Kron 4 s Charles Clifford is live for us now in San Mateo County at the Voter Registration charles has been a busy day there today. Are people turning in their ballots are coming to vote in person . Well, both, you know, its im outside the Elections Office here in san mateo. Its been a little bit sleepy this but theyre expecting things to pick up through the noon hours. People are on their lunch breaks. And then later today as folks start to get off of work, lets going take a look at some video here now this morning, the staff was getting ready. They were sending out equipment and trucks to the very poor various polling places around san mateo these orange bags that you see here, these are what will carry the ballots back to this office later today. Each individual bag has a gps tracker and its they keep track of where those bags are. Now, this is a primary you know that the race for the president ial primaries, not a lot of drama expected. Theres pretty much a foregone conclusion who will win those the race for the u. S. Senate candidate here in california. Thats a bit of a more of an unanswered question. And even though the primary ballots today, the voting doesnt quite have the energy of say a general election in november. I talked to several people who say they wanted to vote today because they felt it was their civic duty. Just think its your very important for all of us to take part in it. Why did you feel it was still important . Can just a long family tradition. We we just get up and vote. Its not asking a lot just get up and go vote. All right. Now, if youre one of if you live in San Mateo County and you still want to and you havent registered, it is possible to come down here to the Elections Office. You can do what they call a conditional registration. Drop your ballot off. And then as soon as they verify registration, your ballot, well count. Our coverage now with kron fours will tran. He is at the Santa Clara County register Voters Office. I want to pull back the curtain so you can see democracy at work. So you can see all these workers right now. They are getting the ballots. Theyve been dropped off either by the post office or people voting outside and then the ballots come inside here or from the precincts. People drive them over. Bottom line is they have the ballots. Theyre being opened by the machines and then the workers will flatten them out. There are dozens of workers and they will be working around the clock. Thats step one. Once they do that, then the ballots move over here. This is when basically the rubber hits the road, right . So then they get everything flagged out. It has not been counted yet. Then they come over here and you can see the employees, a lot of them right there, looking through the ballots, then they start counting. Were off to a slow start. According to the registrar of voters were about maybe 15 of mailin ballots so far, its not the sexiest of elections that usually is for president ial elections. But theres still so many things undecided. Usually they get about 20 at this rate. As far as mailin ballots. But its a little bit slow. But of course, the days young. Keep in mind, you can vote at this location regardless of your precinct. If you dont know your precinct to come down to the registrar of voters and youll be allowed to vote. And if youre waking up this morning and you forgot that today is super tuesday, dont worry about it. You can still show up register to vote. They will hand you a ballot and then hopefully youll get everything situated far as the right color. Ink, the boxes, if not, theyll reach out to you a little bit later on and see if you want to clarify your vote. Keep in mind the polls will close at 8 oclock tonight. You have to be in line at that time. You cannot walk into a line at 801, because at that point youre too late to vote. All right. So now lets talk about whats going on in the north bay. As far from sunday, moran and sonoma counties had the highest percentage of mailin ballots returned. At 20 , napa county next at 19 . Then we have Santa Clara County, Alameda County and Solano County below. 15 . Election is today ends and were here mindful of the importance. The imperative of getting out to vote. We have a speciau edition of kron. 4 news tonight. It begins at 8 in prime time. Lets chat about our Weather Forecast for now. Heres a live look across the Golden Gate Bridge and the clouds are winning yet again today. And theres kind of a chance of some drizzles out there. Drizzly results, muscles. I dont think thats the actual term. We call it yes, there is a chance of rain. Some showers out there but you may not see any of them. It depends on where you are. I think the north bay has a bigger chance of it. Lets take a look at the rain totals from last 24 hours, Mount Hamilton got almost an inch of rain. So way up high got plenty of rain. 3 tense in canfield point. Raise just a little over a quarter. Santa rosa just under a quarter of you can see San Francisco just got to 107 inch orinda one onehundredth and spots in the south bay got nothing at all. Some places just getting a trace. So it hasnt been a big rainmaker. If you look way off into the pacific, youll see there is High Pressure and that is ultimately going to bump this low pressure out of the way, want to track south. But right now its still in control. So certainly thats what were seeing. Some of this cloud cover from. And thats where were getting some of this moisture thats rolling in as well. And you can see its mostly saying to the north of us. But what that means is that we still have that shower chance as we go throughout the day today. Were