Temperatures are a little cooler this morning for many of us oakland dublin, livermore up into the north bay all down into the 50s specially know where the the north bay. I am talking what to expect later today and a much hotter and drier weekend just around the corner and the rest of your forecast. Robin all right. Thank you john for checking in on the bridges because they are quite busy. We have lots of crowding on the san mateo bridge. Westbound 92 is packed right now rolling out a hayward you see all the taillights going west here are urging about 13 minutes so just a small stretch of slow traffic on the flat section. We also have a long line at the bay bridge toll plaza its packed in cash lanes of fast track lanes spilling all the way back to west grand so 11 minutes and growing. Weve got several minor problems on the nimitz freeway theres a crash wrapping up northbound up to that was earlier hotspot theres a new one a to the north of alvarado boulevard on the shoulder and then we have some construction 80 north at industrial in hayward still pockets of crowding their youre averaging 22 minutes from to 37 to 2. 38 daria. Thanks a lot rob and 61 right now lets get back to the top story which is the Memorial Service for the late Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg. She will be remembered in our Nations Capital this is a live look at the Supreme Court where was appointed in 1993 served for 27 years until her death on friday in fact just weeks before she died. She was not only injustice but still working on a book within the half hour were going to see her casket arrived as you can see many many people have already gone to the Supreme Court to pay their respects 50 all of their cards and notes and flowers outside on the steps she is going to lie in repose in that casket today and tomorrow and theres going to be a private Memorial Service inside that we should have a camera in some lean should be able to take the services and you can hear what her friends and family have to say about her and again after that private ceremony the casket will be brought out to the steps where it will lie lay there in public. So the public can pay their respects as well and then we know that President Trump is also expected to announce his nomination to fill the vacancy on saturday after the justice lies in state. Inside the u. S. Capitol could be with another woman, but a woman far different ideologically then Ruth Bader Ginsburg. On capitol hill. Theyre tallying the votes to get that done as soon as possible Jennifer Mcgraw has reaction from both sides of the aisle. Republican leaders now falling in line with the president to appoint a Supreme Court nominee before the election. The last undecided vote mitt romney of utah my liberal friends have over many decades gotten very used to the idea of having a liberal court and thats not written in the stars. President trump set to name the replacement for the late judge ginsburg saturday despite objections from democrats the american people. Should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court justice therefore this vacancy should not be 5 field. But President Trump argues he was in fact elected by the people and has an obligation to fill the seat in his presidency supported by republicans including Senate Majority mitch mcconnell, even though in 2016. He voted to block then president obama is pick for the court saying it was too close to the election. But mcconnell now says thats just politics and president obama would have had his pick if he had had the senate vote any time the president white house and the senate have been in. General political agreement i think there have been 29 of those times in an election year. Judges have been confirmed. Putting politics aside outside the Supreme Court building theres a mountain of flowers condolence notes and candles. Admirers of Justice Ginsburg have been flowing in to pay their respects. She died friday at the age of 87 a pancreatic cancer her casket will be brought to the Court Building where there will be a public viewing which will also be held on thursday where theyre expecting thousands to attend. Well as Jennifer Mcgraw reporting in as we reported yesterday, there is speculation that judge Amy Coney Barrett is the front runner to be the president s nominee, but again well wait for saturday for the official announcement. 6 05 right now and in bay area news 3 more bay area counties get the green light to move forward with reopening alameda, sam, a tail and solano counties. Move into the red or second tier of the colorcoded state system and that means that there is a 5 to 8 Positivity Rate in those counties. So they think its low enough that restaurants can resume Indoor Dining at 25 capacity. Indoor malls can open their doors for 50 of capacity hair and nail salons can serve clients. Indoors. Museums places of worship and movie theaters get open as well also with a 25 cap and then Gyms Fitness Centers they get to reopen with just 10 . Capacity and that includes members working out and staff so lets go to one of those gyms a big one 24 hour fitness covers reyna harvey is there in San Mateo County, in the morning. Let me tell you i have so much energy super excited because the people that are out here working out today. Were so excited and the staff actually in this 24 hour fitness just found out yesterday. They were able to open and so they had to get everything together just in time to be able to open their doors so they open at 05 00am today and theyre going to be open until about 9 while the gym is kept about 10 capacity, so usually this 24 hour fitness told about 840 people but now about 84 people can be in the gym at one time this club is on 93 bombing road. About 5 out of the 7 clubs. Throughout San Mateo County are open theyre going to be opening those other 2. 