Governor newsom has signed a bill to preserve Outdoor Dining spaces in the state regulations for the restaurants to serve customers out. Fresco were initially adopted during the pandemic. Meanwhile, people have been a bit slower to get the covid booster shot this year. Thats according to the u. S. Department of health and human services. They say 7 million americans have received this latest jab, but that significantly down from more than 18 Million People who have their protection updated by this time last year. Quite a bit lower. Joining us now to talk more about this is ucsf Infectious Disease expert doctor peter doctor chinhong. I have heard from some people saying its been hard to get an appointment. Is that the reason that people are kind of delayed on getting the jobs at this time . Well, know that multiple reasons. I think that in the beginning was a rocky not everybody had vaccines, but now i think they are in a more robust supply. The second reason is unlike the first for love when it was easy to get regardless of what status of insurance you had. I think this time depending on what insurance you there was a some delay in people having the right code. Ive even if you are uninsured that still free. And thats the main Takeaway Points for people. But that was unclear for a lot of people. Beginning. But i think probably the biggest reason is, you were preparing for the winter the increasing, he says, is going on right now is probably going to come in the winter. So i think theres a longer time to prepare for that. And as long as you get it by halloween, should be okay. In the bay area any sense of how long people have to wait to get an appointment say if you if you decide today, you want to get the shot when you can actually get it based on that, you know, out there supply. A good pressing ground. I think it all depends on how choose who you are. If you have your heart set on moderna all pfizer, you may have to you know, wait for your appointment based on what type you get. And theres, of course, no box right now. I think that its about a week for most people. I think the that another big important point is that some people might have tried to get it when it was first released. Very rocky but its much smaller than now. So another servpro for me is to not give up. You know, if you persist, youll get it right now. I think a weeks time is what most people reporting. We did have that summer surge. As you were i do feel like maybe a some people are curious about whether or not they even need it. If they just had the infection. Whats your advice to those folks . If you just had the infection wait 3 months before getting it because youre going to be very well protected the vaccine that we have available is very close. The match to what sick leave it right but you should definitely get it because we are expecting that the winter will more unpredictable. Its likely going to be larger than the summer thats happened for the last few winters. A small as summer increase and a bigger winter increase in some senses you have some time. But definitely dont forget about it. Theres novavax vaccine you referenced. Is that an mrna like moderna and pfizer to recommend that one . Whats the deal with it . Yes. So i really like the novavax vaccine as well. Prepared over more traditional way. Its protein subunit. So that means if you have a terrible reaction to pfizer mrna chances are you may not have that reaction with novavax its updated as well. Ages 12 and above so younger pfizer and that thats the only vaccine speaking at a few younger but 12 and above a it is a really good option. And studies have shown people will have few or a loved fewer side effects with i know of acts. I know my mom just got her covid vax yesterday as well as your flu shot on the same day. I do know though seniors are being urged to get rsv vaccine as well. Can they get all of those at the same time or would you, you know, suggest that they spaced out . So the best data as covid and flu together. Its like given oil and vinegar, but you also say they get rsv at the same time as well. Most people, however, a space beyond if you could. It you know, when youre a vaccine this year so that you can cru tolerated. I think flu and covid people used to. But again, convenience trumps everything. So if youre only going go to the cvs, walgreens, once a year stock up on, i know your supplies and thats the time. Just get all 3. Good to see it. Doctor peter chin hong. He is the steams Infectious Disease expert with ucsf who has helped guide us through covid the past several years. 