The glass fire burning through land that was saved from the other recent wildfires, we found out of our house. It gives you pause and it gives you a a moment to realize whats really important in life because. What we thought was important. Is now ashes. Hard work to build a home wiped away in mere seconds a sobering realization for families of last a lifetime of memories to the glass fire. We have live kron 4 Team Coverage to his own head of the cdc said if we just wore masks between now if there everybody wore a mask social distance between now and january we probably save up to a 100,000 lives. It matters and theyve all since i have to sit no serious person said the plus a night full of 5 interjections and contentious exchanges. President trump and democratic challenger, joe biden going face to face for the first time our political analysts are breaking it all down. Good evening. Thanks for joining us on kron 4 news at 8 oclock, im ken wayne and im Vicki Liviakis in for pam moore, firefighters have gotten a break today because breezes replace those powerful gust that sen. The glass fire raging the previous couple of days, but 10s of thousands of people still remain under Evacuation Orders, the glass fire burning in napa and sonoma counties has destroyed more than 46,000 acres. Fire crews reporting the first containment. But its not much to percent cal fire says 80 homes have been destroyed 28 in Sonoma County 52 in napa county. More than 22,000 structures remain threatened. Tonight about 70,000 people are still not allowed to return home, but some mandatory orders are being downgraded to warnings while others have been upgraded. Kron fours Ella Sogomonian has the latest details on this l a. Yes, so the wind tends to drive the movement of the flames so that has now shifted direction as well as Evacuation Orders and warnings tonight. Santa rosa isnt as much of a concern now its really the northeast that is in the path of the glass fire because of the direction of the wind that is flowing toward the northeast so in Sonoma County people who live in Bennett Valley to the North Eastern section of it and then oaklawn stone bridge kenwood down to the valley of the moon just above glen ellen cannot return home. So all this red is a mandatory zone and that falls between west a fire road and across to skyhawk and piped in and now to napa county where the blue is all that mandatory evacuation zone and some upgrades there tonight for state route 29 and highway one 28 at foothill boulevard to the county line between dime in mount and Petrified Forest road. And that includes angwin in and around Robert Louis Stevenson state park down to the southern tip of Lake Hennessey as well as south and west of highway one 28 and north of calistoga by the fairgrounds up to Greenwood Avenue but section there has now been downgraded. Thats a southern portion of calistoga thats now a warning the yellow that you see there. North of Petrified Forest road and that includes middle rincon spring lake and summerfield theres also warning for Chalk Mountain areas. Well thats the yellow right there. So residents of angwin in deer park are told not to drive through deer park but instead they must evacuate through pope valley live in the newsroom. Ella sogomonian kron 4 news thank you very much the glass fire tore quickly through one community in napa county consuming many homes. Also brought down an Elementary School that had been on site since 19 02. Kron fours terisa stossel is sin the deer park neighborhood today. Thats in the hills and mountains above the napa valley, she joins us now live in theresa. Tell us what you saw. Well i saw a lot of destruction can i just want to kind of set the scene for a lot of people who may not really know where deer park is im on deerpark road that silverado trail right behind me and in front of me is one 28 and then behind me is of course the silverado trail some kind of between those 2 and if you kept on going up that road youd make it to england. So its like this very Small Community behind me and as i went up there park road i stood on the street and everywhere i looked to the homes had been completely destroyed. I talked with one resident and he took some video and he said that he still kind of in a state of shock. From his home on silverado trail johnson cassette appointed his phone at the nearby hillside sunday night and captured this video of the raging fire carving away down the hill into the communities below. Youve been Walking Around what have you notice. Lot of destruction which is from what ive seen i was here on sunday. Even sunday night as the just on this next ridge and then somehow it was you know, its so hot. So windy that the hammers filed last night and i and say this home out last month burned 20 thats one sunglass mountain it took off devouring everything in its site. Homes that once hosted parties and family gatherings reduced to ashes collapsed chimneys and nearly unrecognizable vehicles. What brings you here. A friend of mine lives down that street thats pretty grand. And i wasnt just wanted to check on. It has to see if it was still there because he lives in oregon. Whats your thoughts when you look around how do how it feel. Im not going report any optimism in the Deer Park Community of about 1200 