Tonight they held a Virtual Meeting and heard from a number of teachers and parents kron fours michelle kingston has that story. Like the one thing that has been very true this year is life has been disrupted. And to me reopening schools is simply another disruption, teachers parents and mount diablo Unified School District officials discussing how when or if schools may reopen this year. As everybody has like this is hard theres no denying that the district sent surveys out to families over the weekend some say they dont feel safe returning to school while others are anxious to get back in the classroom, you know having any kind of hybrid learning would be detrimental in terms of the virus and plea because regardless. Like im seeing on my students, some parents say Virtual Learning has been tough its a tremendous families. Who cannot work in such a majority of teachers who spoke during the meeting are against opening schools right now they say teachers and students are just beginning to get settled into this new routines going to worse in my opinion that zoom because were not to be able to move around but not the name given govern him things im not going to able to see i have to stay far away from them i cant see their work right now zoom they can hold things up so. I know theres a big push know the socialization is important i know that being online is very hard for a lot of these kiddos but if we cant go back the way that were supposed to be there. How calm were you when your kids were sent home from school and you didnt know when they can go back how kind you. When your childrens couldnt see your parents because you are afraid they could kill them. Well, the American People have demonstrated over the last 8 months. They were given the facts theyre willing to put the health of their families and their neighbors and people they dont even know first. President trump and i have great confidence in the American People. Vice president mike pence defended the Trump Administrations handling of the covid pandemic that has killed more than 210,000 americans. While democratic challenger Kamala Harris condemned what she called the quote greatest failure of any president ial administration. The candidates faced off tonight during a debate dominated by the coronavirus it far more civil affair than last weeks president ial debate. Joining us now as you can see with some reaction east bay congresswoman. Barbara lee going to be with you you watched the debate, no was there. A clear winner in your view. Oh yes, the clear winner of course senator Kamala Harris first lsu demonstrated that he will bring integrity and honesty and stability to the white house Vice President his distortions in the way manipulated facts were was very larry and 211,000 people have died from covid19. He is the of the task force to address covid19. And soak senator harris really forced him answer the question and he could not dance the question because the he in many ways he and donald trump. And the lack of their leadership is responsible for 211,000 people. Parish and dying from this horrific pandemic. 30 Million People who lost their job and millions who have contracted the virus so i this was like i well the country saw who was responsible for what has taken place during this terrible terrible period. Congresswoman obviously youre a democrat on team kamala but some people call Vice President pence the trump translator. He says the same things essentially that the president says but in a calmer manner with softer tone. Do you think that the Vice President was able to change any undecided mines maybe some suburban voters who are still on the fence. No i dont when you look at the disrespect in many ways that he had for a senator theyre trying to get her to answer. Yes questions, i mean her unprofessional and how disrespectful that and so i believe those who are on the fence. Will come to say, Vice President biden and senator harris. Or the grown and well leave this country into addressing the covid pandemic in a in a methodical way who will help create good paying jobs and bring this economy back into will unify the country. Believe anyone. Could be read tonight after my is presentation that i think its important for them are and she didnt answer many of the questions and it was real and they are and i just have to say the question about the peaceful transfer of power he can answer that question you want theyre going to win, i mean any candidate in a democracy, the peaceful prayer for prout we even say he could accept that. Congressman lee obviously representing of the east bay senator harris of course from berkeley. Were well aware of her in the bay area her prosecutorial chops do you think one of the Biggest Challenges she had tonight was to convinced the rest of america she was likable that. If for any reason she were to take over as president that they would feel comfortable with her that she achieved that. She did and we know senator to aj harris to be one who is smart. She has integrity. She has the passion but she stop she broke air the route with the American People and i think tonight and we know what she has done in terms of her support for consumers taking on wall street. She was very clear that they were on the side and she is on the side Vice President biden is on the side of the American People and not wall street and shes a comet a prosecutor and i think that her skills as a prosecutor were very evident tonight, but also her compassion and her understanding what every family needs in america in terms of health care in terms of the ability to pay the rent to take care of their children and their families this you really understand the needs of the American People. Were out of time congresswoman but quickly certainly a trailblazing moment, the first woman of color on this grand stage. What do you think this means from a historic standpoint tonight. Well, you know i got involved politics through campaign of the first africanamerican woman elected to congress congresswoman Shirley Chisholm who for president and i think especially our young people. Are you girls of color. Our young africanamerican girls. Well say that its possible to be the Vice President is possible to be on the National Stage the type of of competence that she show and that she is breaking many many glass ceilings for women and for younger women to really move forward with their lives and she is force of nature to be reckoned with. And we saw that tonight and im very proud of senator harris course was born in oakland ive known her for many many years that support or to campaigns and so i think this is historic moment, and she recognizes the importance of this moment, and she challenging those who you know we have. We have of the rate to really begin to understand that those have to be dismantled in black woman, woman of indian descent. Can