The National Weather service tweeted out this graphic showing three hurricanes churning offshore. Right now, irma is over the caribbean while jose is still in the atlantic east of the leeward islands. And now a new hurricane, hurricane katia, is in the gulf of alaska. Meantime, the damage in puerto rico is extensive. There is heavy surf and trees and power lines are down. With 185mileanhour winds, irma is the most powerful atlantic hurricane on record. Authorities have issued mandatory evacuations for parts of Miamidade County. About 100,000 people in the Barrier Islands and coastal areas have been told to leave. Residents are fill sandbags, boarding up windows and doing whatever they can to prepare for irma. Florida governor rick scott is calling it bigger, faster and stronger than hurricane andrew. Hurricane irma landed in the caribbean islands this morning. The cat5 is the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Atlantic ocean. Ktvus Cristina Rendon reports. Reporter we understand that in the last hour, Hurricane Irma hit puerto rico heading to the Dominican Republic haiti, cuba and could possibly hit florida by the weekend where officials are urging people to prepare reporter Hurricane Irmas force hitting the british and u. Remember, we can rebuild your home. We cannot rebuild your life. Reporter the u. S. State department is warning u. S. Citizens to reconsider travel to cuba, haiti or the Dominican Republic. Irma, again, is expected to reach florida or possibly reach florida by the weekend. Julie, frank . Thank you. Lets bring in our chief meteorologist bill martin. How bad is this looking . Well, its so far out that its hard its bad, first of all. Where it is now, near puerto rico, i mean, its its a big storm. Its a cat5. Its the strongest storm in the atlantic. We have seen bigger wider storms. Big is wide. Strong is how much power this thing has, how much wind it has at the eye wall. One of the things i wanted to point out, heres the eye wall going to the north of san juan. Thats good news because the eye walls where most of the damage will occur san juan still getting 140mileanhour winds. But this system if it continues to ride to the north of the island chain at least to the north of cuba, in other areas, it will be very helpful to the damage that that could be laid out there. What i have laid out here is hurricanes love warm water. They need about 80 degrees to stay intact. Otherwise they fall apart. This is all 80degree water here. That gives you an idea like normally you might go, well, this thing is going to fall apart . The water is 86. Its going to lose speed over land potentially down to category 4 when its close to us but it has very warm water to go through. This is the latest model run from the National Hurricane center show it a category 5 until you get to the miami area. And then it drops down to a 4. What is steering this storm and whats most important you have a low pressure trough up here. You have the bermuda high out here. And between here is this wind flow. And the thing with these hurricanes is, you can see what the models are doing right now. Um, its you want to hit you want the turn. These things, once they get a little further north in latitude, they start their turn. They always turn. They come around the Bermuda Island almost always and when that turn happens, its going to be dependent on the two pressure systems and will have a huge impact on how the hurricane impacts the east coast of florida. Right now, heres what we have in terms of potentiality. Sunday, 145mileanhour winds. This is the National HurricaneCenter Center forecast. And then it goes all the way up here into monday as a category 3. So but this is going to change. This model run will change. But we go back, this is a spaghetti plot and what youre seeing here are numerous Models Solutions for the hurricane. So you see most of the models are in pretty good agreement with this thing going kind of staying to the east side of florida. I think thats good news. But either way, were just talking about minimizing damage because this storm, even if it goes to the east side, its going to have massive storm surge and massive rain and very strong winds. Its going to be a huge problem but maybe not as huge as it could be if a direct hit were to occur on south florida. Thats the latest. But this will change by 10 00 tonight. Hopefully not that much. When i come back, well talk about that and well have the latest on what you can expect around here. The number of people who have died as a result of Hurricane Harvey has now gone up to at least 70. We got a doctor on the phone today from the National Weather service as we look at Hurricane Harvey. Hey, doctor. Hi, bill. Good to talk to you. Its been a long time, hasnt it . Yeah, its been a little while. Its great to hear your voice. Were tracking this big hurricane. Its the strongest and longest lasting hurricane in the atlantic. Whats your take on this thing . Its a powerful storm and a dangerous hurricane and it, um, does seem to be tracking towards the south coast of florida. Warren, are you were looking at the water temperatures out in front of this thing. And they look pretty potent. Were looking at mid80s up into the east coast of florida. Whats your thoughts about that . We have warm water temperatures as you said. Of course, there are other things that come into play as well as it passes or brushes by the islands out there in the caribbean. That, you know, can act a little bit in the opposite sort of sense and diminish the strength a little bit and then theres the question of the vertical wind shear profile around the hurricane and how that evolves over time. Latest official forecast from the National Hurricane center shows a little bit of gradual weakening as it approaches the coast of florida but still powerful and dangerous. I think youre older than me. [ laughter ] i think youve seen a few of these. Well debate that somewhere else. I know you have been at the Weather Service lots of years, ph. D. Out of san jose state. When