Alex savidge is out there right now waiting for her to begin. This happened on Martin Luther king boulevard. There was a shooting out there. Again she is getting ready to begin to talk. What we can share with you this morning, the Oakland Police department did have an officer involved shooting. This occurred just after 1 30 this morning. This is still very new. Very fresh. Very active investigation. What we can share with you at this time is that officers responded to the 3800 block of Martin Luther king. They were conducting a follow up investigation that was associated to a Sexual Assault that occurred on the officers shift. So they are still continuing a preliminary investigation when their investigation led them to the 3800 block of Martin Luther king. When officers arrived what we do know at this time is that the suspect presented himself with a rifle shot at the officers. One of the officers was struck with gunfire. Both officers returned fire. We had multiple officers at the scene but both officers returned fire. The officer and suspect was transported to the hospital for medical treatment. The suspect is deceased. The officer is under going surgery this morning and listed in stable condition. I know there are many questions that not only the media has but our community as well. I can share with you we have our homicide investigations here. We have our internal Affairs Division and also the Alameda County district attorneys office. We have three levels of investigation. We certainly want to share with you as many details as we can. As the Investigation Continues but we dont want to compromise the case at the same time. I will share with you chief shawn whent will be holding a press conference later this morning. We will provide you with that at our time. Our officer is listed in stable condition. The officer will be under going some surgery so we will keep you updated as we receive information as well. This is still very new and active. It will be difficult to share with you transpired right up to the point where gunfire took place. We can share with you there was gunfire. As this Investigation Continues we will have more information later this morning. But what we do know is the suspects were armed with a rifle, shot in one of the officers. Two officers returned fire. The suspect was struck. Transported to a local hospital. Basically a man with a rifle opened fire on two Oakland Police officers. Fired shot thes at them. Two officers fired back. One officer was hit and the man with the rifle was shot and killed. We dont know for sure if the suspect was shot and killed was involved in that case or not. But this is a developing story. Governor brown has declared a state of emergency for california. He says the declaration will speed up help for thousands of firefighters struggling to control the states wild fires. Yesterday the state secured a grant from fema. Now that fire in lake county has burned 54,000 acres. Allie rasmus is here in the studio to talk about why this fire is different than all the other wild fires. It is one of the largest wild fires that firefighters are trying to deal with and its only 5 contained. It continues to grow. That really has cal fire concerned. The rocky fire is what its called. Its in lake county. Burned 54,000 acres. To put that size into perspective. Cal fire captain says its 84 squire miles burned. Its roughly the size of seattle. Weather conditions did improve over the weekend. The fire is still being fueled by dry vegetation in the area. And very unpredictable winds. Reporter the rocky fire has started on wednesday afternoon and has grown since then. At one point it doubled in size at a five hour period. In other news this morning another whale has washed up on to a bay area beach. What appears to be a hump back whale was found yesterday morning just south of muscle rock park. This is the third to wash up on the beach this year. Several other whales have washed up on other bay area beaches over the last few months and no one seems to know why. Wonder how it got there and i bond we are its going to go. There is no word if this is an adult or juvenile or a male or female but tests are being conducted to see how that whale died. How did things go with that weekend closure . Reporter well bart riders that i spoke with this morning they are happy that service has been restored in the transbay tube. Bart released a video showing the work. Improvements will allow bart to speed up service. They knew there were wouldnt be enough time to finish work this past weekend so there is another planned shut down that will happen in september for the threeday labor day weekend. A lot of people ended up using the ferry instead. Ridership doubled. Bart did provide shuttle buses for people who had no other options. But there were delays on it. We spoke to one man who used it. We came here so that we could be inside. And the Transit Agency as i mentioned will be doing this once again a month from now. So again service between west oakland and San Francisco is going to be shut down on the transbay tube. It will be september 5th through the 7th. So a month to plan alternative transportation. Police say the gunman involved in this Early Morning shooting was wanted for questioning in a Sexual Assault investigation. This was a crime that happened yesterday. But when Oakland Police officers caught up to this morning near mccarthur, that man was armed with a rifle. One of those officers were hit by a gunfire. Now this happened around 1 30 this morning. This is on mlk. Close to mccarthur. Neighbors in this area they heard a lot of gunfire out here as the shots were exchanged. Some neighbors call ktvu and told us they heard a couple dozen shots. Potentially fired out here. Now what is unclear and we asked police if there were any sort of verbal exchange before this gunman started shooting. Reporter this is still very new and very active. So it will be difficult to share with you what exactly transpired right up to the point where gunfire took place. We can share with you there was gunfire that was exchanged between the suspect and the officers. And as this Investigation Continues, we may have more information later for you this morning. Reporter a lot of people ended up using the ferry this weekend. Ridership on the San Francisco bay ferry doubled. On a typical saturday about 4,000 passengers ride the ferry. But because of the bart closure nearly 9,000 people boarded it. Now repair work that was done on the tracks it is not completed. And they knew it wouldnt be completed so they are going to do another closure over the labor day weekend. That threeday holiday weekend.
