You for joining us tonight. Im noelle bellow, the cofounder of San Franciscos glide Memorial Church passed away today at the age of 94 leaving behind a massive legacy kron fours. Sara stinson spoke with folks at glide and Community Leaders about cecils life. She joins us now live in studio with her story. Sarah. Within the first hour of reverend Cecil Williams, passing people filed in the glide Memorial Church in San Francisco to honor him. Remember him . Many of them telling me they feel privileged to have even known him at all and grateful for the work he did to serve those in need influencing people across the world. This man of peace, this man of justice passed away hear but i really cant believe its record. Williams was the cofounder of glide. He was also a civil rights and lgbtq activist. Was a larger than life figure. Minister marvin white intern for williams when he was 18 years old and has become his protege. He says hell never forget with the reverend told him he said. I need for you to be you. Glide put up photos of williams over the years with people of all walks of life from political activists like bobby seale and angela davis to politicians like Nelson Mandela and celebrities like marvin gaye in sammy davis, Junior Williams was also Close Friends with former San Francisco mayor willie brown. More than 50 years. Yeah. My friendship with Cecil Williams. In valuable him for me. It will never end. Brown says he worked with williams and doctor Martin Luther king junior in the 60s during the Civil Rights Movement before williams helped open the church. Merry christmas to you. The reverend was known for making everyone feel like family opening the church doors to all making the institution. One of the most liberal churches in america, 2 women to poor folks to workers. 2 black folks to brown folks too early. Organizers. On and on and many say williams was not the same after the passing of his wife in glide cofounder, janice america, tony in 2021. There. Many times that he would. Audibly and sonically just whale just thinking about not being with her i think also he showed. That he have to keep going. Mayor london breed did release a statement about williams as well, saying in part, quote, reverend Cecil Williams was the conscience of our San Francisco community. She goes on to say he led with compassion and wisdom always putting the people first and never relenting in his pursuit of justice and equality. His kindness brought people together and his vision changed our city and the world. Governor newsom also released a statement tonight saying reverend williams and his congregation offered refuge and support to all who enter their doors. Their tireless work to empower marginalized members of the community. Put them at the forefront of key social justice and human rights issues driving positive change. All of us can take inspiration from his legacy. New at 11, the Group Leading the effort to recall Alameda County District Attorney pamela price is calling on the county supervisors again to set a date for the recall election organizers with safe sent a letter to the board saying according to the States Election law, the board must set an election date during its meeting on april 30th. Tonight, were learning the body recovered from a reservoir is that of a San Francisco man . 24 yearold oscar rafael ca flores was swimming at the Woodward Reservoir in stanislaw county on saturday. Officials say he appeared to guard tired and struggled to keep above the Water Surface and drowned. First responders found him about 45 feet from the Mountain View point shoreline. Authorities are reminding everyone to be prepared for emergencies. And if you plan to be outside in the water, you should be wearing a life vest. A man is in the hospital with lifethreatening injuries after being hit by a car in san jose. According to police, that man was walking in the area of south first street and hollywood avenue earlier today when he was hit. No word on the driver at this time. Another big story weve been following. Crews will be working all week now to fix the sausalito pier in hopes of getting the ferry service. Back up and running again. The ferry route between San Francisco and sausalito has been out of Service Since friday evening. A routine inspection found damage to one of the piers for terry spokesperson says while work to repair that pile began over the weekend, they can only work during low tide. So those repairs may take some time. The suspension and service is affecting about 500 people daily. It was kind of surprised because i thought its easy to fix, but they could kind of looks like its not easy to fix. So putin. Its not going to last. Until the repairs are made, golden gate transit is providing bus service to and from the city. The pier was built back in the 70s. San jose apartments that are meant to help bring people out of homelessness are now facing a slew of complaints. There have been reports of breakins and drug use and tenants a little to nothing is being done to try to fix those issues. Kron fours jeff moment reports. Its been held since ive been there. Genome monarch has been at the renaissance apartments for 4 years. She talks to us with 3 other tenants. All of these safe living. There is feel r tremendous amount and a lot i have been broken into my apartment exactly 10 times due to says when she reports these issues to property management. Theyre either met with silence or retaliation. I have many people that has just wanted to packet grab a kid least in there because got making it their better and that claim to gina and others hits close to home. The apartments are run by charities, housing and are meant to be the first housing for people who havent had a place to call home. They stay here for 2 years and then go on to a more permanent apartment. Many of the people who stay here are recovering from years of living on the street. Levi send witness. Someone hitting at a woman. Lisa mooney says her first year at these apartments she would still sleep outside. Claiming it wasnt a stressful opposed to living inside. Its kind of discouraging 2 years ago, san jose spotlight published report of similar concerns and even reported apartment employees filming attorneys who are investigating the property apartment management denied the allegations reported by spotlight. Everything got better. Know theresa tovar. A tenant of 2 years says she also sleep outside her apartment most nights. She shows us the complaints filed against the apartment at letters her family wrote to those in charge. She says, though she is not hopeful anything will be fixed. Today at the bay area was honoring earth day in the south bay volunteers from the San Jose Earthquakes and cocacola planet. Some new trees. On saturday. The group planted 30 new trees throughout japan town in san jose. They teamed up with nonprofit our city forest for the 3rd annual Tree Planting event. Volunteers have planted more than 40 trees across the bay area over the last 2 years. Happening tomorrow outside lands lineup is set to be released. Just 2 weeks ago, a local synagogue was awarded a security grant from the state paying for extra guards during passover. Very sad situation that we have to rely and security were thankful to the state of california for giving this security grant. But its really a shame that we have to do this. A local rabbi says these guards will help the congregation celebrate without worry of being attacked. The remains of a gray whale found offshore in alameda over the weekend is now at angel island after being towed across the bay today, the 40 foot long carcass was first spotted on saturday evening. Experts determined it was an adult female gray whale biologist from the Marine Mammal center and the California Academy of sciences are now going to be performing a necropsy on the whale trying to figure out what happened. We will open the whale up. We will look inside. It will look for signs of cause of death. And its very sad, though. I want to know what happened. Id like to know what happened to whale. Its not clear when that necropsy will be performed or how long it will take. Officials with the Marine Mammal center tell us this is not the same whale that we reported on. That was entangled 2 weeks ago. This is however, the first reported dead whale in the San Francisco bay this year. California has a new state park. The newly restored dos rios ranch preserve is located in stanislaw county restoration of that park included the planting of 280,000 trees across 2100 acres. The official opening date is set for june. 12th. It will be the california state park systems. 280st park. Take a look at this. Cars had to drive carefully today on highway 24 3 cowboys. That means were going to see chance of drizzle and cooler temperatures mid week and then late in the week weve got an actual cold front dropping in does not much energy to it, but theres a chance it could bring some showers. The bay area, not tomorrow. Maybe a little drizzle. Coast side temperatures much cooler 50s and 60s in San Francisco about 58 degrees in pacifica. 58 in Half Moon Bay inside the bay.
