And para educators or those who work oneonone with special needs students who could walk off the job. The last time a teacher strike happened in San Francisco. It was 1979. Around 6,000. Educators will make their way through the voting line wednesday at balboa high school. Voting on a possible strike against the San Francisco Unified School District impacting around 50,000 students and more than 110 schools. Megan dukes teaches kindergarten at Alvarado Elementary School and says the current pay for teachers in the city does not cut it. Its been really unfortunately, ive ive had a couple of friends leave the profession who are really, really good educators because they just couldnt make it work. The Teachers Union has been in negotiations with the School District for the last 6 months. Most recently, the district offered 10,000 raises and a 30 per hour minimum for teachers who work ipwith special needs students. Duke says thats for this year that the district has a stipulation for their 4 salary increases for the 2024 to 2025 school year. They wanted us to agree to unspecified budget cuts to secure a raise and also withdraw. No cost proposals that help stabilize school communities. The School District offered no new comments wednesday but referred to their october 3rd statement saying current district proposals are a major step forward to attract and retain qualified educators. President of the Teachers Union casandra curio. As a possible strike will be about more than a livable wage. We have so many vacancies when we have such high turnover when we cant retain educators. When are classified members are paid enough. And when our working conditions continue to impact our students, education. Tonights vote is just to authorize meaning. Really a lot of concecns. To think that, you know, people are still. Putting out negative racial remarks about people and about a particular race of people. That people were using slurs that were hurtful for people. So we wanted to help and that i love the support. You need more support. You know and all the school needs to know all of this.
