Just a week after being diagnosed with covid19 President Trump schedules and in person event at the white house for tomorrow. And a rally in florida on monday. Thank you for joining us on this friday night what a difference a week makes im grant lotus and im Vicki Liviakis and just a few hours ago the president made an appearance in his first televised interview. After his diagnosis. He credited his team of doctors and a cocktail of experimental drugs for feeling, good and strong in his battle against coronavirus kron fours Ella Sogomonian joins us live in the newsroom to bring us up to date on his condition l a this time last week he had just gotten to walter reed. Yeah i had already he says hes feeling. Good. President donald trump shared that his last treatment today and that he supposes its good to be president because he got the medical attention needed early on to regain his health quickly with few side effects. This segment advertised as a live medical screening was more of a tele Health Conference as a doctor asked him a series of questions. They went over the president s treatment how he felt after his diagnosis. It is progress today, President Trump saying that he feels good and strong after feeling not strong and low energy with a bit of congestion in his lungs which he felt was in very president ial part of his treatment including regeneron which is a transfusion. Well he called that a miraculous medicine and hes ready to share these healing methods that hes experienced for free for all americans. If youre really good, i feel very strong i know a lot of people that have had the covid or the china virus is i call it because it came from china. But i feel really really strong and a lot of people dont feel that way sometimes for a while afterwards but a very good and the doctors at walter reed were incredible they came from Johns Hopkins they came from everywhere its good to be president i guess, but and they were really great people id like to send it to everybody in fact ive said im going to send it to everybody. Thats got the problem and were going to send it free of charge. So the president took this time to defend a drive that he took around Walter Reed Medical Center in a car filled with security personnel as he waved at supporters said drew some controversy he explained that he thought it would be disrespectful to leave. Hanging outside day and night as he recovered inside the hospital so it was the least he could do live in the newsroom. Ella sogomonian kron 4 news thank u joining us now doctor bob wachter with the ucsf. Doctor we we really appreciate having you all on this is i good news you watch the president on air evaluation tonight. Your observations. I think you look pretty good. You know it you cant emphasize enough how difficult is how bad his prognosis was. A week he had a reasonable chance of having a very severe. And even infection and to see him 8 days out. Seem to be breathing comfortably is mental status seem to be back to his base line and you know hes not out of the woods. Hes got probably another week before youre confident that he wanted to read, looked about as good as he could look 8 days into the diagnosis. He obviously had treatment that normal folks dont get is there a concern in your mind that. Maybe President Trump supporters are going to see how quickly. And effectively he recovered and yeah they hear him say dont be afraid of covid dont let it dominate your life are you concerned that some of his supporters. Might i want to say maybe let your guard down but might fall victim to the coronavirus because of this incident. Yeah i would have hoped that he would have used this is teachable moment too let people know that this is serious stuff and if you dont Pay Attention to guidelines. You can get infected and whether it was the medicines that he got or just got lucky is impossible to but he did get lucky. He could have he could have died when he first got the infection he probably had a 5, 7 , chance of dying. We got sick enough to go to the hospital probably had a close to a 20 chance of dying. And so that meant he had better than even chance of making it its terrific for him, but if people take away the message. This is no big deal you dont have to be careful that is the wrong message. There are 30 or so other people who have been infected from a super spreader event and im pretty sure given the way the odds are that we will start hearing about other people who have much your forces. Then he has had it so i think there will be examples of of other people who. Make clear how how dangerous it still can be. Speaking of a super spreader event it sounds its a go for tomorrow, the president is planning to hold an event at the white house which is i think its safe to say its still considered a hot spot. Yeah, its still is there are you know so many recent infection is running around that building. He should still be quarantine he should still be isolated from other people with only people who have an absolute need to be in the same space is him doing that and people wearing full protective equipment when they see him use is not far enough to to be noninfectious are to be sure these noninfectious now to be you know completely honest if he is doing something where he seeing someone at a very far distance and hes outside. Its probably pretty safe and its probably no risk to him it really is a question. The risk to other people, but it would be better and certainly