You will start in oakland where authorities are now facing the aftermath of several sideshows from over the weekend. The Police Union President says, although the california Highway Patrol has been sent in to help more officers are needed in order to fight crime in the city. Kron fours haaziq. The family of missing saratoga teenager has now confirmed that Human Remains Found near Castle Rock State Park are those of 17 yearold katie schneider. The discovery was made saturday as crews were searching for the missing teen. The 17 yearold went missing over a month ago and last week deputies found her White Honda Accord right near the park. According to a social media post schneider was involved in a car accident that led to her death. Their circumstances surrounding that accident remain under investigation. A very grim discovery in Golden Gate Park, a person walking their dog found a womans body last night near stow lake inside of a duffel bag kron. The festival was just a couple of hours away from wrapping up over the weekend. 225,000 people went to the festival. Im sure thousands of people walk through this area, but it was dog walker who came across the body. You see all those flowers and that stump that is horizontal. Its in that area where the body was discovered. Now this is at 22nd and fulton. The festival wrapped up at 9. 40 last night at 7. 30, last night that dog walker went by here. Were not sure if that dog led the person to the bag or if the person saw the bag. But we do know that they call the San Francisco police department. They came out here now, according to the San Francisco standard, which is a new 8 news agency, a body was found inside the duffel bag. It is too early to tell a motive at this particular point. Yes, so many people at the festival and this is just outside of the festival. So they are still looking to see if this person was somehow connected to the festival. At this particular point. We dont have an id on this person, but course, because the body was found inside a duffel bag. It immediately was considered a homicide investigation. Hawaiis governor is warning that many more people could be found dead following the wildfires in maui. The blazes that consumed most of the Historic Town of behind a are already the deadliest in u. S. History in more than a century, 20 cadaver dogs and dozens of searchers are now making their way through city blocks that have been reduced to ash. I will tell you as a physician. And then weve got a little bit of heat going on to take a look at current temperatures right now. Just 65 degrees in San Francisco, oakland, about 70. 87, though, in san jose and 96 in livermore. So that inner east bay is where the heat is popping up today. Conquer right now at 89 degrees in santa rosa, as you can see at 87. So 2 things at play here. One is this low pressure system to our south that is helping to drag in tropical moisture, which is why we saw a little bit of lightning last night. Were seeing a little bit of in the sierra right now and a few sprinkles in and around the bay and then High Pressure to the north of us. And that is whats bringing the heat. So as we take a look at stormtracker 4, you can see where the lightning right now is popping up big time over in the sierra. You can see all about mammoth lake right on up to lake tahoe and even a little bit of it. Now starting to roll right south of monterey as well. Weve seen some sprinkles of come. Cross has been a trace of rain in spots like santa rosa. Im not a whole lot of this making it to the ground, but it is certainly unsettled weather. And that is because of tropical moisture thats being drawn in. So tonight were going to see that slight is slight, isolated shower chance, but its still out there as we get through the night tonight, increasing clouds and temperatures notice are going to be pretty warm here in aris day tonight, antioch, looking to get down to just 70 degrees in the overnight hour. So we get into tomorrow and were going to have very similar weather to today. You can see again, the inner east bay will be where the heat is. It hangs on for a couple of days. Well be looking at is really warm temperatures in San Francisco, some 90s up in the north bay and down the south bay looking out for those upper for the cloudy weather is going to be with us a little bit, too. Before we get this tropical moisture kind of moved out and onto the back a little bit. Happening tomorrow, thousands of San Jose City workers are planning to go on a threeday strike. Some Critical City Services will be impacted. Kron fours. Well, bellow has more now on the negotiation. She is live for us here in the newsroom. Good out justine officials with the city and to employee unions appeared close to reaching an agreement earlier today. They were meeting again before noon. But as of now, the strike is still on for tomorrow. Last week, about half of San Jose City workers voted for the threeday authorize strike. Thats set to begin it really could shut down the city. This includes 911, dispatchers librarians airport workers, city inspectors and sanitation specialists all planning to go on strike tomorrow. San jose mayor matt mahan said he would possibly shut down the citys Animal Care Center to try and help cover the costs of the strike. Workers would be striking for better pay. Last week the sides were about 20 Million Dollars apart, which is quite a bit when it came to salary negotiations. But union reps say the city has made a new proposal which lee in significantly more towards its needs. Thats what theyre meeting about this afternoon and what we are awaiting updates on at this hour. Justine, the san jose mayor has said it is possible the citys budget projection could be too conservative. So its likely more could be available for workers. However, the city does not want to get itself into debt either. It happened last night just after 11 along southbound 8. 