Hours since the fire started, and it has already grown to more than 3,000 acres. More than 300 firefighters are on the fire lines, and more have been requested. Cal fire says the flames have been moving fast and homes east of the town of lower lake are evacuated. One resident told us five homes have been lost, but so far, cal fire isnt confirming that. Earlier tonight, we spoke to a woman who lives in lower lake. Reporter theres lots of branches there, theres a lot of homes, and theyre going in, theyre rescuing people. Theres trailers. People getting their animals out. If that fire jumps, theres no water in the creek. The fire is burning through brush and timber that is very dry from our drought. We do have a crew on the scene. They are telling us the flames are moving away from the town of lower lake now, but homes and ranches there are still threatened. An Evacuation Center is also opened at the highland senior center. Fortunately, its cooled off. The humidity has doubled. What we talked about last night, you get a hot night, you get slow recovery and fires the next day. Weve got a big fire burning just south of clear lake. Heres where were looking right here. Pretty remote stuff, but there are ranches out there. Theres people in this area. The current temperature now is 82 degrees. Humidity has doubled. It was 12 , now its 12 and the winds are relatively light. This picture sent earlier today from north lake, or from the clear lake area looking south towards the fires right after they started. A pretty impressive smoke plume. This plume showing up on the radar. This is the radar out of davis, picking up on this giant smoke plume that is indicative of that big fire burning. Conditions are going to get better for firefighters tonight, but tomorrow is going to be another hot day. When i come back, well talk more about conditions, and theres a cool down around the corner. In the east bay, a grass fire at the Camp Parks Military site in dublin flaired up again today. This is what it looked like tonight. Crews attacked the fire from both the air and the ground. Were told about 20 acres ended up burning. This is the same spot where about 250 acres burned yesterday. Theres now 98 containment of the fire. An alameda fire county spokesman tells us crews will stay on the scene all night tonight, just to make sure there arent any more flare ups. We will keep you posted both on air and online. New developments tonight in the case of maddie middleton. The 8yearold girl killed in santa cruz. Crews named the 15yearold suspect under arrest and he will be tried as an adult. Adrian gonzalez is expected to be charged for murder, and a special circumstance for lying in wait. The teen is also charged with kidnapping and several counts of sexual assault. Wednesday, they announced 15 yearold Adrian Gonzalez will be charged as an adult, but didnt elaborate on motivation. I can tell you this, people do things for lots of of reasons. Reporter police say gonzalez lured the 8yearold, who was on her scooter into his familys apartment. According to new charging documents, he tied her up, sexually assaulted her, before he killed her and putting her body in a dumpster. That was the rumor. No you couldnt. I was like no. No. No. [ music ] reporter this video of piano playing was apparently posted on gonzalezs Instagram Account sometime after maddie disappeared. In another, a comment reads, wears all black to try to look powerful and hide the crippling anxiety toward the future and the constant reminder that i will never find someone who loves me. A classmate describes him as joyful, and one who looked doing yoyo tricks. Middleton was supposed to start fourth grade next month. Even though the schools out for summer, grief counselors are being brought in to schools, and at santa cruz high so parents and children can talk. If convicted, he faces life in prison, but legally cannot face the death penalty, because hes a reminder. People describe him as soft, calm, soft spoken. She says she cant comment because of legalities, because of rules. When i spoke to a classmate of his last night, she described him as joyful, not a lot of friends, but the few friends he had, he was very close with. Maureen, thank you. A grand jury in ohio indicted a university of Cincinnati Police officer today on murder charges for the shooting of an unarmed man. The officers body camera recorded the moment the fatal shot was fired, and ktvus Jana Katsuyama with the video that was just released today. The university of Cincinnati Police officer was fired when the charges were announced today. The Prosecutor Says he was shocked by the video of the shooting, and that was not released until after the indictment, because of the sensitive nature of this case. Reporter prosecutors say officer raymond pensing activated his body cameras as he was pulling over Samuel Duboses car. He repeatedly asked dubose for his drivers license. I have my license. Reporter pensing asks dubose to unbuckle his seat belt and reaches for the door. Dubose reaches for the ignition, and the officer fires one shot, hitting dubose in the head. Wednesday morning, a jury indicted the officer on murder. The prosecutor had scathing words. Ive been doing this for over 30 years. This is the