would be setting a better example if you continue to be isolated from other people but that obviously is not his way. Regardless of how President Trump are covered you allude to the fact maybe its luck maybe its one of the drugs are. Treatments he was given regeneron is the company that makes antibody cocktail seems to be the one it certainly the one the president is pointing to and some medical professionals seem to concur that that may have been key in his recovery, we know about antibody cocktail, how where it comes from theres been talk about embryos in stem cells and and what is your understanding of of that treatment and and how quickly it may be able to be scaled up to help a lot of people. Clinical research if we made decisions about which drugs to give because we gave a patient one patient one drug. And the patients got better and we sat there for everybody should be getting it well be making a lot of really really terrible decision so the fact that he did well maybe thats something to do with the drug the drug is looking promising in some early studies probably not a game changer. But certainly promising i suspect it will be proven to be effective and will ultimately there be approved by the fda to extrapolate that this was the drug in this was a miracle cure which he seems to have done thats just a thats an error in thinking. Its a its concentrated amount of 2 different antibodies, one of them does appear to be derived from fetal tissue, which of course is interesting given the politics of that theres another drug made by a Different Company lily that seems to be just as promising. And well you know he got 3 different drugs 2 of them have been proven to be effective and at the viral drug called remdesivir year a steroid drug called but as i said you know when he first got infected, we first got the diagnosis yet a 95 chance of doing well and recovering so the fact that he did well and recovered is is good news in may have had something to do with the drug but may just be that that was his good luck, i wouldnt i wouldnt go too going to the moon with a struggle, you its worth recalling that he had other miracle drugs that hes been touting over the last 6 to 8 months hydroxychloroquinn which has been proven to be not affect in fact a little bit dangerous convalescent plasma the jury is still out on. Of course he was touting the possibility of using bleach and all sorts of ways as potentially another miracle we have to be careful is not a scientist he doesnt think the way scientists think maybe the dribble turn out to be effective. I think it is promising, but its too too soon to set to tell for sure well the president today said hes off the drugs now today is his first day so i wait and see and see how he holds up. Yeah lets lets do that hes got hes is not out of the woods and its important to say that you know there are some people with covid who have a very bad second week. But the odds with each passing if he continues to feel well look well the odds continue to to stack up in his favor. All right doctor bob wachter ucsf chair of the department of medicine we appreciate your time as always. My pleasure thank you thank you for joining us. Well President Trump and joe biden will not be squaring off in their second president ial debate next week after all the commission on president ial debates. Cancel the event that was scheduled for thursday the cancellation comes after the commission announced yesterday that the debate well be done virtually. At that point President Trump heard that and said not going to do a virtual debate and he said im out if that is the format Catherine Heenan host of kron fours in siberia politics spoke with sonoma state professor David Mckeown today. He says the president needs all the debating he can get. The president is ready for any political consultant worth their salt would say look you got to get back out there and you got it you got it the baby and if doesnt want a virtual debate because he can the moderator 104 to 5 times as he that tuesday debate and yes, the find another avenue another way and tell us why it matters david, you know there are at least a few voters saying you know what were good with the debates weve seen enough and thanks that thats enough and why does it matter. All right so in general, we think that money doesnt matter in camp is this is the Political Science that money doesnt matter that campaign so matter that debates dont matter that Vice President ial selection sell better donald trump through all that out the window in 2016. And what it means is those things do matter in terms of setting the tenor and tone of the race democrats have to worry about having a sugar high about peaking too early and having that that that early kind of momentum go away and the president and his team need to drop their base and do a little bit better so there are like 5 independent voters who want to tell whats going on and they will help settle this election and move one way or another it is building to a blue wave that affects what happens senate that affects kind of what the size of the delegation in the house but democrats are sensing some momentum and the president has to blunt that thats why he has to go out and have at least one more debate if not 2. Instead of the formal debate next thursday, joe biden is now set to take part in a town hall. Instead as of. Right now there is still a 3rd scheduled final president ial debate that is set to be