also be the Vice President of this country. All right representative barbara lee we appreciate your time as always thank you for joining us tonight. Thank you thank you. Now on the flip side if you ask Top Republican leaders who won this debate will their answer pence in a runaway President Trump tweeting after the debate concluded mike pence one big according to south carolina. Senator Lindsey Graham an outstanding job by Vice President mike pence showcasing the differences between trump pence and biden harris mike pence was calm informed and made a lot of sense a home run tonight for the trump pence ticket. Youre watching tonights debate of course our Catherine Heenan of inside politics. Here with more on that. Hi catherine high grand yeah, so what did they think about the one and only Vice President ial debate. Our analysts were under wound on the whole from the fact the moderator just wasnt cutting people off to the fact that a lot of questions really not clearly answered. And in some cases harris and by pants Vice President pence under a lot of pressure to have a good night did that happen. Heres part of our conversation. I think i think that this what this debate was completely about the about the pandemic and all the attempts to sort of. As a left wing socialist what have you i mean they were they were what and had to do. But it is, but its because he was playing with less than a full deck in terms of all with the kind of car she had had a the end of the day. You need to say certain number of sayings about Kamala Harris. And he has a calmer demeanor than her. Theres no one who can logically say that shes more compared to be president then hand and so what he had to do say who she is saying what her most put the spotlight on my own on how. What amounts to hiding by where you cant you dont know what he does until you elect him. And pointing out that they are policies wont help the economy. I think theres a perceptual gap thats going on there seems to be in some ways a concern amongst the politicians and those that are running that is oblivious to most people theyre trying to navigate this crisis this pandemic theyre worried about their jobs and their houses. Theyre worried about their livelihood your household you would think the president and his team would go harder about the economy all the polling has indicated previously. That was a strong suit for them, but they seem somewhat oblivious to that that this pandemic this infection. It is upsetting the whole apple cart. And we will hear more from our analysts coming up at 9. 10 oclock tonight, one of my questions do they think there will be another president ial debate. It was not unanimous grant and vicki. All right appreciate it. Catherine and thanks to all our analysts by the way kron fours of course your local election headquarters this election season. And if youre scoring at home just 27 days now until the november election. And a field flooded evacuations. Underway. Hurricane delta making a mess as it takes aim at the gulf coast plus fire crews, increasing containment on the glass fire in the north bay. But a little bit the glass fire burning in the north bay has scorched more than 67,000 acres now tonight containment is up to 62 more than 600 homes have been destroyed and more than 13,000 structures remain threatened. They hope for rain around the bay area is fading unfortunately obviously terrible news for firefighters and everybody else chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow is here lawrence there was some real hope thats maybe saturday. We would not get a fire season ending rainstorm but at least something to help yeah certainly be nice to get a couple raindrops in the bay area unfortunately right now looks at least like the first system may just entirely misses out there now weve got the fog well see a little drizzle. From the system out there right now, but that is about it the temperatures in the 50s and the 60s a nice fall feel to outside today, all right, heres the longrange model now this model yesterday was bringing rain on the coastline or the other models was keeping it off the coast now they coincided and this one looks like this was the losers it looks like the system is going to kind of cut off start to drag to the south in fact it gets pretty close and you can see it off the coastline by friday afternoon but then moves further south all the way down in southern california. We miss it we may catch just the southern edge of this next one that could bring a few scattered light showers mainly in the north bay as we head in towards saturday. But after that guess what High Pressure builds in behind it we start to talk about those offshore winds and high fire danger. I think that will play out well into next week matter of fact maybe even a stronger wind event those offshore winds and dangerous fire conditions late next week too. Coming up danger on duty when a man walks into an lapd station. And goes for the officers gun. Plus the president touting an experimental drug for his quick Covid Recovery but was he given and is it available for the average american after the break for speaking with the chairman of the department of medicine for the setting of Voter Registration record 1 million registered voters for the upcoming november, 3rd election now which is a milestone for that county that reflects 83 of total eligible voters. And thats up 16 from 2016. There are still 12 days left for residents to register there. Registration numbers have also set a record in San Francisco and turnout is expected to set a record kron fours dan kerman reports from San Franciscos outdoor Voting Center which is in front of the bill graham Civic Auditorium with city hall tearing down in the background, San Franciscos outdoor Election Center is open for business in front of the bill graham Civic Auditorium. Here people preferring to vote in person before their neighborhood polling place opens on election day can do that. Others who have already filled out their mailin ballot. Can drop it off at one of 2 drop boxes. The mail yesterday on day for and we fell out. I never missed a single shot ballots went out in the mail on friday and already 12,000 san franciscans have completed and return those ballots. Those numbers are higher than we at this point in the process. So were probably about 2 to 3 times myers party turns are concerned whether you put your completed ballot in a city designated drop us mailbox or turn it into your neighborhood polling place on election day. You can track that ballot on the San Francisco elections website. Officials say this years election will be historic for San Francisco weve increased about 20,000 registered voters in our our count since the march election. So right now in San Francisco 517,000 registered voters. Right now thats the highest number of registered voters