Fire Officials Say we need to stay away from the water this weekend. Thanks so much for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 3. Im Justine Waldman are also tracking all the local weather conditions, including whats going on in the sierra where there is a blizzard warning and ski resorts have already decided to close. So were taking a live look now at both the bay area and south lake tahoe. Were going begin now with a check of our conditions. Kron 4 meteorologist kyla grogan in the Weather Center with a look at whats going on and that our radar is lit up this afternoon. Yes, it is. Weve got rain coming in the bay area. Were about to see the next push of some of these showers rolling in and they will be heavy at times. So. Get ready for it. And obviously we also see that sierra snow. It is turned on and cranking right now that snow machine and thats going to be happening all throughout the night tonight, too. So lets zoom in and take a look at our current current temperatures. Im sorry. I heard rain totals here as we take a live look at San Francisco where the the clouds have been lower and you can see some of high elevation rain that has come down over an inch and a half and then loman in mount diablo. But even orinda 3 quarters of an inch over half an inch in santa rosa over 3 tenths in San Francisco and san jose right now seeing some of those showers come down. Were also seeing the winds start to pick up where under a wind advisory and you can see San Francisco now, 29 Miles Per Hour. So this is all part of whats happening with this storm as it rolls through. And this high wind advisory goes through 10 00am on saturday. So between now and then if youre going across anywhere, bridges, youre going to feel that here is a look at whats happening right now or minute check out some of these showers. You can see where the yellows and oranges start to pop up heavier showers. Not right. Making our way through nevado at this hour and certainly a few out to roll right into San Francisco. If you dont have the umbrella out, youre going to want in a few minutes. And san jose is just seeing some really heavy showers roll through 2. I saw the skies darken there. And so theyre seeing, as you can see, showing up on the reflectivity here, some of those that have just passed them by. So i think were all going to be involved in this one. Its all said and done. So if you havent seen the rain yet today, you will. And if you have seen it already are likely to see a little bit more of that as we go through future cast, you can see these lines of storms that could have thunderstorm potential. Well, across the north bay on friday, the rain was sort of hit or but we are expecting more moisture throughout the weekend and many people who had plans to go to tahoe have canceled those plans. On friday, the rain was off and on across marin county and the battle neighbors were going about their business and getting ready for what will probably be a wet weekend. Dont really like being out in the weather. But, you know, we have places to go things to do so until kadi who work. Security said hes not excited about the rain but knows its for the best california. We do need the rain. So and while more rain is on the way over the next couple of days, its not expected to be a major storm here in the bay area. The real action is in the sierra where forecasters are predicting blizzardlike conditions and multiple feet of snow. We were just up in we got out before the rain. Catherine rigo was out running errands friday morning. She says they came back from tahoe just before the weather turned bad. They originally had plans to go back to the mountains this weekend but change their minds after seeing the forecast is going to my sisterinlaw. Were going to leave this afternoon just didnt do. Now shes going to spend the weekend at home so we can do all we can out. Weve a party to go to for my kids. So some Girl Scout Cookies just hunker down. In the north bay, Charles Clifford kron, 4 news. Pg and e says it is upgrading its electric system to improve capacity during storms. Just like this one today, the company is upgrading the system in los altos customers. There are likely to be affected with temporary outages until 4 oclock. In the afternoon. The driverless robotaxi is have just received the ok to expand its operations outside of the city limits of San Francisco, the California Public Utilities Commission now approved ramos planned expansion as far south as sunnyvale. And also to parts of los angeles. Waymo had already received approval from the department of motor vehicles. Various jurisdictions, including san mateo county, have opposed this expansion. They felt that these decisions should be left up to local governments and not to 2 state agencies. There was a bill that was introduced by san jose state. Senator dave cortese. That would put those decisions back into the hands of local lawmakers. However, its unlikely that that bill will be voted on before this fall. So this does not mean that waymo vehicles could start showing up at San Francisco International Airport in time soon because that does require a