Pictures tell the story. You can see just how widespread and expansive this fire is. These fires plural are. Yeah. We know that the Hawaii National guard has been activated in all of this. Of the fires by some of the people, james, this morning described as apocalyptic scene. And youre seeing that firsthand from the images that have been coming down from that now. So far we have not confirmed any lives lost in this. However, all of this is just unfolding. We know that several people have evacuated as they try to get a handle on things. We know that on balis west side, theyre saying that the 911 services are currently down here. Fact, the lieutenant governor, sylvia luke came out this morning saying 911 is down. Cell service is down phone services down. Even going on to say, quote, our Hospital System on maui, theyre overburdened with burn patients. People suffering from smoke inhalation and they really wont be able to get a handle even assessing the size of this fire and how much its grown overnight until they get more daylight and winds calm down enough. They can get helicopters in the air because at this point everything is grounded which means they have to fight these fires purely just from ground position and as i said, with the downed trees and power lines across roadways, its been really hard getting the Fire Equipment where it needs to go let alone to rescue the people that still need rescuing. Weve been reaching out to officials in maui. Were going to try and get you the very latest throughout the morning. She want to keep it here to the kron. 4. But at this point, the weather conditions, there are still something fears, in fact, very reminiscent of what weve seen here in the bay area with some of our north bay fires. Dont forget a few years back. It was the winds that caused the north bay fires to spread into places like santa rosa, faster than anybody had expected. And thats the situation theyre dealing with this morning. Yeah, and im out this powerful category 4 hurricane that theyre talking about Hurricane Dora. Which is even just passing hundreds of miles south of hawaii, still, in fact, making enough damage to pick up the wind gusts that were seeing there now spreading this so quickly. So thoughts and prayers to the families all new this morning. The people that are on vacation also forced to evacuate. Yeah. In fact, we know theres a lot of people that have family back on maui. And people may have friends vacationing there. We did check with the airports and we know a handful of flights to and from the bay area. And now we have been delayed at this point. None canceled just yet. But a lot of folks there vacationing have been told to evacuate and many of them may be trying to get back to the bay areas quick as they can. But well keep you updated as we learn we will whole lot to get to this morning. Back here at home. Weve also been actually paid attention to our weather here. John. We were really hot at the top of the week. But today were starting to cool down just a bit. Yeah hurts. Definitely go out to our neighbors over there just to our west as they are dealing with something that we know all too well here in the bay area and across the state. Wildfires dry winds as High Pressure ridge just north of low. That is Hurricane Dora and that compounding effect of both of them just really flaring up those dry winds across the islands. Thats something that we see this time of year into the fall here in the bay area. But this time around, its calm. Its a little cloudy for us. Were in a pattern thats actually keeping us cool for the time being. We have this onshore wind. Thats just subtle enough to push in some low grade this morning. We will see some sunshine this afternoon. Then a very pleasant set up for the day ahead of us today. Much like yesterday, starting with some 50s and 60s. Nice and cool out there. Great for the job this morning. That extra long dog walk coming later on today. A very familiar feel as well as daytime highs. Well, again, not reach the 90s. Just 60 70s and 80s right on par with where we should be for this time of year. Going to keep you updated on what else to expect this week as we go back to you. All right, john, thank you for that. We had a busy morning yesterday. You might remember we had several major accidents. Slowed us down today. Pretty different story. So if you are going to be traveling this morning, thankfully, the bay bridge, 20 woman right there, our san mateo bridge. We had that major hot spot yesterday were just at 23 minutes. Richmond center fell bridge looks lower, but its still just a 20 minute ride. So not to worry. And the Golden Gate Bridge about 31 minutes. Thats 37 to tolls. Very, very challenging to, you know, see this happening within our community. Our bar police say theres no indication that the suspect or victims were bart riders. They believe they just happen to be near the bart station when this shooting happened. Okay. Well, from a shooting to a fire now, in fact, 100 firefighters had to jump into action to battle a burning apartment complex in the citys inner sunset last night. They are looking for a substantial pay raise city of san jose is offering 5 for the first year for a proposed deal. And right now the 2 sides. They have not reached a deal, which is why the union is hoping for the best. But expecting the worst, meaning a strike. So take a look at your screen. They did send out this statement telling their constituents as well as the public what they plan to do. They say we hope to reach an agreement that averts a strike. We hope that the citys stops disregarding the skyrocketing costs of living and the under staffing crisis that impacts our members and our community. However, until we have an agreement protects services for the community strike, preparations are still very much underway. But again, they will be meeting this afternoon if they cannot reach a deal. Obviously, they have a few days before the strike deadline. If they go on strike, its a threeday strike is not indefinite where theyre out until they reach an agreement. So its 3 days. But even so it will still be the biggest strike in san jose in 40 years. The city of san jose. Theyre working see if they can give them more. We are looking at another relatively a comfortable one. Today. You are seeing outside some low gray out there push right into the bay. It is not necessarily a foggy morning because that blanket of cloud cover sitting right above us. So not so much. The low visibility, but for some of us, not the brightest of mornings. Now we have seen some ups and downs in the forecast. So