Thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 2. Im Justine Waldman and we will begin in the city of San Francisco as today marks the grand opening of the china basin park. Its a project thats been over a decade in the making. Kron fours. Charles clifford is live for us with more on mayor london breeds announcement and what this park a means to the city. Thanks for joining us. Well, good afternoon. Im in the china basin park, which is now open to the public. This is the bike path or you can see oracle park off there in the distance behind me. Lets go and take a look at some video talk about this park a little bit. It covers about 5 acres along mccovey cove here. There is the bike path. As i mentioned, they also have really nice bathrooms here. New bathrooms of got a beach, a small dog park. Theyve got about an acre openspace meadow there. We can go out, have a picnic and look over towards the water. Theyve also got benches and a recycled water system here that all the laws or water using recycled water from the nearby New Buildings that they put in here in mission rock. Now the mayor at a Ribbon Cutting this morning talked about how this is just one small part of a much larger plan thats been in the works for decades to redevelop this area. It includes residents, families, a new school being built so much has changed in this, right. This is a new neighborhood of San Francisco. Yes, it is. Here in china basin park is open full time. Anyone come down here and check it out. But they are going to have events are going to concerts here, food trucks and theyre going to have live music. Youre as well. Were also following some developing news now is that was a horrific sight in the east bay after a fiery crash. Left multiple people dead in pleasanton kron. 4 such a call is live from the area now with the latest on this crash. Thanks for joining us. Justine definitely a tough day for this community. Its clear this was a gruesome scene last night in from the limited information that weve learned from the police department. We know that multiple people did die here. In fact, were told from a Community Member that entire family may have been killed in this crash. There was only one car involved in based on the layout of the aftermath. Its clear to me that speeding was involved in. Thats not uncommon in this area. The crash happened at around 9 oclock last night. It appears that just as foothill road switch from 2 lanes to one just south of stone reads, drive the car veered off the road, slammed into a light pole with signage and then barreled into an oak tree. The tree and the ground around it are burned out and there is still foam on the pavement likely sprayed by the fire department. So there were flames and it seems like they got pretty high. Not surprising to learn. Several people died shortly we arrived on scene this morning. A father with kids in the local School District said he did not know those died but believes children were killed. And he dropped off a sign saying rest in love and may your family find peace . Its all family. Theres not much we can do to support just like it. Just trying to show support for game. We have unconfirmed information that at least 2 kids were killed, one in middle school, the other an Elementary School we spoke briefly with the Pleasanton Police department and ask for more information. But at this time theyre being tightlipped. And thats because theyre doing so out of respect. But the people that have been impacted by this in that seems to be a lot of people we live in pleasanton Philippe Djegal all kron. 4 news. Thank you. So we are starting to feel some wind from this, but also notice a few showers start to make their way into the north bay that you can see right here. Very light. Maybe not all this hitting the ground, but in indication of whats headed our way into the overnight tonight, we could have that chance of a shower into tomorrow as well. So when going to keep going this afternoon tomorrow, its going to get even breezier windier. So just be ready for this. We could see gusts upwards of 30 Miles Per Hour. And then you can see as we get to saturday, its still going to be with us before. This wraps up now, the good news is when it does wrap up, weve got a really nice weather on the other side of it. Temperatures right now. You can see in the 50s 60s santa rosa pushing it there. Its 69 almost a that 70 degree mark, but were still a little bit below average today. And as we go through tonight, were going clouds with us that slight shower chances. And it showed you kind of coming into the north bay right now and gusty wind. Now, temperatures will actually be pretty mild. Were talking upper 40s to low 50s. So that part is going to be a little bit quiet. We do have a really nice weekend on tap. Weve got our first glimpse of an israeli hostages from berkeley has not been seen since hamas attack israel. In october, hamas released a video of 23 old hersh goldbergpolin who was kidnapped at that nova music festival. Experts say it appears that hes speaking under distress as he blames the Israeli Government for neglecting the hostages for 200 days. Goldbergpolin is missing his left hand and part of his arm. Now reportedly from hamas grenades that were tossed into a shelter where he was hiding. His parents have sent messages now speaking directly to him, telling him to stay strong. Goldbergpolin has become one of the most recognized hostages and their posters of him posted all over israel. Israel believes about 100 hostages remain in captivity. And in the east bay, protests are calling for a ceasefire gaza. Theyre growing now on the uc berkeley campus. Demonstrators created a tent city right in front of sproul hall. Its in solidarity with the other. Universities are doing the same thing all across the country so far