[ indiscernible ] reporter he spent the next 15 years trying to make amends and worked his way up to program director. But last month i. C. E. Showed up at his door and took him away. He has been at detention facility in Southern California since. In a statement i. C. E. Explained he remains a priority based on his criminal history. There is discretion that i. C. E. Has in who they are going to pick and choose to make a priority. Where the priorities are wrong is not letting him have a fair day in court to prove he is rehabilitated. [ indiscernible ] reporter he says he has no family tize in china. The only language he speaks is china. If he went to china he would be homeless. He has a lot of support. Attorneys in San Francisco are helping him fight his deportation. It is up to i. C. E. Whether he stays or goes. Back to you. He has been in the Holding Facility for a month. Is there a time limit as to how long they can keep him . Reporter there is no time limit. They can keep people in the facilities indefinitely. And there are case wheres people have been held for months and years while they await deportation. Thank you. Local agencies like the San FranciscoSheriffs Department and police dont have to enforce federal immigration laws. Reporter San Francisco sheriff Ross Mirkarimi is defending the decision to release Francisco Sanchez he is blaming u. S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials for allowing him to go free saying they knew where he was the whole time. I think i. C. E. Was quick to do finger pointing without i think reviewing their own reporter the policy has been in place for decades. The fact is, it prevents officials to acting with federal immigration officials unless there is a warrant. The goal is to prevent illegal immigrant from being deported for just being here illegally. If you have a situation where law enforcement, the police department, becomes an arm of immigration, those undocumented immigrants are not going to come forward if they are the victims of crime or if they saw a crime. Reporter opponents criticize the city and leaders. We talked to one critic. They decided that they want to create a sanctuary for illegal criminals and killers and it has nothing to do with protecting the rights of immigrants or keeping people from being deported. This was a massive failure. Reporter i asked if he could see changes to the policy that could have prevented what happened to Kathryn Steinle. Francisco sanchez is responsible for what happened. Lawmakers shelved the aid and dying bill today in sacramento. The bill called for doctors to prescribe medications for terminally ill patients so they could take their own lives. It was scheduled to be heard but supporters decided not to bring it up because they didnt have the votes to pass it. It faced opposition. It was inspired by the story of brittany maynard, the terminally ill woman who moved to oregon to take her life. Passengers made it back today after problems with one of the planes engines. The owner just agreed to a deal to finally pay for over due repairs after the city took her to court. Reporter we have been trying to talk to the owner for six months since 2 investigates spent a night there and discovered unsafe conditions. Even with the resolution today her lawyer wasnt happy when he tried to ask her a few questions. Reporter why did it take so long to get to this point to get the money to make the repairs. Moments earlier inside the courtroom a major break through to make repairs to this hotel in downtown oakland. 2 investigates has been exposing health and safety problems since february.