24 hour fitness is in the coming days because they had such a quick turnaround is theyve got to get back up and running. Now what theyve done is theyve implemented a few things 14 members here they ha e a pre check in you can download an app called 24 go its touchless thats helped to get checked in without having to touch anything and well do the screening questions also they are cleaning material all literally theyve been cleaning it all morning here so chance to talk to some of the excited gymgoers this morning, heres what they had to say about being back working out. So excited, sorry, i got up at 3. 30 this morning. I couldnt sleep. I was that excited and im in the gym to me is everything for southside states is me socialization Health Everything its my life i love it all right lot of people are excited. I right now with daniel hes one of the excited members. Well actually came a long way to get to the gym. This morning, daniel. Are you feeling to be back. I feel great its its a pleasant surprise that the gyms open this morning as a planning actually going to Mountain View and when i checked the 24 hour. Go out as presently again surprised that it opened this morning so sabian shipped to Mountain View from foster you said something to me you know a very powerful earlier when you and i spoke. About you know some things being you know not taking things for granted now for the people watching this morning. What does it mean for you to be able to be back and enjoying some fitness like this safely im very grateful. Is times when. Places are closed as times when. We no longer have things that we have a greater appreciation so the deeper appreciation for everything in life not to take these are granted to always be thankful. I thank you so much daniel. So again the gym if youre thinking about coming back today closes at 5 oclock and again as you can see you have to wear a mask if you are coming down here today but for now reporting here in San Mateo County right on harvey kron 4 news all right, thanks a lot. Lorraine a. So lets continue our Team Coverage now by heading up to the north bay for malls in Solano County have been given the green light to reopen their doors and allow people inside kron fours will tran live with what you need to know if you are planning on heading out there today, good morning well. What you need to know is that still need to bring your mask you still have to social distance but the malls in solano in fairfield they are open in a few hours from now so theres something inside that you need you can go inside its at 50 capacity because the governor of the state they decided to move Solano County from that purple tier to the red tier which means that now is starting to loosen up a little bit of the covid19 restrictions purple being among the worst colors that you can get red means that slowly but surely you can go in obviously there are plenty of individual stores inside the malls if its too packed, you will have to wait outside and then you can go inside a couple of customers walk out. But the bottom line is its Getting Better because the cases in sullivan county. They have dropped as far as the Positivity Rate is below 8 at this time for every 100,000 people and that is acceptable to governor gavin newsom who has said all along he will not be driven by emotion. But by science back to you. All right, thank you very much, well an exciting day for a lot of folks up there. And new this morning by the way there is new big news in the race to find a vaccine for coronavirus with johnson and johnson now beginning, what theyre calling a huge final study on a single dose covid19 vaccine is only one shot would be needed. The study started this morning and it will be one of the Worlds Largest actually with the coronavirus vaccines that are already under study right now the company is testing the shot on 60,000 volunteers here in the u. S. And across the world, a handful of other vaccines here in the u. S. Including shots made by moderna and pfizer already in their final stages of testing and the hope is that maybe well have a vaccine announced by the end of the year. 6. 11 is time right now and were just about 15 minutes away from the casket, arriving at the Supreme Court for Ruth Bader Ginsburg who died on friday. At the age of 87, she served here at the Supreme Court for 27 years and until 2018 shed never missed a day on the job and with it a whirl argument and the chief justice of the Supreme Court as well as a rabbi or the only speakers who are going to be at her Memorial ServiceRuth Bader Ginsburg is to say she has 3 strikes against her. She would say im a mom, im a woman and im a ju so my roof and were all paying tribute to you this morning were going to talk about how she changed the lives of so many women in this with school back in session, xfinity is committed to helping kids continue to learnno matter where they are. One gets have a job job wants its not a token equal hiring and abbott another one n then if you get the same care giving rights to so security or if you need leave. To care for somebody or youre a man not a woman caring for the family that same thing you get that because you could think ruth thats right and all of the other big thing that she championed across the board in many