people smoke. From still burning wooden beams the sign out front proudly mention foothill adventists Elementary School had been there since 19 02. Yet the ferocious fire proved more powerful he shattered the windows and the flames destroyed the rest of the building. Behind that some classrooms remain, but the total damage very severe. The former report ella was mentioning about how dare park roads shut down and that is because it is incredibly dicey as i was driving up you have to make sure that the trees that are leaning out on the streets dont come tumbling down when i was standing and talking with jonathan a tree just came down and fortunately came down the opposite area of where were standing by. I certainly very dangerous up there and power lines are all scattered around the street, ive noticed in the past 24 hours. Ive noticed pg e crews, everybodys starting to come up here to try and take away some of the downed power lines, but its going to take quite some time before it is safe for anyone to really be going back in to look at the damage back to you guys to receive mentioned youre next to glass mountain, which is there at the intersection of the silverado trail in deer park road. Which is the the fire the origin of the fire. Because thats why its called a glass fires at correct and right now we still dont know the cause of this fire thats. Cut stretch across 2 counties. Ive reached out to some sources they still say its under investigation. They wont rule out anything right now so were not exactly sure how this started on sunday night and then just raced into these neighborhoods. So that certainly will take some time sometimes it takes over a year to find out the actual origin of the fire but. Again as youre mentioning thats glass mount just behind me right here and last mount an i did a story on that yesterday and the whole thing went up in flames so our hearts go out to this community as they are seeing and dealing with so much heartbreaking destruction. Absolutely thank you to reset. And mostly the important thing is time. You really dont want to hang out to la. A frightening scene as flames advanced on the north bay community, a homeowner. Describes the frantic night he had to just pick up and leave its not the first time that hes had to evacuate that santa rosa resident explain to our kron fours has it made you what happened when the glass fire erupted in a story youll only see on kron 4. Youre looking at 2 photos taken during evacuations from 2 different wildfires in santa rosa. One of those from the glass fire and one of them is from that house fire. Lifelong santa rosa resident myron data took both photos this picture of the glass fire was taken early monday morning as he was evacuating from his home in rincon valley. Here is video of the ominous red glow from the fire over that same ridge. A frightening you know you feel that your belly there really isnt a whole lot of thinking. You grab what is. Very important to you and and you leave. As previously noted the santa rosa resident and businessman has experienced this before this is a photo of his home before he evacuated from the tubbs fire back in 2017. This is what he found when he returned youre at roughly 10 years of someone live in everything destroyed the destruction didnt stop there. Family members lost their homes as well 7 lost their homes in the yeah. In the tough part 2017 7 family members yeah, yeah it gets old, you know get so try to like reestablish or rebuild. And then the next year having the same thing you bill in jeopardy. However if youre thinking he has had enough of evacuating year after year due to wildfires. A huge smile on his face the santa rosa resident says. And feeling like i can do it again i dont know that the years im not sure you know this is sonoma strong there is said we make it work if it means rebuilding like in 2017. We get it zeke kron 4 news. Lets go outside and take a look at the weather at sfo we can looks like theres a little bit of fog in the air and thats a positive thing for firefighters. Thats because those strong thankfully were replaced by calmer winds. Our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow is here with details lawrence want to change we saw that sea breeze kick in and boy that sure brought some big changes in the fire conditions. Not those strong 3050 mile an hour gusts. But all of a sudden we get a sea breeze and much higher humidity now the danger is that is pushing the fire back away from santa rosa right now, but you and the napa valley angwin pushing back toward that direction so thats certainly a concern for them, those winds not real strong in fact a fairly light around most of the bay area around the fires to 5 Miles Per Hour. The west in rohnert park of the southwest and santa rosa at 4 Miles Per Hour so fairly light winds tonight thats the way theyre expected to stay all night. But theyre going to change again and youll see it right here overnight tonight, the breeze is going to continue that is going bring up the humidity more moisture outside even tomorrow morning not much its calm and santa rosa early tomorrow morning, the humidity going to be way up but then as we get into Late Wednesday and thursday all of a sudden were going to see a quick hit of some offshore winds again that