From the bay areas local news station. Youre watching 4 news at 6. The cockpit. Right now at 6, a chaos in the cockpit of an Alaska Airlines flight headed for San Francisco after an east bay man tries to shut down the engines mid flight. Good evening, everybody. Im vicki liviakis. Im ken wayne. A scary situation that happened last night on an alaskan Airlines Flight from Washington State heading for San Francisco. Authorities say the offduty pilot was sitting in the jump seat inside the cockpit when he apparently tried to shut down the engines. The plane was diverted to portland where that man was arrested. Crawfords grant lotus here in the studio with us to break it all down. I mean, grant scary, but also. It so mysterious dome founding, you know, especially with it being a pilot, you worry about so many things in the past that so here we go, well set the stage for you at home because this is. Really weird happened. Sue a plane similar to this one here. Its called an embraer one. 75. But as you can see it come on the smaller side when youre talking about commercial aircraft, twin engine. So not the big 4 engines like planes that are use for a long overseas flights. And that only seat 76 people. So pretty small. This is what the cockpit would look like. Not a lot of room, as you can see move around in there. The jump seat would have been right here behind the pilots seat. And so far we dont know exactly how the suspect allegedly tried to shut off the engines or how he was subdued. But when the plane took off from everett, washington, was a little before 5. 30, last night was headed to San Francisco when Authorities Say the suspect an offduty pilot caused this disturbance in the cockpit trying to shut off the engines. They say the crew was able to get them out of their secure the plane and they eventually made an Emergency Landing here in portland. Now, heres what the conversation sounded like with air traffic control. Weve got to try the cockpit. Has been issue of access we want Law Enforcement to get on the ground for sure authorities in portland were waiting to arrest this offduty pilot once the plane landed. Police arresting 44 yearold Joseph Emerson from Pleasant Hill. He now faces 83 counts of attempted murder. 83 counts of reckless endangerment. And one count of endangering an aircraft. There is no word tonight on a motive. The fbi is investigating this case, ken and vicki and i guess can will go to the pilot that you are the questions i had. How would physically have have tried to shut off the engines and what would have happened if you are successful . Well. Im not a commercial pilot. James guys are a tps air transport pilot which is a special license that you have to have to fly. These commercial planes, a jump seat. I have been in jump seat in the cockpit in a plane even larger than that takes gets a hold seat. You see in the flight attendants in those should say fold down the rivers. They have the same thing in the cockpit. So he was sitting behind probably the left seat as you described, which is where the pilot is. The copilot be in the right seat the controls are right there. Almost within arms reach of worry is you have the the engines. Its too 2 engines. Theres, you know, basically a throttle those back and forth forward is power and back is less powers. So it could have been as simple as him trying to reach over and interfere with with that. You can see it on the on the screen behind us is to an officer at the bottom of the screen right there in yeah. Yeah. Those are the throttles and could have tried that he could try to shut off the fuel. Theres a couple things he could have done, but obviously the 2 pilots in interacted and stop that from happening. Yes. So. Obviously were going to find out more later about the mental state of this pilot. What caused him to do it . But we dont know yet. But arent pilots required to have checkups every 6 months. Every 6 months a firstclass second class and 3rd class medical certificate. You have to have from the faa. The first class is the most restrictive than most rigorous that you have to pass. I dont know whats on it. Beyond that, im only had a second class actually have had a first class back in the day. So ill just tell you this. When i took it, there was no mental competency. Part of the exam. It was strictly a strict isnt at all. I cite make sure your heart is ok, they do ekg, that kind of stuff. So physically they check to make sure you can function the cockpit. I dont recall anything about a things need to change. Maybe a little mental them checkup and were going to be under the influence or, you know, theres a lot of things that we dont know about what happened. Extremely scary for the pilots who were fortunately able to get him out of there. And then next subdued. The people in the plane obviously knew something was wrong. I do feel that for, you know, as wife and kids who are just like, imagine hearing this about your dad and husband all the sudden from all accounts extremely out of character and just so many questions left. Yeah, i think its for me safe to say it will be a long time if ever that he flies a commercial plane again, after Something Like this, you would tank. All right. Thank you for that. You get you. We can tell you that neighbors say completely out of character. They say he is. Somebody who is upbeat and just good people. This Pleasant Hill home is where alaska pilot Joseph Emerson lives with his wife and 2 kids. You know, joe in garage outside loading things, doing things getting ready for the kids to do things over, talk and things just basic things like that. And you seem. Find doing things and no problems at karen and ag live right next door to emerson and his family. They say what hes accused of could not be more out of character for him. We were totally shocked and we still cant believe it. Were still this is sound like joe, what i dont know what happened to him mentally that he would do Something Like that. Hes always been very very friendly. Hes very up the say when their grandson is in town, plays with the emersons kids all in all. They say the emersons are very friendly. Neighbors show recently remodeled his backyard. And weve been over there to celebrate. So. You know, just friendly and upbeat and just good. People. Karen, nice. As when news broke, she texted emersons wife to offer love and support and any assistance they need. I just cant believe the charges. Theyre outrageous cause hes obviously had some illness or something happened to him. I just feel so bad for him and i feel bad for his family. I know there really suffering with all of this. Some writing found in the bathroom saying that 2 students were being targeted. Parents and grandparents dropping her kids off today say that theyre hopeful everything will be ok students say that theyre nervous, but think everything will be fine with officers on campus. No word of police will continue a heavy presence on that campus in the days ahead. Several brawls broke out at a High School Football game between Iowa High School and kennedy. This past weekend, the fighting got so bad. High school is in the west Contra Costa County School District who issued this statement. Quote, the west contra costa Unified School District takes the safety of our student athletes very seriously. And we are disappointed in the outcome of the october 20 game between Vallejo High School and kennedy high school. We are committed to take all necessary steps to preserve safe and respectful opportunities for athletic play. And you can see the equator here all showing up in white that give you an idea of just how warm the atmosphere was now weve got to a 2015, 2016 season and look at this. Another very strong el nino showing up here. But we hardly had we just had normal rainfall. 23 inches of rain. Now. What is going to happen this year head . Well, heres the very latest on the el nino comparison. And this is comparing this to the other. You can see how far behind we are as far as warming on the very latest el nino tran. So what does that mean for our weather ahead . Well, thats a very good question. And theres so much uncertainty and that rain forecast now know just did put out its latest longrange forecast and they actually had a much above normal rainfall, possibly along the west coast. In fact, you can see some of that rain possibly showing up across parts december and all the way into february. And were going to some changes coming our way. So weve got to be careful. These longrange forecast was just so much uncertainty from one el nino event to another there. Lot more factors that go just the el nino itself. So were going to keep our hope that we get a decent amount of rainfall. Certainly we dont want to have flooding. But of course, when youre starting to talk about a strong el nino event and there that will enhance up. But this was backed off a bit with over the summer a lot of forecast models were saying that were going to have a strong maybe very strong el nino event. Now were talking maybe moderate to maybe a strong and thats a big difference from what kind of weather we get california and temps a little bit lower today as korea warmer winter. It might be on the new generally means a little bit warmer winter, but well just have to wait and see. Hopefully a lot of snow in the sierra.