80, near the 29th avenue offramp. The chp says a gray honda was involved in a crash. That driver died. The cause of the crash is under investigation. Prosecutors in georgia are expected to seek an indictment against former President Donald Trump this week. It would be the former president s 4th criminal indictment, the Fulton County District Attorney is investigating alleged efforts by trump and his allies to overturn the 2020 Election Results in georgia. Notably a list of criminal charges against trump appeared very briefly today on the Fulton County website. The list was deleted shortly after it was reported on and a spokesperson called the information inaccurate. But first, one San Francisco hospital could be caring for medicaid patients once again. Details on laguna hondas push for recertification. New at 3 San Franciscos laguna honda hospital could be one step closer to being reinstated as a medicaid provider. The facility has officially applied for recertification. With federal regulators look at the honda lost its medicare and medicaid funding after several scandals, including claims of patient abuse, patient overdoses and safety violations. If the hospital is not re certified by next month, it will be forced to either discharged or relocate roughly 700 patients. Those transfers originally began last year but were stopped after a dozen patients reportedl died during the process. So were getting a little bit of a break. The heat in the injuries. They should be a little worse than it is right now. But i think those clouds are helping hold those temperatures that werettaking a live look from mount tam the mount tam cam as we like to call it. And you can see the cloudy skies are certainly out there pretty pervasive. And again, that kept things a little bit cooler expected today was about 100 degrees in spots like livermore in antioch. You can see were sitting right now. Kind of in those mid almost upper 90s. A 65 in downtown San Francisco 87 in santa rosa. 85 down in mountain view. So it is kind of below average day for some above average day for others are microclimates are on full display today where it is warm. Oh, boy, check it out. Fresno right now sitting at 104 degrees, 103 in bakersfield in reading 103 as well. So you head inland and you encounter the influence of High Pressure and that is why were seeing all of these heat advisories and excessive heat warnings go up across the state. Now. Notice theyre not directly in the bay area, but they are to the north of us. They are inland over sand down south. Also in and around san diego to getting in on some of that. And that has everything to do with the High Pressure. All of those warnings and watches are also up in the pacific northwest. Now weve got low pressure kind of counterbalancing that a little bit. And thats whats bringing the clouds all of that tropical moisture. So today, the unsettled tropical air mass kind of takes precedence over much of the High Pressure. But still were going to see some of that heat not just today, but through thursday for spots like the inner east bay where we could see those temperatures. Upwards of 95 degrees Storm Tracker 4 showing you that tropical moisture rolling on in and it is getting activated with the heat of the afternoon in around lake tahoe down to a mammoth lake as well. Bringing a few sprinkles still around the bay. But as of right now, we havent seen a lot of accumulation. What we do feel when you walk out the door, though, right is the humidity is a little bit higher than we normally have. Were at 61 in San Francisco. You can see even conquered inland about 36 . So thats part of that tropical moisture to just to show you futurecast how this plays that we do clear out a little bit as we get into our evening. Thats just a little bit of that drizzle from our marine layer rolling in. But tomorrow we get into the afternoon. We should stay peaceful. But as you head over to lake tahoe, theyre still looking out for some of those thunderstorms to pop up in the afternoon today and tomorrow. Notice we stay warm in the inner east bay in particular until friday. Thats when well start to calm things down and get back to seasonal temperatures. Back to so much. State lawmakers are officially back at the capitol today after a month long recess. And for the next 5 weeks. Theyll need to consider more than 900 bills and decide whether or not to send them to the governors desk by no later than september 14th. Our capitol correspondent eytan wallce spoke with a law professor about what we should expect us. This deadline approaches. This is a mad scramble to get bills enacted because remember, the legislature will go on recess in mid september. They wont return until the first week in january. So this is the last push for them to get legislation through into the governors desk. After the deadline passes, Governor Newsom will have 30 days to decide what action if any, to take on the bills, including whether to sign them into law or veto them. Its bills do not make it this year. They can always be reintroduced next year to address the nationwide Teacher Shortage here in california. Afternoon, federal student loan payments are set to resume in october for the first time in 3 years. New survey from credit karma finds that 56 of borrowers say theyre