here there are 70 tents at cow. Participants say they will stay there until their demands are met. And that includes the the University Calls for a ceasefire in gaza and stops any Financial Support to israel. A uc berkeley spokesperson says School Officials are watching this situation. He says, as of now, the camp has not disrupted campus operations. It comes to nonviolent political protest. The campuses are not to use Law Enforcement unless it is absolutely necessary. To prevent bodily damage or threat to anyones life. Were not at that point. Uc berkeley Officials Say the safety of all students continues to be their top priority. And from california to texas to illinois and georgia, pro palestine encampments have been spreading. Police have been stepping in demonstrations have been seen today at campuses, including ucla, the university of texas at austin, northwestern and emory students are protesting against the israelhamas war in gaza and also against their schools. Financial and academic ties to israel and weapons makers. Some demonstrators have gotten confrontational. With authorities and dozens of people have been detained. Former President Donald Trump returned to a new york city courtroom today for his hush money trial. Trump faces 34 felony counts for falsifying business records. Our washington correspondent Jessi Turnure reports on what happened today inside of the courtroom. It is no case here in testimony thursday, the x publisher of the National Enquirer tied former President Trump to payments to buy it, then kill negative stories about him ahead of the 2016 election. For a battle between a Community Living on houseboats and a landlord that fight is now heating up. And the city of alameda stepping in by filing a lawsuit. The city is alleging the owner. Is harassing dozens of tenants and preventing them from selling their homes. Many are seniors and they have lived on the u. S. House boats for decades. Kron fours terisa stasio shows us whats happening here and what the city says. The tenants really deserve. This is barnum arena home to more than 50 Floating Homes 2 years ago. Valley investment, redwood llc. But the private marina in alameda and that alameda City Attorney says is when the problems started limitations under the citys rent control this year, its about a little less than 3 . But the increases of the tenants are reporting a go as high as 178 . As the problems have only escalated last fall valley investments, redwood llc. Sued and lost their battle to beat down a rent control ordinance passed by the city to help the tenants. However, City Attorney jean says that the owner continues to harass a tenant, refuses to pay the city fees and a myriad of other issues. And it is unconscionable to take these actions and even more impossible to not back down after governmental authorities. Have given you so many opportunities, so many opportunities to reach out and to find a way to see compliance. The City Attorneys office truly finds that theres no other choice than to bring this inforcement in this lawsuit. The city says it has teamed up with the Alameda County da to force a valley. Investments, redwood llc to comply with the law. Essentially asked a court to tell the owner of that their actions violate the law and must stop immediately. We are also seeking penalties because these actions have had real impact on attendance upon health over the last 2 years, a continuation. Lost my wife to cancer 2 years ago. This was our retirement. But has had no success in contacting them. We have meteorologist kyla grogan here now with the official forecast. Yeah, 3 z out there for sure. Its also, you know, getting some sun. But the clouds come back and kind of playing cat and mouse with us a little bit. You can see as we take a look across the bay here obviously youve been in the clouds all day today. San francisco has been in and out a san jose in and out as well. But now kind of sitting in the cloud. So obviously were not quite done with all of this, right. We look at the difference in temperatures, though. You can see its about mix. We have a few that are a little cooler and a few that are a little warmer. But all together, were still going to be running below average today. And you certainly see that san jose at 65. You can see 63 in oakland about 59 in San Francisco. 69 in santa rosa. Interestingly enough, weve actually got a few showers that are starting to roll through the north, a very, very light. But just to show you futurecast, we do have that chance of a little pop on the radar, not just tonight, but as we get to tomorrow. So this is your friday morning. Obviously, we start cloudy. Weve got that chance of a shower as we get into the afternoon. Thats what i think the chances ramp up. And those of particularly in the inner east bay. So im looking at you, antioch rate. Youre just going to be right on the line of where some of those heavier downpours are going to roll through. So there is a chance that that could be a part of your forecast in the afternoon. So just heads up now, having said that, im not expecting a whole lot of rain. So its just whether or not get caught in one of those quick showers that rolls through. And then once its done, its done. I think that the wind has a bigger impact. And while were breezy today, were really going to pick it up as we get into tomorrow. We could see gusts upwards of 30 Miles Per Hour as we get to the Late Afternoon and evening on friday. So i said this yesterday about today. Im going to double down on it for tomorrow. Remember, we play this video for you yesterday. Well, now a resisting arrest with violence. The incident was caught by kron 4 cameras during a tuesday evening interview with san jose mayor matt mahan at first in san fernando as steps right next to the mayor. Both he and the plainclothes