And our top story this morning as the death toll in maui has gone up now, at least 55 people are confirmed dead. However, they still havent even gone house to house or whats left of them. And the fear is theyll be many more scores still unaccounted for. And the question now on the minds of many who theyre in maui is why werent they give in warning sooner than they did . Maybe they could have escaped the flames a little quicker crawfords Michael Thomas live in the newsroom following that part of the story. Michael. You know, these stories of survivors not knowing exactly what was going on, matches up with what they told me yesterday at the airport. And now were learning that hawaiis famous Emergency Warning System didnt even go off at all during these wildfires before those. 55 people lost their lives. Take a look. This is what parts of maui look like right now in total, were talking about 1000 structures that have been destroyed with the rising death count of 55. And that says crews are still searching this morning. Many there tell us they had no idea there was even a fire happening. It wasnt until he saw smoke or heard an explosion and had to run. And according to hawaiis Emergency Management records, theres no indication that a Warning Siren went off at all or one was even triggered. Keep in mind, hawaii has bragged about its outdoor all hazard Public SafetyWarning System describing it as the largest integrated in the world, which has about 400 sirens across the island. Thats supposed to warn people about situations just like this. But it never went off. And Officials Say instead emergency text message alerts were sent out along with tv and radio warnings, but also keep in mind that the power there was out shortly after the fire started and sell signal, there is still spotty today. People say they look for shelter anywhere and that included in the ocean as they watch their homes in the city. They know and love burned to the ground. People are found in houses in a huddle each other because the fire surrounding their homes before they could even get out. Theres no way to go. And these are Beautiful Homes that are very old and in foot up like a matchstick. Nobody had morning. Now red cross is on the ground there now the situation along with multiple california agencies. When it comes to the preparation, maui fire officials had for this event. Well, they say theres only about 65 fire crew members on duty at a time in maui and theyre responsible for 3 islands. And they also have no offroad vehicles, which was challenging for them at times because many roads were blocked off. Now the deadliest Natural Disaster hawaii has ever seen back in 1916. That was during the tsunami that killed about 61 people on the big island right now, the death toll with the situation were looking at. 55 and again, it is expected to rise which may make the situation the deadliest Natural Disaster. Hawaii has ever seen. As of right now, these fires are 70 contained. And we do expect to hear an update at some point today by this morning in the newsroom. And california crews are on the way to help out in hawaii as well, including a member of the oakland fire department, fema, urban search and rescue task force. The acting fire chief points out that a lot of First Responders in these cases, there are victims themselves to and they step in and serve. Take over to try to help. And sometimes when we go into these communities, the people that are running their office or Emergency Services are suffering tragic losses as well. So if they cant do their job, were going to support them. 7 of the rules. And we know we want to take over, but we want to support them and ensuring that the community is getting what they need and that thats the recovery pace. So they just temporarily take control for these other people said that they can do. Whats necessary and and try to get on their feet again. Also, a canine unit is working hard its helping to identify wealth to find the bodies. You know, in the in the ash and to make sure that they are returned to their loved ones because, you know, a lot of people, as we said, are listed as missing right now. The chief says that the members from the bay area, theyre going to stay there as long as theyre needed. The destruction caused by the wildfire there in maui. Has many people looking here to help, you know, their family and friends and just strangers who need help in hawaii. White chamber of commerce Northern California says that they are still coordinating local relief efforts right now. Police in antioch are investigating a homicide. A man was sh t and nht on east. 6 oclock last 20th street officers found him with a gunshot wound and he died at the scene. We dont know his name yet and theyre not releasing any information about the motive or shooter. San francisco is now the first major city in the country with 2 Driverless Car Companies competing for passengers along with taxi rideshare companies. The california peuc voted to allow waymo and cruise to start charging customers for rides. Waymo says theyre going to start in the coming weeks. Crews are still working out the timeline for that. And meantime, some are still raising concerns over safety. So theres a danger of emergency where these blocking the road and could actually kill people are people who have a house on fire emergency care, very serious issue. And the fact that the cpsc didnt put that into their consideration. Is shows again that theyre putting the public in danger, something also hes going to happen. But mayor breed, she spoke in favor of the decision of the vote allergy. Well, a bill to raise bridge tolls is now facing more opposition. The city council in foster city is writing a formal letter objecting to the increase. Local officials are coming out against the bill because theyre worried that a toll hike would financially burden the lowest earning commuters who are already paying steep prices to cross. Foster city voted unanimously to push back against sb 5. 32, a bill that wants to raise bridge tolls by a 1. 50 for the next 5 years. The problem here it is. Its not being assessed for the use of the bridge is being assessed to fund public transit. And for that reason, i believe this is a tax. He says even after securing 400 Million Dollars for bay area transit, there is still a 2. 