That is nothing compared to los angeles where prices are up 78 cents since last week. Ktvus tom vacar is here now with why those out of control gas prices in Southern California are now threatening us here in the bay area. Indeed they are. Californias 15 refineries have the capacity to keep us in our special clean air blend of gas but like many they like it export gas as well and that can effect californias supply right here. Reporter this is the tanker imagination. We staw move empty from saw it move empty yesterday, where it sat today loading refined product bound for chile. I called to see if they were exporting gas to south america but they did not respond. One of the things that crude Oil Companies and gas refiners do is they are watching the price in different locations and they will change the destination of a tanker if the price warrants it. California reminors argue crude oil supplies are tight and refining is also tight. California gas inventories are at low which causes prices to spike. And yet they are shipping to south america, to chile, central america. Reporter in chile a gallon sells for 4. 75 a gallon. Higher than california prices. Those exports reduce further what is available for california here driving our prices higher. This is one more tactic they are using to drive up price and their profits. We have a greater spike right now than we have seen in many, many years in california. So we this is unprecedented. It calls for more investigation. Back to the 13 million gallon imagination. Soon to set sail for chile. Fuel being dumped out of a market that needs it and prices staying high. Reporter nothing illegal is going on here. This is how a fuel market operates. Tom, what happens here . You have the oil industry saying they are not doing anything wrong yet a group is saying the opposite, the industry is increasing prices. Do you think prices will keep going higher . Reporter they haveb every ability they have every ability to go higher. Whenever inventories are low prices tend oo spike up. We are likely to see prices go higher before there will be diminish in price. There are questions, how can it be there is not enough crude oil . Did 5 refineries forget how to order oil . There are other questions that have to be answered. Bottom line is, the refineries are making more money, way more than they ought to be making. There will be an investigation and they will find out what will be going on. Thank you. A 27yearold woman accuses a specialists of inappropriately touching her during a massage.