also a little breezy today. The numbers in the teens out at Half Moon Bay now, 17 Miles Per Hour. But cbo, 14 in Mountain View in hayward. So were going up there a little bit little bit more windy than we were yesterday. And temperatures are running cool yet again. That surprising because weve got all the cloud cover out there. But you see rick 57 degrees in downtown San Francisco. We have hit the 60 degree mark there in san jose. And 61 in hayward as far as highs are concerned today, though, for the most part, we will be below average. So these numbers that you see in yellow, thats where we should be this time of year, which is to say San Francisco should be about 62 degrees, which you can see. Were going to be in the 50s today. So a little bit cool. We do have a little more rain on the way tomorrow and then a break. Ill have that your 7 day forecast coming up. All right. Thank you. Those are areas that just get. Inundated with snow. So unfortunately, those are going to take a little bit more time to clean up in first 3 days of march. California may stay drought free through next year. Officials with accuweather say theyre highly confident there will be no significant Drought Conditions this year. Or next year, thanks to all the rain and snow from 2022. To 2023 in those winter seasons and from more of the recent storms, 6 of californias most important reservoirs are currently at or above capacity. All right. Lets talk about our forecast now live. Look at whats going on in tahoe. Dig it out for sure. They got these road plowed here at myers, which is good. Lot of roads, snow there on the side. Kyles tracking the next round. Thats coming our way. A little little rain today and tomorrow. Yeah, theres a whole lot in the way of snow thats left to happen there. At least through this week. It looks like another shot next week. It may be getting a little more snow in the sierra. But right now, lets start whats happening in San Franciscos. We take a live look here at the embarcadero. Still unsettled. Weve got the cloudy skies out there and that slight shower chance as we get to tonight, same story in those chances will kind of increase as we get into wednesday. I think wednesday is the day. You want to take your umbrella with you and then by thursday and friday, were actually looking really good and have some nice weather, a little bit warmer as well coming so this is the Bigger Picture and going to show you have this low pressure system is going to track to the south and thats why we kind of still have the chance of showers today and tomorrow as that system leaves. But then as we get into thursday and friday, as you can see here. Really nice. So we have a really nice break coming our way for both of those days. And we should get some sunshine going. But then by saturday you see another shot and then sunday night to monday and even potentially tuesday. So were staying active. Its just were going to have those breaks and it doesnt look like meant much of this is going to be a big rainmaker. So between now and lets say thursday morning, this is what were looking to pick up now or rather tuesday morning. But as we get into wednesday, thats when were going to pick up a little bit of rain. Thats when we could see between about a quarter of an inch and potentially up to half an inch in the north bay and the north bay will likely be the spot that gets the bigger total. So today, not much tomorrow. Take the umbrella with you for sure. The other part of the story is that our temperatures are going to be trending up over the next couple of days as we take a live look here from the east bay, you can see the clouds out there. But once we start to clear out that thursday to friday, well see temperatures pick up and then it will head back down on saturday as we have a little more rain coming our way. As far as temperatures right now are concerned, we are mostly the 50s just a few, 60 degree. Mark stout, their san jose being one of them. But we are going to run a little bit cooler than we normally would this time of year today. And of course, that has everything to do with the fact that weve got that cloud cover coming in from that low pressure system. Thats right there. And as we zoom in, you can see how are, you know, a bit unsettled. And thats we shall stay. At least today and tomorrow. Me, im taking the umbrella with me tomorrow for sure, because thats what i think were going to really see some of these showers pick up. But boy, what a nice day friday is going to be in thursdays looking pretty good, too. Back to you. Well continue our coverage of super tuesday of speak live with the Contra Costa County registrar of Voters Office to take a look at voter turnout and what you need to do if you have not turned in your ballot yet. We c coverage now is your local election headquarters in the big question today is how is voter turnout on super tuesday . So were joined live now. With christian be connelly, who is from the Contra Costa County registrar of Voters Office. Thank you for joining us here. Appreciate your time. Thank you for having so how is voter turnout in your county . Always like for it to be higher. But we you know, we had 147 polling places open on time this morning at 07 00am i checked a little while ago. We had, you know, a few 1000 check ins so and, you know, well certainly be open until 8. You know, were hoping that we we do an uptick in the turnout because as has been widely reported, weve seen, you know, sort of lower turnout than had been expected for certainly below what we planned for at this point. We did do a little check in with other county is at the top of the