Well can these last 6 months have been unlike anything we have ever experienced before and hopefully we will never experience again. Now it all started when local counties announced that stunning stay at Home Health Order back in midmarch. Remain at home. With exceptions only for essential outings the time for halfmeasures is over. And history will not forgive us for waiting an hour or more. So we just heard from San Francisco mayor london breed, san jose mayor sam liccardo that was from back in march as they and other bay area counties announced all the new rules that was the beginning of an unprecedented time. People started flooding Grocery Stores stocking up on food and famously toilet paper sanitizing supplies are also really hard to find which still even now is the case in some stores. The bay area notoriously congested roads they were nearly empty rush hour traffic felt like a thing of the past and bart also saw a 90 drop in ridership then came the masks, the cdc recommended in april that people wear cloth face coverings in public and that touched off a debate on the National Political stage but local county started mandating masks when you enter in the central business. The state of california then soon followed one of the more dramatic developments during the pandemic was the transition to Distance Learning with schools were foes forced to close once the shelterinplace took effect nobody knew how long it was going to be but then late in the spring it became pretty clear that kids were not going to be going back into the classroom for the rest of the school year. Then came summer camp so many of them were canceled or drastically changed then in mid to late august, the Current School year started almost entirely online and now california has revised reopening guidelines in Person Learning can resume for counties with lower risk rates but the schools have to decide if they want to do that or not so much has changed the last 6 months, its been a long and strange trip. Masks, outdoor air, 6 feet of distance, as few people as possible, and plenty of hand soap. Make sure lowering the risk of spreading covid19 is on your list for your next small gathering. Do your part to lower the risk. Homeowners and businesses along the saw the gulf coast were cleaning up today thats even as that same region braces for a delayed second round of flooding in the coming days from rivers and creeks well, and by sallys heavy rains National Guard soldiers perform rescues in florida and in alabama today for those who were trapped in the aftermath of Hurricane Sally we now return to our reporter on the gulf coast Jonah Gilmore on Dolphin Island which set us up for jonah this very low laying island right at the entrance to mobile bay right. Yes, so were on Dauphin Island which is south surrounded by water, you know this area is known to flood. But tonight cleanup is underway here on dauphin that was hurricane like conditions reportedly for about 10 plus hours here on the island we have red cross that station here helping families giving them those essentials providing them with food and water now on the island tonight debris remains scattered theres widespread Power Outages and water remains on some roadways while touring the one family let us inside their home to see the damage caused by the slowmoving yet powerful storm you can see part of the ceiling collapsed calls and water to leak inside damaging their property, not in the trailer park here you can definitely see the destruction. One trailer was ripped apart, you can see everything that was inside is now visible. Power crews have been in the area all day surveying the damage and working to restore power here. People have been removing debris, some not so lucky. This is an island there are boats. Some boats happens shifted and tossed around from those strong winds people have you know removing the debris and the mayor jeff queen isis hes thankful. Sally did not take any lives here and its time to start that healing and rebuilding process. Now back on the island here. The people who did not live in the area are not permitted on the island and those who are residents are required to have a little permit card with them. So jonah are residents in the area workers in the area what are they saying and their biggest needs right now and also are you seeing signs of fema or other emergency workers from the state that are showing up there on Dauphin Island. Yeah actually the biggest need right now is power you can just take a look there we are in complete copy of some light on this but this is a small island about 700 residents, theres no power here thats their biggest concerns are wondering when will that power would be restored as of responders no sign of fema just we drove around today, we did see the American Red Cross out here we side with power, but no signs of theme or other national respond this year. Its own and just curious youve been in mobile youve been in pensacola now youre on Dauphin Island back near mobile that whole area got hit pretty hard but im curious the power was out last night about half a Million People or so along the gulf coast. What area has been hardest hit or they all pretty much the same. They seem to be all pretty much the same you were talking rain along the gulf coast, a lot of these areas are either surrounded by water or near bodies of water we had that strong storm surge come through the area we have orange beach where someone actually a lot of these places you know had some flooding, so it seems to be pretty consistent across the board. No area looks to be harder hit than another everyone has some damage everyone receives some and even