7, good weekend. Thank you. Thanks so much. Back to our top story tonight. Israels minister of defense telling more than 1 million palestinians to leave in northern gaza, head of air strikes as their conflict with hamas continues to escalate. This. Despite the uns objections calling the order impossible, a ground offensive may be next. If israel sends Ground Troops into gaza, heavily armed militants could enter the war and side with hamas in the bay area, families and friends of loved ones in gaza say they are worried, sick day of thousands of civilians that have already been killed in many. Gaza residents are gazans were forced to evacuate was really little or no idea of where they were going. Kron fours Ella Sogomonian visited a mosque in los gatos and talk to people who have family caught up in this conflict. The bay areas home to palestinians, both christian and muslim here at this mosque, the Islamic Community has been coming together daily in order to console one another and pray that the violence and abroad. On friday, more than 2 million palestinians have been ordered by Israeli Forces to evacuate gaza before another round of air strikes. Sure, a crude says he last spoke with his family who is in gaza on thursday morning. He says that theyve lived for years, taking cover from bombs and struggling with few resources, but that this week took a turn for the worse in a way that he has never seen before. Countless homes and businesses were obliterated in airstrikes as people hang on with little food, water and access to electricity already people have been living in such a densely populated area with a lack of resources with the lack of basic this is desperate times and really really government says is more or less issuing a sentence for people in gaza. At this moment, the California Office of Emergency Services shared concern. Over any potential violence spilling over into the golden state. Now some synagogues, churches and mosques are considering heightened security and the south bay members of a mosque in los gatos have gathered daily in prayer for their families in gaza and to console one another. Scary are worried where traumatized. Were constantly in shock and how much worse its getting enough and sen. Weve just sitting in praying and messaging that is difficult, obviously, because all electricity is cut off and communication is sparse. Check in on them and texting. And we know that there. Trying to evacuate. But theres really nowhere go. When asked if shes worried about her personal safety here in the bay area. She went on to say that her concern still lies first and foremost for the safety of the people in gaza. And so it could added that when he heard about the cal oes system reminding people that there may be extra Law Enforcement patrols around these spaces. He mentioned that he hopes that it truly is in order to ensure the safety of the people inside and not surveillance them like what he says he witnessed after 9. 11 reporting in los gatos. The ring of fire Solar Eclipse will dim the skies tomorrow morning. The moon will pass directly between the sun and the earth. But since the moons a bit farther away right now, it will appear smaller in the sky. Meaning skywatchers will be able to see more of the fiery orange with him around the sun. The closest place to see the annular eclipse will be in far northeast california here in the bay area. We may see closer to 70 of clips. Joining us now is chabot space and science center. Astronomer. Gerald mckeegan gerald, 70 isnt what youre trying close or to 77 actually. So, cooking by taking out 77 . That is specific and i will defer to you what all of this. So whats your advice to folks who live in the bay area who might want to try to check it out . Where can they do that . Best . Well, were going to keep our fingers crossed that the weather is going to cooperate with this. Were expecting some cloudiness tomorrow morning, although it may be intermittent cloudiness. So you might get a few breaks to see the sun. If so, you want to make sure you do it safely. Do not look at the sun directly your naked eye. There you run the risk of burning your retina and sunglasses are not good enough. So there are a couple of things you can try if you can get your hands on a pair of eclipse glasses like these. Thats the ideal way all way to look at this if you think you can do is get piece of aluminum take a pen and poke a hole in that. And then hold oil up over a piece white paper the sun shines through that pin hole produces an image of the on the white paper. That will actually let you view eclipse. Another cool thing to try to find a tree, a leafy tree and stand under the tree in the shadow. As the goes through the gaps between the leaves the tree. It produces the same effect as you can with a pinhole camera like element. Well, so youll see a whole bunch of little images of the eclipse on the ground. So these are all safe ways to view the eclipse. The eclipse is going to reach its maximum at around the tweens 9, 18 9. 20, in the morning depending where you are in the bay area. Tomorrow morning airing the 14th. And at that time it looked like i say mine will cover approximately 77 of suns diameter. So it will definitely dark in the sun, but it theyre still going to be a some bite. This happens because orbit of the moon around the earth is not a perfect circle. Its ellipse. So owners a little farther away and sometimes its a little closer and theres a 14 difference between the wpsize of them and one thats closest. And when its farthest away. So this eclipse is going occur when the moon is a little bit farther away. So its a little too small to completely cover the son. So you can see a little rim if youre in a a in a region where you see maximum eclipse, youre going to see a little rim all the way around the moon. And we call that a ring of fire. That is very cool. I had would have never thought about the whole