He is at the Voter Registration charles has been busy there to that. Yeah, its really picking up, especially here in the noon folks really start to show up on their lunch breaks. And as we head into the afternoon, more people probably come to vote when they get done with work. Lets going take a look at some video now. If you come to the Elections Office here in san mateo this afternoon. You can either going to drop off your ballot person or theres a drivethru you can go through there and drop if your video or drop off your vote through the drivethru is. Well, a lot of folks here, the staff of been getting ready for today. The been sending out a ballot boxes and staff all across the county to different polling places and a lot of equipment. Welcome back. A little later today when they can start counting those votes. Now, this, of course, is just the beginning of the election season. Weve got months and months of campaigning, but especially for senate race here in california. Also for the president ial race headed into november. So i asked a few folks today if they were ready for what will probably be a long and arduous election season. Gavin newsom voted in person at the California MuseumVoting Center just south of the State Capitol in sacramento today he arrived with the first partner, Jennifer Siebel newsom, the to casting their ballots before heading back to the State Capitol. One of the Big Questions this super tuesday is what will voter turnout be . Election officials across the bay area and the state are reporting low Voter Registration numbers today during kron 4 news at noon, i spoke with the Contra Costa CountyRegistrars Office who said at last check only 17 of ballots have been turned in. They say there are a number of reasons that that could be leading to low voter turnout for this primary election. Its hard to interpret right. It could be any number of things where, you know, in california, we do. We have dealt with this, you know, movement of that calendar itself between june in march, people thinking that their f e vote doesnt matter, which is something that every day we try to fight fight that narrative. But we are seeing a higher than usual number of adjudications as were as were scanning ballots because of some right hands. And so that could be interpreted that people are wanting to have different choices. Contra costa voting Officials Say they have tried to encourage voter turnout in the younger demographic, which is the 18 to 24 yearolds. Even started a tiktok account to promote voting. There are also 4 dozen students helping out as poll workers in Santa Clara County, dozens of Election Officials are processing ballots that are coming in on super tuesday after getting off to a slow start. The county says they are expecting a flood of ballots to arrive before the end of the day. Today. Trends in these years have grown to wear ballots. The large, large amount coming in at the very end. So weve only got about 15 turnout as of yesterday morning. I think received over 30,000 in the mail yesterday. Well get updated numbers this morning. So ive received anywhere from 100 to 250,000 ballots on election day. In the past. So im hoping for a high turnout today. County Election Officials also reminding residents in case they forgot to register to vote. They can do that at any Voting Center in the county so they can participate in todays election. The polls close at 8 oclock tonight, california voters will only decide one statewide ballot measure today. Thats proposition one. Its a 6 billion dollar bond measure that would reform the Mental Health system in our state. Which spend more state money on housing and programs for Homeless People living with Mental Illnesses or Substance Abuse problems that would create more than 26,000 drug and Mental Health treatment beds. If approved, it would overhaul. How are state spends money on the homelessness crisis critics say it will divert billions of dollars away from Mental Health services that are working. It is one of the most important days in the president ial voting cycle. Us americans are heading to the polls today. 16 states and one territory holding primary contests and that state state more than onethird of the total delegates in both the republican and democratic primaries. President joe biden is not facing any major competition in the democratic president ial primary and for the republican primary, former President Trump can pretty much wrap things up for the republican nomination with a strong showing today. And our washington correspondent, Raquel Martin will have a live report on the president ial primaries. Thats coming up a little bit later on at 2. 