Hamas says it has accepted a ceasefire proposal, but israel is still moving forward with its planned invasion of rafah. Our washington correspondent jessi tenure now joins us live from dc. And so jesse, have we heard yet from israelis about this hamas proposal . Justine, according to Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahus office, israel has not agreed to any sort of deal with hamas as of yet. And Biden Administration officials are on the ground there in the region to trying to help with all of this. At a critical stage right now, the israelhamas war in gaza could be closer to an end. The Terror Group Hamas announced monday it accepted a ceasefire proposal at the White House National security adviser john kirby says u. S. Officials are still reviewing it and will be encouraged when we get a deal in place and we can start seeing hostages get back to their families. The details of the potential ceasefire deal are still unclear. A spokesperson for israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu called mosses proposal far from israels necessary requirements. The news came just hours after israel dropped flyers ordering palestinians to start evacuating from rafah. A military operation in rafah right now dramatically increase the suffering of of the palestinian people. On monday, President Joe Biden told netanyahu once again that his troops should not attack. But netanyahu in says taking rafah would ensure hamas cannot repeat. Its october 7th attack more than a million palestinians are still sheltering their problem. Now, is there such . Limited places for them to go inside gaza and there is no effective way to distribute distribute aid to rafah has been a main entry point for humanitarian aid to gaza. Thats why u. S. Officials are still hopeful for a deal to end the fighting. These fires absolutely achievable. The cia director is also in the region trying to help broker a deal. In the meantime, israel did confirm that it is moving forward with its Ground Invasion of rafah live in washington. Im jessi tenure and just how congress responding to these developments . It does seem that by and large lawmakers are pretty skeptical of this hamas announcement of a deal just kind of like the Biden Administration and moving forward to one of their biggest priorities has, of course, been the release of the remaining hostages. And even though we have yet to see the official deal or any sort of kind of along those lines herbal point, things of that nature and official sure arent saying anything. It does seem like the hostages have been left out of the equation as of right all right. Well be following this. Jesse, thank you so much. Also today, the Jewish CommunityRelations Council released a statement saying it does not take positions on military did say in part here, we believe that hamas as a Terror Organization must be removed for military and political control over gaza. And that all options must be exhausted to return the remaining 133 hostages. We call in israel and the International Community to maximize humanitarian aid to gaza, civilians. Urge the idf to exercise caution to minimize civilian casualties. And that will go to stanford where theres a new display thats up for the hostages that are still being held cop captive. And for those who were killed in captivity, about 250 people were taken hostage and more than 100 people are still being held. A number we had earlier was 133 people. These people is leaving behind families that are waiting for hundreds of days for them to come on. And so have reserved seats to show that these chairs are reserved for them that were waiting anxiously for them to come home. And then we also reserved a signs over there. And better. Effectively a vote, grave for those hostages who murdered a year while in captivity or before being taken captives and hamas is holding onto their bodies and refusing their families proper funeral and a proper goodbye. One of the goals of this display helping jewish and israeli students feel less isolated on campus. Students at San Francisco state continue to camp out on the campus quad in support of palestine. Demonstrators are demanding that the university and u. S. Officials disclose Financial Times that the college may have with israel and then divest students say once they see the university taking steps to meet their demands, then they will consider cleaning up their encampment. I once we start seeing implementation and we have a clear layout of those plans, have a schedule to know that not only have they agreed, but theyre actually putting into action. Our demand. Then we can begin discussing the process suspending the camp ross as state Officials Say they will respect the students right to protest and will work to keep everyone safe. Propalestine supporters that set up an encampment that uc berkeley are now negotiating with school officials. So far no agreement reached. That would end the occupation on campus. Among some of the demands from the protesters, they want the university to financially divest from israeli interests and also condemn israel is doing in gaza to fight hamas. And then they also want students and teachers to be allowed to speak freely about the conflict without the fear of punishment. And today, Columbia University canceled its large universitywide Commencement Ceremony following weeks of palestinian protests that have just done a lot turmoil on campus. Students will still be able to celebrate that. A series of smaller schoolbased ceremonies this week and next, another campus shaken by the protests, emory university, it announced today that it will move its commitments. A Commencement Ceremony from its campus quad in atlanta to a suburban area, but others, including the university of michigan, Indiana University and northeastern have done their ceremonies with very few disruptions. And these propalestine student activists, usc say theyre not done after a Los Angeles Police cleared their encampment over the weekend. This is students prepare to graduate this week.
