This wednesday and we will begin in kentucky were grand jury has chosen not to charge the 3 Louisville Police officers for their role in the death of brianna taylor. Taylor was shot multiple times by officers who burst into her home on march 13th while conducting a no knock warrant in a narcotics investigation. Prosecutors say 2 of the officers who fired their weapons were justified in using force because they were protecting themselves. However, former officer seen here Brett Hankinson who was fired earlier this year for his role in the shooting was charged with 3 counts of wanton endangerment which means extreme indifference to the value of human life. But this was for firing into the apartments of taylors neighbors. These long awaited charges were immediately met with frustration and disappointment. As for months protesters have pressured kentuckys attorney general Daniel Cameron to arrest the 3 officers and now none of them are facing criminal charges in taylors death. And this team, members of the representatives, the attorney generals taken a lot of criticism and scrutiny. But that screen in many ways was misplaced because there was not a day. The people in this office didnt go to sleep thinking about this case and it wasnt a day with the first thing on our minds. It is getting to the truth in this case. Obviously again the criminal law is not meant to respond to every sorrow and grief and that is that is true here. After the charges were announced demonstrators took to the streets of louisville. The czu lightning complex fires are now fully contained this complex fire started back on august 16th and scorched nearly 87,000 acres in san mateo and santa cruz counties. One person died and another was injured in these places and 925 homes were destroyed. Lower temperatures higher humidity and less when the past 2 weeks has led to a break in the fire season in Contra Costa County. But kron 4 sleep to go reports the Fire Protection district says that its about to change. The Contra Costa County Fire Protection district says the fire season started in early may and that the first 2 months were historically busy the Fire Protection district saw a 400 increase in grass and vegetation fires during that time period. A sign of things to come so far this year the Fire Protection district has responded to 1131 grass and vegetation fires compared to 756 fires during the same period last year, a 50 jump. Fire district spokesperson, steve hill says we have not even reached the height of the fire season which is expected next month and this year he says the season. Will likely not end until december when the rains arrive at the moment, the Fire Protection district has 4 crews which amounts to 16 firefighters providing mutual aid to other departments outside of the county. Good afternoon just seeing good afternoon. Everyone governor newsome is taking a major step towards cutting Greenhouse Gas emissions. He announced today that hell stop the sales of new gasoline powered passenger cars and trucks by the year 2035. And he says the move will cut Greenhouse Gas emissions by 35 order directs the California Air resources to develop and approve regulations to meet the 2035 deadline. The agency will also have to make a rule requiring all medium and heavy duty trucks be 100 0 emission cars by the year 2045 where feasible. The governor also directed state agencies to speed up development of charging stations across the state and calls on the legislature to eliminate new fracking licenses by the year 2024. Now as the countrys most populous state california along with roughly a dozen other states make up a significant part of the u. S. Auto market so moves like this has a huge potential impact not only on pollution and Climate Change but also on the automobile industry. The trends are in the direction of 0 emission vehicles, the trends are in the direction globally and 0 emission vehicles. If you are an american manufacturer how can you compete globally unless youre in that business unless youre pushing the boundaries of innovation unless youre encouraging that same mindset that we are trying to advance here in the state of california. A california already has rules mandating a certain percent of new car sales be electric or 0 emission cars but if this new rule the governor newsome has tried to implement goes into effect it would make california the first state in the country to sas gas powered cars out completely now the order is a ban on sales of brand new gas powered cars, its not a ban on owning gaspowered cars or selling them on the used car market. Even with the ongoing nightmare of California Wildfires a lot of people in the state are still unprepared for the risk. Catherine heenan of inside bay area politics talk to a state senator who is doing everything that he can to change that good afternoon Catherine Tai justin yeah were talking state senator bill dodd. Hes had more than his share of constituents who have. Really suffered terribly in the recent wildfires his district includes much of wine country and beyond he held a virtual town hall this week he is trying to make sure the people are ready for the likelihood of more fires as for some of the steps people would have to take to make really big changes. He agrees that can be a hard sell. Well it could be very much so you know a lot of these areas i dont think that we should be building you know any longer in the the wild land urban interface thats the interface between their urban areas in the wild land areas. But nevertheless its pretty hard to tell somebody thats home has been burned to the ground and theyve lost everything. Im sorry you cant rebuild your home there. I think really what we have to focus on now is more more prevention its home hardening we have to get grants people that can afford should do it do it right now people cant afford the state some grants for them to be able to help them make sure their homes are hard so that would be make sure we dont have wood shingle roofs anymore for example, that means those vents that are in the attic. That you can see its actually wind fires com. What happens is that sucks in air that law also suck in ash and maybe even hot ash is blowing in the event of a fire. The congressman he knows people get a little tired of being constantly reminded to clear brush and trees away from their homes within 100 feet will probably hear that again from cal fire tonight. But he says that your home is actually 8 times more likely to still be standing if you do that after a wildfire just thank you so much and coming up we were bay area counties move forward with reopening us. How this lifts a huge weight off of gym owner shoulders. Plus a father and son find themselves in a staring contest with more than a dozen raccoons where it happened and youre going to want to hear what happened next. And you might be able to include going to the movie sin your weekend plans again well have the latest round of cinema