30, this afternoon. So join us tonight for all those live results from all around the bay area, the state and the country. A special edition of kron for news will begin tonight at 8 in prime time. Were talking about our forecast now. Gray day looking here across the Golden Gate Bridge towards the north bay. Kyle is tracking the weather for us now in the clouds are winning. Yeah, they are still winning today again, election day, a little cloudy, but at least our roads are relatively dry. We do have a few sprinkles out there. No doubt about it. And in fact, some of us have actually seen some decent rain over the last 24 hours about hamilton got about half an inch, cant field about threetenths little over a quarter and point raise notice a lot of the stuff in the north bay, santa rosa just under a quarter of an inch. But not a whole lot in San Francisco. You can 2, 1, hundredths of an inch in orinda barely anything in the south bay. We really havent gotten any any trace of rain. So whats going on here is we have High Pressure out the pacific and we have lowpressure closer to us now. Ultimately that High Pressure will be the thing that will give us a break. But today you can see this low pressure system funneling all this moisture mostly to the north north of us are really just catching some of the clouds from that system. And as we zoom in here, you can see again a few light showers rolling across in the north bay. But the rest of us pretty much just dealing with the cloud cover. And thats the way will say, at least until we get to tomorrow and then things are going to change up a little bit tomorrow. Youre going to need that umbrella 30 Miles Per HourHalf Moon Bay can see 14 in haywards or a little breezy out there, too. It is a very predominantly souther for southerly flow. So that wind coming from the south temperatures are a little below average, although spots like, hey, were getting up to about 62 at this hour. But notice, you know, you had to delay and were only at 55 and were pretty much in the heat of the day. So a little bit below average. So tonight we are going to see those clouds continue and were going to see that shower chance start to increase as we get into the overnight hours now, that will mean that our temperatures wont be too chilly tonight. So again, looking out for those 40s for those of you our inland valleys. But were all the need that umbrella tomorrow because that chance of rain is going up. Ill be back in a little bit. Well talk more about that. Back to you. Thanks, kyle. We have some stir bing details that are coming to light this afternoon about a missing persons case that turned into a Homicide Investigation in san pablo. Last september, a police were called about a missing 40 yearold and her 74 yearold mother. And yesterday, the 40 yearold husband was charged with their murder kron fours. Tiffany justice joins us now live from the San Pablo Police department with the very latest details. Thanks for joining us. Right. Just seen a very sad story here. Now to School Age Children are without a mother and their grandmother. Their father being charged with their as of yesterday, the District Attorneys Office did file formal charges. 2 counts of murder with a special enhancement against our suspect, a mister monday, the contra costa District Attorneys Office charging 40 yearold foot vo. With a double homicide of his 40 yearold wife. And her 74 yearold mother tran. This disturbing crime coming to light last september when police were first alerted by vo that his wife and motherinlaw were missing. Mister vogt told officers they left in their family vehicle after a family argument, you know, mister vo occurred. You know, detectives detectives noticed he know it a discrepancy. And in what he was telling investigators and then, you compared against actions. Vo said the 2 women were last seen driving a 2017 honda fit to Southern California after a family argument on december 5th. This is what detective saw vo driving his wifes reportedly missing car in oakland. He was actually seen entering the and driving off on it, moving the car and parking in a different location. Subsequently, you know, an arrest warrant was issued for mister bo detectives served a search last known location. The victims residence. Police say through evidence gathered from the search warrant, they had direct involvement in the disappearance and murders of his wife and motherinlaw. Detectives are still searching for the locations of the victims remains. He hasnt been forthcoming with to to help investigators call upon the we working very hard to follow up on on leads in order to, you know, determine, you know, to to find out more answers and really bring our victims and the families. Now, San Pablo Police also tell us that those 2 children are with family, but this is an ongoing investigation. Theyre encouraging anyone with information to contact their investigations. Division reporting live to be just as kron. 4 news. Tiffany, thank you. Before deputy shot in Sonoma County are still recovering from their injuries today. According to investigators yesterday, deputies responded to reports of a man holding a rifle just outside of santa rosa. They got into a car chase with that suspect before a shootout started, investigators say one deputy was shot in the leg to had hand injuries. And one deputies in Critical Condition from a head injury. The gunman crashed on stony point road and then died. The shooting in the crash are now under investigation by the Santa Rosa Police department. The Sonoma CountySheriffs Office says body camera footage worn by the deputies will be released. But it did not say when San Leandro Police say they have arrested a man they believe is responsible for shooting and injuring a fouryearold boy. This happened last wednesday afternoon and west want to avenue about a block away from that Safeway Grocery store in the area. Police responded to a call about a shooting at a multiunit