Degrees right now santa rosa in petaluma each at 34 degrees. So as you get out into the car may be warming up a couple extra minutes, i know that was rebeccas advice a few minutes ago, youre still some pretty easy going conditions on our roads and definitely no fog out there. Either yeah nothing in your way right now a lot of cars the visibility is great, its just a little bit cold of course youre see a crank up those car heaters for sure. The door right now though look at this its a nice a shot of bay bridge toll plaza approach. And this is our camera looking out across the macarthur maze here nothing in your way for westbound 80 your commute is going to be a straight shot in the San Francisco across the upper deck and its going to be a total drive time about 10 minutes over to the fremont street exit, switching things over now to the cemetery rich men rather the Richmond Center fell bridge now west bound 5. 80 looking great theres more cars on the roadway, the lefthand side of your screen that is the commute direction. But west bound 5. 80 remains problem free as you try to make your way up to the north bay total drive time right now standing at 7 minutes all have the san mateo bridge and the golden gate coming up in just a bit james darya thanks so its 6 oh one lets get to our top story this morning which is the fact that more than 2800 people died of coronavirus yesterday alone. Well set a new record of more than a 185,000 new Coronavirus Infections reported its hard its hard because its been dragging on and the months go by anything said they better. And its exactly the opposite its getting worse. Santa clara county is seeing record covid cases and hospitalizations and there are new outbreaks in Nursing Homes and long care facilities and large outbreaks at homeless shelters as well we have kron will tran live in san jose now to talk more about. All of this good morning. Well. That was the fear james in duryea that those places would come down with covid19 which is why the Health Department about 9 months ago they preemptively told those places how to take care of the people inside but even then we are seeing explosion in cases at the homeless shelters in exactly 2. Nursing homes that have over 200 cases as far as a homeless shelter, 56. People have come down with covid19 that includes obviously the people who who work there and the people who are staying there and then as far as the homeless shelters. We are talking the amber woods gardens nursing home that particular place has about a 150 cases and then another place which theyre not saying the name of thats another 86 cases over 200 at those 2 facilities alone and they say this is not even into deep into the woods as far as covid19 cases, the Health Department they are doing their very best to try to slow it down but theyre saying the reason why those particular facilities are seeing an explosion in cases. So many people are coming and going. Cases rise in the community. That also means that there are more cases they get introduced into these current settings more what we provide we provide testing resources. So we can identify everyone whos been infected. And we provide technical in terms of helping them. Identify of Infection Prevention measures that they can implement to prevent the spread. Okay, so lets continue to talk about the nursing centers, the people who did come down with covid19 the Staff Members they have been removed from those facilities so they have isolated that as far as some of the other people theyre doing their very best to try to treat them at this point were not hearing of any fatalities from those particular cases at the 3 facilities. But lets talk about the fatalities county wide. It is surreal james and your yulia sevices my camerawoman this morning and we were talking about we re here earlier this year when 2440 cases seen mind blowing. Now if youre waking up this morning in Santa Clara County, youre sitting at more than 36,600 cases over the past 9 months in close to 500 people died from covid19 and he probably will get even worse. Back to you unfortunately i think you may be right well, thank you very much for the update. The outbreaks in Santa Clara County are not limited to Nursing Homes covid cases are also being reported and juvenile detention facilities. Its the first outbreak in Santa Clara Countys Juvenile Hall and William F James ranch facilities. More than a dozen people, including youth and staff are infected. One deputy public defender believes the county has failed to keep incarcerated youth safe and says now is the time to release those in custody because of covid. Unless there is a demonstrated need to hold these in in custody, them they should be out because the facility has proven itself incapable of protecting them and keeping them healthy hes already vulnerable kids have been subject to this deadly virus. Santa clara countys adult jails have already experienced outbreaks and they have been releasing inmates to bring down the risk of transition transmission that San Mateo County Health Officials have seen a slow and steady rise in hospitalizations. Overall capacity right now is only about 70 but in anticipation of a surge in the coming weeks officials have moved some equipment from the San Mateo County event center to hospitals across the country or the cross the county i should say event center was set up months ago to treat patients if hospital so ran out of beds, but so far it hasnt needed to be used. Officials say they even have more options if the number of cases rises beyond current hospital capacity. In San Mateo County. Our capacity is great we can actually stand up. The national guard. We can actually use on 369 of that hospital which is seen hospital. All patients being treated in San Mateo County or local residents. But it is possible that additional patients could be brought in from other areas if needed. Well here are the latest local numbers as it relates to the coronavirus california has a state now has seen more than one 0. 