northerly wind so that fire. Its going to change direction again all of a sudden that is going to start to push maybe to the south maybe the south we asked as or southeast as were going to see the fire conditions change the winds wants change once again 2 guys back to i lawrence you can find more coverage of the glass fire at kron 4 dot com. We have an interactive map of burn and evacuation zones, a complete list of Evacuation Orders. And the statewide map showing all the areas impacted by californias historic wildfire season. Its available right now at kron 4 dot com coming up contentious exchange, the number of them in the first president ial debate between donald trump and joe biden. Our inside bay area politics tonight President Trump and joe biden faced off for their first president ial debate it was in cleveland 90 minutes, no breaks and would argue no control it was noisy was chaotic at one point the moderator Chris Wallace. Try to get President Trump to condemn White Supremacists heres what happened on the right what do you what do you do you sign up willing to do anything i want to see what he do it sir do its a. You want to call them. What you want to call and give me a name give me my surprise us and and i are outgrowing sun right stand back and stand by but ill tell you what ill tell you what somebodys got to do something about antifa and the left because this is not a right as is levee i direct this as a last week his own former spokesperson said. You know riots and chaos and violence help his cause. Thats what this is all who said that i do too. Kellyanne conway i dont think she said she said that at this so heres our up but heres the point. I wait is that thats what he is keep trying to rile the he doesnt want to calm things down instead of going in and talking to people and say lets get everybody together figure out how to deal with this what she do. Yeah a lot to unpack here. After the debate kron 4 had a special edition of inside bay area politics tonight, heres katherine allen. Catherine you hosted the show quite a night yeah, well, you know what we just saw that kind of crazy not quite answering the question and things getting hot who is 90 minutes, so bad really was it was very chaotic. I asked our political analyst what they thought about tonights debate and you could say they were less than impressed. This is a its that simple and so it does give i think though more weight to what happens on the Vice President ial debate, the first and only Vice President ial debate which is coming up because we want expect this type back and forth that we saw here tonight it might give us and put us back ironically in a place thats more president ial when we look at the running mates on this ticket. The fact that theres so much air time devoted to Chris Wallace trying to arm wrestle or mud wrestle. The president into complying with with be when you when youre arguing about the rules you basically lost the debate. Some of us including me speculated that he would have trouble given he is and come in to klein and you know what. He really didnt. So if you ask me on expectations about this today. Americans saw joe biden that didnt lose it. And thats an important aspect of this. The story wont be about joe biden have me saying to Million People died of covid and so in that respect i thought he did well i think the president could have done better. Yeah, tom eyes, former chair of the state Republican Party interesting he did have some reservations about the president had some fairly kind words for joe biden cannon vicki little bit of a right katherine, thank you very much kron 4 is your local election headquarters there are now 35 days until the general election. Back to our other big in the past couple of days, this glass fire just ripped through napa valley. Destroying dozens of buildings and damaging several historic wineries they include the bremmer family winery in saint helena, at least one vineyard was charred. A chateau boswell also in saint helene of the fire destroyed this boutique winery burgess sellers in deer park, it was destroyed in the fire but the full extent of losses, not quite known tonight castello di amorosa in calistoga the blaze devoured the farmhouse building and the winery 100,000 bottles of wine. The fair winds Estate Winery also in calistoga now most of the fairways winery in its tasting room have been very seriously damaged one of the wineries that we just talked about its a napa county landmark kron fours dan kerman continues our Team Coverage with a look at the damage. At castello di amorosa. What sets castello di amorosa apart from other wineries in the napa valley is that its built to resemble a 13 thcentury tuscan castle. But even these formidable watch towers could not stop the glass fire from racing across the valley monday morning and destroying the winerys farmhouse which is used as a warehouse obvious that they shun was down 70 during covid. And then with the fire in the last 4 got down and not a 15 . So we were heavily impacted had covid and then the fires that way now and then we get out and fight. Well they believe the tanks inside survived not so the line inside those tanks or the cases of line that went up in flames. I think it is around that 10,000 cases which is a 120,000 bottles