understandable if you to think its going to be a fairly warm one because it certainly was that High Pressure ridge was in place. But now its been nudged out by this descending low and the cool air that its anchoring that pushed in yesterday resulting in our nice cooler temperatures anyways. And were going to continue to enjoy that today. But a High Pressure ridge builds back in this weekend and that allows temperatures spike again by sunday into early next week. Were going to be looking at those 90s back with near triple digits for now, todays daytime highs will be nice and cool, especially for a bayshore where youll be in the 70s and 60s only at the coastline. Another push that cool sea breeze tonight helping to moderate our temperatures. Highs on the map. 60s and San Francisco as well as up and down the coastline. Well, looking at some 70s for the bays i mention millbrae iseventy to foster city. 74 now view palo alto, warm at 77 while the south bay in the low 80s. Thats a full 10 to 15 degrees cooler than you were just a couple of days ago. Livermore, 85, which is certainly still warm, but well take it over the 90s. Oakland at 70. Well, looking at our warmest spots for this to inland, staying also below the 90s. Santa rosa through center fell only in the 70s. Now, looking ahead, we remain at least seasonable the next 3 days through friday. Wont be until the weekend that we start to see temperatures climbing. And by the time we reach sunday monday and tuesday, thats when the heat is really back on right now. All right, john, thank you for that. Look at your bridges on a wednesday. I was a protective order is not a gag order. George Washington University law professor paul schiff, berman says the order would only prevent trump from revealing confidential information. Its not a relevant to his First Amendment rights at all. Schiff berman says this back and forth between the former president and the Justice Department is only delaying the start of the trial. Which he says is what trumps team wants, presumably in hopes that trump would win the election and could then somehow scuttle federal prosecution altogether. And the judge overseeing the case scheduled a hearing for the protective order for friday morning in washington. Im jessi tenure. All right. Thank you, jessi. 22 is the time. Were back here at 8. 30, breaking news were following this morning coming out of the state of hawaii where fire crews on maui are battling multiple fires right now on that island, forcing many people to evacuate their homes. Yeah. And now were seeing delays to maui from bay area airport. Michael thomas is live in san jose. Michael, youve been talking to some folks down there. What are they telling you . Hi, good morning, everyone. What you know later just being canceled diverted. Take a look. This couple they arrived about 15 minutes ago. I asked if their flight still heading to maui and they told they werent sure. So theyre actually getting information from officials right now. When you talk about this fire, i take a look at some of video we from our sister station. Are now fires burning right now. And according to officials there, one fires burning in west which is a popular tourist destination. And another is burning at it area region. And according to the National Weather. Service, there is a passing thats making it hard because winds are really high there right some reports show 60 to 80 miles hour howard go ahead. And just take a look. You see these people are still trying to figure out michael, just interject here. Real quick. Were going to try and get your microphone square it out squared away. To pick it back to what michael was saying, obviously, got a lot of people being evacuated right now. Theyve got 911, service down right now. And theres a lot of problems with quite frankly, hospitals being inundated with a lot of people suffering from burned suffering from smoke inhalation. And thats causing a lot of issues and a lot of evacuations. A lot of tourists either canceling the flights there. Many vacationers having a comebacker exactly know we have michael mike is fixed. Michael, so youre talking about the people there at the counter. They are being impacted there at the airport right now. Yeah, good morning, everyone. Thats right. You know, and theyre not the only you know, behind the camera. Ive got another family of 4 that says that their flight has been completely canceled altogether. I these people were not sure exactly whats going to happen to them, but in addition to them, weve spoken with other people who say that their travel agents have different them to head over to oakland and that theyre going to plan to another island and they dont even have a place to stay, but theyre still willing to risk it to get to hawaii. And we talk about these fires. Lets get video up on your screen. You can see these maui fires that are burning right now. According to officials there, the fire is burning in west maui, which is a popular tourist destination. And then theres another at an inland mountainous region. And according to the National Weather service, theres a passing hurricane right now. Thats making it hard for crews to fight the actual fires. And thats because winds are being reported from 60 to 80 miles an hour at the highest its knocking out power. And its really grounding firefighters from using any helicopters. I mean, in addition to that, crews are also struggling to get to some areas because of downed trees, power lines and everything. All the chaos that happening there at that situation, there have been about 1500 customers that were without power. And now we and weve got reports of hundreds of homes being evacuated. At one point, the u. S. Coast guard says that they were even rescuing about a dozen people out of the water. Were running into the water because of burning structures and burning fires in that area. So as of right now, the state is under Emergency Declaration and travelers here in san jose, like i said, are really just stuck with canceled flights in worried minds back out here live. You can the counters are starting to dwindle down and thats because people are all finding out that their flights are being completely canceled. If they have a travel agent and theyre being diverted to another area situation. Like i said, i spoke with one family that youre going hear from the next hour who says theyre still willing to risk it. Theyre heading over there. They dont have a place to stay on another island, but their travel agent was able to get them to fly out of oakland over to a different island. Thats the very latest turn sent his