of her 4 dissents as well. And also want to someone at road govan plaza for my roof socks. We marshawn rbg that i bring so that think she was famous for i know that you love is james working out he exercise exercise right up until the end more than i ever did absolutely she was she was a tough lady on memories of her as we go throughout the morning we want to take a look. At the weather and this morning as well john you want to thank ruth for anything absolutely yes you made an impact for all of us and i know dari been expressing. That especially with the sox morning. Whats up there as well have to talk about that after this weather looking outside at the Golden Gate Bridge there is of clear skies all across the board i mean no fog at the golden gate thats a sure sign that were going to be pretty clear elsewhere too. As for our visibility is good air quality is good to can we get any better to start the morning. Well its going to get better this afternoon after a daytime highs rise into the 70s 80s just setting us up for nice one ahead of us High Pressure is about to Start Building back in and this is going to switch things up into the weekend actually quite the weather whiplash ahead of us and a lot of it has to do with wind direction weve enjoyed a steady onshore breeze during the course of this week that is push ocean cool there right in across the bay kept things pretty mild were trading this out with an offshore wind this is going to drag hot dry air from our inland valleys, our direction and in the process is going to heat things up and result in height heightened fire danger. Inland areas of the east bay well see winds gusting as high as 30 to 40 Miles Per Hour come saturday through monday and thats when these fire weather watch is likely to become red flag warnings will take effect due to this a strong wind hot weather and also low humidity all of Solano County to be affected and then upper are in sonoma and napa counties too so keep that in mind as you step outside this weekend. We have to practice practice, extreme caution as fire danger increases as rapidly as well, 60s and 70s for your highs and San Francisco as well as right along the coastline today, more sunshine at the coast means a warmer day for the coastline to 70s for most of our bayside areas but a touch warmer along the bay to as we trade in the gray morning yesterday with what will be nice bright skies, not too long from now after the sun comes up 70s and 80s, not just for the south bay either but out into the bay even our hottest of spots dodging the 90s 88 unconquered as well as up in vacaville napa 83 benicia right there with santa rosa through mill valley in the upper 70s to low 80s to and friday will keep the nice stuff around 70s and 80s will remain the standard as we round out the week. Then come saturday and what weve been talking about just how hot it is going to be getting upper 90s to triple digits for land areas come sunday and monday with the low 90s right along the bay with offshore winds kicking up we will see increased fire danger on the same days. Robin all right, thank you john over to the beirut itself where the line is long it is officially packed up the pay gates heading into San Francisco. The line continues to stretch beyond west grand. Its going to go right through the toll plaza up the incline so 150 minutes right now into San Francisco, heres 92 and its busy as well it started off a little crowded in the 4 oclock hour. Its getting heavier by the minute so 14 minutes and growing to the peninsula with no trouble spots. But we do have a new problem on the nimitz the same spot as our old crash northbound 8. 80 at the thats where we had a hot spot this morning as still wrapping up. Another crash happened in the same area right and thats a total exit. So now we have several lanes blocked again and thats why its crawling from thorton the overall drive time not too bad want to get through that crashed there 24 minutes from to 37 off to to 38 james back to you i would use. Well in San Francisco, at least 2 schools are now allowing in person classes and these are schools that were inspected and approved to reopen. The schools are redbridge eduoation thats in the dogpatch neighborhood and the San Francisco school in the portola neighborhood. Temperatures go county launched a new online tool for parents to check out it shows how many schools have applied for waivers how many have been inspected and then of course how many have been given the green light to reopen. If youd like to take a look we posted a link to that tool on our website kron 4 dot com. In the east bay schools in Alamance County will be allowed to reopen if the county remains in the red tier for 2 weeks, but the Teachers Union for oakland Public Schools are warning against resuming in person classes too soon. We have safety criteria that still needs to be negotiated. Agreed upon before return to he doing any in Person Learning we have to make sure that were Holding Community safety student safety. In the highest regard because as weve seen across the country and even internationally. Casey of children contracting and spreading covid have been on the rise. Alameda countys most recent health order clarified that schools must continue Distance Learning until local conditions support in Person Learning. In the south bay Santa Clara County is in the red tier been there for 2 weeks now that means schools can start in person classes. But the San Jose Unified School district is going to continue with Distance Learning at least through the end of the year, a spokesperson says the district doesnt feel safe and comfortable yet enough to welcome students back to class. Because there are other things that are in the county guidelines that are still prohibited right indoor gatherings for example and from our perspective if people cant gather indoors than it doesnt make a lot of sense to put 30 kids in a classroom together which seems similar to an indoor gathering. 