This is the northern flank of the fire. This is the area where firefighters were hoping to hold the flames. 15 minutes that way and beyond into the smoke there is a battle going on to try to put out the spot fires and another fire that has been working its way up the ridge across highway 20. Reporter the rocky fire now 60,000 acres and growing is doing everything firefighters didnt want it to do. Smoke to firefighters with 20, 30, 40 years on the job. They say this is unprecedented. [ indiscernible ] reporter the assault is a water battle. Air dropping helicopters take turns filling up and dousing the flames. Like a dangerous game. One spot is beaten down and another springs up. I have concerns. Reporter along highway 20. You can see the flames. This is where they are trying to hold the fire. Take a look here. It already jumped over the highway. 3 00 p. M. , clock work the last couple days. This is the time the fire starts making runs. Reporter far from it all at the red cross shelter quarter to 10 00 p. M. Last night. We were ready. Reporter they are waiting it out with their cats. We are sure that things are okay because everything keeps saying it is the same number of houses gone that was gone that had been gone yesterday. Nothing there has changed. We are going, you know . Reporter they are some of 5,000 people who evacuated. Now in a waiting game to see who wins. The firefighters or the fire. Reporter more than 7400 homes are threatened by the rocky fire. The conditions in the fire area are very different from the blue skies right here. That is why i have this, it is so thick with smoke. Choking smoke and shifting winds in the area. It is a different weather situation up that way than it is back this way. When you look at those pictures. Dramatic images of how large the fire is. I know you have been there, you are in an area, we havent been able to access firefighters, did they tell you what the game plan will be moving forward . Reporter i asked them, i said, if it did jump highway 20, this is before it jumped highway 20, he said that doesnt look good, let me see what that is and it jumped highway 20. He didnt know what the game plan was from there. Somebody does. He didnt know he was from southern california. They have a lot of firefighters here a long way from home and in for a long fight. Jumping highway 20, he said that was their number one concern. Thank you for the update. We want to get more on the fire. Joining us is cal fire spokesman. This fire is a monster. It will get worse before it gets bigger. We were talking about highway 20. The fire jumped highway 20. How big a concern is that and what is the problem with it jumping highway 20. A big concern. We were holding he would be able to hold the fire south of highway 20. Seeing this go over was not what we wanted to see. We have been preplanning for this scenario. That is why we evacuated the area. The fire north of highway 20 has burned 100 acres. We are hitting it hard. Especially with the aircraft. Trying to get retardant in front. As we are battling the fire we dont want this spot fire to continue to ignite and burn. As it moves north there is a lot of brush and the ability for the fire to continue to grow. We have been preplanning for this. That is why we have 3,000 firefighters batting the fire trying to get our arms around the spot fire. When we say 7400 homes are threatened, the latest cal fire estimate is that 25 homes have been destroyed. Are we going to see that number go higher . I am trying to get a perspective, how close are the flames to the houses . Reporter firefighters from day one have been working to protect those homes. Throughout the fires perimeter there are thousands of homes where firefighters have been able to defend it, keep the fire away from it. Our goal is we dont want to see more destruction. It has the potential to do more. That is why we evacuated a large area and put so many on evacuation advisories. Priority is life. We want it get people out of the area. The next step is protecting property. That is where our crews are doing structure protection while other crews are hitting the fire hard. Life and property always are number one priority. The firefighters must be absolutely exhausted. Are more replacements going to come in or can they handle it . Reporter we continued to bring in additional resources. From out of the state. We activated the California National guard and National Guard aircraft from colorado to help in the fight. With 9,000 firefighters assigned to the 20 large fires we are battling, our firefighters are worker hard, working 24 hours a day, we canceled vacations, held all firefighters on duty. That allows us to have more personnel available and we are shifting resources from other pats of the state and other fires. As the fire continues to grow, we are making progress. Honor flag this afternoon that had been flying in front of the Hayward Police department. It was put up last night and flew for 15 hours. One hour for each year of Sergeant Scott lungers service. It traveled all over the country honoring Fallen Police officers. It was flown at ground zero after the september 11 attacks. The family of a woman shot dead this morning is seeking answers tonight. Ktvus john sasaki is live where he talked with the grieving family and to a woman who witnessed the driveby shooting. Reporter just minutes ago friends brought balloons, candles and a flower to the place where the woman died. She was shot to death after 7 00 a. M. This morning. Reporter sheriffs deputies combed the road for evidence in the brutal killing. Located a vehicle that appeared to have been engaged with gunfire and inside was female. Reporter after 7 00 a. M. The gunfire erupted. I was in shock at the time because i didnt know if he would turn around and shoot me. Witness described the horror she saw. A young lady was in her car and a young man shot her to death. Reporter did he walk up to her . He was there, standing next to the car. He killed her. Then he walked to his car and drove away. Reporter investigators have yet to identify a motive but it could have been a crime of passion. Early in the morning. He had to know she was leaving at that time. And he had to know her pattern. He didnt have to do that. He meant to do what he did because he shot her so many