2 million cases since the pandemic began with more than 19,000 deaths so far as for the bay area were looking at more than a 156,000 cases with more than 1900 people died from coronavirus 6 or 7 is the time and the bay area could be ringing in the new year with a new stay at home order because of the surge in coronavirus the governor says. That theyre going to be new rules. If hospital capacities and icy use or slammed for a room for patients. The stay at home order goes into effect by region. If there are fewer than 1515 if theyre less than 15 . Of hospital beds left in that region. Right now in the bay area. Weve got 25 of the beds are Still Available and icu so we havent reached that 15 threshold. But at this rate if we see these hospitalizations continue to increase the order could go into effect in the bay area by the end of this month. And it would last for 3 weeks when it happens. And it would mean many different businesses would close that have been opened so far and are open right now bars wineries hair salons barber shops. If the order comes those would all close retail would stay open, but they would be limited to 20 capacity cdc more lines at the stores that want to go to. And the big change would be restaurants. If this kicks in restaurants, you can only have take out so no more Outdoor Dining even. Once these new rules kick in. Business owners are sounding off on the possibility of this type of shut down we spoke with the manager of a day spa in downtown lafayette. She says the governors announcement is already confusing her clients. A lot of our clients. By canceling theyre trying to get in sooner before the closure happens. Countless businesses like this were first to close for months the first time around in the pandemic and remember theyre not closed yet. When and if that order comes though it will happen within 24 hours. Well the other big part of the stories that San Francisco leaders might actually act sooner than the state in banning Outdoor Dining might even come as soon as this weekend thats what some Restaurant Owners are hearing which means that today could be the last day you can enjoy eating outside we have kron 4 Sarah Stinson live in San Francisco now with the latest on the story, good morning sara. James weve been on edge all week weve been saying mayor london breed and Health Officials are going to have a big announcement theyre going to put more restrictions on the city on top of the purple to restrictions on top of whatever the governor says and were thinking today could be that day because thats a Restaurant Owners are hearing look at this restaurant here on union street you can see how much work they put into it they have christmas decorations. They have heat lamps in here, its covered rain or shine they would be prepared to see people here. However, no matter what the weather is they could just not have to be able to at all it could be banned on top of everything as we know the order hasnt been triggered get for San Francisco, the stay at home order by the governor that wont happen until we have 15 of the icu beds left thats expected to happen within the next week week or 2 thats what theyre predicting. However, Restaurant Owners say theyve been told by Industry Leaders that the city is planning to shut down dining before that by midnight tonight. So to today and tonight could be the last opportunity for people of course before 10 00pm to eat outdoors and for restaurants to utilize their outdoor seating boxes theyve spent thousands of dollars on the setups that restaurants have done have been so creative so to their just making sure that people feel comfortable because it has been chilly especially when the sun goes down Restaurant Owners tell us this is extremely frustrating to hear that it could be shut down before the stay at home order in goes in place. I mean its tough its so so tough to to put all that energy into building this winter ice parklet that we have over here were going to weigh all of options whether we close during the or we stick you know delivery options, but delivery options are really feasible for us. We have reached out to the Mayors Office to see if they are in fact going to shut down Outdoor Dining at midnight, but we have not heard back yet either way its looking not so good for Restaurant Owners theyre either going to have to shut down at midnight. Some time this weekend or within the next week from the governors stay at home order then they have to switch to take out, but as you just heard from that restaurant owner. Maybe theyll to shut down altogether. Reporting live in San Francisco Sarah Stinson kron 4 news right. You do need to know that we do have some advisories that have been extended into the afternoon today were continuing to see high swells and sneaker waves right along the shoreline, these swells are actually peaking during overnight hours and will gradually diminish the rest of the day today but do watch out for dangerous rip out there along the coastline advisories remain in effect until 03 00pm today. They were initially set to expire yesterday. So this is an extension of those dangerous conditions along the coast. Elsewhere in the bay area really nothing to know except sunshine 60s stuff, weve got used to lately futurecast shows you that we are going to be looking at dry skies, not just through the day today but on to the weekend tomorrow sunday remains dry but i am expecting a few more clouds to close out the weekend on sunday. High pressure is in place were staying mild or staying sunny with this highpressure youre going to notice some haze in place yet again today this High Pressure results and sinking in stagnant air and that has resulted in some smoggy conditions in parts of the bay area so less than ideal air quality thats one of the downsides of the High Pressure that we do have the downside of the dry conditions as of course the deepening drought that were in the midst your latest Drought Monitor just released yesterday shows you that extreme drought continues in red for the north bay and deepening severe drought for the rest of the bay area in orange. Now thats the downside of the dry skies. Obviously weve had great weather for all your errands in your yard work lately its 50s and 60s for your highs yet again across the bay area. On indoor worshiping yeah, this comes days after the 9 justices recently ruled in favor of churches and synagogues in new york. We have doug johnson with more on what this ruling now means for californias houses of worship. Todays Supreme Court order may not have been exactly what pasedena base Harvester Church what case against californias covid19 restrictions. It did not get the same ruling the court made in a similar case in new