28,000 students go to the schools in san jose and the district says theyre not ready to regularly test all of the students for covid juneteenth is now paid holiday in the south bay Santa Clara County became the first county in california. To approve this designation and that means that every june 19th most county offices will be closed and most county employees, well get a paid day off. Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation emancipation of black slaves in the u. S. , the emancipation proclamation was passed by president lincoln in january of 1865, but it took union soldiers, 5 months to get to Galveston Texas to let everybody know that they were free. Now is 6. 22 well take a quick break and as we go well bring you live pictures once again from the steps outside of the Supreme Court where you can see a number of people beginning to assemble now as they await the arrival of the casket carrying. They started august 16th and burned nearly 87,000 acres in san mateo and Santa Cruz County killed one Person Injured another. And bird down 925 homes. In the north bay people who live in the Russian River area are thanking a group of heroes known as the bulldozer crew members of the community who brought there own heavy equipment out during the lnu lightning complex fires to help keep the flames at bay and protect their neighbors properties, they work for more than a week straight, cutting fire lines saving untold homes and sometimes right up against the flames themselves. One man says hes operated his dozer for cal fire for more than well for many years, but he said this year was obviously very different for him personally. And theres kids you close all you work hard to have a lot of things. And to just give up. You know you can you got it. They have all this. You got to fight. For Supreme CourtJustice Ruth Bader ginsburg you can see everyone gathered here these are her law clerks theyre going to stand guard. As the casket arrives, and they will stay there throughout the entire ceremony as well, second woman ever appointed to americas highest court and perhaps the best known of all the justices. The only one with the nickname, the notorious well be back with more coverage in a few minute 6. 29 right now and the cursed just pulled up with a casket. The late Supreme CourtJustice Ruth Bader ginsburgs body inside you can see. A huge gathering of people that had come to the edge of the fencing there which is as far as theyre allowed. Just witness the casket being brought to the front of the Supreme Court. But they will get to pay their respects later james after the private ceremony inside the Supreme Court building. The casket of Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg will be. Presented at the top of the steps there underneath portico at that point you can imagine theyll bring out the velvet ropes and the start allowing people then to form a line and to pass by the casket to pay their final respects that will be the public for that and then of course as we know tomorrow. On friday the casket will be taken then to the u. S. Capitol where it will lie in state and thats also a historic thing as well. Yes, theres never been a woman line and state. In this country in our history and that will be a first on friday been brought out right now yet the age of 87 after 23 years. On the high court. Sorry 27 years almost 3027 years on the high court you see her her casket is being carried right now of Supreme CourtPolice Officers serving as the pall bearers theyre physically carrying the casket. Into the Supreme Court building but youll notice as the shot begins to move that theyll be passing in between a number of people lined on the steps of the Supreme Court themselves they are all former law clerks Justice GinsburgJustice Ginsburg and theyre all serving as honorary pall bearers theyre going to be lining those steps and youll see them as the shot begins to move now. Thats a bring the casket into the building, you know there are its its like a chess for the way theyre standing at attention all of the law clerks. That has served under her and youre beginning to see them in the shot now she has meant so much obviously. To a whole group of lawyers who have come up through the ages ever since she was a budding lawyer was very difficult for her as a woman obviously being the i think there are 9 women, she was one of 9 women, a class of 500. Harvard law i love her are quote to women and really the people. No matter who you are that she says you can have it all just not at the same time she thats how she. Spent her life as a as a woman as a mother. You know raising children and raising in this country about peoples rights of walks of life of all color of all ethnicity of all religion, yeah that champion of equality. Both in the workplace at home as you said for you know for both men and women and 4. You know a good number of the Lgbtq Community to later in her. Career on the bench. She was pivotal in a lot of landmark decisions that. Were hard fought for many years that ended up in the Supreme Court and she had a big hand in some of those major decisions that woven together the