going to have to choose between making their loan payment are covering basics like rent and groceries. This is the line. In more than a century. And government Officials Say its going to take a lot of time and resources to rebuild. Theres a lot of last year and i think were going to significantly higher numbers. In the coming days, emergency crews are scouring maui as the search for bodies and possible survivors in the rubble. The fires killed dozens of people tore through thousands of buildings and decimated the town of la hina. We will be in hawaii every step of the way to help residents taking a stroll, but the recovery and helping rebuild in a way that is going to make them resilient. Fema administrator Deanne Criswell says the federal government is surging help to hawaii. Right now theyre setting up shelters and providing funding for first aid and food. This is going to be a longterm recovery operation. We have the resources need today we continue to identify what the needs are will continue warrant. Senator mazie hirono told cnn shes happy with the federal response so far. We are in a period shock and loss. From what i can see, they goldman agencies are there but says she expects bipartisan support from congress for further funding to help her home state recover. It is not going to be overnight by any means it will take years. This is an entire town. That has burned to the ground. And right now the estimated cost of the damage in hawaii is about 6 billion dollars. Just back to you. Its a lot of money or at a question for you because the pentagon is saying that no active duty forces are involved in the recovery efforts, even though hawaii is home to some 10,000 active duty military personnel. So why are they making that decision . Well, the pentagon Spokesman Says those forces will absolutely be ready to help as soon as they get the request from hawaii. But he also said they dont want to rush any sort of response because the logistics of all of this are very complicated and they dont want to get in the way of any sort of rescue operations that are already ongoing there on the ground. Hanna, thank you so much. Actor and native Hawaiian Jason momoa went on instagram to warn people against traveling to hawaii. He warned that cheap flights are helping wildfire victims evacuate off the island and local hotels are prioritizing those who have been displaced. The actor continues to direct others to organizations for donations to support those impacted by the fires and dockworkers of the bay area are collecting donations for the victims in maui. The International Longshore and warehouse unions, local chapter hes collecting supplies in San Francisco through the end of this week. They are accepting donations to load on a 40 foot container all this week. Up until friday, high priority items include canned goods, bottled water, baby food and diapers, hygiene and feminine products, pillowcases and Reusable Bags are also being accepted. The group also is looking for monetary donations. There have been high alert for months after this winter storm. So many of them brought unprecedented snowfall which threatened to unleash flooding as it started to melt. And although the state of emergency remains in effect, Officials Say the flow of the snow melt has been manageable and only triggered some minor damage. Rivers in the region are still seeing higher than normal levels. But thats expected to cool down by next month. Well, i knew what it means basically is that weve had, you know, significant melting wanted to have to right now. You can see South Lake Tahoe right now showing some thunderstorm activity and the same story in truckee. So its a very active afternoon there. And were going to see that not just today, but as we get into the next couple of days where they have those isolated thunderstorm chances. So if you are out in that area, make sure you are aware of this because as we get into the heat of the day as im seeing right now, all of this lightning starts popping up and that can get dangerous. Quickly. Want to make sure the iihs to the sky on days like today. Were getting a little bit of that moisture as well as rolling towards us. But i wanted to kind of zoom out ats going on with hawaiis, whether because, of course, they are in recovery mode and we have a Tropical Storm here. We have a hurricane here and then we have an area of interest. Were keeping an eye on for development. All of that kind of lined up rolling towards hawaii. Now there is some better news here because this Tropical Storm is not expected to strengthen and this hurricane, while it is a major kept more category 4 hurricane right now, hurricane fernanda that is actually going to weaken as it heads toward to y 2. So just to kind of show you the tracks of how these play out, Tropical Storm greg staying to the south of hawaii and kind of starting to dissipate and hurricane fernanda thankfully weakening from a category 4. As you can see, you know, past one going down to even just posttropical before kind of get over to where it could impact them. So that was something that caught my eye today when i came on and i was happy to see that those 2 systems are not expected to cause very big impacts for hawaii, at least at this point. But we do still have some that wind that were dealing with. You can see about 29 miles per hour. Wind gusts that are out there right now and for their recovery. You know, they are dealing with some breezy conditions and some isolated showers over the next few days, but at least nothing too extreme is expected to impact them. Bring it back to the day.