home where they found the boy inside with a gunshot wound to the leg. Investigators say that the suspect is an oakland resident, adam johnson, and he was allegedly shooting into the home next door. One of the bullets went into the home of the 4 yearold instead of johnsons intended target. So now hes been charged with 2 counts of attempted homicide. The boy was treated at the hospital for nonlifethreatening injuries. More than 20 million registered voters in california received a ballot in the mail. But so far, just 2 and a half million have been returned. Thats according to a Voter Information Service that tracks ballots and voter trends. So that means the statewide turnout so far is just an 11 . And political experts are expecting turnout to improve throughout the day. So a reminder, if you want to vote, you can drop off your ballot at any local Polling Center or you consented in the mail just has to be postmarked by today. So lets talk about how this voter turnout is going to impact the results of todays election with Sonoma State UniversityPolitical Science professor david mcewan. Thanks for coming lets start with the voter turnout numbers. We have numbers from marine sonoma. All the counties contra costa under 20 for voter turnout so far. What do you make of that . What a voter enthusiasm like . Why are they not engage . Sure. We dont see a lot of sizzle on many of the things on the ballot so far, right. Theres that u. S. Senate race. There are things happening locally, but there hasnt been that many that havent been that many things to really draw voters. Theres also a big difference between voters who are 65 and older. They should about 25 of the electorate and those voters that are say 18 to 34 and that demographic is about 25 as well. The younger demographic not showing urging voters not really enthused and older voters obviously showing up voting twice and they have the opportunity. We talk with contra costa and their Election Officials at noon today. And they said they set up a tiktok account in order to reach that demographic. Theyre trying to reach the kids where they are to encourage them to let them know, you know that their vote counts. Yeah. I mean, if you look at whats happened in National Elections like president ial elections in november, we dont expect this pattern to repeat itself. But this is an early primary. Theres a march primary, not a june primary. And again, not that many races there. And so kind of the long run way up into the november election will give voters of different groups excited. That will be something to watch. And donald trump is a turnout machine. Midterm turnout in 2018 was the highest we have since since 1914. It was high in 2022. 2020 was the largest, our highest turnout in a president ial election. We have seen in several cycles. Im kind of surprised at the open u. S. Senate seat is not a big draw to get people out there. Do you think that steve garvey is going make the top 2 . It looks like garbage is going to be in the top 2. Now, look whether hes hes in first place. That will be one of the major stories tonight. Second place. Obviously a important because of those republicans coming out really to vote for donald trump. Nonetheless, hes got a hard time being successful in november. If hes a silver medalist tonight, hes still going to be a silver medalist in november. So hell be because i think people are confused theyre looking at their ballot like why am i voting on a u. S. Senate person twice . Its wants to finish the term others to take the full to take the full term. Thats why you see that. So do you think people will split their vote . Can you do that . Can you vote . I want to finish in one to go all the way you there are some voters that game it out that way. We dont that that makes much of a difference. But there will be some voters and that will be split household, right . You know, married couples may start to dress the same, but they dont necessarily start to vote the same over time. Thats true. All right. We do have open house seat and there are 11 candidates running. This is to represent silicon valley. What are you watching so if we look at that particular seat, who is going to take the mantle of an issue, what that looks like moving forward. Theres a generational change going on within the Democratic Party in california. Obviously the Dianne Feinstein senate seat, but also a series of house seats. You have term limits hitting. The California Legislature starts in 2024. Accelerate and 2026. Where more than half the legislature will be leaving because of term limits. That means were going to see a lot more de monde embraces a in a in a deeply blue state and what that looks like moving forward, a new type of down at the democrat, a new generation of that you see more akin to say. Gavin newsom, kamala harris, as opposed to say that older generational kind of subset thats been running in california politics for so long. So lets talk about the president ial primary tonight. Right . Sort of seems like. Former President Trumps got it unlock. Hes going to. Wrapping up tonight. What is nikki haley doing . Shes going back to south carolina. Do you think she will concede tonight . Drop out of the race . What her plan . Alright, key question does nikki and nikki haley . Will she win a state as she