york state they said were not going to give you that were going to do is were going to send this case back to the court that at this and theyre going to have to decide whether in fact they grant order or not light of the decision that leading the professor of law Leslie Jacobs says the order could be seen as encouraging for the churchs case will require the lower courts here and probably other places to more of these. To look at our states order and the claim by harvest in light of what the Supreme Court said with regard to the new york or. Whoever jacobs points out the circumstances in new york and california are very different new york severely limited capacity at houses of worship across the board based on mapped out zones and in your case had evidence of discrimination against the Orthodox Jewish community there some evidence on the record statements and then also the way the lights were try that made the courts this looks like maybe youre treating religion specially. Jacob says californias tier system is much different from new yorks zone system. Because it adds explanations for each tier ever use in the order had it hears has offered reasons and arm will say. I was off and do exist. Plus jacobs says the court will also recognize californias warmer climate. I park service says i will point out california got so thats a little more possible to court reconsider but in the end jacob says that harvests rocks legal argument is a strong one base on the United States constitutions First Amendment claiming governor newsoms order is illegal. Because it treats churches differently from other nonreligious groups and activities clean is and shopping malls can at a lower percentage, but some activity can have fair and retail and they say thats not fair there is no difference or will be looking at. Not a bad way to get into the month of December John yeah, it certainly has been nice weather to get out there spend december under the sunlight will the rest of the country looks at some snowfall. We certainly havent had any of that here in the bay area nor in the Sierra Nevada over the course of the month so far weve been dry for a bit now, nice weather to get outside and do some shopping for sure i did a little bit of that yesterday under the sunshine that we had you can see your sitter tower cam here shows you those clear skies overhead were off to another clear starts today, so no fog across the bay, there is some out in the central valley, if you happen to be heading out that direction even our coastal spots though are starting off nice and clear this morning. Before theyre allowed back in class that testing for students is in the larkspur corte madera School District up in marin county and thats where kron fours reyna harvey is standing by with more on the story good morning. Rhonda. The morning and its why the district is calling this their thanksgiving reentry planned before the students even went on their thanksgiving break. They were talking to the parents about ways that they can keep their students safe and we just keep the school doors open now they were telling parents make sure you limit your travel outside of the area also keep those bubbles small with the people in your immediate family, so theyre going to be offering that coronavirus testing here today thats going to be at 8 oclock out here on that one of the locations this is going to be at the town park and the san clemente park. This also has the school is starting back, you know the test how thats going to go down today, theyre going to be self administer so they actually put out a request for parent volunteers to come down to help with that now the students have been back in school for the past 7 weeks 5 days out of the week its one of the schools in the bay area that have been able to do that and so thats why the school so strongly recommending the students come down here and receive testing but we know that the staff well be tested. Now the results are going to be sent to the family members and the staff on december 5th so students will know the results by them but again you can come down theyre asking people to have their Insurance Information that starts at 8 oclock soon as that happens well be talking to some of the people who come down here today, but again just if theres any confusion. It is strongly recommended for the students and again the staff throughout the district will be tested but for now reporting on here marine Reyna Harvey Kron 4 news all right, thank you very much the struggles of students having to do the Remote Learning is prompting some San Francisco leaders to push for teachers to move to the front of the line for covid vaccinations right after Health Care Workers kron fours Maureen Kelly reports. Im out in front of Daniel Webster Elementary School here for trail hill like all other San Francisco Public Schools, its closed and has been for many months because of the pandemic the students stuck at home doing distance learning. This week, San Francisco supervisor Hillary Ronen who is also the parent of a school a child introduced nonbinding resolution which if passed would urge the governor and the California Department of Public Health to prioritize Public School teachers and support staff for covid19 vaccinations. After Health Care Workers, the goal to help speed up the reopening of Public Schools because so many kids and their parents are having a hard time with distance learning. In some cases, its not just affecting the students education, but also the kids Mental Wellbeing parents who are are are telling me that their children are having mental health. Breakdowns that that everpresent before parents who quit their jobs because they can educate their time children and work at the same time it crisis. Ronan says shes concerned that the achievement gap that already exists will become a canyon shes reaching out to other lawmakers from around the state to pass similar legislation so that the message is heard loud and clear and the State Capitol the resolution was introduced this week it then goes to committee and is expected to be voted on december 15th. Maureen kelly kron 4 news. 6. 