Well, and shes doing this all to raise awareness about Pediatric Cancer Research. My marriage joins us live now to share more. Good morning to you my morning. Just incredible. At your age. Having accomplished so much already. It tell us a bit about what your motivation is, why youre doing all of this. Yeah, i think its really a mixture different things. Part of it is definitely a fundraising and knowing that all of them i am raising is going to really important cause and its helping a lot of people. And the swimming, i really enjoy it. Im not really kitchen going. Just knowing that im getting to receive these cool places and have is really awesome experiences. And knowing that getting sing that i love and still helping other people really gets going and motivates me to stay with and you just got back from the historic swim around manhattan. All right. Thats nearly 30 mile. Haha, how are you feeling of about after after that long swim . I feel actually fine. I had a little bit of soreness for the first day. And otherwise, its been completely if i i took antibiotics for 3 days after and otherwise. Pretty easy. Wow. Okay. Pretty easy. And not everyone could say whats whats your mindset when youre in the water and you are going through such a its a tough swim. My youth one could say 30 miles, right . So whats whats the mentality that you have in mind to keep yourself going . It really depends on the swim in the for the swim specifically. Most of it actually wasnt bad. I had a really fun time. Those different than most teams ive done and that i could kind of track my progress and the bridges that i was passing. And just that i could see land the whole way around. So i kind of watch as they passed different theres one hour that it was pretty kind of towards the end, right . Can really tell was going on. And i really tried to focus on just taking one stroke after the other and looking out for my kayak and thinking of all the names on my cap and why im doing honoring and thus women really just thinking to take one more stroke in just trying. Go one stroke forward and not think about how much more i had left or how big the water was. Yeah. So many people have this fear of the open ocean. Me. Whats your advice to those who, you know, we love to swim out in the open water, but are just apprehensive about it. I think take it slowly and if youre scared at first, thats like so normal. I was terrified of open water. When i started the first sons that i did and that they were maybe a mile and i cried the entire time for like 3 years old. I was so and just putting myself out there and trying again, even though i knew that i hadnt had a good experience before i found that i ended up loving it. Just took a little bit of time and really going back and having perseverance and trying to just keep going, even if it wasnt great. The first 2 times continuously facing that fear and then learning to get acclimated and just over coming in at that point, how did you get started . Marathon swimming. So i some of this foundation calls from across america that raises money for Pediatric Cancer Research, using open water swimming and so i was 9. I did my first swim. And i just said small swims 9 to 12. I did this every year. Its about a mile in the bay in pretty warm water in september. So i wear wet suits and then at the very beginning of covid on the day of lockdown, i signed up for my in tahoe and i think because we were in lockdown, i had nothing else to do. So i spent a lot of time and i had a fantastic experience with that. I love being in tahoe. I loved the experience and the just how beautiful it was that it was something for me to do and kind of since then ive falling more in love with it and getting to adventure and see new things and try different things. And its incredible. Why Pediatric Cancer Research . Was that a cause . Its so important to you. I think that cancer, so that touches everybody regardless of the fair pay. Should a survivor, someone who knows someone else cancer because it hurts everyone. Matter how youre related to it, i think pediatric cancer, especially is really hard for everyone. Its for young kids. And i know a few kids that have gotten treatment at ucsf, which is where all the money that i reason goes knowing that its going to people that i know and people like the people i know im really encourages me. Undermines be that the people that have cancer loved by other people and just to try and help them out in some way. Thats a beautiful message. And you have any other swims that youre really hoping to do. Whats next for you . Really . What are your big goals . So i really want to finish the ocean 7, which is a set of 7 swims in the world. Ive done 2 of 5 in the market channel. Catalina channel and my next big one, which will also complete. They hit a triple kind of open water swimming for me next. Summers thanks, ok, well, were going to stay in close touch with you. You look forward to seeing how those winds go, youre going to conquer them. Im sure swimmingly. Haha. All right. My the youngest person to swim the 21 mile catalina channel. Shes going just continue breaking records. Thank you so much for joining us this morning. We appreciate it. Thank you for having me. Prison reform advocates say will greatly benefit incarcerated parents and their kids. Governor newsom has officially signed legislation allowing prisoners to serve time in facilities closer to their kids. Capitol correspondent wallace has reaction from the Bay Area Assembly member who proposed this idea. 200,000 children. Thats a number of kids in california estimated to have parents incarcerated in state prisons. 