We are warming up a bit but nothing extreme. Just average temperatures you can see wind down in the south bay right now is calm. It should stay that way until we get later into this afternoon and well see things pick up a bit. The marine layer certainly present as we take a live look out at half moon so were going to see that marine layer, compressed. But still, its hanging on to the coast today. But if you head inland at all, youre seeing lots of beautiful sunshine and a little bit quicker. Todays are taking a live look from the east bay temperatures. Still a little cool in San Francisco. 58 degrees, but were at 66 in oakland. Weve got 70s from san jose to livermore to concord, right over to santa rosa. So we are going to see a bit of a warmup today and were already noticing that if you look at the difference in temperatures between 24 hours ago and now with the exception of Half Moon Bay in napa running about 2 degrees cooler. Everyone else is running a bit warmer. And so, you know, this is the beginning of the heat. Thats going to come our way as we head towards the weekend. If you have time to get out and take a walk today, highly recommend theyre going to get a nice sunshine take a live look from our mount tam cam. You can see air. Marine layer still present. Giving us a little bit of a break as High Pressure starts to move in from the Desert Southwest and the South Central part of the country where weve really had that dome of heat thats been parked there. So as it starts to meander towards the west, we will see some a Southern California go into these excessive heat watches and warnings, including areas like palm springs and that kicks in on saturday and goes through monday. Now we dont have any watches or warnings, but that doesnt mean we wont be warming up. We certainly will. As we start to see that marine layer compressed and we get that High Pressure moving a little bit closer to temperatures right now. You can see where were starting to see the heat, right . 84 degrees in antioch right now. 78 in livermore also heating up in the north bay. 75 in santa rosa right now. 76 down a Mountain View and san jose around the bay itself. Weve got 65 in San Francisco and of course, that it happened a little bit cooler. So yesterday livermore is the line in blue here that got up. They got up to at 75 degrees. Now today livermore is expected to exceed that by about 13 degrees and get up into the upper 80s. So as we take a live look from the east bay here, you can see all of that sunshine thats starting to roll. And that is why were going to go from those below average temperatures yesterday to at least kind of where we should be today, which will be upper 80s if you are inland. 64 around San Francisco about 68 in oakland. So these are the high temperatures tomorrow. And thats when we really start to see the heat kick in. Thats were going to see some of those mid 90s start to show up. And that is just the beginning as we move a little warmer as we get into sunday, some potential triple digit heat for our inner east bay in particular and sunday. Still hot on monday inland by tuesday. Were going to come back down into more seasonal temperatures. So just a little bit hot this weekend. Make sure you make your plans accordingly. Back to you. All right. Cuyler, thank you for that. California governor gavin newsom and Florida Governor ron desantis could soon take their ongoing public feud to the puck to the debate stage. Kron fours Eytan Wallace shares the formal debate offer newsom sent to desantis how desantis is responding. Ron desantis since theyre claiming this freedom gospel leadership matters. They are doing it wrong here. No wonder why weve had so many people moved from San Francisco to florida. They have not shied away from attacking one another. And now california governor, democrat gavin newsom in florida, governor, republican president ial hopeful ron desantis say they are interested in the formal newsom. Desantis inperson debate. A Newsom Campaign spokesperson confirms the newsom team sent fox news channel. This 3 page letter proposing just how such a debate would work. First newsom is calling for the debate to air live this november on fox news moderated by conservative political commentator sean hannity per newsoms proposal. The debate would last 90 minutes with no Live Audience and no notes allowed for either candidate. Each would be allowed 90 seconds to answer questions. And another 90 seconds to respond to the other candidates answers during an interview with hannity on wednesday, desantis said he is interested but did not elaborate on the specific time or date. Desantis later wrote this on twitter. Quote, the debate between california and florida is already over. People have beon voting with their feet for years. But the debate about the future of our country is one we need to game to talk about my plans to reverse a decline in this country anytime anywhere. Because ive the best vision for the future of our country. This is probably good for both of them and the sense that they both want a Higher National profile Loyola Law School professor jessica levinson, i dont think that a lot of independent voters will be swayed one way or another. But i think this is a way of trying to shore up support for both of them, both their base. Governor newsom is not running for president , but hes running this kind of shadow National Campaign where he wants to continue to be a national figure. Governor desantis is flagging in the polls and he is running for president , but hes not gaining an enormous amount of traction against former president trump. So i think for both of them to be elevated to this point where theyre having a debate that many of us are anticipating on national tv is probably a win by tom wallace. Kron 4 news. Tonight well see some of the clouds increase as we get into the overnight. Some patchy over not neck. Fog