Some areas about the same but most areas a little cooler. 88 in fairfield today. Still some humidity though. 45, 50 humidity which is higher than you usually see around here. Thats because of the clouds you see overhead here, subtropical moisture. And the thunderstorms that have been keying off on the Sierra Nevada over the last couple nights. We had some significant storms out there. Lets see what we have now. This was lafayette so theres some activity right here just down west of South Lake Tahoe so kind of placerville area, um, out by squaw valley as well some thunderstorms. So that continues. I think they will see some more of that again tomorrow and for us, we just stay with the pattern that we have had which is great. Remember last week when we had 106 degrees . You know, whoa, spare the air days, heat advisories and warnings, red flag warning we saw it all. So this week is a nice little respite. These are the current highs now. The wind cleaned out the air. The smoke is gone. The humidity is sticking around though. Theres a life camera shot right there and you can see a live camera shot right there and you can see smoke basically cleared the area. Air quality is good. Tomorrow look at all the cloud cover. So tomorrow will be hazy sunshine. Look what it does to the temperatures. 70s. Those are the 70s. In sacramento, just in the mid 80s. So a nice little cooldown tomorrow. And a nice day for your thursday. So just a nice respite from the heat. The heat will come back. Scattered showers will come back. See them there around 9 a. M. Tomorrow morning . This is the computer model saying certainly clouds about this would be a drizzle event. Also a possibility we could with this type of pattern because there were a few lightning strikes offshore might be one of those nights where you wake up and here some thunderstorms in the background or see a flash of lightning. Its very possible. Um, right now the models arent suggesting that. With low pressure offshore its possible. That would be fine, too, though. So into the next five days, nice looking weather pattern. Heats up towards the weekend. Sunday gets some heat like 97 so warm, but nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing like we had last week. It isnt. The nfl preseason is over and the 49ers and raiders are now playing for real. Yup. Mark will have reports from both of their camps coming up next in sports. Mark is here now. Baseball some good news tonight. The as break their losing streak. Its been a while since we have been able to say good news for the as. They break an eight game losing streak.