2019, the California Department of corrections and rehabilitation or cdcr released data showing only 25 of people incarcerated in the state are placed in institutions within 100 miles of their home. The conclusion from that report, the farther prisoners are from home to fewer visitors. They receive. But now a new bill the governor signed this week will require the state to place incarcerated parents or legal guardians of children under the age of 18 in the correctional facility closest to the childs home. This will make a huge difference for families San Francisco democratic Assembly Member matt haney authored the legislation. He points out that received unanimous support from republicans and democrats alike. This will impact hundreds of thousands of kids. It will allow them to do better at an opportune to maintain a connection with their moa and their that we know from other research, if totally sever that connection its going to make it a lot harder for the kid and its going to less likely that the person comes out. Prepared to better themselves being there for that kid is a huge part of what motivates a parent. Of course, there are exceptions. Haney says this legislation will not apply to parents convicted of crimes against their kids and those convicted of other violent and related offenses. As for logistics, that could impact prison heavy parts of the state. What happens if a prison . Is overcrowded or at full capacity. If there are factors around for space, will have to one of the things that considered in terms of whether that possible or not. Looking at the larger picture, this is a winwin for the kids, but its also when for Public Safety, crime is out of control throughout the state. And when people go into prison, we make sure they come out better than they went in. We need to make sure that they are rehabilitated and need a criminal activity altogether have hope and a connection with their loved ones. And for most people, thats their kids. And the weather is looking gorgeous as well along the coast, at least around San Francisco. Dave, what else should we know . Well, good morning, stephanie. Good morning. Everybody saw that fog bank off towards the distance and were in the thick of it right here at the Golden Gate Bridge. Checking in. This will course mix out as we get to the afternoon. But keep in mind in your travels, along with a lot of the bay bridge typical bit in the afternoon evening. Youre going to get that strong onshore flow, particularly here. This is basically the highway for flow off towards the carquinez strait. So well see that today tomorrow with what were looking at getting into the early next week. A cool down. As i mentioned, dropping tahoe numbers into the 70s. We are throwing some clouds and there isnt a little verbal addendum. We should mention there is the risk of maybe a popup, a little isolated shower. Cant rule that out as we get to wednesday tuesday zone, maybe even a thunder shower. With all of that to you. Just get when you go of that feel like this. It just tends to stir up the atmosphere a little bit more. So this is the moisture were talking about, the outflow or whats left over from the showers in arizona and has to take the highway a long way. So itll take a while to get up here by early next week. 78 currently now for any act, mostly 60s east up to the north bay. We got 54 santa rosa. 56, San Francisco in 66. Meanwhile for san jose, lets hand it over to the models. You see what im talking about. This intrusion. Several ways of but flowing upwards to the middle of the week, then funding at the parts. And were looking at another scenario into next weekend, which may potentially bring us a heat spike. Lets kind of zone in on that a little bit. First of all, first, things first, the flow pattern of the exhaust clouds here a little bit. Then we get into the weekend and this high. Yeah, kuz starts to become a hot dome boom right about there to Southern California by next of the following tuesday. So do this in the weekend. Maybe that heat spike into the early next week. So thats upstream here. Theyll start again well in august. Well see if that all pans out. The highs been moving a little bit. Latest model runs 4 zone forecast. 66 San Francisco, a lower 60s off towards the coast. Late day clearing also responsible. 73 going on for burning again. 77 foster city, a lot of lower 80s heading down here, although Mountain View coming in. 75 lower 80s in the south bay. 92 morgan hill, east bay shoreline, upper 70s. We might papa 90 here or there for tri valley. But most readings hanging in the 90s that look great ease rather 90 for walnut creek. 91 conquered 73 for oakland. The les, what . 70 to 88 fairfield about 81 for napa in 94 santa rosa. 7 day forecast. Theres the drop tuesday and wednesday. Mid 80s takes a while to recover. But it does into next weekend away. We go to about 94 so and that may continue into sunday with this latest heat spike, which were monitoring to see exactly where the highest place. You know, were marching to an ai machine civilization, but weve got to take care of our meat. First of our bodies, stephanie. All right, dave, quite an intro. Their will for your health over the months. Our Health Expert karen owoc has been showing us weighs on a ways to predict our longevity with different function, tests right . And today shes back with yet another test that you can perform easily at home to help determine your life expectancy. Sounds really interesting. So, karen, welcome back. Its a lovely to see thank you. Thank you, guys. And so what have you got for us today . So this is the sitting rising test