special permit and approval from sfo. But again, it has just now received the ok to expand outside of the city limits of San Francisco. Some developing news now. A 4th suspect has been charged with the murder in the killing of Oakland Police officer twan lay lay was shot and killed in december while responding to a burglary near Jack London Square suprun russell joins marks. Sanders marquese cooper and alan brown and being charged with las murder. Russell was originally charged with 3 counts of burglary and entering a not guilty plea. Prosecutors believe it was sanders who pulled the trigger killing lay the Alameda County District Attorney pamela price says in part, quote, we will not stop until everyone who participated in his murder. Hes held accountable. The 4 defendants are scheduled for a preliminary hearing on monday. March 4th. There was a tragedy on the tracks and after 10 this morning a caltrain hit and killed the person just after 10 00am near fair oaks lane. Thats right by the post office. The agency says the victim was on the tracks when the train heading from san jose to San Francisco hit them. Its unclear why they were on the tracks. There were more than 100 passengers on board the train. None of them were hurt. Caltrans service was suspended for a short time, but it has now resumed. San Francisco Mayor london breed is touting the reduction in the number of homeless tense on city streets. Those tents occupied by the unhoused fell by 37 in the last quarter. Thats according to the city. In a report, the city says the number of vehicles lived in by an house people dropped. 42 . Mayor says encampment teams helped place 1500 people into shelters last year and got 3,000 people off the streets altogether. Last week, a lawsuit against San Francisco over homeless sweeps was put on hold. Were also learning that San Francisco mayor london breed may be facing yet another challenger and her effort to seek another term. Sources are telling us here at kron 4 that board of supervisors, president aaron peskin well officially enter the race for mayor sometime next week. Kron fours Michael Thomas reports now from the newsroom with the latest details. Theres been no official word from supervisor. Aaron peskin on the launch of his official mayoral campaign. However, sources tell kron 4 we could see that official announcement. As early as next week and the decision to run is partially based off of former San Francisco mayor mark farrell is decision to also joined the race. And the idea behind that is that theres currently no progressive candidate in the running currently supervisor peskin serves as the president of the San Francisco board of supervisors and hes been on the board on and off since the early 2, thousands, but currently is set to turn out later this year. If he does officially joined the race, will he be joining incumbent mayor london breed supervisor ahsha safai. Philanthropist Danielle Lawrie and former San Francisco mayor and supervisor mark farrell, a poll that was recently done in february by the San Francisco chronicle showed that a majority of residents do not approve of the way. Mayor london breed is currently running the city. The poll included more than 800 likely voters with more than 70 disapproving of the mayors performance overall, the poll also showed that voters are disappointed in how the mayor has been handling public safety, homelessness, Drug Overdose and housing affordability. When the question of who residents are leaning towards for mayor. Well, former interim mayor mark farrell got the highest percentage of all the candidates. The San Francisco Unified School District is getting a new payroll system and this is coming after employees in the district said that they were not receiving the right paychecks for about 2 years. The frontline educations california enterprise resource system was made for california k through 12 education and it is the most used system in the state. So not the School District is going to bring a contract to the board of education later on this month for approval with a target date of starting this new system by july of 2025. The superintendent doctor matt wayne said in the statement this decision was made after thoughtful and careful consideration of what kind of system we need as the 3rd largest employer in San Francisco. Im confident that this change is in the best interest of our employees. Students at Mountain View high school are accusing their school of center ship journalism. Students filed a lawsuit yesterday after the schools principal removed a story about an alleged assault case against a teacher and then fired the schools journalism advisor. The story had been published by the student run newspaper called the oracle. The lawsuit is asking for the right to publish that story. And for the reinstatement of that adviser as well as the journalism class that that adviser created the district and the principal now have 30 days to respond to this lawsuit. In the south bay, the Santa Clara County register of voters is expecting about 45 to 55 of registered voters participate in the primary election next tuesday. The county says