Tire starts falling off the left rear side of the airplane. There it goes. This is moments after takeoff. This is a boeing triple 7 that took off just after 11, 20 this morning. It was headed to japan at the time. Now weve learned the flight was diverted to lax where it landed safely at one 15 this afternoon at sfo. Officials are telling us that the runway where this plane took off from was briefly closed to clear the debris. It has now reopened. United airlines has now provided some new information about the flight with a saying that there were a total of 249 people on board 235 customers, 10 flight attendants and for pilots. Thats the breakdown. The plane does have 6 tires on each of its 2 main landing gear struts. So its designed to land safely, even if it is missing or has any damaged tires. So the United Airlines statement also reads this in part united flight. 35 last one tire after takeoff from sfo and landed safely at lax. We are ranging for a new aircraft to continue this trip for our customers. So as we work to get more details about what happened at this is video here showing us the plane, a landing lax. Again, all the passengers on board we understand are safe and were not hurt. And the plant, the plane, as united said, there is able to land safely its missing any of its gears. Were also working to confirm exactly where that tire that blew off this plane has landed. For more now, were going to turn now to our anchor ken wayne here at kron 4. He flies planes as a part of his job. Part of the hobby is or residential aviation can. When you heard this. Thanks for joining us. By the way, this afternoon, when you heard that this plane had this tire fall off and were going to watch here is the plane lands safely at lax that this tire went off. Are you concerned at all about the safety for the passengers . Are you aware that planes are built to be able to land missing some of its landing gear . Well, obviously its concerning something you dont want to see happen. One of the things thats really interesting about the triple 7 the landing gear itself and its easy to identify a triple 7 by looking at the landing gear. They call it. The nickname port because it 6. Underneath each for the main landing gear, of course, is the main landing gear. One of these tires selloff. And then the nose gear ive never heard of a main landing gear tire fall off on takeoff. The only tire issues ive ever heard is of nose gear collapse or a nose gear that blows out when landing. Because when the nose comes down, if it comes down to abruptly, it will blow out the nose gear. So a landing gear tire falling off on takeoff is something that is obviously very unusual and concerning and im sure the faa and ntsb is going to be taking a very close look at what happened to you. So as were looking at, we all sorts of different videos that were showing our viewers as were talking hear some of that showing the plane taking off, you can actually see the tire coming off. I know there has to be a lengthy investigation to figure out why. But was it just not secured properly like what would lead a tire to just fall off of an airplane . Thats the Million Dollar question, justine, that theyre going to try to figure out. One thing to consider is that when airplane is taking off, particularly a big jumble plane like a triple 7 with just one of the largest commercial airplanes out there. Its leaving San Francisco going to japan. Thats a long flight across the ocean. Its full of passengers. Its full of baggage. Full of fuel. So its the heaviest that plane is going to be during the course of the entire flight is on takeoff. So thats when you have the most weight put on the tires and the landing gear is on takeoff. By the time it gets to japan, its burned substantial amount of fuel and its much lighter. So when it it, its a lot less stressful. And, you know, unless its a hard landing, but a typical landing, its a lot less stressful on the landing gear. So the question is, what kind of stress was there on this landing gear at takeoff . Was there some wear and tear and the landing gear that because something too to break down and caused that higher itself to fall off. Were tired of blowout. Like i said, thats not incredibly unusual. It doesnt happen often, but it does happen. But for a tired actually fall law. That is whats unusual. And ken, were just now getting some a confirmation that this tire that fell off this a united boeing triple 7 did land at the employee parking lot and it damaged some cars. So several cars or damage. Now after this tire has fallen off. So you could just imagine that this how i dont you maybe, you know, at that point, if youre looking, if you can see the video, how many feet up in the air, the plane would be at that point that a tire thats big enough for a plane like this. Then following that many feet down landing on cars. You if a piece of a baseball can do some damage just imagine what a airplane tire would do. So were working to get some video now into our newsroom showing that damage. We have confirmed that some cars were damaged at an employee parking lot. If you are on this plane with the pilot have. Said Something Like im sure and some like red light went off in the cockpit being like, you know what . You lost attire. There must be some warning that the pilots got about this. But as we watch the video that the tires continue, then to go up into the belly of the plane. There doesnt seem to be any stopping in what goes on with the actual take off. What would the pilot the if youre in the cockpit . What would what notifications would you be getting