Hit since willma since 2005. This is going to be new for a lot of people. A lot of comparison to Hurricane Harvey. Also to hurricane andrew which hit 25 years ago, it destroyed 63,000 homes, stories of homes coming off their foundation, this hurricane has stronger sustained winds. I wonder how many resources are being diverted from Hurricane Harvey to Hurricane Irma. We have some east bay firefighters who came back from Hurricane Harvey and they are getting ready to go to Hurricane Irma. First, a shooting overnight in San Francisco, it happened at 22nd and california streets at midnight. A man had just gotten off a bus when he was shot. He was taken to the hospital. People who live in that neighborhood tell us this is unusual. Its the only crime that i have heard about like this. Its a quiet neighborhood but violence happens all around the city. We do not know if robbery was the motive for the shooting. As of this morning, police have not made any arrests in this case. San jose police are investigating a shooting at story road near sunset avenue, police hope to find Surveillance Video from hems and businesses in that area, the victim was taken to the hospital where he later died. The suspect was not at the scene when investigators arrived and investigators have not identified who they are looking for. Police have increased patrols eudz of a novato middle School Following the arrest of a 13 year old boy, he was taken into custody for threatening the school and the students, officers found fake guns inside of the students locker. Hurricane irma is the most powerful hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean and it just made landfall a few hours ago, gel is robberring, its coming while the United States is dealing with the after math of Hurricane Harvey. Reporter in the wake of Hurricane Harvey and its devastating impact on houston, people are not taking any chances with Hurricane Irma. We are preparing for Hurricane Irma to impact the state. Reporter with the potential for Hurricane Irma arriving, officials are warning it could hit with greater force than Hurricane Harvey, it strengthened to a record breaking category five storm tuesday with 185 Miles Per Hour winds, this video shows the storms fury. With Hurricane Force winds being felt in the north east caribbean President Donald Trump has declared emergencies in florida, puerto rico and the United States virgin islands, evacuation warnings are being issued as people are doing all that they can to prepare. But so far Hurricane Irmas path remains unclear. The turn could take the storm along the east coast. Reporter meanwhile, the texas gulf coast is still reeling from Hurricane Harvey. When you see everything that you worked hard for piled in the middle of your front yard, its a bit much. Reporter it appears that the biggest threat with Hurricane Irma could be the wind, not the flood waters like Hurricane Harvey. The house is scheduled to vote today to provide 8 billion of initially funding for Hurricane Harvey, treasure secretary treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin said the funding should be tide to the debt ceiling. Our First Priority is so make sure that the state gets money, its critical. The damage from Hurricane Harvey is expected to cost as much as 190 billion. Tickets for a Hurricane Harvey benefit consent went on sale this morning, prices start at 200 and go up to 1,000. The headliner is gorge straight, there are also performances from lyle lovett. Some of the concert will air tuesday night on ktvu fox news. We have more on where the hurricane is going and when is likely to hit. Every time we get a different model but it looks like it favors the atlantic side of florida and maybe its knot a direct hit. Right now its close to puerto rico, look at the eye, this is the lowest pressure ever that has been recorded. 2. 699 inches of mercury, gusts over 200 Miles Per Hour. The colors are the different forecast tracks, i would lean on the one towards the south. That is verifying better than those to the north. Look at the track, this could be updated again in the next 12 hours, that could take it close to miami and up the atlantic sued and then north up towards georgia and south carolina, this is another track here, it takes it closer towards miami, this has to be sorted out by the weekend. Until then, its a dangerous category five. The last category five to hit was hurricane andrew, we are in rare territory with a power house hurricane, the winds are stronger than hurricane an drew. A lot can happen between now and then, some models have it veering away from florida. When the winds are stronger, do you have a bigger storm surge . It depends on when it comes on the sea floor but you can get a stronger surge from that, if it moves fast, it may not be as high. Last week we were bringing you stories of bay area rescue workers going to Hurricane Harvey, now volunteers from the bay area are moving to florida to help with Hurricane Irma. They are prepared for the possibility of a worst case scenario. I work with someone with a great deal of compassion, thats what you want net to you. There were a few times i had to find him. I have had to go to him but normally i can handle almost anything. They packed up six emergency vehicles, the red cross said its mindful of keeping volunteers in california nation of a wild fire here. They have just given south San Francisco a learning lab called the science garage, teachers will teacher and employees will mentor students as well. They know that the Fastest Growing careers are in stem, science, technology, evening nearing and math and its future depends on it. Half of students say they are not interested in science. Reporter to bridge the gap, students learn that they can fail without fear of failure. Most kids are learners who learn by using their hands, our classes offer a lab, not a lecture, its a different way of learning. Reporter the students have a place where being smart is cool. When i was young, there were people who were saying, do not act smart, just be a kid but for me it was fun. Reporter he is focused on a career in science. I thought, why not try and take a shot at science, thats something i might go into. Those are the scientists of tomorrow. Reporter its a place that they can begin doing