But some groups around the bay area have some mixed feelings about what these pilot speed cameras will mean for the neighborhoods. Adoption fees are being waived at the Contra Costa County Animal Shelter as it continues to exceed capacity, too many animals as kron fours. Philippe djegal tells us healthy pets may actually have to be put down and some Animal Rights advocates believe that drastic step can be avoided. Pets available for adoption or foster homes are pictured on Contra Costa Animal Services website. And the list of cats and dogs coming into the shelter is outpacing the number of animals going out. No shelter is meant for longterm housing or care of animals. And we have. Over 100 dogs have been with us for 30 plus days. The county has been waiving adoption fees since the summer yet overcrowding remains a crisis. Animal Services Director beth ward says the shelter has space for 114 dogs and right now houses 178. So last year, still spay and neuter appointments are backed up for several months at public and private facilities throughout the county which are struggling to control the growing pet population.