this is a lot lower than normal. Adding that is only got ballots mailed in from about 8 of voters so far. And there are reports of a shortage of voting machine machines and Voting Centers impacting areas where there are tight race is already taking place. And earlier today i spoke with san jose mayor matt mahan about the voting Coverage Plan for the tuesday election. I think the Important Message is that people have many options for voting by seeing our county registrar to be very clear about their Coverage Planning to make sure that we are serving all neighborhoods in our city, all communities and that everyone has equal access to opportunities to vote. So he did acknowledge that its Santa Clara County, thats in charge. But as far as being the mayor of san jose, he is aware that he needs to step in there and make sure everythings going smoothly. And tomorrow, more than 100 Voting Centers will be open up throughout the county. Voting centers will be open from 09 00am until 05 00pm this weekend and on election day, all elect all locations will be open from 07 00am until 08 00pm. So there are nearby areas there and this that are going to see several feet of snow covering citys homes and roads. It is creating some hazardous conditions. There are several ski resorts that are closed and kron fours terisa stasio shows us how this storm is impacting this year. From whiteout conditions to wind speeds clocking in past 150 miles an this storm is packing a punch. It promised. Weve said over 50 fire engines and a couple 100 individuals to various locations. Weve also sent swift water rescue teams for some of the areas that might see downstream impacts was chris darden, a spokesperson with the California Office of Emergency Services doubling down encouraging californians to play it safe and stay home as this weekend is expected to bring even worse weather. Like we said, these are extremely dangerous conditions. Whiteout conditions, 10 plus feet of snow in some areas. These are not conditions that are passable by your average individual. So hunker down. If youre if youre in the snowy areas, if youre not a just cancel or postpone your plans, do not try to travel in these really dangerous conditions. Take a look at this on i80 in Nevada County stretching over the Donner Summit. Slow going. As trucks got stuck and caltrans crews stepped in to i mean, yeah, you can see the wind. And palisades tahoe, the resort slammed with snow forcing operations to shut down friday to 145 mile per hour. Wind gusts at our the record is 199 Miles Per Hour. But we could potentially beat that but it is really blustery up dont really recommend coming up here at all. Leahy says that for the rest of the weekend, it will be a wait and see as the conditions are predicted to get even worse before getting any better. Theresa kron, 4 news. Yosemite National Park is going to close at midnight tonight because of the winter storm. The park will remain closed at least through sunday at noon and possibly later. Visitors who are currently at the park were told to leave by noon today. The National Weather service is forecasting several feet of snow throughout the park with very high winds. Calais in the Weather Center. Now a camera. Do you have behind you there . You can see whats going on. I know its hard for me to tell. Sometimes this is my Incline Village camera that youve seen many times where you can see the lake right through their. This is usually where people are. Kind of putting their boats in the lake. You can hardly see anything the cameras covered with snow and then weve got snow on the ground. But i did see some white caps out there on the lake. They got that wind rolling. This is diamond peak where you can see know what it is. Sitting there enjoying the snow because its just too wild right now. Theres too much coming down too quickly. And you can see that with all of those darker blues. As i zoom in here, it really is just fast and furiously. All of this moisture thats brought us. Some rain today is rolling right into the sierra and you can see it right there. We dont see those colors that often. Thats very heavy snow thats coming down right now. So they are under that blizzard warning were in the thick of it. Weve got the wind. Weve got the snow. Its all happening. And that does go until sunday at 10 00am. And it wouldnt surprise me even if it were extended a little bit. Honestly, to sundays looking pretty active. So we are talking about high wind above 75 Miles Per Hour in spots that can cause power outages. Tree limbs down all kinds of problems. So if you are, you know where if youre already there, you have to stay put to stay safe. If youre not there, you got to just wait and we are going to see snow levels dropping down to about 2000 feet by tomorrow could get even lower than that on sunday. And this is the problem. Whiteout conditions near 0 visibility. And heres another issue to add to that. We do have avalanche danger is well, starting at 5. 