Tonight, the air quality in the bay area night yet great but dramatically better than the past few days. You can see just how much clearer was in sausalito today we have been living in some of the most unhealthy air on earth over the past week but people are slowly getting back outside as we start to see and to smell a difference in the air. Our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow is here with details yeah guys finally getting those winds to start to clear things out still got some haze in the atmosphere and you can boy needs shot from the Berkeley Hills here lot going on to get some haze out there from some of the smoke some high clouds all some patchy fog. Begin to move in along the coastline. But certainly the air quality much better around the bay area today looking out toward the Golden Gate Bridge you can see it again we have some thick fog moving a little early on but that will be back again pushing into the bay and certainly overnight tonight kind of filling in around the bay area. But that though today finally getting a breath of fresh air outside heres where we sit right now youve got good quality area into San Francisco in oakland through hey were fremont all the way down into mount doom back toward the coastline. Still moderate amounts of blues but quite an improvement from yesterday in other parts of the bay area and i think as we look toward tomorrow, you start out hazy early on that some that smoke will settle in for the ground once again early on the morning, but i think by the afternoon. The winds pick up again and the great news is weve got even better quality in the forecast, the next few days outside right now were catching more of a westerly when you start to see these moving up into the teens you get 10 miles an hour in the San Francisco 13 at sfo 14 in oakland 12 of the ship 15 in fairfield so the winds have started to ramp up a little bit i think more so as we head in toward tomorrow afternoon weve got a cold front. Thats actually moving along the west coast bringing rain up in the pacific northwest, even some showers all the way into portland maybe a few showers that in the far Northern California but more importantly its going to start to ramp up that on shore breeze and that breeze will bring much fresh air much needed fresh air to the bay area and very good air quality as we round out the better part of this week. Thank you lawrence thousands of firefighters continue to fight dozens of fires burning up and down the west coast. Our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow is here now to better explain all of this lauren and their fascinating guys the storms of them burning all along the west coast and. Well the fires burning in all that smoke lifting up in the atmosphere you see making its way all across the United States generally the pattern flows from west to east of course you see fluctuations in that you get a ridge of High Pressure get low developing so you can get a motion in the atmosphere but certainly that smoke spreading everywhere as those fires continue to burn but today finally we caught a break from all of that smoke and getting some fresh air moving in right now looking toward sfo doesnt look at smoke is before you do see some. Clouds in the background that some thick fog. Thats begin to develop outside tonight that will be pushing inside the bay tomorrow. The air quality starting out a little rough youre going to see some of that smoke early on in the haze, especially in the Morning Hours poor quality expect in the east and the south bay moderate along the coast and the but i think by the afternoon again were going to see more significant sea breeze i think youre looking good air quality in the latter part of the day now its all courtesy of this frontal system finally after a couple of weeks here High Pressure for breaking down and begin to move further to the east so thats allowing this front to track a little bit closer know not to bring us any rain we might see a little drizzle out of it in fact see a little drizzle along the coastline tonight but other than that its going to the winds that are really the big story. Heres the forecast for those winds as we head through the night tonight calling downpour air quality tomorrow mornings the winds down to 2 Miles Per Hour and Half Moon Bay only 5 in San Francisco for in oakland by the afternoon. We begin to see the colors fill in winds begin to ramp up. Easily in the teens around many parts of the bay area probably gonna a surge over 20 Miles Per Hour in some spots may be closer to 30 by the afternoon and that will be enough to start to mix out and its going to happen again the following day so weve got some much better quality on the way, but that may change this weekend well talk more about that coming up, thank you lauren still ahead today more than 30 people behind bars dozens of weapons off east bay streets, thanks to a coordinated Law Enforcement operation what we know tonight about operation boulevard blues sluss while cal fire is closing in on total containment of all of were living in Uncertain Times, but as californians well get through this together. Well its been a tough time getting here but cal fire is getting closer to full containment every day on the lightning complex fires burning all around the bay area but there are still dangers with exist in those areas kron fours Maureen Kelly was our reporting in the fire zone near the czu lightning complex fires in the santa cruz mountains. And had a close call with a hazardous situation. This is a firsthand look of of the dangers that are still left here and the fire zone, im gaza street road here in unincorporated San Mateo County and taking a ride up with a local rancher to seeing the ruins of her, the property at the end of this road right near big basin on our way down. We were stopped by this. A tree that fell we just cross this road. They be about 45 minutes before half an hour for him to feel contest winner. You can see up top in the 4th there how there are still flames. Burning right now so still hot spot interrupted a fair or not this is has anything to do. With the. The reason this tree fell right now several trees, it looks like. But there it is burning so. We are going to. Soon as she is done parking her trump in a better spot. Me and her dog here were going fact. Hopefully find some help. After climbing over the