possibly could when utah that state has gone Different Directions for republicans over time. But she needs to book a state. She needs to win the state. Does she drop out tonight or does she drop out tomorrow or continue . Thats the drama here. And by going back to south carolina, she signaling that she has some announcement to make that i think is an important element. What happens in north donald trump will sew up the republican nomination sometime this month because almost 80 of all of republican delegates are selected by the end of this month. So he will cement that nomination. And what does it look like for uncommitted and joe biden . We saw that as an in michigan last week that we see that in washington or in minnesota and colorado, some of the other states. Those are watching that we watch l be anything else. Got your attention tonight. Walk. Whats going what were going to do is close attention to proposition one. The only ballot measure thats on the ballot and whether or not that goes down. If that goes down, that could be a real difficulty for gavin newsom. A moving forward. We will see a lot of ballot measures on the november ballot. It will be the first billion dollar ballot that we see and that regard. So we want to watch whats going on with that particular ballot measure because it could have a Ripple Effect head into november. And youre part of our panel tonight. Good looking around. I do get to be part will get to hear some of your analysis is all those results. Start to come in tonight during our primetime coverage that starts to date week. You and thanks for coming in person. Thank you very love they look good in real life to home. Good. All right. Still ahead, were going take a look at where things stand. In the California Senate race. Also, how met is roads across the state are still under repair from all that Winter Storm Damage highway 9 in Santa Clara County remains closed to an unstable hillside. The closure is between sanborn and Redwood Gulch road. Its unclear when this could reopen. So were taking a live look here outside see whats going on. Cross the building here. Theres and weve got a lot of clouds out there today was kind of a drizzly gray morning and its kind of a drizzly it is. But today well stay kind of drizzly and gray overnight tonight start to see these rain chances ramp up a little bit. Thats why tomorrow im saying. Youre going want to bring that umbrella, everybody because we have a much bigger chance of showers, particularly in the afternoon as we get into tomorrow. So today tonight, yeah, its a little bit cloudy out there, but certainly we just have that slight chance of a shower tomorrow. Thats the one im looking out for that. Get really nice break thursday into friday. So lets look at the big picture here and just show you weve got that low pressure system. Its going to track to the south and then over to the east. So this is tomorrow afternoon as this happens, that counter clockwise circulation is going to throw a few showers our way. And then you can see by thursday. Then we start to get some nice clearing in there. And that really holds for us for friday. Now, is there another system coming our way saturday . Yes, there is. It doesnt look like its a big rainmaker, but it will bring a little moisture. And then you can see again, they kind of keep rolling these systems. I think next week, potentially that one monday tuesday, that one could bring a little more snow and rain. But as far as today is concerned, this is over, looking out for for totals. And even if i take you into tomorrow, when i was saying bring the umbrella, theyre not huge totals. But certainly there are some spots that will get between a quarter and a half an inch of rain. I think, you know, the coastal mountains up in the north bay are more likely to see the higher totals, but just be ready for this tomorrow, both for your commute. And also just if you could be walking around, have that jacket and that umbrella ready, temperatures are all going to be changing over the next few days will be warming up. So thats kind of a bonus. This is berkeley is an example. You can see that peaks on friday. Before then we pull back again on saturday as we start to look out for a little more rain. Current temperatures out there right now. Were in the 50s with a few 60s out there. But for the most part, a pretty mild day. Not surprising, of course, because weve got the clouds out there. Heres a look at your extended forecast tomorrow. Take the umbrella thursday. Well start to catch a break. Friday looking gorgeous. And then saturday, a few showers for the 1st half of our weekend. Back to i love that. Raquel, how significant are tonights results . This is the most significant night for voters since the start of this election cycle. It could very well determine if this is the beginning of the end for nikki haley and those start of a gensral election rematch between President Biden and former President Donald Trump. But if you believe the polls, haley is in for a disappointing night. The polls say former President Donald Trump is leading haley by 50 to 70 depending on the state and is already looking forward to a rematch against President Biden beating. President biden in almost every poll, President Biden is painting a different picture the last guys on