if you want to put a figure that i would say its around 4 to 5 Million Dollars luckily, the winerys Main Building tasting room and outdoor terrace survived as well as its offsite warehouse, we make our living with people come to visit the castle, the castle would have been down we we would have no income for years to come. So in a way we are lucky. Tuesday was a day of cleaning up and still the winemaking process continues 4050 of all the grapes are harvested but i have to say this is probably the most challenging year for one make in the last 50 is as for when this place will be back open for tastings they say as soon as the Evacuation Order is lifted. Calistoga dan kerman kron 4 news that is remarkable so theyre going to be asking for a lot of support for people to come out there and check him out look at this live picture vicki beautiful shot of the fog hanging over San Francisco with basically just a Sales Force Tower poking through yet looks like a the bay area air Quality Management district though has extended a spare the air alert through friday. As a result of all the smoke from these wildfires. Chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow here with details lawrence yeah guys were going to see a little more that smoke on the ways one is going to shift directions again but really right now quality looking fantastic in the San Francisco youve got good air quality good all the way into san mateo london, san jose across the bay as well starting at moderate see the yellow showing up in livermore also further to concord and some of the interior valleys but even good in much of the north bay now by tomorrow that changes again the winds will start shift gears a little bit well see little more northerly component, especially late in the day so we probably start out fairly good air quality by the end of the day well see a buildup of some of that smoke so poor quality expected inside the bay by tomorrow afternoon all the way down to san jose in the east bay in the north bay as well along the coastline, you may have just enough of a sea breeze right at the waters edge to keep your quality looking good but were going to see more of that smoke on the way probably Late Wednesday. And again on thursday which will be another hot day. They are still to bay area counties getting the green light to further re open great day on the lake it is. Lunch is cookin and i saved a bunch of money on my boat insurance with geico. Fellas, can it get any better than this . Whoa my old hairstyle grew back. So did mine. [80s music] what . I was an 80s kid. It only gets better when you switch and save with geico. The good news tonight on the covid front 2 bay area counties have moved up tears in the states colorcoded system, San Francisco has moved to the orange or moderate here and contra costa counties move to the red or substantial tier that means Sonoma County is the only one in the bay area still in the purple or widespread tier. So starting tomorrow in San Francisco, restaurants and bars serving meals can reopen for Indoor Dining at 25 capacity up to a 100 people, the same restrictions or shoe for places of worship outdoor worship can expand to 200 people as long as theres enough space for social distancing. Other activities expanding include outdoor political demonstrations up to 200 people, certain Family Entertainment including outdoor childrens carousels miniature trains and ferris wheels. Fitness centers inside hotels and lodging establishments up to 10 capacity and indoor Shopping Centers and malls up to 50 capacity. The city has a goal of allowing indoor movie theaters to open at limited capacity on october 7th and outdoor playgrounds on october 14th. Those timelines are contingent on the city remaining in that orange here now in Contra Costa County the following businesses can reopen with some restrictions. Indoor restaurants movie theaters museums and places of worship can operate at 25 capacity or 100 people whichever is fewer gyms can reopen indoors at 10 capacity all personal care services, including massage parlors can move indoors now indoor shopping malls can operate at 50 occupancy indoor Retail Stores also at 50 capacity and outdoor playgrounds. You theres a lot more and if you need details on these reopenings just head to our website kron 4 dot com coming up signs of support for First Responders battling in days roweat organic. Great taste thats sustainably baked. And now, introducing our super delicious and nutritious organic kids bread featuring disneys mickey mouse and minnie mouse and our top story tonight, the glass fire burning in napa and sonoma counties, easing winds are giving firefighters a bit of a break in wine country. But the wildfire has already burned more than 46,000 acres containment just at 2 . Now this is the 4th major fire in 3 years in the napa and sonoma areas kron fours head of the sec. He continues our Team Coverage from santa rosa where taylor these residents are. Way too used to these tragic events. Absolutely can and this is actually where the Saint Germain family used to live in unfortunately now theyre going to return home to this all of this rubble and you can see over here some of it still smoking right now im standing in the garage and used to also have a weightlifting room you