As potentially growing, we have sources telling us the board of supervisors president aaron peskin will officially enter the race sometime next week. Proper is. Michael thomas is in the newsroom following the story. Michael, hi, good morning, everyone. Thats right. No supervisor aaron peskin is not officially announced or launched his mayoral campaign. But sources tell kron 4 we could be seeing that official announcement as early as next week in this decision to really run is based in part on former San Francisco mayor mark farrell decision to also joined the race and the idea behind that is that theres currently no progressive candidate in the race right now when it comes to supervisor peskin, hes currently serving as the president of the San Francisco board of supervisors and hes been on and off of the board since the early 2, thousands. However, its currently set to run out when it comes to his term later this year. If he does officially joined the race, well, he could be joining incumbent mayor london breed along with supervisor ahsha safa e philanthropist, daniel lurie. And of course, former San Francisco mayor and supervisor mark farrell, a poll that was done earlier back in february of by the San Francisco chronicle showed that a majority of residents in San Francisco actually dont improve with the way that mayor london breed is currently running the city. That poll included a total of 800 more than likely to vote voters with a 70 of them saying that they disapprove of the mayors performance overall saying that they were not satisfied and disappointed with how the mayor has been handling public safety, homelessness, drug overdoses and housing affordability. When the question of who residents are leaning towards for the mayor vote, former interim mayor mark farrell, as you see there on your screen, he actually got the highest percentage out of all of the candidates. However, 38 of residents either said none or that they were currently undecided. Now, the last day to officially join the mayoral race is june 11. Kron 4 is highlighting the top candidates in San Franciscos race for mayor and one of those contenders is a philanthropist and air to levi strauss for Stephanie Lin sat down with candidate daniel lurie who says San Francisco has a broken city hall. Im asked the votersl do you really believe that someone who has helped create this system is the right person to change that culture, to fix that broken system. Could a political outsider become San Franciscos next mayor . Its the position daniel lurie hopes resonates with voters in a crowded race. And and the perception. Lawlessness is an acceptable part of life in San Francisco. I have committed my life to issues of poverty. I believe that i understand what is at stake. A San Francisco native and heir to the levi strauss fortune lurie founded the antipoverty nonprofit Tipping Point in 2005 raising hundreds of millions of dollars to fight homelessness in the bay area. We need to build more affordable housing. We have to get people job training and employment skills. He also served as chairman of the super bowl, 50 Host Committee working with local officials to bring millions in tourism and business dollars to the bay area. If you are elected mayor, whats the first issue you recruiting and retaining a police force . We were down 700 police officers. Its going to take us some time. No question about that. But weve got to give them tools to do their job. Then were going to be cleaning our streets. Youre coming up off the overpasses. You come down 6 street. Its going be pristine. The first image of San Francisco and our visitors and our travelers are tourists come here has got to be a city that is clean and safe and vibrant. As for the citys fight against chronic homelessness, we still havent built enough shelter. Pets. If you build enough shelter beds, which you could do in a matter of months. That you offer some a shelter bed. Dont take it. Thats their right. But is not there right then to stay on the street. Lurie proposing a different strategy to stopping the citys revolving door of drug dealers. Any firsttime offenders must wear an ankle monitor. We can track people and once they are in. One of the climbers like the tenderloin or in soma. They would be subject to a search condition acknowledging electronic monitoring does not fall under the mayors purview. You have the power of the this is not something you the mayor just decrees and it happens and thats where my background comes that we need to send a message to everybody. But you dont come here to deal drugs to do drugs. You come here, youre going get the help that you need. But you cannot be on our streets. Lurie promising a different approach to leading the city. One that starts, he says with accountability when something goes wrong in this city, its going to be my fault. Im it. Take ownership. Im tired of the fingerpointing. I think everybody elses as well in San Francisco, Stephanie Lin kron, 4 news. 10. 36 the time in the east bay bay area.