but faces some opposition within his own party. I voted im committed tuesday. More voters are promising to follow michigans lead where more than 100,000 people voted uncommitted. The protests over the president s handling of the war in gaza. Political analyst tom belts as super tuesdays results, well provide fresh insight about what voters are thinking and it may be haleys last 2 wrong in all likelihood, were probably looking at the end of the Haley Campaign after super tuesday. Now over the weekend, haley vowed to stay in this race as long as they remain competitive. But notably her campaign did not put anything on her schedule starting tomorrow. Were now in washington, Raquel Martin, back to recall, what could tonights results mean for the balance of power in congress . Well, there are certainly a lot of important races taking place across the country that could help determine or give us the First Insight about what the balance of power will be in both the house and the senate most significantly. All eyes are on a competitive race there in california for has laid the late senator Dianne Feinstein and senator seat. Of course, the former speaker of the house, Kevin Mccarthys house we know there are republicans going head to head there to try to fill that hole. Recalled. More live for us from washington, d. C. Thank you so much. Well, its most expensive u. S. Senate race in the history of california. The candidates who finished first and second after todays vote will move on to the general election in november. Democratic congressman adam schiff was in burbank speaking to a crowd of supporters, uraing them to vote and taking a final shot at one of his opponents. The republican and former baseball star steve garvey. That we make sure her that that onetime first baseman who is now playing in deep, deep, deep, far, far right field never gets anywhere near the u. S. Senate. Schiff has been running tv ads that have elevated garbage profile, pointing out that garvey voted for trump. The ideas that garvey will be easier to beat in november than fellow democrat katie porter. In a recent poll, garvey has a slim lead over ship with porter. Theyre in 3rd place. And representative barbara lee of oaklands and forth. Porter has called shift strategy a political game and garvey has run kind of a low Profile Campaign with a lot without a lot of specific proposals. He says california has been dominated by democratic politicians for too long. This got to be a better way. This got to be somebody who can stand up with a common sense voice with compassion to build consensus. And a baby turn this the state of california around that for maybe a generation has had only one voice. Congresswoman porter cast your ballot this weekend in orange county. She says she would be a different kind of senator who is willing to stand up to wall street. Big oil, big pharma and big insurance and their lobbyists who dominate washington. And the only democratic elected official running in this race who has never taken corporate pac money. That makes me different. My vote is not for sale. Nobodys vote. In our Nations Capital should be for sale. And thats something that i think appeals to democrats, republicans and independents. Representative lee visited a Polling Center to her alma mater, san fernando high school. This was yesterday. She was trying to get the vote out. She says if elected she would fight for people who are struggling. As someone whos had many experiences of being on public assistance. Lowincome taking my children to class didnt have enough resources for childcare. I know what it takes to fight for those who havent been seen and who dont have those resources. A reminder when you vote for a Senate Candidate today, if you have not already voted, youre actually voting in 2 separate contests. One of them is for the very short term to fill the office from november. This year to january of next year. The other contests, as for the full sixyear term that begins in january. Join us tonight for all those live results from around the bay area, the state and the country. We have a special edition of kron. 4 news begins tonight at 8 in prime time. Governor gavin newsom has activated the States National guard to support the firefighting operations in texas. The 146 airlift wing thats based out of the Channel Islands will head to the Lone Star State for the next couple of weeks to fight the fire from the air since the flames broke out last monday. The Smokehouse Creek fire has burned more than 1 million acres across the texas panhandle. Cooler weather and changes in the wind. Pan or patterns could help out now with the containment as well. And hundreds of texas homes have been destroyed by these wildfires. Were learning many of them are not insured. Ranchers also lost cattle to the fires. We get more now from news nation. Stephanie haines. This has been the sentiment over the past few days is just the Community Helping each other out. And this really tough time. Whats going on behind me . Ranchers from far away as far away colorado far waze fort worth, texas are driving in and donating these bales of hay for the ranchers here in the panhandle who have lost everything and really need to feed all of their animals, their horses and their cattle ranchers have been particularly impacted here in