san jose Police Officer providing security for the mayor inform pollard. That interview is under way do it. Were moving on record. I was just talking for reduced. Mark. Pollard uses profanity and tells the officer to mind his own business. What happens next is off camera. Its unclear who touches who first. But pollard is heard saying all smack you right right now 9 seconds later, he does just that hitting the officer in the face and head at least twice at that point. A scuffle in season. Police are called witnesses say at some point pollard begins yanking on the officers tie after 2 more minutes and police nowhere in sight. A customer from a nearby business comes to the offices. Rescue removing pollards hands from the officers tie and allowing the officer to handcuff him. Police eventually arrived and took pollard into custody. One person who witnessed the confrontation but didnt want to go on camera says hes not even sure that the suspect knew the mayor was even involved in all of this and was definitely clear that the person did not know that the security person protecting the mayor was actually a san jose Police Officer. While kron 4 has posted edited version of the video online sent as a police point out in a statement, the video does not contain the entire incident in particular. It does not include the officer identifying himself, nor does it include the many attempts teammate to deescalate the situation and avoid using force or taking any enforcement action. Police confirm pollard has an outstanding arrest warrant out of georgia for resisting arrest with violence. The officer was hospitalized overnight with head and neck pain. But its now been released. The case is now under review by the Santa Clara County district Attorneys Office. Dan kerman kron. 4 news. The long anticipated documentary on the alexis gabe murder was finally released and then that the vent 23, a woman from oakley, went missing in january of 2022. And her partial remains were found near sacramento just months later, gabes family, friends and Community Members gathered at sabrina pizzeria in oakley to watch the documentary together last night. The gabe family has been pushing hard for it to be released. They hope that a change is the Public Perception about the case and possibly leads to charges against the mother of alexis is exboyfriend. Marshall jones. Jones was the primary suspect in the case he was killed in a Police Standoff after watching the documentary. Alexis, his parents say they were disappointed that the final product was missing. Some key pieces, including a video of the suspects. Mother. That video is really important and expecting to everyone to see. To the police. Something like he said Something Like was cold but its not. With h and especially the inside of the house speak. What they do to us. That in. Especially so in a statement to kron 4, the contra costa County District Attorneys Office says, quote, based on the evidence we have been provided by the investigating agencies. Theres no indication anyone other than Marshall Jones was directly involved in the murder of alexis cape either as a director, perpetrator or an aider and abettor. The gabe family says they still intend to file a lawsuit against joness mother. A bill making its way through the state legislature wants to double the fines for protesters who block highways and freeways. This is coming after protesters blocked the Golden Gate Bridge calling for ceasefire in gaza. California has seen an uptick in the number of these types of protests over the past few years. The bipartisan push comes amid a wave of protests. Henry relation to the israelhamas war under current state law. These protesters are find anywhere between 10500. But this bill aims to deter protesters by increasing those fines going all the way up to 1000, depending on past convictions. Because we see that these laws on the books are are not enough, right . Theres a good time to time to whats happening now. We believe in doubling that would give them mark tolls in their tool box to go those that are continually putting others lives at risk. Keeping parents from dropping off their children school, things like that. The california Highway Patrol association is in favor saying that these protest prevent First Responders from doing their job. The exective director of the council on this american america. Excuse American Islamic relations spoke out against the bill saying legislators are using the pretense of transportation and Public Safety to quell First Amendment activity. The bill passed in a Transportation Committee now goes to an Assembly Appropriations committee. All state could start to resume new Homeowners Policies in california. If your flight is delayed or canceled these new refund rules begin 6 months from now. So will help during the Summer Travel season, but should maybe by the holidays. Could come in handy. Scramble to find other. Airlines flights to get on and then have to pay for that and not get refunded because you chose not to take that flight. So, yeah, its been frustrating. You can see the overnight with those temperatures drop the snowmaking kind of get going and then it gets into tomorrow. We have another little wave of moisture that rolls in. Theres friday afternoon by friday evening. Things should quiet down. And then as i mentioned, saturday will be pretty nice day out there. But when its all said and done, it is spring snow. So its not going to be a big system. But 3 to 6 inches of snow up at the peak. So a Little Something to happen for this weekend. So just be aware if youre headed in that direction. All right. Some new details now about the terrifying crash of a Universal Studios tram which overturned and that sent passengers falling onto the pavements. One family hurt in this crash has now hired a lawyer.