you look at this, whats the headline going to read on irma . Is it going to be wind, rain . Is it going to be storm surge . What do you anticipate with this storm at this date . Reporter so i think the two leading concerns are wind and storm surge. Were not seeing this hurricane do what harvey did and basically just stay parked in one spot for a long period of time and the copious rainfall totals that resulted. But its a very strong storm associated winds there at center are going to be very strong and, of course, they are near the coast, there will always be the issue with the powerful storm surge. This is a hard question. What we have had a lot of wild weather a crazy year, 106 in San Francisco, harvey just the other day. Whats going on . Its, um, its certainly been an extraordinary summer. But extraordinary summers happen. The implicit question i think is, you know, is what were seeing with all these things a reflection of Climate Change or is it just, um, its one of those summers where a bunch of things happen to kind of go in this direction . And personally i think the answer to that question is unclear. It would almost be kind of like saying, you know, heres a year where the top three hitters in baseball suddenly hit a huge number of home runs and does that reflect something changing with the baseball, something fundamental with the game of baseball or is it just the top three hitters happen to all have really good years . Sure. So looking at individual event, its hard to say. Its more in the statistics and how the trends change with time that we can look for evidence of those things. So you dodged that. Okay. The next thing just kidding. I expected to you say that and, of course, thats absolutely correct. But last thing i want to say is sure. One of the things i saw the other day, warren, i didnt think about this, but with Global Climate on the increase, um, the idea that theres a ton of extra water vapor in the atmosphere now, bazillions of tons of extra water vapor, is that infusing these storms . Is that why harvey is that why this could it be infusing these storms like an el nino kind of infusion . Its possible. And i can already see youre going to say im dodging this one, too. But ultimately we dont know. That in itself would say, yeah, more water vapor in the atmosphere, potentially stronger storms. But ultimately, the strengths of the hurricane reflects a lot of Different Things going on and thats just one. Its interesting. The previous category 5 hurricane in the atlantic basin, matthew, early october of 2016, but then there was a long gap that there were none all the way back to felix in september of 2007. Its great talking to you. Im going to call you later to chat. I havent chatted with you in a little while. Its been a while. That would be great. Thanks for making the time for us today. Absolutely. Pleasure to talk with you. See you, warren. So okay. You got that. Warren is the real deal. He is in the meteorological world. Hes the guy. So, you know, its hard to answer those questions i gave him because i knew he would have trouble with those. Um, for us around here, not as hot. Almost as humid, 45 humidity out there. Throughout the bay, a broad brush. But be ready for a few clouds and as mark pointed out earlier in the 4 00, a chance of a light sprinkle into tomorrow. Thats my weather headlines for the next hit. Well be talking about that slight chance of a sprinkle. But the beauty of this thing, we are not on the east coast and were not 105, 110 degrees tomorrow. We are in the nice mild pattern. So when i come back well detail it for you. See you in a little bit. Coming up tonight at 6 00 , a reminder of the dangers of lead poisoning. Reporter it started you know, with the hurricane, it kind of picks up and picks up. So about noon today here it started to get really intense. We are up against a harbor here. We had been on a sailing vacation and they called all the boats back in. And the hotel here put us up. So about noon, we started to hear things hitting the back of the hotel. Tting the back theres plywood against that area. We mothed into the back room and pulled our mattress we moved into the back room and pulled our mattress over us there. Its hard to explain how loud the wind was. You could feel the barometric pressure like when youre taking off and landing. There was a lot of that. You tried to pop your ears. It just didnt stop. You just knew there was a massive storm going on. Were you shaking . Were you talking with your husband . What were you saying to each other as this was going on . Um, i was shaking. He said i did a little sobbing. I dont remember the sobbing. I thought i held it together pretty well. We held hands during it. I prayed a lot. I it was really scary. Ktvus tom vacar went to Moffett Field today to find out what they are planning to do. Reporter nasa ames has an important tenant the fema emergency distribution warehouse. Its involved not only in the matter in houston but now Hurricane Irma. On most days, most every shelf of every rack in this 110,000 squarefoot complex is full of supplies that are stacked to the rafters. But today, many of moffetts racks are empty as fema has been sending the most critical supplies to Hurricane Harvey victims in the greater houston area. Much of the warehouse staff are also deployed to houston and soon to florida. Now, while these warehouses have all manner of goods, its really the big six, the things that sustain life, that are the most important and take up the most volume. Water, meals ready to eat, cots, blankets, tarps and plastic sheets. Fema can also supply many other items as it is capable of drawing on most federal supplies and services as needed. In the wake of the katrina disaster in 2005, the Obama Administration reorganized fema. Its warehouse staff was increased from 28 employees to 190 for better quicker service. The goal was to improve femas ability to acquire and deliver goods and services needed to relieve the suffering of disaster survivors. The federal government is ready.