capture of our country today she was the woman on the Supreme Court. Back in the day they used to confuse her with Sandra Day Oconnor and they had tshirts, you know that said i am not sandy i am not. Rose. And she said when sometimes im asked when will there be enough women on the Supreme Court and she says my answer is when there are 9 now there are only 8 justices on the court and that seat that she left could be filled by a woman a woman much different ideologically than her. But the president President Trump is pushing through with his nominee to replace or on the bench just days after she died and that could very well come as soon as saturday between now and then of course its all about remembering the late justice and the impact shes had i chuckled a moment ago when you when you made that comment about you know. Their sense of humor and thats really what struck me not only was she incredibly bright incredibly smart yeah ferocious advocate and and an an argue were for her point of view but she was also incredibly. Selfeffacing and her sense of humor is something that really did touch a lot of people in rocketed her to you know pop culture status to the notorious rbg sure that we know and love today and a lot of kids only nowhere has that she was branded that because shes such a you know a trailblazer and a bold the center on the court. She would you spare expensive explaining exactly where she stood on something. And i another thing that she said she said never use for words when 3 will do and short and sweet. And but she did but she was also very patient and knowing that it was going to take years and years and years and generations to change things and so she said that earned her a key was to make arguments in a way that would gain supporters and here she is with her ideological opposite. And best friend on my court and isnt that something that people so polar opposite. In their in their jerseys aaronson in their views could behind the scenes be such great friends and thats just a you know a testament to how. How even handed she was as a person and in her judgments as well that you know. Theres are arguments over the law and then theres us personally and we can get along and still disagree this is something that you know the country needs more of these days but how you can disagree on things and yet still be cordial and still be friendly with each other really an incredible woman she will be missed and there she is with barack obama the president not the president that appointed her that was bill clinton now were going inside. Rotunda of the Supreme Court. And watch her casket and here during this portion of the ceremony were going to have members of the supreme the other justices of the Supreme Court in their spouses on one side of the casket and then opposite them. Seeded will be family and friends of the late justice and we are going continue to carry to some of the ceremony thats happening inside we know will be a couple speakers that are scheduled to address of those that are in attendance, one of them being a rabbi who will do the invocation. Rabbi lauren holt splat actually her husband articles but was a law clerk for Justice Ginsburg back not to the october term of 2014, so theres a long history there so she will give the opening remarks and were here but she has to say im sure will be a lot of personal recollections Ruth Bader Ginsburg as justice see it didnt even miss a day of the court up until 2018 for oral arguments. Even the day after her own husband passed away of cancer in 2010. And theyll both be hes already buried at Arlington National cemetery, she will be buried there as well. She made it through so many bouts of cancer. Pancreatic cancer cancer lung cancer. And kept going through chemotherapy through everything and never missing oral til twentyeighteen and then finally the pancreatic cancer took her life and we can see on the far side of the casket. There those are the other justices of the Supreme Court we saw chief justice. John roberts hes going to be delivering some comments as well i saw Justice Sotomayor has sought Justice Clarence there and theyre all there with their spouses and then on the in the foreground what you cant see because its too close to the camera that is where family and friends of justice. Ginsburg will be seated while we listen to the ceremony take place this morning what a thing to you know. She always marveled at the fact that she was a Supreme Court justice when her own mother worked in a sweatshop garment factory in one generation that you could go from that to this and now lying in state in the capitol on friday first woman in history ever to do that its its something to see funny brought other yeah, one of the against convert quotes that i love to this day and also showed her sense of humor was a quote that she said are a bit of advice of her mother gave 4 years ago, yeah that said in marriage and in work. Its always good to be just a little bit death. Im sorry how do you think we get a lot thats right exactly and she did as hes what to say it again she got along with everybody on on the high court. He even those that she was. Against when it came to their ideologies in and their thoughts about. Rights and discrimination something that she champion friend die or live life. I i just kind of a hit me this morning that you can sync ruth for so many things in your life. That employers cant discriminate against you based on your gender bias if you are pregnant if youre a woman, you get paid the same. As a man if youre able to go to school. She couldnt even do that there were just you know laws against women going to the same schools, Virginia MilitaryInstitute Change that. So many things at and men can thank her for being able to stay home and take care of the kids and get the same benefits that women do so she really was about a gender equality for all. And we will continue to bring you live coverage of the honoring of Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg. This morning stay 6. 