fallen trees and walking about a halfmile the ranch and i came across the San Mateo County road crew. Clearing up this very problem. They were able to drive us back and cut the trees up so we could drive out of there. They expect to be clearing the aftermath of this fire for at least another month. If not more im sure were going to be very busy here during the rainy season during the winter coming back for us more trees, falling and more slides also with debris. And dirt and mud the rancher dire able to get out safely but our experience sends a very clear message. That the road closure signs out there in the fire zone are there for a very good reason. Maureen kelly kron 4 news. Im alexandra le mon in washington coming up, well take a look at the federal funding that will be available for states impacted by the wildfires. Plus gulf coast residents preparing for a dangerous storm are going to go live to mobile alabama. Just it hasnt made landfall quite yet. But Hurricane Sally is already packing a punch along the gulf coast, heavy rain and pounding surf driven by the storm are hitting the coast. Forecasters expect the slowmoving storm to possibly trigger dangerous historic flooding. We have a chance now to go to mobile alabama reporter Jonah Gilmore is waiting for that storm to make landfall. Jonah thank you for being with us whats it like out there right now tonight. Hey pam in care. And you if its the when the plane to see if its moving to the body as the hours go by here actually along bay at the water here went from calm to every child trees started been intensifying area. Parts of it out where we are but we are along mobile bay in front of the causeway bridge what would normally be a busy bridge has no one on it you can even see feel skyline you know we are in a low lying area that is known but with kind hurting people in this area to take safety precautions here on the morning first class but leis, but the one of the things that theyre really worried about here. Theyre telling people you know get out if you can see people putting sandbags in place 14 up their homes boarding up their getting out of the area getting to safety of course this is the slow moving storm as you guys mentioned moving at about 2 Miles Per Hour. But its inching closer and closer to the gulf coast expected to make landfall. The warning now supports will be here hurricane makes landfall along the alabamaflorida line before now reporting live in field. Joe right you guys dont uh im just curious, ive never been to that part of alabama but youre on the coast, its very flat the mobile river up from mobile. Since it is so flat and low lying tell us about the storm surge and how much flooding there could be especially in downtown mobile which is right on the water. Surprisingly downtime will feel has not fled anything like that one of the there is that theyre really worried about along the coast is Dauphin Island Dauphin Island has been known to with severe storms come through the area, those people were under evacuation. They got those people out of the area another thing to note here and will feel although the storm hasnt made landfall yet 40,000 people are without power tonight here in euro area, policy it will be in the path of the storm passes to restore that power to those residents here but right now no flooding at the moment but is expected here the water here, im in bay is rising as the hours go by. Jonah is there a general sense that mobile is ready for this storm as much as you can be. Looking around the city today on you can tell the already mayor Sandy Stimpson he made his made from that take the spot part of it seems like everyone in this area has been this man today when we got out until we saw several residents who said that they didnt want to be at their home when storm is so they decided to go to hotel. Those people are taking those safety precautions and youre taking the warnings very seriously theyre doing everything they can to get to safety they are taking it very seriously and will feel. Well we can certainly hear the wind and the rain in your microphone Jonah Gilmore please stay safe and try to stay dry thats for going to be difficult to do. And good luck thank you very much. Thank you. Yes. Well our chief meteorologist Lawrence Karnow is tracking that storm and is here now with the latest lawrence very long night ahead here and this is such a slowmoving storm the eye still sitting over the water so not a making official landfall. Yep and getting close. It is just been nudging along ever so slowly today you can see the circulation just off the coastline, heres mobile bay right inside here thats where our reporter was and you can see he just getting hit by some of those strong bands of moisture but the main Hurricane Force winds still remain just off the coastline. We did have some sites reporting in pensacola that one has gone down now we have another one gone down in gulf shores, but you can see that eye is about to make its way on shore as it does it is going to bring with it a tremendous storm surge maybe 4 maybe 6 feet the good news is thats less than the forecast yesterday. The hurricane has weakened somewhat so said of a category 2 storm were talking about a category one taking in for a closer look you can see how ferocious these bands energy rotating around the storm system are and boyd gulfshore just getting pounded right now. And thats going to be the problem with this storm system extremely slow moving as wandering along maybe 1, 3, Miles Per Hour right now latest moving at 2 Miles Per Hour. So it is moving very very slowly so those areas in southern parts of alabama, southern parts of mississippi and also the panhandle florida you see a tremendous amount of rain right around where comes on shore maybe 20 maybe 30 inches of rain and southern parts of the area there and then as it moves ever so slowly still maintaining pretty good strength and dumping whole lot of rain thats wednesday by 7 oclock making its way through central alabama, then finally making its way kick it east into georgia, but you certainly can see this is not a fast moving storm and thats going to be the main problem massive flooding and flash flooding all along this line, especially across the deep south guys. All right lauren thank you very much lawmakers say a lot of federal aid will be needed to deal with the fires burning in the west.