the panhandle by those fires about 85 of the states cattle comes from this area. And weve witnessed people drive from all over to donate these bales of hay chance. Bowers operates, x crossed x ranch, a few miles away from where im standing. And he says he expects to lose at least 250 of the 1000 cattle across its 3 ranchs. Ive spent last years building this cowherd a overnight . But what weve been very blessed, very fortunate that the were only gonna lose 200. I can tell you just from data from the Forest Service that firefighters have really been making progress in suppressing in containing some of the fires in this area in the panhandle. That one fire the Smokehouse Creek fire that has burned more than a million acres still remains at 15 contained. But firefighters in the other fires that, you know, 55 , even 80 . Contains. So they really are holding the line will continue to watch that as time goes on here. Were also watching the weather. It is dry. It is breezy, but forecasters are hoping for rain in the next few days. Stephanie hayes reporting for us now. Kyle is in the Weather Center with a look at whats going on in texas. They were saying less wind. Thats good. Yeah. But it doesnt look like theyre going to have warmer temperatures and higher wind for the next couple of days. And then some rain on the way as they head towards the weekend. So still some very tough weather to be dealing with. And you can see where some of that heat is. Dallas right now at 78 degrees. Obviously, you know, were very cold. He had up to north dakota. Thats the cold air is with the jet stream there. You can see the divide with that warmer air is allowed to come in from the gulf and thats what kind of happens when you get these warm and cold air masses coming together is where you get the biggest trouble. And right now you can see that this is moved into a situation where it has spread over to new mexico where they are now under fire danger. And as we zoom in here, you can see its a its a fire weather watch. This is just to the east of taos and that goes throughout the day on wednesday to about 07 00pm. So it is tough going as we take a look at temperatures right looks like theyre theyre theyre there to populate 70s right now in lubbock. And you can see 61 up in amarillo. So its not bad, but certainly that wind and those temperatures are going to stay a little bit warmer than average for the next couple of days. And then towards the weekend, as i mentioned, thats when well see things drop down. And that chance of rain should help to. Right now. We just got some of this moisture streaming in. It really is more clouds than anything else. All of the rain staying mostly to the north of us. But you see a few light showers now rolling through santa rosa. Some of this may not be hitting the ground, but it is its likely sprinkles just enough to keep those roads a little bit slick. So as we go through tonight, again, most of the states to the north of us, you see where that line of showers is and then we get into tomorrow that system starts to move to the south, its going start throwing some showers our way. So this is tomorrow morning, but see in the afternoon. Thats when we get that counter clockwise circulation bringing those showers. And so thats what i would really look out for some of that shower activity. But then we clear out and were looking very nice for thursday and friday. So just be ready for tomorrow. Back to thank you. Coming up here and iconic south bay diners back open after being closed for 4 years. The owner is feeling about coming back. And a painful surprise for one Southern California man when he was bitten by a scorpion at his las vegas hotel. Let him describe what happened. But first, some residents are still trying to dig out after some parts of this year received up to 10 feet of snow. Mountain towns all over california are digging out after a blizzard conditions covered the state over the past few days and more snow is on the way in the higher elevations. Much much better picture today than yesterday. We couldnt see a thing. We look here at diamond peak yesterday. We can see the lake at all. But now you see people out there enjoying the beautiful weather. It is still chilly. 40 degrees in south lake tahoe. 37 in truckee. So definitely see the big no doubt about it. But we have lost a lot of our watches and warnings. You can see tahoe now is clear. We do still have this up until 4 oclock today. That is a winter storm watch, though. That is still up. But it is about to expire. So this is about to go to. And frankly, we really dont have a lot in the pipeline for the sierra right now. So you can see between now and friday. And then we start to get that break up thursday into friday. And then as we get towards next weekend, of course, weve got another system that looks like its going to roll through on saturday. But it does look like a whole lot of rain. So today this is what weve got to pick up and between now and thursday morning. This is what were going to pick up. So its not a whole lot of rain to come. But tomorrow in the afternoon, i think is what were going to see. The bulk of that that will fall between like about a 10th of an inch to a quarter of an inch for most, maybe a little more than that for the north bay thursday. Friday, looking good.