aluminum foil white piece of paper. So theres so many different ways. I know that a lot of people want to take their phones out to take pictures of this. Is that a bad idea . Like is there any damage that could happen upends night. Personally wouldnt try that. But it depends on the a lot of people in pictures of eclipse is they put filters on the front of camera lens. These are filters specifically designed to do that. Those shelters will filter about 99. More than 99 of the sunlight so that you can get a nice in your camera. However, ive noticed a lot of smartphone cameras. Actually, people have pointed them at a son and they dont see the so. I use a little caution, give it a try and see what happens. Maybe one of those things where its just you see it and you know your experience the hope 2046 right . Well, the next total eclipse. Keep in mind that clips were going to have now is called an annular eclipse because of that ring of fire. The next total eclipse is april of next year, but not viewable here in california. Its going to run up through mexico through texas and in the midwest. And that will be a total eclipse. And thats going to be april of 2024. Gerald mckeegan with chabot space and science center. Thank you for your expertise and sharing that with us. Fingers crossed for the weather crossed the weather cooperates. Right . There you go. Speaking of the weather, chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow to hear what he said getting the over to mexico and texas, lawrence. Yeah, im going to be headed that way. That april 8th of next year. Check that out. Thats what you want to see it. Thats for sure. But wed love to see the annular eclipse here. He mentioned one of the neatest things to be under tree and look away from the sea. All eclipses all over the ground. Hundreds of depending on the mound of leaves on that tree. Quite the event, youve got to be careful. You got to take care of your eyes. Just looking at the sun directly for a few seconds. You can burn your retina. So be very, very careful. So this is all setting up. Now the moon is going to move between the sun and the earth. And there you go. You get your annular eclipse. It is at what we call apogee. Its for this point from the earth. And that mean that appears a little bit smaller. And thats where you get that ring of fire around the moon. It should be just a beautiful sight to see in the bay area. Yeah, unfortunately, were dealing with some low clouds are going to be hanging around. But boy, it was clear skies. If you can find a clear spot, youre going to see quite the sight is going to be a spectacular sight to totality of this annual eclipse actually clipping northeastern california and traveling to nevada all the way down in the texas. You want to see that badly . You can go there. All right. Its all about the weather really overnight tonight and tomorrow morning weve got a cold front coming through. This cold front is just kind of falling apart and hanging out over the bay area. So 9. 30, tomorrow morning, this model even pains, not only clouds, maybe a couple light showers around the bay area. Now you can see in the south bay, there are some clearing there. I think that will be the best chance maybe in the bay area to get a really good look at the eclipse. If you really want see the eclipse, you might want to head of the Central Valley and its southward in the southern part of the joaquin valley and then youll certainly get a better viewing. But the storm system coming on shore right now, you can see it this a cold front, not much of one, mostly energy headed up the pacific northwest. A few scattered showers already falling parts of the north bay. Right now well see more of that kind of dragging south as we head through the night tonight. But as robin wright underage of high pressure, so its going stall out. Its going kind of fall apart as it moves through. So were going to see some light showers, maybe a few 107 inch of rain. And that is going to be about it. Other folks may see some drizzle along the coastline. So tomorrow, yeah, maybe a little bit wet early on in the morning, especially near the coastline in the north bay by the afternoon to get a little more sunshine, 60 70s fries looking out over the next couple days, right through the weekend. Many more sunshine warming up as we head in towards sunday. Another chance with another weak system coming through monday night into tuesday. But after that, start heating things up. Weve got some 80s and 90s in the middle of next week. Its maybe that last big heat up of the season. But if you can see the eclipse, it is going to be spectacular. Theres several places i did want to mention chabot space and Science Centers doing events, you know, with some of the i a the glass. A glass of moratoriums doing something as well as there are several different places. Yeah. Make sure you get legit ones. I know there are a lot of ones that are out there. Make sure legit. Been wanting to damage a chance to damage your eyes, that thats for sure. Thanks another legit. We want to go to some place like chabot also played. On amazon. Yeah. Youve got to be really careful what youre ordering through. Yeah, its true. Yeah. Thats a whole other back on the way lawrence, thanks.