heroic things. They are more interested in what can they do to help the world be a better place. Because the class is so hans on, you doo science here hands on, you get to do science here. Reporter this is gb to be a template for other hightech companies to going to be so hands on, you do science here,. Reporter this is going to be a template or other High Temperature companies to set up labs. I remember, i never was interested in science, but its enticing to be in a lab everyday. Kids here are learning by doing, they are not just sitting there, its interacting, learning by trial and error, thats what is so poirful about the model. I know that high school, it sounds like you guys are on the way up. Things are changing. Things are absolutely changing, we are so fowrpt that we have an opportunity to have this partnership with genentech. It exposes the kids to hans on innovation, the idea is to make sure that they have resources some are inspired by what they are doing so they can consider science fields. I see this as respect for the students. My friends had gifts that did not fit into the tiny box of sit at our desk and learn and they were discounted as bad students. What is amazing about this, it opens up possibilities, we are trying new things, you do not have to sit in rows, its about collaborative learning, thats why the students love it. Do you think that genentech being in south San Francisco helped your school . Yes, since we are near them, they help us. They have been in the district for a while but we thought, what are additional ways to engage the students more fully, they have always been open to figuring out how can we help enhance learning for students. I was watching and i thought, its almost as if they are recruiting, was there a debate within the district where we maybe have to dry a line. What i love is that they are thinking about the future. We want to make sure that our students are prepared to go out and secure jobs in bio tech and stem fields, how great if they go back to the communities that they were taught in. We are hoping that they come back here. Maybe at genentech and other companies. You would be open to other companies doing something similar, not just in your district but other districts in the bay area. We are open to partnerships in general, we have to make sure we know the purpose and if it helps students. You grew up in stockton, there is no genentech or other big companies, how do the students in the smaller rural districts get in on this. Is about looking at the resources in your community and fostering the relationships in your community. Its about giving students opportunity and exposure. In south San Francisco, i remember walking away from that Football Game thinking i had never been hit so hard in my life. Now i will remember it for its science. They came in yesterday. They marveled at the facility. We are always looking for ways to make sure that they can engage in the science garage. Thank you for coming in. Thank you for having me. Its embarrassing that california shuts down its night life so early. Zoom is a Child Care Service providing immediate child care. Its designed for houses where both parents work outside of the home but need to get their children to school. For more on how this works we are joined by the ceo and founder, congratulations on the business. How does it work . So zoom provides safe, reliable and flexible care for children, we have an i phone and android app, you can set up a ride. People are using it for School Pickups and school drop office, taking children to various activities. Can it be scheduled at the last minute, as a parent, sometimes i am like, i am staying late at work, can you pickup my child on the last minute . So to insure 100 availability, we ask that you arrange the ride a day in advance but at the same time, you can request a last mine ride and its based on availability. We try our best to meet the requirements. There was another similar start up, shuttle. It opens and then shut down abruptly, what does zoom do that other Similar Companies were not able to nail down. The way that we approach the market is different, this is an everyday need. We decided the solution from the ground up, keeping families and children in mind. The first thing is that all of our providers have significant background checks and they are experienced in working with children. Plus, parents may say, what if i am not at home, the service is designed designed in a way that the drivers can take them to the activity, it completes the flow well for the parents, its more than just a ride. You could have a child as young as five years old being picked up. How do you get over the trust hump. Trust is the number one thing, we build trust every step of the way, the first thing is the drivers, they are highly vetted. They come from child care backgrounds. Secondly, we know that kids do not like uncertainty. They do not like to meet new people everyday. We provide consistency. The child knows the driver, there is a report aspect. How many users do you have . We have thousands of users using us in the bay area and orange county. The cost of the ride starts at 15 for a ride. So someone picks up my son to go to baseball practice, how much does that cost . It depends on the mileage, you can bring the cost down. You mentioned its likely the same person, you know how kids are, when they get to know the person, they like the same person. So the service is designed in a way where the same drivers will take you, you know that mary or lucy is picking me up. That brings stability. The drivers also know the routine so the chance are errors are small. I think that california laws are that you have to be 80 pounds before you are not this a child seat. We support booster seats. We leave the choice to the parents. With uber, a lot of the drivers that i speak with, its their second job, the people who drive for zoom, is this like a second job or a full time job and how do they get paid . Its a supplemental job, you work for from four to six hours, the typical person is someone who loves working with children and they love the flexibility and the predictability. We have all of the information that you need on zoom on our website, ktvu. Com. Its in the web links section on the mornings on 2 area.