30, today going through 05 00pm sunday. You can see the entire lake tahoe area and even some points to the south of that are under this avalanche warning because weve got layers of heavy snow and this is where we start to get a little bit of danger with that as well. So theres a lot to look out for. And this is futurecast showing you that heavy snow is going continue to fall as we get throughout the night tonight. This is in the overnight tonight. Notice tomorrow we get a little reprieve. But then in the afternoon, its right back in with the heavy snow and were talking potentially 4 to 8 feet of snow in some of the peaks we could see even higher than that. This is sunday, by the way, at 10 oclock. So thats why for me, im just saying i wouldnt be heading anywhere near there until at least monday. Back to you. The city of San Francisco releasing some new numbers about the number of people cited for using drugs in 2023. This report says of the 718 individual cited only half said they lived in the city 141 of them arrested, also received a cash assistance from the county last year. Police made more than 2000 arrests for drug sales the tenderloin and sees more than 260 pounds of fentanyl. So far this year, police have made more than 350 arrests. The Solano County Sheriffs Office is investigating after a mans body was found along. I80 in vallejo. The mans identity has not been released. Officials are saying he was found near the georgia street offramp. Investigators say the man appeared to be in his mid 30s, but no other details have been released. In the south bay. Mississippi republican senator cindy hydesmith says that she supports ivf, but democrats proposals are going too far. The owner there is because he says hes needs help from the community after another incident happened there that we talked about our oakland deli that was burglarized and partially set on fire this morning. And this is the same deli that we talked about earlier in the week. Because it is facing a nearly 10,000 fine for litter which the owner claims he should not to pay kron. 4 suite of al followed up with the owner about this latest setback. Jason herbers is sharing photos of one of 2 suspects. The Security Camera captured early friday morning burglarizing his business. Stay gold deli in west oakland. He says the same man and woman broke in and stole a safe last month. This time they broke into the empty atm and stole cash from the change box. Then on their way out, set the menu on fire as herbers as manager was entering the shop. Chances are there are still in there and heard by measure it and took off. As theyre seeing, theyre watching the venue or or herbers says the thieves somehow bypassed the alarm and turned the camera away from them once they realize they were being filmed manager called the police. Still have a right. That was as of the afternoon we used to have a fully functioning deli section of this place that had all kinds of goods and things like we had so much problems with we just took all the rocks down and just made a Counter Service because we couldnt. And we just put it was just got to a point where . We just got tired of doing this as herbers is pushing back against paying the nearly 10,000 in excess litter fees. The city says he owes. The fee is imposed on food businesses and the program was adopted in 2006, the city says the money is used to pay for contractors to pick up litter along commercial corridors. The city says those workers collect 400,000 pounds of litter each year. Herbers has not paid those fees dating back to 2021. And with interest and late fees. The total amount due has ballooned. He claims the city neglects his property where people illegally dump their trash in massive amounts on a weekly basis. The city says it is willing to work with herbers to reduce the charges and reached out to him. After kron 4 aired his story this week. But herbers says the 2 sides have been playing phone tag and have yet to connect to garbage got dumped or property that you guys this story about is still there. No one in frank ogawa plaza. Cares. We have 6. 80, in walnut creek there on the top 10 golden gate bridge. Hopefully know which one that is. And the san mateo bridge at sfo. So you kind of see kyle, all sorts of different pictures going on in the bay area right now hit and miss rain. We want to know how much longer next storm is going to last and whats going on across the country. Yes, weve got this big winter storm, obviously on the west coast that were all dealing with. But i want to shop for second. Also about that. They have a storm rolling on the east coast and the southeast. It had some flooding concerns there. Fire concerns all the way from texas where that horrible wildfire is all the way up to the dakotas where you see that red and theyre dealing with, unfortunately more heat coming their way and wind. And of course, weve got whats happening on the west coast with the winter storm. You can see though temperatures here starting to warm up already. Dallas about 68 degrees. But over the weekend there talk about 70s and more wind in amarillo right around for that. That fire is so wanted to come back to the west coast were actually be cooling down because of this winter system thats rolling through. You can see this low pressure system. Weve got another