The Summer Season as far as a meteor begin. But skies. Thats going to be the big question. E are going to see some low clouds and fog move into our skies. So that will be an issue. Show you more on that just a moment right now as you head towards saturday night going to want to look toward the northeast and check out the skies. Maybe 30, maybe 100 meteors per hour back in 2016. It put on quite the show. And boy, you just never know. Forecasting a these a meteor showers. A very hard. Youre trying to forecast exactly where the earth is passing through some of those fields. Take a look toward the constellation perseus. You should see a beautiful sight. Again, youre going to want to get away from the coastline. Thats well see. Plenty of low clouds and fog and well, we may see a little subtropical moisture too. All right. Heres the forecast model i roll you through to saturday night at 11 oclock. So the meteor shower already underway. You can already see that patchy fog, though, moving inside the bay and up above are seeing a little subtropical moisture rotate back from the east. And youll see here is we put into motion as we take you to just after midnight and 1 oclock, you see some of the subtropical clouds moving in overhead. Now, i dont think that cloud deck is going to be extremely thick. So youre probably going to see some clouds rolling on by the scene. Lot of meteors in between along the coastline. Just going to be a tough go with low clouds and the fog. Theres just no getting around it. Really want to see the meteor shower, i would head well inland if you can even inside the bay may be touch and go with that fog. Low cloud cover into the Early Morning hours. But it will continue. That peak will be on saturday night into sunday. But the meteor shower will continue well into the next few days. Guys, back to you. All right, lawrence. Yeah, Perseid Meteor Shower is one of the best astral events of the year with potentially over 100 fireballs an hour. Streaking through the sky this joining us now to talk more about this, give us some tips about the best places to catch the show at john astronomer with the chabot space and Science Center. Gerald mckeegan. Welcome. So high fully, though. And hopefully the weather is not be more cooperative than what you just forecast. Well, thats the deal. Every time we have a Fireworks Show for the 4th of july, what happens . The fog obscures the clouds come in. Is that going to happen this time . For those of us in the bay area, gather is a good chance that theres going to be fog or clouds. But tomorrow night, saturday starting at around 11 oclock. If you have some clear skies, you should be able to see the Perseid Meteor Shower. This is meteor showers caused by debris left behind by a comment called swift tuttle. And comet swifttuttle orbits around the every 134 years approximately. And each time it gets close to the side, heat causes the ice on a comet to basically evaporate what we call someone embedded in that ice is a lots of little rocky particles of dust and so forth and that material released and forms a stream of particles orbiting around the each year around august. 12th, the earth passes through stream of material and we get meteor shower called the Perseid Meteor Shower, ok . So this these arent shooting stars. These are just shooting ice rock particles actually mostly rock rocky particles. Its and iran dust and so forth. And as a enters the atmosphere there, theyre going very started kilometers or second or so. Alright so they burn up in atmosphere. You see him streaks of light across the sky. Right. Less romantic than a shooting star. But the good news here with theyre not like asteroid or something where we have to worry about it. Round so the way to to look at him, dont use binoculars. Dont use a telescope or anything like that. Just find yourself a dark sky location. Lay out on the ground and just stare up at the sky. You dont have to look at any particular direction because they can appear any part of the sky and just sit back and watch for a couple of starting around midnight. And you should see plenty of meteors. Well, thats quite a show. Its a lot cheaper say going to to the theater. Yeah, it will bring bring a little picnic lunch some hot coffee and so forth, joy, can a nature at her most spectacular. So again, to reiterate you, you dont need a telescope, know binoculars. You can look at it with the naked eye. These meteors streak across large parts of the sky at a time. So but i colors for telescope are just going to restrict your view. You want to be able to see as much as the skies hospital as youre staring up there and watching these things together, they can appear at any part of the sky. We call it the person because to you, they point from which they appear to radiate in the constellation perseus which will be in a northeast. Houston sky. But the beauty or some cells can appear any part of the sky. So we understand that if youre urban area are highly populated area where theres a lot of light coming from that, then it can obscure your view. Do you want to go the more Light Pollution you have to if