that somethings going wrong . Well, i ive never flown a trip, theres a lot of that. I can answer. But basic you know, knowledge. I would say that, you know, you that plane probably does have some sensors are pretty sophisticated. That would indicate theres a failure in the landing gear system. Now the reason you want the landing gear to go up is because its the last dragon on the plane so that it can fly easier. And then, you know, hopefully we can put the landing gear back down when you need to land. Also, as i mentioned, is the heaviest is going to be so. Chances of it. Kind of turning around and going back and landing at sfo right away. May not be the safest thing to do because its still full of fuel. Still very happy. And you could have, you know, a Compromise Landing situation there. So. What might have happened in this is pure speculation on my part is that they decided to head to lax. I guess hes said is Something Like 20 minutes after take off that they determined that there changing course. And by doing that, they have an opportunity released some fuel over the ocean and and that fuel typically dissipates into the air and doesnt actually land on the water, but they can lighten the load. They can get rid of some fuel. They can talk about that. Figure out exactly what their situation is and and have an understanding of okay. We have one tire gone. You have 6 fires. Now we have 5 on one side of your landing gear. That shouldnt be a major problem unless failure of that tire. Its some other damage to other tires in the land thinking which they dont know, you know, until they land. Yeah. And the and the runways at x are are very long. We have a lot of space to land. So and they have, you know, a big Ready Response team down there. Im sure they had the First Responders on standby. Probably fire trucks are out. You know, next to the runway as it came in. So, you know, to me that thats what would make sense that they would probably lighten the load it down there and make a, you know, make a normal landing and everything hope for the best and it sounds like thats what happened. Im just going to a little recap here, ken and i have a question for you on the other side here. This is video now into the kron 4 newsroom showing us a united triple 7. It pdid land safely at one 15 thi afternoon. The runway at sfo where this plane took off from was closed briefly to clear some debris. But it did reopen. I have not heard any information so far about any delays or cancellations at sfo because of this. There were 249 people on board too. On 135 customers. 10 flight attendants for pilots and the plane is designed according to united to land safely with missing or damaged tires and kens. Talking to us here. Hes up and aviation experts out. Give you that title here today. Can is lax. The best option for landing. Youre saying that its just had too much fuel since this plane was set set to go to japan. So thats a long flight. So a lot of fuel on board. A lot of passengers, probably lot of weight with it. So trying to let go of some of that fuel is lax. The best option . I dont know. I would say it. Its obviously one of the best equipped airports on the west coast because largest that most busy airport on the west coast for commercial their traffic. So and and i just want to make sure that were were not jumping ahead of ourselves. I dont know for sure that it dumps fuel, but im thinking possibility there are a lot of runways in california that can handle a big heavy aircraft in an extreme emergency. There are a lot of options. The Old Castle Air Force base is right outside of said. Thats where he 52 used to take off from. Those are huge planes with a lot of weight and they need really long runway. Those runways for well over 10,000 people on you know, which need for blaine this size to land and and and even Edwards Air Force down by palm that where the Space Shuttle use the land. I mean, there there are really good options that are fairly close by for a pilot, but they all dont have all the resources at lax as with the fire response and all of that. So i think it just made sense that gave them time to assess the situation after they realized on takeoff from sfo that they had a missing tire and they had some time to slowdown, figure things out. You know, you got it. Think things through thats what the bestuoptions. Im sure they were talking air Traffic Control the time and probably talking to United Airlines as well on whats the best option for them to do so. Yeah, im sure there are a lot of conversations being had us to like. How can we get this plane . And all these people on board down safely. And weve just seen so many incidents recently of issues happening on airplanes. We had that door plug blow off recently were watching this tire. Now come off here from this plane that took off at sfo. I mean, how what does this say to you about the just the manufacturing process, the safety protocols for putting plans up in the air. Well, you know, theres an old saying if it comes from the military kind of filtered out into the aviation world is called attention to detail. I mean, its one of those things where you can have very sophisticated pieces of equipment a lot of moving parts. A lot of automation nowadays with computer assistance and all of that. The human factor is you have to get every detail, right . You have to follow the guidelines, follow the protocols on installation and maintenance of equipment and you cant get through it. There checklist for all of these things said are going on all the inspections that theyre supposed take place. How an airplane can