times. Reporter later the womans family arrived. Before crews took the victims body away i over heard her mother saying words no parents wants to say, they are taking my baby to the coroner. They told me the woman was 21 yearold and on her way to work. She was sweet and kind and no one deserves what happened to her. Investigators say the gunman drove off in a blue or silver sedan. Investigators say a man resembling this sketch posed as a pizza Delivery Driver yesterday when he knocked on the door of a home. When a girl opened the door the suspect pushed his way inside and followed by two men wearing masks. One carrying a gun and the other person had a knife. The suspects were scared away because there were two adults in the home. The one suspect who wasnt wearing a mask is a white male in his 20s. 58170 pounds with blond hair. Make room for dash. The winds come in that surface. Extend that to 60 yeah. 60,000 acres. They are responding to the heat low. The winds are howling, they are getting funneled, pushed through the canyons and drawn in by this. Firefighters have their work cut out for them. The main weather pattern is helping scientists. Jurors moved one step closer to senting james holmes to death for the shooting inside the Movie Theater in colorado. The defense argued his Mental Illness meant he shouldnt die. The jury rejected the argument. James holmes is convicted of killing 12 people and injuring dozens of others in 2012. The decision gives both sides one more chance tosway jurors to sway jurors. The start of the school year is weeks away but the district is trying to find teachers. Why it is tough right now to find people qualified for the job. Reports that the water for the olympics is contaminated by sewage. But the top athletes who swam in it say it is just part of competing. High school math is a difficult position to fill. Bilingual educators. Reporter the superintendent even sent letters to teachers asking them oo refer teach to refer teaching candidates. I have been teaching for 25 years and i never got a plea from the superintendent. Reporter the Union President said it is becoming more difficult oo obtain good teachers to obtain good teachers. Among younger teachers it is the number one concern. I hear it all the time. I wont be able to stay in the district. Reporter the School District says another problem is fewer College Students pursued teaching careers. We are worried. It is something the district knows is on the way and now it is here. Reporter they are still confident they could fill all the positions by the time to bell rings two weeks from today. Does it have a plan to fill the spots . Madyson middletons mother told the San Francisco chronicle she hugged adrian gonzalezs mother as she was sobbing at a memorial for madyson middleton. She doesnt blame her and feels both of them lost children the night she died. The owner of a Construction Company and a project manager sentenced to two years behind bars for causing the death of a worker. The worker died in 2012 during a construction project. The build nothing specter issued a stop work notice but the Company Never shut the project down. Three days later he was crushed to death when a wall of dirt gave way. A jury convicted them of involuntary manslaughter. He was 39yearold and left behind a wife and three children. We received an update from police on a condition of a Police Sergeant wounded in a shoot without with a suspect. The sergeant was undergoing a second surgery this afternoon. He was shot in the hip. The gunman was killed. Ktvus alex savage explains, the sergeant and another officer went to talk to the man about a Sexual Assault when he started shooting. Reporter shell casings covered the sidewalk after a gun battle between police and a wanted man armed with an assault rifle. The morning shoot out left one officer wounded. The gunman dead and neighbors stunned. Shocking. Even though there is crime in the neighborhood we didnt think anything this close would happen. Reporter neighbors told us they heard several dozen shots fired. This happened 1 30 a. M. In the morning. Two Police Officers showed up at a home to question a 49year old man about a Sexual Assault that happened a few hours earlier. Before police had the chance to talk with him the man opened fire with this assault rifle. A high powered weapon with a 30 round magazine. The officers returned fire, hitting the man and he later died at the hospital. This doesnt happen very often. Potentially for it to happen exists all the time. The injured officer is a 14 year veteran who just became a sergeant. He underwent surgery at the hospital and is expected to recover. The man who was shot has not yet been identified. Arson investigators are looking into suspicious fires at hayward apartment complex that forced 75 people from their homes. Firefighters say the string of fires broke out on the third floor of the court yard apartments. Firefighters say 5 people were trapped inside their apartments due to the smoke and fire and had to be rescued. One fire was in a third floor laundry room and two were in stair wells. At this point we are having our inspectors go through the properties. [ indiscernible ] crews were able to get everyone out of the building safely. Two people were treating for smoke inhalation. The red cross is helping the families who were displaced. The chp got a few calls about its presence on interstate 80 midday yesterday and here is their explanation. It was a dog that was running on the freeway. Finally the dog went and hid under a bus that stopped in the fast lane. One of the riders took this picture and named the dog journey. Took 20 minutes to get the dog out. The dog had been hit but a veteran volunteered to take care of it. That veteran had been trying to find the dog for the past few days. Reporter under the deal he agreed to a 40 year sentence. He will not be eligible for patrol. I calculate he will be released when he is 83. Reporter he says he hopes the deal will help the victims move forward. That is something she doesnt buy. I think he is trying to make it look like he is a caring individual. Tonight dozen of homes destroyed and thousands of people evacuated as firefighters work against extreme conditions to put out the flames. I spoke to firefighters with 20, 30, 40 years on the job.
