The fire destroyed over 1000 structures really wiped out the whole town. Residents were allowed to go back home today. A curfew is in effect until tomorrow morning. President biden has declared a major disaster on maui, promising to streamline the request for help. Today, the States Air National Guard flew in Disaster Relief equipment and lots of workers. And in an effort to help with search and rescue operations Contra Costa County assistant fire chief jeff peter was deployed to maui. Chief peter flew out of oakland earlier this morning. Hes a member of the federal Emergency Management agencys Incident Support team con fire says peters deployment is just part of their commitment to provide assistance in times of crisis with the communities. And on a broad scale. Some bay area residents, course, were vacationing in some of them still trying to get back home. We talked with the family who landed in maui tuesday and were shocked to realize that were heading right into the line of fire storm. Since then, they have taken a refuge. 25 miles south and wiley. People at the hotels theyre theyre all kind of trying to figure out how theyre going to make it back home and book flights back home. We spoke to some people that work in the hotels. And have family that live in la hina that lost their homes. And weve just you know, asking them, what can we do to help . Is there anything we can do . And they have such sense of community. They telling me that theyre going all built. You know, though, come out of the stronger and they all help one another and will work this out together. And they said just you saying that you care means a lot to them. If things go as planned, nobody is assuming anything at this point. But the family is scheduled to fly home tomorrow. At least 67 people have been killed. Many say they didnt get enough of a warning to get out. Kimberly cheng reports. Behind a residents describe harrowing escapes as flames engulfed maui. No matter the cause of the shootings, chp will have 180 freeway cameras in the bay area at their disposal in the coming months. Those cameras may capture, you know, information on a suspect vehicle or suspect that we may be able to utilize in indepth, very, you know, lengthy investigations, not all cameras are operational right now as caltrans works to upgrade infrastructure and its oakland Transportation Management center. In the meantime, officer barclay says to stay safe, drivers should distance themselves from others who are driving recklessly. If it means taking an axe, it take an exit and then, you know, get back on the freeway and know that being a Good Samaritan could help with a future investigation.