get a clear to fly with bolts missing from a be on obviously somebody didnt follow a checklist and go back and do the proper inspections. Thats just basic aviation and and mechanical safety in general. So that i just want to one thing, justin, about that tire coming off landing and parking lot. I mean, those tires, i dont have an exact specifications in front of me. But if you went out to stand next to a park. Triple 7 and stood next to the main landing gear. That tire would probably be up around your chest. Theyre really big tires may be even higher than that. And you know, you have stories of legular car tires and truck buyers coming up on a freeway and causing damage and injury and even death. So you can imagine a huge plane. I are like following ms. I i know how i was maybe 100 feet or more, but it was taking off. But the speed of it coming down and and kuz also getting kind of a horizontal motion as well as falling down from the theres a lot of force coming out of that so its really were working to get some video in to our newsroom to share with our some of what ive seen already. This is 5. 80, westbound where in san leandro right in front of where this investigation is taking place. Im going zoom on in because officers here are focusing their investigation on the and here right off the shoulder here. So what we know, we just got an update from chp. The incident started sometime in the mid morning when Pleasanton Police chased a murder suspect and ended up on a chase here on 5. 80, a standoff ensued for about 30 minutes that the suspect crashed the vehicle here and died from an apparent selfinflicted gunshot wound. As you can see, theyre still coming. The evidence here. We have investigators that we have the Coroners Office here for the Alameda County sheriffs and then as you can see, theres just that we have investigated remembering area just in front of where these people are standing up for. That said an is. The suspect vehicle here to stop shoulder there. So where the situation is right now. Lanes one and 2 will remain closed here on 5. 80, for the next several hours as they conduct their investigation. Now, at one point, traffic shut down. As you could see, some lanes are open here. So were both directions. But its going to take some time until they open this back up. So that is the situation here. As for that murder investigation, were told Pleasanton Police will be handling that part of the investigation. Just thank you so much. So were working to get some information as far as so after this tire landed, we do understand it landed at an employee parking lot and to damage some cars. We have several reporters now at sfo gathering. New details for us and well bring you their reports as soon as we can. Weve also learned that a lawsuit has been filed against the San Jose Sharks organization in connection with alleged abuse of a minor by a former coach kevin witt near was arrested in november of 2023 and charged with 30 felony counts. He worked for the sharks in their Junior Hockey team program. Kron fours terisa stops. He reports now this lawsuit spells out a troubling series of allegations against the professional organization. Absolutely tragic situation. You know, young boy being taken advantage of by coach. Mark bacevich is an attorney representing the family and child at the center of a civil lawsuit against this man. Kevin whitmer and the San Jose Sharks when there was a coach for the junior sharks, Youth Hockey Organization last november, santa clara prosecutors charged with murder with 30 felony counts of abuse and 20 counts of possession of child. There was a another plant, a parent that raises concerns about how he was using his position as coach to really, you know, control the athletes in an unhealthy way. Boss covid says on multiple occasions, parents reached out to complain to the sharks organization. About observing whitmer demonstrating disturbing behavior with young players. So there were a lot of red flags, some of which were raised to the organizations. Some of them were kind of the open that you should expect that organization would have to tack to it if it were properly supervise and its coaches and its athletes. Also, bacevich says that the suit alleges the organization failed to follow. National youth guidelines by allowing whitner to be alone with minors in the sharks. Locker room. The unique issue to hockey and there were coaches over the years that have done similar kind of things in locker rooms. And so thats why usa hockey, but this in place and force it on its clubs and this is the situation of were club just decided to ignore it knew better. The suspect as police are telling us, then took their own life. 2 lanes remain closed right before the benedict drive this in san leandro again, some of the lanes are now back open in the west and eastbound direction. Today in oakland, Community Organizers hit the streets cleaning up homeless encampments Illegal Dumping kron fours Philippe Djegal says that the group wants to show the people of the community, the power that they really have. Cleaner neighborhoods, safer working with the unhoused residents and to get this done. Armed with shovels, brooms and pride for the town. Crews meet up to pick up trash for the last 3 weeks. Weve been really intensely focused on cleaning up the sitter founded community, ready core, a local Grassroots Group that for decades has provided security in neighborhoods, held food giveaways and most recently has been conducting an Illegal Dumping cleanup blitz in oakland. As part of its Good Neighbor program, focusing the past few