october 22nd in nashville. But obviously with the way things have gone recently and this year in general well just have to wait and see. About president thats what House Speaker nancy pelosi is talking a measure that would allow congress to remove a president from office she unveiled a bill today that would set up a commission to assess the president s ability to lead the country and ensure continuity of government under the 25th amendment of the constitution. Pelosi says she was inspired by the need for greater congressional oversight of Trumps White House it has always gratifying for me at 5 to go around the country and no matter the democrats or republicans right or left or whatever that the constitution, the rule. Or what relief to unify us. And this is a comfort to people that its not about whos in power saying i dont like the way he or she is acting. Its about a process that is bipartisan faced in the constitution. Giving congress the power to do this which congress has been done. Speaker pelosi has been raising questions about trumps Mental Fitness since his covid19 diagnosis and demanding more transparency about his health. Among the questions tonight could Speaker Pelosis idea actually take shape and if so is it a good idea kron fours dan kerman spoke to legal and political experts today he reports now from San Francisco. Never before has the 25th amendment been used to remove a president from office when power has been transferred to the Vice President. Its been voluntary or temporary their couple of instances. Were George W Bush had a colonoscopy and was an east asia in the 25th amendment was it about. President reagan was shot. It was implicitly invoked the not explicitly. But the 25th amendment does allow the transfer of power to take place without the president say. Under the current law. You take the Vice President in a majority of the cabinet. This would create an alternative to the cabinet. But the Vice President would still need to be part of it that alternative which is outlined in the 25th amendment would be a Bipartisan Commission selected by congress. Some political experts think its a wise idea what does is takes the heat off the captain the captain. Could have but you can imagine a circumstance where they would say very quietly and off the record to this commission, you know what were really worried about the president could you do something now so we dont have to actually be put in this terrible horrible getting rid of our boss. But you could do it. U c berkeley Political Science professor henry brady is the dean of the Goldman School of public policy. He says good idea or not the votes to create this commission arent there with the republican controlled senate. And President Trump in the white house still understands why Speaker Pelosi is proposing this its clearly a way to sort of pointing out that there may be a problem here. And therefore to signal to the American People you really really want to reelect this person to the presidency. The question is if this proposal goes nowhere as expected will it be reintroduced next year depending on whos elected president s in San Francisco. Dan kerman kron 4 news state officials are warning local election offices of possible disruptions and threats at polls. The secretary of States Office sent it out in a memo this week kron fours Capitol Bureau reporter Ashley Zavala has reaction now from state theres more interest theres more emotion theres more passion around this election. And its really important that we make sure that every california and have an opportunity to vote free in fear of intimidation assemblyman marc berman, the chairman of the Assembly Elections and Redistricting Committee said he was pleasantly surprised by the secretary of states memo. The memo sent earlier this week rehashed resources and laws relating to the consequences for those who try to intimidate threaten or block voters from casting ballots, including the felony charge associated with bringing a gun in or near the vicinity of a poll, the office acknowledged its never sentimental out like this before republicans say its excessive assemblyman James Gallagher is the vice chair of the elections and Redistricting Committees honestly i think a lot of this is being perpetuated by democrats. To scare people into you know into voting for their candidates of choice. Sand this is that theres people out there wanting to stop them from voting in that and thats all this made up the democrats point to the president s past comments urging his supporters to go to the polls and watch very carefully. They also cite recent concerns with possible, Trump Supporters being accused of attempting to kidnap the democratic governor of michigan it would be you know negligent of us not to be prepared for the worst i dont think theres any evidence that were going to have people intimidating voters legislative elections leaders anticipate most californians to vote by mail in sacramento, Ashley Zavala kron 4 news. Its now a category one storm, but it remains dangerous of course, blake brown joins us live from. Lake charles louisiana with the latest conditions. Blake how are things looking. Much different story than it was earlier this evening. Take a live look behind us here its very calm here just in the last 3045 minutes or so things have really calmed down i believe were done with the weather now just as fast as hurricane delta came in this afternoon and again the storm is is