to reop though not a few more movie theaters to choose from san marcus reopening 7 of its theaters this weekend this is happening both on the peninsula and and the north bay you can see the list of locations on your screen right now. Those theaters have several new safety protocols in place so masks are going to be required at all times. Auditoriums we sanitize between showings there will be staggered show times and limited capacity in order to maximize physical distancing. Still ahead after a slowdown in the firefight across the bay area we will get a live update from calfire on what the upcoming heat wave the wildfire smoke has cleared out of the bay area and the czu complex fires in san mateo and santa cruz counties have now reached 100 containment. So weve made some progress but right now triple digit heat a strong offshore wind is now forecasted for this weekend thats putting firefighters on edge, so for the very latest were going to bring in now cal fires Daniel Berlanti for an update on the firefight hi doing this afternoon daniel. I am good you know some good news with cz lightning complex fire now being contained a sign of a Good Progress thats being made. So aircraft there behind you is that going to. New tool you guys have been using. Behind me you can see there are actually several of our very large air tankers in fact just off to my left here is the Global Supertanker this is a converted 7. 47 this is the largest air tanker in the world and we have a contract here in california these right now are sitting here at our air base in sacramento, they have been busy nonstop for the last a month and a helping to drop retardant on a number of the fires right conditions are a little more favorable. But as you mentioned. The next couple these aircraft are on this is going to be very busy with the heightened fire risk that were going into this weekend. Yeah were under a fire weather watch for the few days in through the weekend. Its going to be hot dry windy but firefighters getting a break now is can actually nice to see the planes parked there at your air base. But whats the plan how are you preparing for this danger thats coming up this weekend. The last couple of weeks weve had a more favorable conditions temperatures have been more more weve had not as significant but that is likely to change and so we are bracing for what could be an wind saturday and throughout much of northern california, including a the north bay portions of the east bay hills all of those will be an elevated fire risk due to the critical fire weather that gusty winds low humidity and were propping not you know the potential for some of the active fires, we still have 26 major wildfires burning right now there could be an increase in activity on those fires but if a fire does spark a during the over this weekend with these weather conditions. You will likely burned a very rapidly and so were trying to the residents to make sure that they do their part to help us prevent sparking these but also be ready is a fire breaks out were going to need your help to evacuate early. So what can i do to help you how can i prepare. Well it is so important right now that people are going in families, including my own go making sure you have an evacuation kit set Important Documents so that if an evacuated fire breaks out in your area and youre asked to leave you may only have moments notice so you want to have all that items that youll need to evacuate that could be important paperwork that could be birth certificate credit cards memorabilia like for a family photographs make sure youre kind of identifying where the house are keeping those which boxes you want to take a gun so you can quickly load them up in your car be prepared now, but we also need people to do their part to prevent sparking fires some 95 of all the wildfires. We respond to our caused by the activity of people which means that we really need everybody to be extra cautious outdoors to prevent sparking a wildfire is under these conditions that simple spark well quickly ignited to a major wildfire. Cal fires Daniel Berlant joining us here live on kron 4 news at 3. Thank you so much and hope the firefighters are getting a nice little rest before we head into what should be our peak fire season. All right so lets talk now about our 4 zone forecast as we take a live look outside of her camera long 24 highway 24 in walnut creek. A nice wednesday afternoon there and here is kron fours meteorologist Mabrisa Rodriguez with more now on this fire weather watch and we can see there. The north bay hills east bay hills thats where people need to be on alert this weekend. Yeah because thats going to be where the gusty winds will take place were going to see winds out of the northnortheast. Coming down from the mountain so it is going to be a very warm and dry wind and we are going to notice gusts upwards of 50 Miles Per Hour less starting saturday morning through monday morning in addition to that very hot and dry conditions this weekend. I know that its technically fall but summer like temperatures returning to the bay area or we could see widespread 90s to triple digit heat for most of our inland valleys along the bay 80s 90s and along the coast mid 70s to mid 80s. So it is going to be a very hot weekend on tap and from now until then we did notice a little bit of warming today but overall very pleasant temperatures in fact temperatures along the coast of the San Francisco peninsula, 60 degrees for Half Moon Bay low 70s for downtown San Francisco starting to get that cool sea breeze so mother natures ac kicking into high gear right now with 78 degrees throughout the east bay shoreline and widespread low to mid and upper 80s as you make your way inland but tomorrows daytime highs going to cool down a few degrees. We are going to notice a lot more clouds and sun, especially along the coast and the return of that stronger seabreeze also pushing in that low and high cloud cover so we are going to cool down to downtown San Francisco, 69 degrees mid 60s for those of you at Half Moon Bay mid 70s throughout the east bay shoreline and widespread low to mid 80s as you make your way inland but then the heat is on this weekend just seen high fire danger concerns thats why we do have that fire weather watch going into effect all weekend long and you can see triple digit heat even extending through next tuesday starting on monday of next week so we are in for the long haul with this high fire danger concern has remember this is actually typically a peak of our high fire season the months of september and october so we saw another month to go back to you. Thank of reason up next caught on camera father and a son and a hike in Golden Gate Park when all right, heres what you have to see right now its not every day the. You might run into a pod of more than a dozen raccoons buyer out on a walk but thats what happened to kron 4 viewer stoke and his son and their dog as well.