can see some of the weirdest oddest things make it through these fires, this bar bill in weightlifting wreck somewhat still in takin over here that was a martial arts cage. About halfway through its run what we could and the my husband and i dot really expect the snow started getting bigger and i just knew intuitively is like time to get out tristin Saint Germain and her family sprung into action early monday morning when flames from the glass fire started to approach their santa rosa home tristen her husband and 2 kids grab whatever they could within the moments notice i actually sleep with my documents in an envelope next to my bed. Could become a thing reading through an occupation xover no burning like most of the fires. I like to grab having lived in the north bay for many years they were all too familiar with the evacuations, whoever they only lived in this oakmont neighborhood near sonoma highway for a little over a year, but now theyll have to find a new place to call home. I mean shocking haha. An overwhelming there was part of my intuition that i knew when i was walking out of the night comes about age thing so many times. I that some sort of scent like maybe this is it this time unfortunately tristans intuition was right this time the family lost their chickens in addition to other priceless items, christians, an artist and despite losing most of her life squared shes thankful to make it out safely with her family it stocks but at the end of the day like were all alive. We all made it out or dog made it out you know like. Yeah, we lost treasures that you know that cannot be replaced by an entire art studio everything ive ever made 40 years of costumes and addressed the. You know all my patients, but you know, im creative and i can create together. Right now the family staying with friends and will stay there until they find a new place to call home. Live in Santa Rosa Taylor kron 4 news. Thank you taylor and our Team Coverage continues in napa county which is where fire crews fear that one i was the biggest challenge tonight. Thats where we find our kron fours a long shes actually live in saint gayle you he spent the day in england. Whats it like up there. The key it is a ghost town the community is under mandatory evacuation because a lot of the fire activity was in that area. Firefighters are concerned about the fire moving towards a win and hope bally so that is why people cannot go home just if you drive along my show you video actually it is a ghost town where residents have actually left some evacuated tags for napa county sheriffs deputies to see that is a much appreciated thats we see many of those tagged as you drive around the neighborhood that was over. Just throughout the town and you can see devastation and charred. As you drive up and down that road that is so close to that at that area angwin so that is why they want to make sure people are out of that area and it looks like people are heeding those warnings which is a good sign. I did speak cal fire today. The goal is on day 3 today they were able to send Damage Assessment teams to the area where the fire has swept through. But that number we heard at least 50 homes in napa county have been destroyed that number is expected to rise at the teen make their way to the area. Erratic lead just because those numbers will increase doesnt mean that theres an active damage going on this damage inspection will go on for multiple days because theres a large fire perimeter. Now back here live and actually hear that youre alive and actually here on trail and deer park road i was actually here sunday on the first night of the fire where just surrounding on both sides of this road it was just an orange though were not seeing a lot of that tonight. Firefighters did get the upper hand with this fire. And there is a lull in the winds which is a good sign at one point during the day they did see some wind activity expanded the fire but at this point you know the focus is just taking advantage of the. Loan to win so they and contain this fire as much as possible. But at this point in time. There is no end in sight because theres going to be hot. Right temperatures in the coming days and this area has been spared by past fires like the lnu complex fires, the tubbs fire in 2017 making this dry vegetation around the extremely flammable live in saint helene a all right gail and taking a look at winds on a map around the bay area 10 Miles Per Hour winds are the highest that were actually seeing near those fires. Our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow has more details on is important weather for firefighters and residents once these fires get started they continue to move really. Whatever would ever direction. Wind is blowing and so weve seen that switch direction, so first it was blowing towards santa rose with those strong offshore winds now it is blowing back a bit toward the east were getting a little more westerly component of the wind more moist when but youre getting that wind switch directions and thats the issue right now you can see the 8 Miles Per Hour and same lena pope valley there to 10 so these winds really coming out of the west and pushing the fire back in the mountainous regions here near angwin certainly a concern. And of course is moving