front thats being kind of tracking through today, bringing an awful lot of sierra snow and some showers with it here for the bay area. Some of them now starting to get a little bit heavier. You can see as we kind of take a look here and we zoom in right across marin county here right across mill valley. They just had a big sell roll through that is now headed towards those of you in richmond and then a nap. But we also had another one that just rolled through restart. See those yellows, right . Thats where those heavier downpours are. So you can see were getting kind of more active as we get to the afternoon. These are running cross very quickly, certainly across the peninsula. And you can see in the south bay, one just went right across san jose, but it is going to remain active. Wanted to mention that the coast is a dangerous place to be. We do have a swell thats been coming in to see those wave heights out off the shore are 24 feet. If we kind of roll into shore near point rays, you can see where theyre now up to about 14 feet. So ive been watching this approach the coast as weve gone throughout the day today. So high surf advisory, sneaker waves, very dangerous conditions out there that goes not just through today, but till 04 00pm saturday. Ill be back in a bit. More homes are in danger of being destroyed by the massive fire as the lone star state. Fights now the biggest wildfire in its history. At least 3 wildfires are burning across the state right now. And officials are reporting that there is no end in sight. Many are fearing things could get worse this weekend when there are ferocious winds that are set to return to the area. And now to the latest out of the middle east because there are some different narratives coming from israel and the Palestinian Health ministry about what happened near gaza city with more than 100 people dying during the delivery of food and aid. Palestinian Officials Say Israeli Forces opened fire on the crowd as they were waiting for food. The idf says gas and surround trucks and many of them were trampled to death in that chaotic rush for aid. The idf added that its troops only fired on the crowd when they felt endangered. Witnesses say that many people were hurt because they got rahm by trucks that are moving fast, trying to escape that israeli fire. Weve seen the reports, obviously, certainly alarming were very sad at the loss of innocent lives here. I mean, these are human beings that are trying to feed themselves. Too many civilians have been killed and israels military operations that we continue to reiterate that civilian lives must be protected. So right now, u. S. Egyptian and qatari mediators are working to get a truce before march 10th. Thats when the muslim holy month of ramadan begins so far. Israel hamas are not in agreement on the terms. President biden says the 8 incident adds urgency to the truce talks, but it will likely complicate the negotiations. I was on the cell phone. We dont know if its exactly these 4 people, but its very likely that it is so she can review of the 4 names that shes been given and now conduct her own interviews. And at that point, she can pick one of the 4 people there to be police chief or she can reject the list like she did before and asked the Police Commission to come up with a whole other list. A finalist oakland has been without a Permanent Police chief for about a year now. And mayor sheng thao just released a statement about the list that she got and it says in part that she will take the time that is necessary to select the person that will lead the Oakland Police department. Kron 4 is your local election headquarters and residents are hopeful, theyre gearing up now for one of the most important days of primary election season next week, more than a dozen states will vote on what is known as super tuesday. Our washington, d. C. , correspondent Hannah Brandt explains why super tuesday matters. Super tuesday puts more than a 3rd of the delegates up for grabs. Its not enough for any candidate to lock up their partys nomination, but it could get them pretty close. From california to texas to virginia, 15 states head to the polls on super tuesday. Do we want more of the same . Or do we want to go in a new direction . Former South Carolina governor nikki haley is fighting to stay in the republican race. Democratic congresswoman katie porter is in 3rd place at 19 . Congresswoman barbara lee in 4th place at 8 . And when it comes to the general election, the polls finding that shift would be carvey. 53 to 38 . That and you offer some a shelter bed. Dont take it. Thats their right. But is not there right then to stay on the street. Babies who are born yesterday will not technically celebrate their birthday again for another 4 years. The chances of being born a leapling are one and 1460. But there were several babies here in the bay area that beat those odds yesterday being born on february 29th. That was a leap day. So, you know, its going to be pervasive as we get throughout our evening even seen a little bit of lightning offshore, indicating that these are just getting a little more energy with them.