most asinine act ive ever seen a Police Officer make. Totally unwarranted. Reporter duboses family pleaded for justice. He didnt have a gun. He didnt do anything to that officer. No one deserves this. So im angry, but im as pleased as i can be, that were actually going to get some kind of justice for sam. Reporter his initial report stated he had been dragged by the car. The video shows pensing beside the driver, and it moves down the street after the shooting, until it comes to a stop on the corner. Pensing approaches the car and tells another officer he had been in danger. Its the first time in cincinnati that a local Law Enforcement officer has been charged with murder. The more cameras you have, the better off you are. Reporter oakland defense attorney john burres who handled the Police Shooting of oscar grant says its yet another example of how video can expose potential officer misconduct. Just a short time ago, i checked in with cal fire. They tell me the two separate fires that broke out about 30 minutes apart from each other are now very close to merging into one monstrous fire. I want you to take a look over my shoulder. You can probably see that bright orange glow, just up the road from where im standing. Im here on Morgan Valley road. That is where the fires are burning. That right now, julie, is where the fire fight continues. I want you to see what we saw. There are charred hillsides, and nothing but a wall of flames. I was standing down there with my photographer. We were about 300 yards from the flames, when i looked at him and said, i think its too dangerous. We need to get out of here. There was a photographer also down there with cal fire. He says this is one of the most dangerous fires that hes ever seen. At that moment, an air tanker flew overhead, and dropped a retard end. That in fact, julie is the way that crews have been trying to battle these fires. Relying heavily on retardant, dropping it. Joining me is lynn. These two fires really spread really quickly. Why was that . Quite rapidly. Even though today we had the triple digit temperatures. On top of fuels that havent burned for a number of years. Reporter you said the fact that this area hasnt seen any fire is one reason why we are seeing the flames just roll across the area. From a lot of it is a wilderness area. No fires in a number of years. A lot of vegetation out there. The fourth year of a drought makes it very dry. Reporter we also talked about a number of firefighters out here. More than 300. The number of aircraft, more than 10 air tankers. Whats the game plan. For now, the firefighters are going to try to hold the lines the best they can. She was telling me that the good news is that this fire is moving away from the town of lower lake, but the peer is that it may come back. So you know, some good news, some bad news. Also, for those homeowners here, some structures have been destroyed. Honestly, firefighters have not had a chance to go up to the scene yet to determine the number of structures that have been lost. Weve been here, weve seen a number of people driving by in trucks and trailers full of livestock. This is a heavily, predominantly ranching community. A lot of people who live in this area have homes and livestock. There is an Evacuation Center in the town of clear lake that has been set up. There are about 20 people that are there. So still a very tense situation here in the town in lower lake, where they are trying to come to grips with those two fires that continue to burn at this hour, as you heard, the fire fight will start again in the morning with those air tankers trying to get control. In the bay area, water districts in san jose and the east bay didnt just meet their conservation goals, they exceeded them. San francisco doubled its target, while the other two were close to doubling their targets. Governor brown gave water districts nine months to reduce water consumption, mandated cuts range from 8 to 36 compared to 2013 levels depending on a districts success in previous years. Its his job to find leaky pipes underground and out of sight. This is a high powered microphone, you press it up against a pipe, or a valve and if theres a leak, it will make a distinct sound. Water coming out of the ground is pretty obvious, but leaks dont always surface. Thats what were here for. Reporter theyre checking all 160 miles of water pipe in town. They stat started the work last year, and sing then have found more than 100 leaky pipes. Saving about 20,000 gallons a day. Baker finds the leak and city crews come out to fix them. Theres more of it, right . So youve got a bunch of fog lingering right here. Its going to be pushing up, even into the fire zones. Youre going to see increased humidity. Increased humidity is going to make things sticky tomorrow. Not as hot as today, but still hot. That moisture as it comes up, is sort of the weather trigger. Thats whats going to change everything. As this moisture moves up. Slightly cooler tomorrow. Cooler still on friday with that slight chance of a shower. But its all relative. Its going to be the ambient temperature is going to be cooler, but its going to feel kind of hot. Tomorrow morning, theres the fog along the coast. You see the moisture coming up .