kit. Sometimes its not so easy, but but what you can its its going to evaluate. It varies. Its a very simple test is going to evaluate value. A muscle strength and power as well as flexibility, flexibility in your hips to needs your ankles also balance week. Denson balancing this esther balance. And then as well as body composition. If you have a higher percentage of muscle mass, youre going to score better on this test, ok . And so we want to get a position where we have that stronger of muscle mass actually okay. Exactly. So the way youre going to start out were going to cross your legs. Okay, one, make sure you have no shoes and no socks on. So with cross, your legs and then youre just going to sit down the and then youre going to stand up. Oh, wow, im i dont think id be able to do that. I mean obvious at my heels and i have a dress on so i cant join you. Yeah you know you the fact rebels you that is very impressive. Yeah. I dont think id be able to my and im on my peloton every we have modifications. We have ways that that can make you stronger. Kids. It is difficult for. Interestingly, men who are between the ages of 16 to 25 they continually score very high at out of 10. But by the time theyre 55. Only 8 of men and women can do interesting. So so that that showed your muscle strength, your flexibility or balance deteriorates you get older, ok . So one thing, if you cant do that, and if you have any kind of me or hip injury or r, you know, we placement then you might need a little bit of help. So make sure you have someone there to help you get down and up. Okay. So the next modification would be to do it on a step. Something thats higher. It could even be higher. Whatever works for you and do the same thing. So sit down like a little stool. Yeah. And or bench, even you cant get all the way down work way up its very test, its pretty its pretty hard. It can be pretty hard. But theres ways to strengthen yourself to get to that point where you can score better. And so whether thing that youre doing was using your like muscles, right leg ended legs core flexibility, the ballots still. So heres what you start out with 10 points. Not heavy to keep score, ok . So you start out with 10 points. 5 points going down. 5 points going up, ok . Attacks a month now, every time you touch a body part, put your hand down. Youre going to take off one point. Okay. If i kind of legal and lawful, thats a half a point. Okay. So i mean do it again and you can keep score. Okay. Okay. So im going to go down and i have to touch. Mine might need. Okay. So thats 1. And then i put my hand out to yesterday and now im going to try and get up. I have to put my i put my knee downs 3, 3, and im while u. S. 3 and a half. Half up and im not ok. So that was 3 and a half points. So what is that . So thats your score is 6 and a half. So if your score is 3 and a half to 7 and half, that means you need help. Okay . Yes, thats problematic. So you need to set up for my fourweek longevity. Want k . Yeah, you really need to work on and that means your fitness level. Is week. So what can people do to and that also means that also means set your 2 times more likely to die within 6 years compared to someone that can score 8 to 10, ok . And now if you score less than 3, then years, you are 5 times more likely to die within 6 years compared to some of that could do you 8 to 10 escort 8 to so and just take those with a grain of salt. Its an indicator that you really need to work at increasing strength, your balance and flexibility, ok, got it and different exercises that you recommended for us over the months can help see. Okay. So this isnt a yes so what . Oh, wait actually. Have you stand up . They sewed cross your legs. So if you cant do it on fleur question legs, you can do it in front of the chair okay. And then to sit down in the chair and do it this way instead of all the way down on the practice getting up. And then down and do this as an exercise. Okay. And also get up and then cross the other leg over because most people have one one leg. Thats in one side. Thats either stronger. Okay or week or so. This is something another. If people cant do it on the floor, they can get a check for their ok, got it. Because for every point that they increase, thats 21 . Lower risk of death. Ok . So its significant. Say one is you want increase your score. So this is one way do it. And then if thats still difficult, then put your feet and cross your feet. Okay. Because it is sometimes thats even hard for people. So yeah. Last. Okay. And then so do it on for some people. You could also do a onelegged squat. I okay dont know if i can be that in so there are ways to modify, ok, and there are ways to get stronger, ok, doubt, having to go all the way down that your way up. Okay. So the so that exercise that that will also help. I imagine strengthen the different muscle groups that we really want to target. Yes, crease the life to get our points up in an increase. The left expect. Yes. So the recent that it decreases your your risk of death. Increases your risk of death. Is that when you dont have the muscle strength when you dont have the flexibility and the balance your risk of falling is a lot youre not able to do a lot activities of daily living. Youre just not moving a whole lot. So thats why that it affects your longtime buddy, ok, an important reminder to increase the strength of our muscles when we can and do basic easy exercise. Exactly. Exactly. All right. Kara walker, Health Expert, thank you so much for your time. Youre very welcome. Okay. We will be welcome. Okay. We will be right back. Want more from your vitamins .