will be out there for us. And then tomorrow were going ho be warm to hot this weekend inland. Also going to see our air quality slip just a little bit. Now. Right now, were looking good. But as you know, there are wildfires that are out and about around up in oregon, down in parts of Southern California and even locally in san jose. We have a brush fire that theyre dealing with. Thankfully looks like theyre doing pretty good. Its its 60 containment. But what that means is that, you know, as we get into tomorrow, were going to see some of our air quality slip into moderate and even further as we get to sunday and monday where everyone is forecast to be into moderate. Happening now, thousands of workers in the bay areas largest city are casting their vote on whether they want to go on strike their contract with the city of san jose expired a month ago. Jose mayor matt mahan joins us live now to discuss the latest issues impacting his city and share some solutions that are on the table right now there. Thanks so much for being here. Thanks for having me. All right. So wed like to start off with those headlines week. I just mentioned involving your city workers, a 4500 of them are voting this week on whether or not to go on strike. We wont know the results of the vote until monday, but if they stop working, this could impact City Services in a pretty big way. Could you walk us through how negotiations are going now . There just for context, a majority of our bargaining units which different unions representing different groups of city workers. Have current contracts. And just this year we settled for contracts with additional bargaining unit. So theyre still for that are outstanding. Unfortunately, those groups walked out of mediation after just one meeting. And, you know, the tough reality is that. The city is offering a 5 raise, which is exactly where the county just settled with some of its big bargaining units to go beyond 5 in this economy. We will have to make difficult tradeoffs. Weve been working very hard to be creative to look at solutions that say in the out years and years, 2, 3 of the contract. If theres more revenue than expend expected, then we can do a larger raise. But in year one for us to give more than a 5 raise will have to identify painful cuts. We have to reduce staffing and police and fire cut Library Hours or pay few roads. And these are essential services that our residents also rely on. So without a deal thats fair for everyone. We have a great workforce here. They deserve a raise. Thats what were offering them. I just dont see how we go beyond 5 without having to cut services, which is not a position in of us want to be yeah, it sounds like unions that are still outstanding the city hasnt reached a deal with yet. Theyre calling for a 7 pay theyre also calling for increased paid family leave you know, how confident are you at this point that a deal can be reached with you mention that it would be difficult to go beyond that 5 . Thats exactly right. I do want to note that the city offered an additional 3 weeks of paid parental leave, which is a significant increase. And its a commitment we should make as parent with young children. I know how important that paid parental leave is in terms of the gap between 7 and 5 . Our estimate is that we are over 20 Million Dollars apart. And as i mentioned, thats a substantial amount of money for a city of santa event of our size. That would mean significantly reducing Library Hours or staffing in critical city service area. So i dont see how we get to 7. I mentioned, i think its really possible that when we look at years, 2, 3 of this contract week, our budget projections could be too conservative. Its possible that revenue will come in higher than expected in which case i think we should offer workers an automatic trigger and say we will pay more will will be able to go a little higher than we expected. If the revenues there, we can do it without Cutting Services or taking on debt and unfunded liabilities as weve done in the past. And frankly paid quite a price for do it. Okay. Well stay in touch with your to follow up on that story. But we like to switch the topic now to homelessness. Among like to ask you about a new law that youre proposing that would homeless encampments in rvs near schools. Why do you think that this in particular is so important and what you say to critics who say that this violates the rights of the unhoused. Well, first on on that last point you just made. I firmly believe that we have to do 2 things at the same time we have to increase places for people to go that are safe and managed and where people can connect with Supportive Services from job training and and drug treatment to just basic necessities like meals and sanitation. So i think its important that were offering People Services and safe places to go at the same time, we have a responsibility for protecting the community and minimizing the impacts of homelessness. And that starts with our children. I was inspired by a group of students at kipp collegiate out in the side. San jose who began organizing because of the significant impacts that encampment right next to their school was having on their learning environment. They were finding needles on their lunch tables. They had folks sleeping in their bathrooms. They had repeated breakins and thefts. And so i went out to the school along with the Council Member from the district Council Member ortiz. We brought in san jose police. We sat down with School Administrators and students. This is really a studentled effort. As we talk to students, we agreed that one thing we can do without criminalizing homelessness is just create a reasonable buffer zone around schools and daycares and say the places where our children are learning and being cared for should safe. They should be welcoming safe, friendly environments. And all that