She was remembered as a trailblazer in american politics and an inspiration for women in the world of Public Service. This is a live look now at the United States Capitol Building in washington, d. C. , where flags are flying at halfstaff in honor of the senator and this morning, Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer conducting a moment of silence for feinstein in his address. Schumer said, quote, we lost a giant in the senate. Fine son was the oldest sitting u. S. Senator. She was a passionate advocate for liberal priorities, including environmental protection, reproductive rights and gun control. But she was also known as a pragmatic lawmaker who reached out to republicans and sought middle ground. Her death comes as a federal Government Shutdown looms. And Dianne Feinstein left a mark of politics nationwide before becoming californias longest serving female senator. Her career began in San Francisco. Prof was Ella Sogomonian spoke with a friend and former feinsteins what to say. Feinstein is being described as a graceful tenacious woman with attention to detail who was able to persevere through many a tough time in San Franciscos history. Dianne feinstein was the first woman to serve on the San Francisco board of supervisors. The mayor of the city by the bay taking the helm after 2 backtoback tragedies just 10 days after the Jonestown Massacre in 1978, her colleagues on the board of supervisors, mayor George Moscone e and harvey milk were assassinated. She process the gruesome discovery of their bodies at city hall, then gathered composure and address the public is acting mayor on the day of her passing. Feinstein is also credited with saving the iconic cable cars by securing 1 Million Dollars in funding. Its hard to imagine the city without them. Wunderman explain that. Senator feinsteins home here in San Francisco is a very quiet corner. San francisco. You can see some flowers being left there and for the gate in front of her home, some of her neighbors, people who knew her were stopping by today. And as you someone who knew her well with San Francisco, former San Francisco mayor willie brown. I caught up with him earlier today in north beach where he says he was really caught off guard by the senators passing. I am obviously. Instantly didnt believe it. Friday morning. Former San Francisco mayor willie brown said he was shocked to hear of the passing of senator Dianne Feinstein, especially after she had voted in the senate on thursday. And so i surprised. Built bill, of course, of the night when she was function, them yesterday the former mayor in the senator had a friendship and working relationship that went back decades. Brown recalled the time of the 1960s when feinstein who was then known as diane burman, showed up to a rally to protest discriminatory housing policies in San Francisco and who showed up. She broke down barriers and glass ceilings but never lost her belief in the spirit of political cooperation. And she was a fighter for the city, the state and the country. She loves every race. Cannabis dispensary. Police were attempting or other responding to an attempted burglary. Fours Philippe Djegal shows us the video. Police. 3 expect plays video a person just before 03 30am, in the morning on august 18th, the Security Company for the velvet cannabis dispensary in martinez. Called 911 reporting. An active attempted burglary of the business happening live on security footage. At least 6 people are seen walking up to and scouting the storefront apparently looking for a way inside having access to the building at all. That i see. It looks like the kind of Standing Police releasing 3 separate angles from outside of the business. At least 3 of the suspects seen carrying what appeared to be large plastic garbage bags. Eventually a store manager calls dispatched to work or thing. Felt it. For emily, police say the suspects arrived in 3 cars, a blue infiniti reported stolen out of livermore. A white toyota suv stolen from a victim who investigators say was robbed at knifepoint and another stolen car eventually ditched down the street. None of the suspects are ever seen breaking into entering the building from our 4. So to conduct Surveillance Video shows officers arriving about 8 minutes after the suspects are first spotted on the video released. The white car is already out of the frame when police show up an officer is heard on dispatch audio saying the driver headed toward the freeway. The vehicle was eventually recovered in oakland. The blue infiniti is seen attempting to leave the parking lot. But was initially blocked by a patrol car. The driver spun around and blew past officers. Police say an officer was assaulted in the process. He was later hospitalized with minor injuries. 4 cops open fire on the car as it drove off Police Released body camera footage 3 of those officers have a shot fired the 10 to 45 on officer. And he into a fire hydrant get a fire started. 20 yearold tahman wilson and his 22 yearold brother tony wilson junior. Were in the blue infiniti. Both suffering gunshot tahman died. Police say a loaded handgun was found in the car that the state department of justice is investigating the deadly shooting because technically the suspects were not armed. No charges have been filed. All 4 officers involved were immediately placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of several investigations. The Wilson Family hired a civil rights attorney. Authorities arrested and charged a suspect in las vegas today. A grand jury in vegas indicted duane davis with murder. Investigators say the suspect did not pull the trigger, but he provided the gun. Davis was taken into custody this morning, the sheriff said he is the last living person inside the car from which shots were fired, killing tupac shakoor. The Sheriffs Department says it was daviss own words in 2018 that reinvigorated this case. It is one more davis said he was in the front passenger seat of the cadillac and had slipped the gun used in the killing into the back seat from where he said the shots were fired. The driveby shooting happened near Las Vegas Strip in september 1996. Tupac was in a