42 right now we want to listen to the discuss the death of passing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. In a moment i will speak to what she meant to all of us. But first. I would like to turn to her beloved family. The justice was a mother. A grandmother. And as we all know had one of the most extraordinary Life Partners in her beloved marty. To each of you. To the justices colleagues. To her law clerks. And to her court family. The country mourns with you and send you our deepest love and comfort. To be born into a world that does not see you. That does not believe in your potential. That does not give you a pass for opportunity. Or a clear path for education. And despite this to be able to see beyond the world you are in to imagine that something can be different. That is the job of a profit. And it is the rare profit not only imagines a new world. But also makes that new world, a reality in her lifetime. This was the brilliance and vision of Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg. That is relentless in reminding instructing in commanding. That we never forget those who live in the shadows. Those whose freedom and opportunity are not guaranteed. 36 times were taught that we must never forget the stranger. 12 times we are told to care for the widow and the orphan. This is one of the most important commandments of the torah. It is the taurus call to action. And it is also the promise written into our constitution. As Justice Ginsburg said, and i quote. Think back to 1787. Who were we the people. They certainly werent women. They surely werent people held in human bondage. The genius of our constitution is that now over more than 200. Sometimes turbulent years. That we has expanded and expanded. This was Justice Ginsburgs lifes work. To insist that the constitution deliver on its promise. That we the people would include all the people. She carried out that work in every chapter of her life. As an advocate arguing 6 times before this court for equal treatment for women and men. As a judge on the dc circus circuit and as a justice on this court. And as a pass marking role model to women and girls of all ages. Who now know that no offices out of reach for their dreams. Whether that is to serve in the highest court of our land. Or closer to home for me as the rabbi of their community. Nothing could stop Justice Ginsburgs unflagging devotion to this project. Not even cancer. Justice ginsburg. Mid or lead or. From generation to generation. We promise to Carry Forward your legacy. May you rest under the wings of the stena knowing that you have tirelessly served us and this great country. The United States of america. Police arrest. And shall say the its a mental side on task come has now you are he is inside the Supreme Court bader ginsburg, the justice who died. And the age of 87, tea but soon show jean, did you know geico is now offering an extra 15 credit on car and motorcycle policies . Thats great thats 15 on top of what geico could already save you. Back 6. 49, lets get a quick update on your forecast we are looking at nice calm weather again today but the weekend is taking a turn and that means hotter temperatures drier conditions, strong winds lining up for heightened fire danger conditions come saturday through monday will make of an issue for inland the east bay areas with fire weather watches taking effect 30 to 40 mile per hour winds. All across the county 2 and then upper elevations of marine sonoma and napa counties to these areas will be especially prone to a fast growing wildfire come the weekend again now today just the opposite weve got a sea breeze thats going to keep us cool. 60s 70s and 80s as what you can expect today tomorrow and friday before the toasty conditions later on. Robin its packed up the bay bridge toll plaza for folks heading into San Francisco make sure you get out there early because theres a long line thats starting to spill back to the bottom of the maze of guess it has reached that point were averaging 14 minutes to fremont street. Also crowd on one oh one leaving san jose northbound from 6 ad up to 8. 80 but to the peninsula, youre fine and 2 crashes wrapping up 8 80 north at the right there in the same spot traffic is slow out of fremont from thornton rolling into union city area. Thank you very much robert want to take you back to live coverage here of the Memorial Service for late Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg with chief Justice John Roberts speaking now lets listen after call me. And describe some upcoming occasion or event that was important to them. And i knew what was coming. Could i come and speak. But no instead could i pass along an invitation to Justice Ginsburg and put in a good word. Many of you have seen the famous picture of Justice Scalia and Justice Ginsburg riding atop an elephant in india. It captured so much of ruth there. She was doing something totally unexpected. Just as she had in law school where she was not only one of the few women but a new mother to boot. And in the photograph she is right riding with a dear friend.