gone as far as Coastal Louisiana is concerned you are looking live right now at a very large hotel across from parking garage here that is still without power that is much of the case unfortunately i believe for a lot of the lake charles residents here who decided to stay and ride out hurricane delta of course is area impacted pretty hard just 6 weeks ago and thats probably an understatement of a pretty hard this area was devastated 6 weeks ago by hurricane laura that was a category 4 really devastating this community there are still blue roofs of blue tarps on the roofs here there are still thousands of debris piles scattered across this community so itll be very interesting to see what things look like here tomorrow at the light of day i can tell you i believe a lot of residents to get out of town for this storm after dealing with hurricane laura again just 6 weeks ago we came into town yesterday just for about 12 hours or so the entire interstate was backed up. Bumper to bumper heading west into houston again hopefully a lot of residents got out of here we will look at that damage here tomorrow and the lake charles area yet lee brown lake charles louisiana. Lets hope the folks if they didnt hightail it out of town that they have hunkered through the night for sure. Absolutely okay all right, thank you very blake brown reporting for us tonight at houston take care or rather thats lake charles louisiana. All right moving on to our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow who is also tracking wheres it headed next. Yeah, its really heading right up through louisiana, boy theyve just been a guard all season, long you can see the storm system now weakening but still heavy rain they see flooding all along this boundary as it continues to work its way up from the gulf in across louisiana and then makes his way toward the eastern seaboard but heavy rain gusty winds. You talk about the debris already on the ground floor that certainly becoming an issue with all those gusty winds developing and maybe 5 to 10 inches of rain you see these heavy bands of that tropical moisture moving on shore right now. And certainly not what they want to have this is really following the path of what laura did. When it came on shore a look coming landfall very close to that now sustained winds of 75 Miles Per Hour making it a week. Category one. But coming on shore 7 to 11 storm surge and then making its way further north by tomorrow and then it will continue on that track moving to the northeast its all finally making his way toward the eastern seaboard as we head toward the latter part of sunday, but between now and then expect flooding is moving on that path very similar to lower that ground is already saturated not going take much really to see more flooding. It has been nearly 7 months since disneyland in Southern California had to close because of the pandemic and there is still no word on when it may actually reopen yes, sad situation. Governor newsom recently said that hes not in a hurry to reopen theme parks here in the state. And as Jennifer Mcgraw reports for us tonight that could mean an Economic Disaster for the happiest place on earth. Disney in china, japan, france and florida have all open but here in california. The governor says its too soon leaving everyone who wants to go everyone who is employed in limbo. The once happiest place on earth now just a depressing sight with no signs of reopening Disneyland Resort every other theme park across the state continue to be on lockdown with the governors quote, no hurry to reopen. I understand the dialectic the friction, the frustration that many Business Leaders have that they want to move forward. Set to really to to but were were going to be led by a health first framework and were going to be stubborn about it. The governor getting blowback by the theme park here in anaheim, the chief medical officer for disney absolutely rejects the suggestion that reopening the Disneyland Resort is incompatible with the health first approach since march, the company has been working to keep patrons. I think character safe and socially distant and theyre not the only ones fighting the governor i want actually invite governor newsome to come to anaheim. See the Economic Impact himself. Is it does actually right here. The governor also noting that when the new rules are issued they wont just be limited to well known theme parks but will also include smaller amusement parks. Such as the one on santa cruz pier. California overall is looking at losses of almost 80 Million Dollars in travel related spending this year. Disneyland resort alone is facing a 100 Million Dollar budget deficit on top of 28,000 employee layoffs. Oc Public Health hope to have disneyland opened once they move up a tier but thats not happening anytime soon in anaheim Jennifer Mcgraw. Thats empty also staying at the sports fields in gyms that would normally be packed with youth sports teams. Yeah, you sports doesnt really fall in any of the tiers that counties are following to determine which activities and businesses are allowed to resume or operate during the pandemic instead the California Department of Public Health is issue general guidance prohibiting all outdoor and indoor tournaments events and competitions menlo park father of 3 boys has now started an online petition demanding the state and elected officials do more to bring back youth sports dont think the state is against us courts.