days on the western part of town. You dont get any funds from the City Community organization with independently funded. And were doing this on 6 months ago. Fox as crc raised funds for and purchased a large garbage truck since then, fox says it has collected more than 10 tons of trash. The group even stopped by state goal delhi this week and helped clean up the mounds of trash that piled up in front of the business. You have so many people talking about whats wrong with and yes, there are problems. But in our communities that been problems for a long time. And when when it weve stood up. But bonded together. And worked out situation. The deli has been a years long standoff with the city about paying the excess litter fee. Most food businesses are obligated to pay annually to fund dumping cleanups. This year in particular, it comes at critical time for the Biden Administration and for Biden Campaign as he tries for reelection in 2024. Biden swept states that helped democratic primaries and caucuses on super tuesday. Earlier this week and former President Trump did the same on the gop side. He won all but one state and his primary rival nikki haley dropped out shortly after. So all that to say thats the backdrop as biden takes the state of the and podium this evening. So a couple things to look out for, like you mentioned are which topics he hits on from, you know, hot headlines of the day. Whether thats immigration at the southern border, which has been the subject of much contention on capitol hill. Were ukraine war on going. But you brings ongoing war with russia. Were the war between israel and hamas in the middle east and President Biden announced today that he plans to announce at the state of the union that hes directing u. S. Military to help open a port along coast of gaza to help facilitate a need for palestinian civilians. Gather been calls for him to do something. So hes going to use this platform. This evening to say that he is doing something in years past, though, theres been a lot of heckling of the president while hes delivering the state of the union. Weve seen shouting ripping of papers. Are you expecting Good Behavior tonight . Well, you know, couple things to look out for is whether or not biden, you know, directly engage as members of congress and whether he makes a direct mention of like i said, both biden and trump are at this point poised for a general election match and the state of the union speech isnt a campaign addressed by. Im brian will probably want to tout his administrations accomplishments through. Hes ready for another 4 years in the oval office. Pete, his administration rally in stark contrast to that of his predecessor as battles with trump as we head toward november here. And then Something Else to to keep an eye out for you know, the Biden Administration has seen some pretty lackluster polling numbers over the last few weeks. Will want to, again, you know, stress what his administration is already accomplished while pointing toward the future and what still needs to be done. Dan, whats the very latest well, you know, we can tell you that this flight to united 35 left here from San Francisco international terminal, all was going well, except just after takeoff. It lost its wheel as we know that wheel fell into an employee parking lot just north of the airport as a result, many cars were damaged. Now, heres what we can tell you about. This flight was due to go to osaka, japan. Instead, it diverted to lax were landed safely and theyre now looking for another plane to get those folks to osaka, japan. Now we spoke with an Airline Expert about this. He believes that the plane was diverted to lax as opposed to years so that light could drop some fuel on the way down there says its very important that with planes that begin again, this was a boeing 7. 77, that you have all the wheels to land. But that plane did land with tire less landed safely. Now the real question is how could this happen . We talked to a retired United Airlines pilot. Hes been complaining that maintenance an aircraft has been shipped overseas. And as a result, its not what it used to be. However, oftentimes tires are replaced at local airports like here at sfo are other reports throughout the nation. Something happened with that was tire replaced and it was not connected properly. Those are things that the investigators are going to be looking at. I guess the key thing to keep in mind is is that this plane, it landed safely a passengers uninjured least from the early indications we have nobody injured when that wheel fell in that employee parking lot. Best kept secret for the past 14 years, sonya youth has been bringing back the music now as the ceo of music for minors, a nonprofit in the bay area. Shes trying to change the lives of students through music. I felt a lot of people need to know about this under her leadership. The program has expanded and is now in schools across the peninsula, spanning from south San Francisco to san jose growing from 7,000 kids. A 26,000 students and 13 School Districts with the majority of their work focused on underrepresented communities. Knew that to have a greater impact we needed to do kind of districtwide because its really important to us that all kids have the opportunity. So we do core music, education elementary move focus on elementary because thats where the biggest void programs or money well. Then use as a great example of seeing this program in motion is at Jason Dahl Elementary School in san jose where for now the program is fully subsidized. And has been going on for the past 3 years.