would have 4 election. In the citys history and come election day theyre expecting a record turnout as well above the 81 that turned out in 2008. When barack obama was first elected president. What you can drop off your completed ballot here at the bill graham Civic Auditorium elections Officials Say your best bet is still a u. S. Post box the blue ones also they say if you have not received your mail in ballot by friday. Call the Elections Office in San Francisco. Dan kerman kron 4 news. Our big story tonight, President Trump is crediting an experimental drug with helping his recovery from covid19 is suggesting also his diagnosis could be a blessing in disguise for the nations battle against the pandemic but. At this point there really is no way for the president or his doctors to know whether the drug is responsible for all of we want to welcome in the chairman of the department of medicine for ucsf doctor bob wachter. Doctor watching thanks for being with us again well get to the regeneron issue momentarily but last night you made waves on national tv for suggesting to Rachel Maddow that President Trump could be mentally adversely affected because drug see is on particularly the sterile obviously youve noted that youre not sure but thats a ill ask you after seeing the president in his video message today and knowing what we know how do you think the president is doing. Well i its hard to diagnose through the video so. It would be better if i was seeing him in person, but in terms of what we saw in the video his personality seemed to be him and i certainly didnt detect any signs that he he was altered from what what is normal baseline as he also parent that look pretty good from a breathing standpoint, which is those are the 2 main worries that if the virus. Is taking off he would probably get short of breath and that would be the biggest sign that he might be you might be getting worse and that was a concern today or to go certainly after he came off the helicopter and walked up the stairs, he looked very short of breath, but today he looked better and his mental status. I think look pretty good. So lets get to that regeneron of the president touting this and i are talking about making it available to everybody. Is that realistic an end as the jury still out on an regeneron and obviously hes also the president is is experiencing a cocktail of things does appear that steroids and is is this rights. Well this is why we do Clinical Trials because you know first for one person to take one medicine and do what seems to be pretty well says virtually nothing about whether that medicine was effective. Thats why we study 10s of thousands of patients to figure this. This sort of thing most people with covid do you know the overall mortality rate is is 0. 6 for someone the president s age and risk groups is might have been closer to 5 or 10 and so he still had a 90 chance of doing well so is absolutely no the we cant look at what happened to him and not out of the woods by the way has got another week at risk and you could still do poorly but even if he does well we cant look at that and say the medicine made the difference on top of that the medicine is pretty early in its testing phase and we actually dont know for sure that its effective although its promising it it was not unreasonable to to give it a try with him is on to other medicines. Remdesivir and dexamethasone that are far better evidence behind them and if anything. Contribute to making a better. It would more likely be one of those 2, but it may very well be that the antibody help we have to see what these Clinical Trials show as far as making it available to everyone and making it free for everyone thats actually a very tricky judge direct to manufacture it could be very hard to for them to develop enough doses to get out there and the estimated cost could be in the thousands of dollars not clear to me how theyre going make that free. I know your doctor not a politician, but those 2 things are intertwined here and i want to talk big picture for a second. In an unprecedented move the highly respected new england journal of medicine today came out against the Current Administration saying quote the editors note that although we came into this crisis with enormous advantages, our current political leaders have not demonstrated that they are im sorry have demonstrated that theyre dangerously incompetent. What do you make of that. I think youre seeing that throughout the Scientific Community a Science Magazine which is also never done that has done the same thing and i think i feel much of it myself i started the pandemic trying very hard not to be but of course it turns out to be both the scientific and political process and problem and the response to the pandemic has been at a National Level has been terrible. It has cost 10s of thousands of lives. I know that in San Francisco where i think the political response has been generally quite good weve now lost a 108 people to covid which is tragic but 108 people that los angeles 6,000 new york 25,000 and if the entire country mirrored San Franciscos death rate. We would have saved about a 150,000 lives so i think if we had strong consistent National Leadership and emphasis on following the science matt king getting Testing Programs out there is no question that we would have been far better off save lots of lives and i think many scientists have found that they just cant sit on the sidelines anymore not say that. Thank doctor we always look forward to hearing your thoughts. And your thank you doctor. Bob from ucsf appreciate having us. Another warm day in tinsel town halls have been flying out of the park at a record pace during this series. 3 to 2 aides in the 5th Marcus Semien hits the as 3rd home run of the game that put oakland up 3 to 2. It was all good just a week ago, nick mullens was the talk of the town slicing and dicing the giants defense. Jimmy who. But the eagles change that narrative real quick now all the attention has shifted to jimmy g and when he can get back on the field a high ankle sprain usually keeps players showed for 4 to 6 weeks and jimmy g went down on september 13th. This sundays game would get him back in 4 weeks sharp. Jimmy was limited at practice today as you can see no land for anything and he looked good in the limited time we were able to watch him but obviously practice in full game speed are 2 very different things. His status for sunday is still very much uncertain. But Kyle Shanahan said he knows wholl start of jimmy cant go but hes keeping that decision close to the vest. But im gonna hold that just because theres a difference between them and of jimmy cant go. Id like a miami find out on sunday. But i decided well get both of them are up because got to be ready in case doesnt go. But i guess well find answer on which ones not trust.