5 billion dollar deficit which he says if its not addressed, would force service cuts to public transportation, something that he says would be devastating for lowincome riders who dont own a car. 809, is a time. And now we know what caused a San Francisco bound flight to almost plunge into the pacific after it took off from maui. And this was back in december. But now the ntsb as coming through with their investigation and they say what happened was during takeoff. It was heavily reining in maui. They took off the cap and asked the copilot to reset the wing flaps, but the copilot misheard and set the flaps to the wrong setting. This mistake made the plane pitched downward and start accelerating. And in just 10 seconds that lee dropped more than 1000 feet before the pilots were able to regain control. Thankfully, nobody was hurt. They did regain control. 270 passengers and crew on board. Theyre all fine. That flight resume to San Francisco as planned. And the faa says that those pilots did report this incident themselves and the appropriate action was taken. Both pilots are still flying for united airlines. Well, san franciscans who attended city college within the last 5 years are getting their debt erased using taxpayer dollars. Mayor london breed says the city allocated a little more than 2 Million Dollars towards the Free City College program, which will forgive the debt of about 13,000 students who attended city college between august of 2017 and december of 2022, the citys hope is that by forgiving this debt students who didnt receive their Associates Degree will enroll in classes. Meantime, another federal Student Loan Forgiveness Program is in legal trouble. An Appeals Court in texas has blocked the Biden Administration rule to help out students who claim they were misled and defrauded by forprofit schools. The Biden Administration already approved roughly 13 billion dollars in Debt Forgiveness for defrauded students and about half have had their debts cleared. But in this lawsuit, careered colleges argues that the rule could change the rule change, i should say, would cause financial and reputational harm for forprofit schools and his quote, an enormous executive overreach while the new standards are on hold, eligible students can still apply for forgiveness under the rules of the previous program. And inside, they found sale of itch and 2 children dead. Investigators swarm of danville home after finding 3 people dead wednesday night. One of them has been identified as 44 yearold iman ya, sale of itch. Its believed the other were his children. You dont hear a lot crime and then this. Theyre of that magnitude. It was shocking unsettling. Neighbor john sweeney says the family who lived an lockwood circle appeared to keep to themselves. It was unusual for this neighborhood to see caution tape cordoning off the street and Police Investigating a gruesome crime. Its tragic situation psychology experts like doctor Thomas Plante of Santa Clara University say stress in america is off the charts. And with that, theres been an increase in new gun ownership. If you have a high degree of stress, Mental Health related problems, and easy access to lethal means. Things can get out a controlled really fast. A tanker truck tipped over spilling more than 500 gallons of cooking oil in San Francisco. It is of them escorting somebody to a waiting ambulance. Time now is a 35. And dont plan to take caltrain this weekend between the San Francisco millbrae stations because service is going to be suspended for repairs. And this is one of several closures that are supposed to happen this month. So youre encouraged to look for an alternate form of transportation. However, there will be bussed bridges for riders, but you still expect delays. Well, Union Pacific railroad is fully replacing a section of track in san leandro and the city is also making safety improvements for cars and pedestrians because the area has been dangerous at times. San leandro mayor juan gonzalez, the 3rd and city associate engineer driskell surveying the repairs Union PacificRailroad Crews are making to tracks along washington avenue thursday in the southern part of town. We all know rail. And vehicles and pedestrians dont always interact. Well, and this intersection is no different than other intersections. Poses greater risk because of the angle at which the rail road tracks cross the roadway. The tracks are being fully replaced. The street is closed chapman road and will remain off limits all day and night. Through at least sunday, the improvements here will make the rail traffic move more smoothly. Make sure the trains dont derail near gonzalez says it will also improve the angle at which pedestrians cross the Railroad Tracks, essentially at 90 degrees to increase the chance that the actually see and here trains passing through. It is certainly the case that weve had a fatality unclear whether it was due to the design. But clearly, we do not want fatalities here in san leandro and any opportunity to improve safety. Is paramount in 2016, 30 yearold Vanessa Henriques and her 3 yearold daughter cd were killed after their car got stuck on the tracks in traffic and were hit by a train at the time. Philippe djegal all kron. 4 well, in the south bay, if a deal isnt struck between the city of san jose and thousands of its employees this Week Services could be in jeopardy and that includes the care of hundreds of animals. Mayor matt mahan floated that possibility that the San Jose Animal Care Center would have to be shut down in order to cover the cost of the upcoming threeday strike. The overcrowded shelter has taken in nearly 1500 animal so far this year. Not clear exactly what would happen to the animals if that shelter had to shut down while the city has not confirmed which cityrun services will be affected by the pending strike. Weve heard from unions that they do expect wide ranging disruptions, including that Animal Shelter also libraries, youth summer programs, code enforcement. All of that is at risk. In the east bay contra costa. Animal services, by the way, says their shelter is full and they need to find homes for about 50 dogs. The agency says the shelter is now at risk of having to euthanize animals that arent adopted. You can view all the animals that are up for adoption right now on their web page. If youre not ready for a full commitment to adopting a pet, you could also consider fostering an animal thats more temporary and it would allow space to be freed up at the shelter, at least for now. In the east, an Armed Robbery of a High School Student in concord. And so the police arresting multiple teens and finding several handguns staff at Mount Diablo High School called police. They said a student had been robbed at gunpoint yesterday on campus in about 30 minutes later, the police found several teens in a Downtown Parking garage. They identified one of them as a robbery suspect and then they found multiple handguns and they found that several of the teens they thought were related to the robbery.