hour. And they were all hovering like under 20 so far for turning in a mail in ballot. Is that what youre seeing in contra i mean, right, as a as that, were in the same boat as it just above 17 in contra costa. So what is that telling you about Voter Engagement and enthusiasm . Well, i mean, its its hard. Its hard to interpret right . It could be any number of things where, you know, in california, we do. We have dealt with this, you know, movement of that calendar itself between june in march, it could be an expression of people thinking that their vote doesnt matter, which is something that every day we try to fight fight that narrative because every vote does count, you know, we even we have some very close races here in 2022, some always trying to tell that story that every vote does count. And so we are seeing a higher than usual number of adjudications as were as were scanning ballots because of some right hands. And so that could be interpreted that people or wanting to have different choices. But its impossible as an elected official to possible for me to, to read the tea leaves about what, what what our voters are but i can certainly reassure the public that, you know, we we take the counting very seriously and will make sure that every vote does count at your polling stations 147 of them. Thats a lot throughout the county or maybe its not enough. We can talk about that later. Are you seeing more people coming in person . They want to fill out the ballot in the little box and get the stick or are they already filled out their ballot and theyre handing it over. Were seeing we see both and certainly stood up 5 regional early voting sites, one in each supervisorial district open on friday and i went out and visited all 5 of the sites. In addition to the early voting site we have here at our office. And just when you stand and you watch to see a combination of both folks that have voted on their vote by mail ballot and are just turning it in and want to turn it into a human at a polling place which they can do under the law. They can even vote their vote by mail ballot and they can turn it even without an envelope. Now, you know that theres procedures for that at our polling places. But certainly there are a number of people that want to use those ballot marking devices. Youre so youre seeing that, you know, get some your all of that just now from our our office. What those ballot marking devices look like. And so there are people that want to use the device and then they print their ballot out and then they put it in a secure drop box. So you see you see a combination of of of all of those little of both. What age group are you seeing most engaged in this election . Is that the younger voters, older voters and if you can do anything to encourage either group thats not participating as much. What would you say to them . Yes, certainly wed love to see the turnout in our younger demographic young people. 18 to 24 has been a real priority for our office in our outreach efforts over the last year surrounds part, we stood up a tiktok account were trying to define to to be with voters where they are. And so certainly love to see that increase among the younger voters. You know, were grateful for having a variety. We actually have 48 student poll workers involved in our effort today. Youll have to be 16 to work the polls. And so we think thats an important way to inspire engagement. So my message would certainly be your vote is your voice. And weve got to see everyone express their express their voice and share their voice by voting today. So if someone lost their ballot, if they got a mailin ballot and they lost it. What are their options . And if they still have it at home, theyre like, yes, i should vote does count. What should y they be doing . Like lets try to get these last. Thats that are sitting at home. Get these people the tournament writes, anyone who does have a ballot in order for their vote to count, they have to have completed in a secure drop box by 8 oclock tonight. Thats when we lost all of our 40 secure drop boxes around contra costa. Or they can put it in the u. S. P as long as they have it postmarked by today. And we were if we can receive by march 12 and its postmarked today than that ballot will count if you lost your ballot, you can go to your polling place and poll workers can help you cast a ballot. We have procedures for that now is talking to some friends to i dont know where my ballot is. Does that mean im not a lot. Can do Something Like nominate. Find out. Im sure there are options. There are it. Yes, absolutely. And any any contrast a voter can come to our office as well. Well be our polling place will be up until 8 oclock as well. So what happens after 8 oclock in your office is that when things really start to kick into high gear . Yeah, certainly thats when well run our summary report of are tallying will actually have our first batch of results released shortly after 8 oclock. And that will be the votes that we were able to receive and verify signatures and processed through about midday yesterday. And as the night goes on, we will be reporting at a minimum every 2 hours until we have reported all the results from the 147 polling from today. We we do a central count. We bring all of the ballots back to our office. Use our fastest, most reliable scanning equipment. And so we expect to have our final results released today before midnight. But, you know, depends on how everything goes. But thats the game plan. Sounds like you need some coffee. Kristen. Yes, weve i did start by. I brought donuts. I brought coffee donuts. A democracy go well