you a meteor going to see ideally, you want to get away from the bay area. Find yourself dark sky location go down south of of bay area or out east of the bay area. Find yourself a place where the skies relatively dark, where you can see lots of stars. And thats where youll see most of the years, even in the bay area. You can see a few but a less Light Pollution have the better. Fortunately tomorrow night you dont to deal with. So he should have pretty dark sky to work with. If you can get away from the city lights, ok . You know, i have to ask you this. Do you get phone calls when when this happens from folks who think that it possibly foes . Occasionally. And that happens. But we reassure know this is a very natural it happens every year around the same time of the year. This is one of the 2 most prominent meteor showers during the year. The other one is the geminid meteor shower in december. And happened every year. Theyre very predictable. We know exactly what theyre caused by snow. We reassure everybody is this is not an alien invasion order. You know, killer asteroids or anything like that. Just shes just had real nice light show to watch i just all that part of much larger universe. Im so happy to hear that little bit of predictability in this world in day and age. Its actually a welcome thing. Thank you so much for joining yeah, the chabot space and Science Center is just terrific. So, you were going do that. You know, were going to have a viewing of actionable tomorrow night. However, it is a ticketed event is already sold you sold the tickets pretty quickly. Everybody wants to see it. Okay. Whether time here as we get a live look outside san the Transamerica Pyramid a but clouds out there in the sky conference. Chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow joins us to let us know what the weekend looks like. Weve got some warmer for the weekend. Fact tomorrow. I think it starts to get hot in parts. The bay area, the east bay maybe into the south bay, a little bit to creep in the upper 80s. May some low 90s there as well. But that fog already beginning to race back on shore. Pretty healthy sea breeze out there. A lot of drizzle along the coastline last couple of probably see that again overnight tonight. And weve got a little subtropical moisture that has been moving overhead today. Kind of a neat site up there as temperatures today what you round number 2, a little more than 88 yesterday today. Again, right at the average of 88 degrees. 87 right, the average in concord, 82 degrees in santa rosa. 67 degrees in San Francisco. 67 also know clinton, 82 in san joses. All these numbers running right about the average for this time of year out the door this evening, the low clouds and fog beginning to stretch into the bay will see some that coastal drizzle tonight along the coastlines and maybe just over the local mountains near the beaches as well. But tomorrow morning clouds going to give way to mostly sunny skies. And then a couple mid to high level clouds. Some of that some tropical moisture still going to rotate in overhead. The building High Pressure on sunday going to send those temperatures much warmer. And by next week were talking about some triple digit heat right now. Weve got some mid 80s in concord and livermore. A warm evening there. 73, a little breezy into hayward. 74 in carlos, 79 degrees in san jose. 62 cooling off now in San Francisco. But you can see why the low clouds have moved in along the coastline, start to shoot across the bay as well. Right or berkeley at this time and more on the way thunderstorms erupting in the sierra nevada, some tropical moisture headed up in that direction. Look at all the lightning strikes boy in around the bishop area, a Mammoth Lakes really ripping up there this evening. I think for tomorrow were going to see a mixed bag with some patchy fog along the coastline. Those numbers cooler, of course, out toward the beaches with the sea breeze, a little drizzle coast side as well. 70s, though, as you get into millbrae and san brutal tomorrow, a drive down the peninsula. Certainly those numbers warming up in the 80s and then 80s in a mission or some low 90s. I think in the south bay, by tomorrow afternoon, east bay temperatures as high as 94 getting hot in lemore. 93 in pleasanton 81 in hayward about 76 in castro valley, 80 91 in devil about 91 also in the concord. So get the idea that temperatures kind of breaking up like they do in the bay area. Cool on the coastline with that sea breeze. And then that hot temperatures showing up in the valleys and then get near triple digits. I think as we head in toward monday and tuesday of next week, probably stay hot through wednesday. Then those temperatures going start to back off a cooldown. But yes, kind of funny how its worked out. The weather is kind of sick leave sometimes right now. Seems like we get done with all the cool weather during the middle of the week. That summer breaks out over the weekend. Thats not such a bad thing. Not such a bad thing because it will cool off again. Get sick of it. Thats exactly really gets too hot, right . All right.