say. I will send it back to michael, thank you very much. And obviously, as weve been talking this morning, its really been the weather that not only is making the fire spread off also. Impeding the ability of firefighters actually fight this fire to the winds been so strong. Yeah, exactly. Michael talked about it briefly. Hurricane dora category 4 now john. Youve actually been tracking since this first came into the guy asked of the news, where is it at now . Whats happening . Yeah. The conversation yesterday Hurricane Dora passing well south of hawaii will result in the high winds. But of course, with those high winds and then the very dry air over hawaii because of the fact youre not getting any of the moisture from Hurricane Dora. And theres actually a very dry center of High Pressure just north of hawaii right now. So youve got this extremely low pressure area region, which is that category 4 hurricane, a very strong storm, High Pressure to the north. The exchange between those 2 is resulting in incredibly strong winds in the corridors between each of those islands, the western end of maui is the area that has a mountainside right next to it. The city, a la hina right there just been whipped by winds gusting 60, 80 plus miles per hour. That High Pressure to the north keeping things dry dust, the very high fire danger. Its a setup that is very familiar for us here in california. Seems very familiar to the santa ana winds setups that we get with opposing low and High Pressure areas and then those dry winds that funnel through our own mountain ranges. And thats exactly whats going on in hawaii. So youve got category 4 Hurricane Dora, about 500 miles south of hawaii. Again, not getting any moisture from it. It will continue to make its way westward and weakening as it does. So as it gets away from the islands, usage should see less Exchange Going on there and a calming situation going on around the hawaiian islands. We have heard reports that winds are calming down this morning, which is excellent news. But of course, areas like behind a smaller communities up in the mountain sides and western maui already having reported that devastation, sore heart certainly going out to them this morning. As for situation here locally, were in the midst of a bit of a cool down. Got a little cloud cover up above cloud cover burnoff. Lots of sunshine this afternoon. 50s and 60s for current temperatures. Nice mild start get out there. Enjoy it. We are currently in the midst of a few passing clouds but that sunshine is going to win out more and more and going to set us up for this comfortable afternoon. Highs will be warm inland in the 80s, but not as warm as the 90s. Were about to see this weekend, which ill get to your full forecast rain. All right, john, thank you for that update. And educating is there about that hurricane. All right. Want to get a look at traffic because you are traveling this morning. Many maybe heading out to work or school 14 minutes into the city right now. Remember yesterday we had that major hot spot on the san mateo bridge. Thankfully, no accidents, no hazards this morning. But still an 18 minute ride. So still factor that into your commute. A Richmond Center fell bridge has been the slowest this morning. 34 minutes there. So be mindful of that. If that is your commute and our Golden Gate Bridge around 30 minutes, pretty consistently a 10 minute uptick and traffic on this wednesday. Were not only talking the roads. Days are also talking about bart yeah, of mass transit. Bart saying its going to be installing some new fare gates later this year to try to cut down on fare evasion, which is a problem theyve been battling for a long time. But those you gates will first be rolled out in oakland and then will gradually see them. Fours gayle ong has that story for us. Bart will be rolling out new fare gates this december at the west oakland station. The conceptual design looks like this. Its a 90 Million Dollar project paid for by bart county, federal and state funds. I think itll be cool. Everything is cool so far riders we spoke with are looking forward to the upgrade river. You know, i think they can do and supportive of you know, theres like its not there increasing police here. And theres literally putting up caller gave the lord eric taylor owns a restaurant in San Francisco hearing about the new fare gates apart is welcome news because his customers often take Public Transportation to visit his business something these kind of things like, help travel easier safer and better not. Just barry says, hes been having people this area. We know barton loses millions of dollars, a fare evasion. At the same time we do offer lowincome discounts and discounts for youth and seniors. But we do charge a fair and we need people to pay their fair specially as remote work is popular and were trying to get more and more people to take part for other reasons than a work commute. Bart spokesperson alicia trump says the new designs will improve access. For example, if you bring a bike or a stroller or luggage our current, sometimes a clampdown. Everyone sort of has that story on how bar clampdown on to you too soon. These new fare gates wont do that. Well, that was kron fours gayle ong reporting for us this morning. The new fare gates are expected to be rolled out systemwide by the year 2026. 8. 38 in a Pilot Program aims to help people that are struggling with drug addictions. But so far we havent heard back. On the peninsula, we have authorities in san carlos now investigating a home depot Security Guard who ended up shooting a suspected shoplifter. It all happened monday night at about 10 oclock at the store on old county road. The Sheriffs Office says the guard confronted the suspect has been identified as jonathan mackey. A fight broke out between them. Officials say thats when mackay grabbed the guards baton began striking him about the face and head with it and then ultimately through that. Through a glass door and that police say is when the Security Guard shot back. There was a a deputy close proximity who heard the shots responded called for additional units. The deputy quickly detained. The suspect provided first aid for the gunshot wound until medics arrived on scene. Mackey was released from the hospital and booked on charges of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities say that in this case it was a Security Guard intervened. But you as just a regular shopper, shouldnt they say dont insert yourself in a situation where shoplifting is occurring. Instead, they recommend you document what you see and call 911.