means is we are asking that our colleagues enforce an ordinance to create an ordinance and enforce it. That would say 150 feet from the Property Line of any school or daycare in the city. We will not allow encampments. Thats not criminalizing homelessness. It is just creating a very modest buffer one so that students can feel safe getting on and off campus each day and and feel like that. Theyre in a protected learning environment. I think its the least we can do. And frankly, we have a lot more work ahead of us to to really balance those 2 sides of the equation, more places for people to go and then Holding People responsible for coming indoors. All right. Were going head to our next question in interest of time. Mister it would want to talk about another chronic issue for the city of san jose. The topic of, you know, deadly traffic collisions that involved pedestrians in late july. You san jose mark, more than 2 dozen crashes, a baby was involved in a recent one. And we know that alcohol and speed are not always factors. So what is the reason that this keeps on happening . Yes, that recent death involving a child is just obviously devastating to my my heart goes out to their their family. You know, we are. Were taking a number of measures in a significant number of these cases. Speeding is involved about a 3rd of these cases. Ive been a big advocate for speed safety cameras, which we would need the state legislature to enable us to do that is working its way through the legislature as we speak. We are making investments in the built environment. We have a vision 0 plan. Were investing millions of dollars improving lighting narrowing streets where appropriate, adding protected bike lanes. Were also doing education campaign. Fundamentally what we need is behavior change, particularly on the part of drivers. We need drivers to slow down to pay attention, to not pick up the cell phone and to follow our traffic laws. And that means enforcement. Ive also led the charge to double the rate at which we Hire Police Officers so that we can build up our Traffic Enforcement unit once again. Course, we also need pedestrians to be very alert and careful. Our roadways are not as safe as they should be. And so we encourage people to use crosswalks and to really be very alert when when walking near and across our roadways, its going to take investments in technology. The built environment, more enforcement and Public Education to create the kind of behavior change that we need to ensure that everyone safe on our roads. All right. San jose mayor matt mahan, thank you for your time and perspective today. Thanks for having me. Now to our next story. Former President Donald Trump appeared in a dc courtroom yesterday to answer for charges he conspired to overturn the 2020 election. If you might want to take a of a plane, you can help in that. Take a spin around the bay for if you have wayne does has a plan. You can somebody im sure youre in the various someone. In fact, i dont im sure a lot of you dont either. But youre going. You should be doing pretty good weatherwise. There is a little bit of Severe Weather in the northeast session. I should mention also obviously weve got the heat there in the South Central part of the country that is then going to roll right over towards the west as we get towards the weekend. But for today, pretty nice out there. 75 in la 83 in fresno, sacramento, 81 degrees. And lets take a live look around the vacancy. Got a lot of sunshine out there. Half moon bay still sit in the clouds. Golden gate bridge has a little marine layer there. But everybody else. Kind of looking good in the sunshine 84 in antioch right now. This my warmest spot on the map that inner east bay. Weve got some nice 60s 70s around the bay itself. Mid 70s up in the north bay and south bay about the same story Mountain View about 77 a little breeze, but not too much. Just how we like it this afternoon. Well see that pick up a little bit. Its nice to still get a little more of that on shore flow. And then that High Pressure that i mentioned is going to start rolling towards us. And as it does, its going to bump the temperatures up at Southern California will bear the brunt of this. But we, too, are going to see our temperatures start to roll up. So i mentioned Southern California because they do have the excessive heat warning that is that will go into effect on saturday right through monday for them. But for us, were not seeing quite that extreme of heat, but yet we are still going to see some heat. So this is tomorrow where youll see the inner east bay roll into those mid 90s and well see kind of a low 90s in the north bay. More 80s in the south bay. Really pleasant around the bay itself with 60s and 70s. Then things are going to change a little bit. I wanted to use my lottery forecast because i know weve got a lot of future galion air is out there. We may even have some in our own office here at kron. 4 will see what happens. But temperatures are going to roll up. We look at concord is an example to about 101. On your sunday. So that could be the hottest day. But frankly, saturday and monday, also hot. So well get back to kind of normal as we head into next week. Then i wanted to look ahead at the country for the next week, right . Were going now from august 10th to 14th and you can see how staying cool south staying warm. Were going to be just a little bit above normal. So were going to go from hot to kind of normal and then maybe a little bit above normal, according to these longterm prediction. So just to give you a sense of where were at for august, so there is the heat saturday sunday and monday. So make your plans accordingly for your weekend. Make sure outside of the hottest part of the day. But other than that, i hope you enjoy and have a great weekend will start cooling down as we get into next week. Back to you. All right. Thank you.