away from santa rosa now the winds were going to switch directions again and that will be the case to watch overnight tonight as those winds more of a westerly component the fog moves on shore actually pretty good night as far as the firefighters are concerned the humidity will be way up that will slow the progress of the fire now by tomorrow afternoon we start to see more of a northerly component begin to kick in you can start to see it and snow me see the petaluma here cal, so theres still a westerly component but then that will start to strengthen a little bit more on all of a sudden you start to mix in maybe some 10 maybe some 20 mile an hour winds that can blow mainly out of the north and push that in a different direction so the fire is going to follow those winds going to follow that wind direction and certainly when you get more of a northerly wind that is a much drier more dangerous when allowing that fire spread more rapidly guys. They are still ahead. A war of words and name calling for the whole country have the highlights or lowlights the first president ial debates plus shrubs are charred grass and trees black and were taking a look at the damage left behind now more than ever, its important californians have health coverage. If youve lost health insurance, covered california can help. You may even get financial help to pay for your health insurance. Just visit coveredca. Com today. And back to our breaking news of the wine country wildfires in Sonoma County the city of santa rosa has also suffered immense fire damage. Many homes have been damaged or even completely burned to the ground kron fours Maureen Kelly continues our Team Coverage with a look at the destruction there. Parts of this landscape is still smoking in evidence with the fire burned through is everywhere from the charge shrubs of this median along highway 12 to the black and the grasses and trees in this orchard and on a small cul de sac that backs up to the orchard you can see where the fire demolished one home fire retardant lane like fresh snow on the driveway. Very little is left of 6029 molina glenn place inside the guts of the house are basically charcol and still smoking but every other home on the small street still stance further out along highway 12 Sonoma Valley is hazy with smoke. Trees on the hillside now skeletons their foliage burned away. Some homes were spared here but a few like this one not far from richards road is barely recognizable all thats left is a pit of ash and mangled metal a few sheep left behind stand watching the smoke in the community i found santa rosa firefighters just as they wrapped up tao seen whats left of 5964 stone bridge road again its what assistant fire Marshal Paul Lowenthal says is part of their Tactical Patrol to tamp down hot spots. He says this fire is much different than the 2017 tubbs fire that laid waste to entire neighborhoods. But Lessons Learned during that inferno help them in this most recent fight theyre able to evacuate this area a much earlier than we did during 2017 and that really did enable that bowling the resources to get into these neighborhoods freely. With the Evacuation Orders in place and people he knew them and leaving the area well in advance of the fire. Allowing our firefighters to get in their pickup, the numerous hot spots and save an unmet an incredible number of structures another structure damage in this fire. Maria creel high school. Fire Officials Say 2 classrooms there were burned. Maureen kelly kron 4 news. Next today from historically bad to even worse how this years wildfire season compares to the recent past and taking a break from the news in sports. The as run into a buzz saw on the mound for the Chicago White sox in game and back our breaking news of the wine country wildfire the glass fire burning in napa and sonoma counties has charred more than 46,000 acres with only 2 containment tonight. Cal fire says 80 homes have been destroyed so far 28 in Sonoma County 52 in napa county more than 22,000 structures remain threatened cal fire posted a graphic on his twitter account today, wildfire statistics from this year compared to the past. Cal fire has seen significantly more fires and acres burned in 2020 than last year and over the previous 5 year average. Were now closing in on 4 million acres burned when the past 5 years average less than 3 quarters of a million acres so with so many firefighters dispatched from across the state to the glass fire or any of the recent wildfires, you wonder whos left at the station back home should a fire start there. There is a method to this wildfire madness managing the resources as Something Like a game of chess when crews are called in to help in areas, theyre not normally assigned. Local resources are called upon to help so there are no gaps and Fire Protection back home. Managing resources means replacing the 8 pallets of water and 30,000 feet of hose used during the recent scu complex fire cal fires Morgan Hill Service center is continuously being restocked with rations face masks helmets and other tactical gear, protection and other tools of the trade and was so much of fire season still remaining. And as you resources means trying to keep crews, fresh. You can find more coverage of the glass fire at kron 4 dot com.