36 is the time as covid19 case counts and hospitalization numbers soar many bay area nurses say they. Theyre exhausted. Tammy bay checkey who you see there was well she spent 18 years as a registered nurse in intensive care units and this is her 4th year working at Kaiser Permanente in walnut creek. She says the hospital is short staffed and she and her colleagues are worried the Health Care System is at its breaking point. Were all working overtime were all working double shifts extortion. And it wears on you know you can do for a while i think doing this for over a year now for about a year now. And it just takes its toll not just the physical demand money. The emotional toll saying our patients struggle and you have their families their so its its a physical emotional strain. And nurses across the country really are pleading for hospitals to staff up almost all hospitals are dealing with nursing shortage is right now with the majority of travel nurses working in the midwest. San Francisco Mayor london breed is responding to criticism about her dining at the French Laundry in the north bay mayor breed tweeted quote this criticism is fair. It doesnt matter whether something is technically allowed or not i need to hold myself to a higher standard and well do better and then she went on to say what i especially regret is that the urgency of our Public Health message in this moment has never been more dire and my actions have distracted from that were in a much different place than even just a few weeks ago and we need everyone to do their part starting with me. When mayor breed attended that dinner indoor and Outdoor Dining was allowed in napa county but that wasnt what was out of bounds she should not have been with so many people outside her bubble. Another concern for Health Care Workers. The fact that is impacting people in some cases for a long period of time theyre called longhaulers. Theyre the people who continue to have medical issues even months after testing positive. We have lonnie wong with a closer look at their struggle. Ice chest started to her and i couldnt not right marino sean is the Antibody Test showed that the nasty flu like illness. She had back in february was actually covid19 i just cant almost immediately so why did she begin getting symptoms in august after multiple negative covid tests. Well sean is known as a longhaul victim of covid19 who still suffers its affects 9 months after being infected, we have patients who have minimal symptoms at first. And then 2 to 3 months later they start to with shortness of breath and chest and then there are those who survived the icu and never suffer from persistent symptoms down the road. So theres not really a rhyme or reason an initial severity of illness doesnt correlate with that persistence other symptoms can be extreme fatigue cognitive brain prolong loss of smell and taste lung problems and blood circulation issues. You see davis health has just started the clinic to study and treat the array of longterm medical problems caused by covid19. How many covid19 patients have persistent symptoms some of the literature is were in some chords are reporting, you know upwards of 20 after system symptoms but i you know really we dont have a good sense yet and its too soon to say how long some of the symptoms will last who shot a says she can attest that surviving covid19 is that like recovering from the common flu. This is just generation of the flu which youre going to get out front. You might not get over it the. We dont lonnie wong. Along with restaurants and theaters dance floors night clubs all across San Francisco been shut down since march, many of these. Places have been a staple from the city for decades, a fundraiser called revive the night is happening tonight through sunday to help several night clubs during this pandemic and mayor london breed gave 300 nightlife venues a tax break earlier this year to try to help them survive. That came out to a little more than 8,000. Of course it still has been cold enough for snow making to occur which has been really sparing those resorts because we actually do have some good coverage conditions due to snow in areas like sierra at tahoe where we are looking at still a pretty solid snow depth at the summit of around 18 inches and a lot of that at this point is because of that snow making last know at sierra at tahoe was on november 18th now so thats a while ago we do have 4 lifts open air their machine groomed slopes squab valley you saw your last snowfall on november 22nd, 10 lips open machine groomed as well and so the conditions at 24 inches. So that is a good solid base at the summit. Now rose november 22nd was your last know you still have a summit base at 24 inches of snow and north star also say your last november 22nd, it lifts open up there and an entire 36 open trails that is more trails and we had last week so we are making progress that snow making making a big difference. It has been chilly enough that we have which routes that wet bulb temperature the all important temperature to get to when you need to make that snow which has been occurring obviously Mother Nature is not cooperating we stay dry in the bay, the sierra also remaining dry. Futurecast shows that continuing through the weekend and as i mentioned your longrange forecasts are showing the likelihood of dry conditions all the way at this point nearing christmas time which is why on thats almost a whole month there since those november showers that we had 60s for your daytime highs across the bay area today conquered and san jose each at 66 oakland and San Francisco each at 64. You look ahead at the rest of your next 7 days does show some 70s early next week monday and tuesday in the low 70s with ample sunshine and of course dry conditions overhead. Inland lows remain in the 30s while bayside in coastal lows continue to fall into the 40s. Rebecca strom is in for robin this morning and how are the roads doing this friday. Things are looking a nice here nice and smooth 13 minutes for your san mateo bridge commute. Coming out of the east bay over to the peninsula, no issues on the flat section the high rise looks good. A total trip time of 13 minutes so far making that connection with one oh one speaking of getting to one o one in the north bay and some looking great here the Richmond Sandra fell bridge, nothing in your way no stalls, no accidents. A quick eightminute drive time to make your way up to that 1, one connector and to coming down from the north bay. Im not tracking anything that coming or and getting on to the Golden Gate Bridge.