together and so does caffeine advice. We have found pizza. You throw that in there, too. And thats a winning combination for Election Night success. Does tonight. The challenge today is not that people arent working. The problem is that working harder than ever and still cant afford to get by. Well talk about our weather right now with whats happening on the embarcadero in the clouds are winning today again, kyle is taking a look. Whats going on here in also across the country. Still a have a heat wave. Well, there are parts the country that are seeing some pretty interesting temperature for this time of year. You can see dallas at 79 degrees. Obviously the cold air is definitely up in my not north dakota. But, you know, look at the difference between say chicago, where its 44 in columbus, where its 66. That is the jet stream diving down. Now, this is not been helpful. Were some of the wildfire concern has been in and around the texas panhandle and now into parts of new mexico as well as we take a look here. You can see weve got the potential for some severe thunderstorms in the south, but i want to bring your eye to this. That area in red that is fire danger. And then weve got high wind down the border there between texas and new mexico. But this is so heres amarillo. And if you head over towards the new mexico border and you just east of taos, thats what a the fire weather watch right now until 7 oclock tonight. Now they dont have that in the panhandle and im happy to say theyve got about 37 containment on that fire. That has been so devastating. But temperatures are warming up again over the next couple of days and theyre seeing the winds pick up as well. There do have some rain chances as we get to the weekend and that will cool them down. But, you know, not very easy and firefighters with that right now as we get back to the bay, you can see that stream of clouds rolling in. Thats from the low pressure system that is sitting right off the coast. Thats whats keeping us unsettled. That is why we have to keep an eye out for a stray shower or 2. And it doesnt look like well get a lot of take you into this afternoon and this evening. And you see it is really just mostly cloud cover in any rain staying well to the north of us. We burn our rocket to the republican nomination is been our rock former President Trump remains the republican front runner to poll numbers are very good work. The beating President Biden in almost every poll and President Joe Biden faces no serious challengers day his nomination for the democrats. Were going re elect joe biden and kamala harris. But neither man can clinch their partys presumptive nomination today. The earliest that could happen is march 12 for trump and march 19th for biden in a general election or given a choice in a primary. We make our choice. Heres what looks like outside right now at San Francisco international airport. Kind of gray out there from the shot. Kyle is tracking the weather for us now. Were looking forward to that rain coming up. A sorry, not the raid. Scratch that reverse at the later on this week. Yeah, the sun later on this week. Thats were going to break. I wanted to shake up to tahoe, though, where, you know, were seeing some people out and about now that are able to kind of get out, enjoy the snow. You can kind of see from diamond peak. We could actually see lake tahoe today. So obviously some improvement there. Temperatures also a bit warmer. I mean, we were just chilly yesterday in those low 30s throughout the day. Even 20s now sitting about 40 degrees. Still 37, though, in truckee. So thats not states, not chilly. We do still have a few winter storm watches that are up. They will expire later today. You can see it there north of clear lake. But for in and around tahoe, they are now out of any watches or warnings. Things are winding down, right slowly, but surely which is good because theres some cleanup need that needs to happen. And if you look over the next few days, you can see theres really not a whole lot coming our way. Its staying well to the north of us. As far as snow is concerned. Now we roll into next week. I do think that we will have more of a chance of a little more snow. But for right now, things are quieting down live look outside. You can see at mount tam. Weve got certainly some rain on the camera there, but mostly just clouds across most of area and certainly getting very dark right now in san jose. Up for the most part, were staying dry today, but there is still that chance of a shower that is out there. Temperatures are running a little warmer than yesterday, but still seasonally looks are going to be a little cooler today. We should be up in those low to almost mid 60s. Weve got a breeze going on as a southerly flow. You can see about 14 Miles Per Hour out at the coast and even around the bay in spots like hayward and in Mountain View about 14 Miles Per Hour right now. And as we look at futurecast, so today theres the chance of a shower. Were going to stick that that tomorrow as the system starts to slide to the south, this is where the break starts to come in thursday into friday and we should stay dry. And its a really nice sunshine on friday. By the time we get to saturday morning, were looking out for another system to roll through. But even then, you know, were not looking for huge totals. So this is the rest of today, not much. And then tomorrow, i think that were going to pick up some rain, especially in the afternoon after that, we do start to clear out and really nice warm thursday and friday before we look out for a few more showers coming our way, the 1st half of the weekend.