bmw driven by Death Row Records. Founder mary and night. They were at a red light when a white cadillac pulled up next to them and someone started shooting tupac was shot multiple times and died a week later. He was just 25 years old. You know, i love you and i have both spent some time. Yeah, its at seeing it out there. I mean, it is very different from what we to seeing with the golden gate bridge. Yeah, for sure. But, you know, you get a heavy rain happening in the city. You get a lot of runoff very quickly, right to call the concrete jungle. And unfortunately because you dont have any kind of earth absorbing some of that you get runoff really fast. Thats what happened this morning. A very scary situation. We are also looking out for a little precipitation, but nothing like that. Thank goodness were having a very San Francisco. We kind of afternoon, though, as we do watch all of our live pictures turn into some low clouds that are out there be cooled it down and that cloud cover is increasing. Tonight. Were going to see a shower chance late tonight likely in the overnight hours and the supermoon is tonight. But this is why i was saying it was a good idea to take a look at it last night because weve got the cloud cover out there saturday. Were going to have some scattered showers possible, but we will clear out by sunday. And so if you have outdoor plans, i think your sunday still look pretty good. Current temperatures right now, 63 in downtown San Francisco. Were 78 in santa rosa. Just 69 in livermore about 74 in san jose. The wind has been picking up throughout the day today. Right now you see nevado at 23 Miles Per Hour. Fairfield at 24. Thats going continue as the system starts to roll in. So temperature wise, weve obviously cool down today and looking at our inland valley temperatures. And by the way, thats a live picture from the east they can hardly see anything right now. She squared off against fellow Democrat Los Angeles state senator Kevin De Leon who said it was time for a change. Many agreed with feinstein getting reelected with just 54 of the vote and our final term in office ended up being quite a challenge following the divisive twentytwenty confirmation hearing of Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett feinsteins competency was called into question for this comment. Well, youve had a long career of Public Service in San Francisco as well. Youre on the board of supervisors and a Senior Adviser to nancy pelosi. And find side, of course, was no doubt a trailblazer for many women. But does she shape your own perspective on politics as well . Shes someone who i got to be very close to during my foot. Theyre my political and afterwards out. Work very closely with her when she was in the senate that i was on Speaker Pelosi staff got to know each other and a lot of i show, you know, where you have a lot of down time and you just talk its she is someone who always really enjoyed time being the supervisor proud of that fact. Proud the fact she represented San Francisco and she says she was certainly a role model for how to get things done. Shane would be any other part of the country. A raging are left. Farleft democrat been in San Francisco. She was seen as a moderate centrist apprentice because shes like try and get things done. And that actually was for me very much a role model for how i worked as a supervisor trying to. Okay take it a problem. Find a way to create a winwin solution for both sides. And thats exactly the mode Dianne Feinstein showed when she was mayor. And its something that i think kerry carried out a lot of people, not just me and how we approach politics in terms going beyond. All right. And you know, michael, we heard a lot from different lawmakers about todays news. A senator Chuck Schumer, for example, he made some pretty emotional remarks on the senate floor earlier today. He called her and someone who inspired a lot of women to pursue Public Service. Can you walk us through some perhaps landmark legislation that she left on San Francisco, the bay area and the nation. Well, i mean, just from from a purely service co point of view, you should save the cable cars channel. Theyre running down. A basin were broken to do it. I think for for young women, everywhere who janet now aspire to be anything they want to be, especially in politics. That was not the case for Dianne Feinstein. And by essentially saying im your equal deal with it. She created a situation that created the platform that is taken for granted today. But when you think about what she is done, i mean, know, its its just amazing. She she she passed the first assault weapons Gun Legislation that banned ar fifteens for 10 years in this country that stopped Mass Shootings using these weapons of mass destruction for 10 years. Shes someone who help with violence against wearing shes someone who, as created by year. I are very nature. You kind of see that dip in the jet stream and then High Pressure that is off the coast and it is basically funnel all of that moisture. Some of tropical component right on up into the northeast. And unfortunately, theyre not quite done with it yet. They have a little bit more to go. But back to the bay here we are all about get the cloudy conditions and the Cool Temperatures and even a little bit of mist out there right now. 62 degrees in San Francisco. 65 in oakland were cool out there. 74 in san jose. But record rainfall has increased vegetation growth which could act as fuel for future wildfires. The fire Officials Say the state has a mediterranean climate. So wildfires are a threat yearround. They warn that weve only just entered the windy fall season, which sees strong santa ana winds from now through may. And the last supermoon of the year appeared at its full us this morning. But its not just a supermoon. Its also the harvest moon. Historically, the harvest move signals to farmers to gather summer crops. This years harvest moon appear bigger and brighter. A supermoon happens when a full moon is at its closest point of orbit to earth, although its already pete, the moon will still appear very full and bright again tonight. So keep your eyes peeled.