in orange beach that was one death reported so you know its pretty devastating all across the board. Im gianna an area where we are recovering from a horrific fire damage we want to wish all of you the are recovering from this terrific. Hurricane damage so stay safe. Thank you very much for that live report. Thanks jonah. Well for the latest tracking on the storm lets see what our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow has to say finally winding really sally now just remnants of the storm now no longer hurricane not even Tropical Storm or depression strength you see all that energy just kind of sliding on by so really more of a rainmaker but even embedded that you have some Severe Weather so that heavy rainfall causing flooding all along the air you can see all the tributaries of the rivers all the way down from alabama through a panhandle of florida up through parts georgia continuing into South Carolina fact, the South Carolina today, they had thunderstorms rotating on through noon kind of get the idea of a rotation that low there. And with that we had reports of at least 4 different tornadoes and causing some damage in the state as well, yes, strong gusty winds along the coastline looks like thia is all going to wind down though and move off the coast. In the next couple days. Thank you laura as well today is Constitution Day is a day meant to recognize the adoption of the u. S. Constitution and those who have become us citizens. President trump marking the Public Holiday by pushing to revise americas history books, he is launching a new commission promoting what he calls a quote patriotic education, this comes as some schools are using the New York Times 1619 project to re examine americas legacy of slavery. Next today, what happens to the animals and their owners are forced to flee wildfires without them. We hear from a bay area rescuer who goes behind the fire lines to bring them to safety and coming up in sports 29 or offensive. Tackle Trent Williams made his longawaited return to the nfl after nearly 2 years and he didnt miss a step. Jason dumas has in tonights flying tails as people flee their homes in the path of wildfires, many of them are especially worried about the animals they had to leave behind there are volunteer rescue groups going behind the fire lines to pull pets and livestock to safety but theyre often stopped by red tape. Its a heartbreaking decision for some fire victims to flee home without the chance to bring their pets or leave their livestock to safety i was getting calls at 2 oclock 3 oclock in the morning with owners just in tears because they are have been panicking about getting their animals out shelley number is one of the founders of nor cal livestock evacuation established by a dozen volunteers after devastating fires 3 years ago. The group now numbers close to 200 with a fleet of trucks and trailers at the ready. That experts and cows some their experts and horses some that are experts and she because shes a really difficult. She estimates the Group Rescues a 1000 to 2000 animals per wildfire event during the lightning complex fires in Sonoma County the group rescued a herd of 14 horses, 3 were burned one so badly it had to be put down but the others were brought to the u c davis veterinary hospital, including gidget who had burns to the face and body. Over in marksville on her back to me that she was definitely fleeing and the fan. The flames were coming hard. This is get it now recovering with other evacuated livestock incur owls at the jordan winery in healdsburg owner lost her home in the fire, but she says it was her horses and kept her up at night. Tell me how important these animals are to you. Oh my goodness. There they are everything he getting these animals to safety sometimes leads to confrontation. The volunteers insist fire safety is first and they dont want to get in the way of firefighters. Thats a real thing you dont want to get into somewhere get the animals loaded in your trailer and try to go out and then youre blocton but some local agencies arent so welcoming and the group says it was forced to abandon rescue efforts in butte county they have. Prevent us from helping. And we were up there working that fire for the first 4 days and then they effectively start locking Animal Rescue groups out. Shelina says there should be a process where volunteers can be trained and vetted to go in with their equipment and save animals freeing firefighters and others to do their jobs weve come to realize that this is a real thing its going to continue happening. People dont want to get out of their homes unless theyve got their animals out. More more people are trying to draw attention to the needs of animals during wildfires rescue organizations are now trying to get the attention of the california state legislature. So that they can come up with rules regulations and make it easier for them to get access to get those animals out so hours pa. So why dont the local authorities let people in to help get the animals out can well a lot of them feel bound by the law when theres an emergency like unauthorized people are supposed to be back there in many cases, some of these volunteer rescue organizations are not authorized by any agencies even though they are doing a service and nobody else at the time can get there. So theyre just trying to pull the animals out, but there needs to be some kind of a way that they can get some kind of permit certification, something to make them legit so that the local Authorities Say ok you can come in and so they need all the help they can get when situations like this happened so good to profile them today.
